Global News: Impact of the Circular Economy on Print and Publishing
By Mike Hilton
Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 17 July, which looks at a totally European issue as the EU attempts to gather input for what a European circular economy might look like. In other words, one which ultimately would ‘transform Europe into a more competitive resource-efficient economy’. As Laurel points out, the printing industry is already highly sustainable, so does the circular economy matter? No Online Features this week, but we do have the latest from drupa 2016 and FESPA.
Monday’s headlines saw Labelexpo 2015 in Brussels take much of the news with Domino, GSE, Tresu and MPS; followed on Wednesday by Epson, and on Friday by Gallus and Sappi Europe with their plans for the late September show. On Tuesday, Sappi took the lead as it announced plans to sell its CapeKraft recycled packaging mill to Golden Era, following last week’s decision to sell its Enstra mill near Springs in Gauteng to Corruseal.
In Wednesday’s headlines, Goss International took the lead at Groupe Maury Imprimeur in Manchecourt, Franceas the company installs its tenth Goss Sunday press, a Sunday 3000. This was accompanied by the news that Dr. Gerold Linzbach, Heidelberg’s CEO who is currently away with an undisclosed illness will now only return to work later than initially anticipated. In the interim, CFO Dirk Kaliebe has been appointed to take on his duties and to chair the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting planned for 24 July in Mannheim. Remaining with Heidelberg, but this time in the UK, the company has agreed a sales partnership with Masterwork UK for its enhanced portfolio of postpress and finishing products enabling Heidelberg to sell not only the Promatrix die-cutter and Diana X and Diana Smart folder gluers but also hybrid machines like the Duopress, inspection systems and more.
There is a whole mixed bag of news that I have not mentioned if you scroll down carefully, including KBA with the fourth Rapida 145 seven-colour large-format press at Walter G Anderson in the USA; and Manroland Web Systems at Baumann Druck in Kulmbach, part of the Mediengruppe Oberfranken, which has invested in InlineCutoff Control dynamic for both its Lithoman 40pp and 64pp press lines, which also includes a first to be installed on a Lithoman short-grain press.
The tailender goes to EFI on Friday, for its Graphitec 2015 Innovation Award for Software Solutions.
That’s it until next time, my best regards,
Mike Hilton
