In the run-up to drupa 2020, the technology group Ricoh has raised an interesting question in the context of its inkjet printing activities: “How do experts rate the status of the ‘offset to digital transition’ happening in the production print arena? – Below my assessment. Comments welcome!

To be honest: I know Ricoh’s inkjet printing developments right from the start, and I was very impressed with Ricoh’s progress with its flagship product VC70000 at the Hunkeler Innovation Days 2019. My conversation with Ricoh Europe’s Business Innovation and Solutions Director Erwin Busselot showed that image quality and productivity has made a quantum leap and meets the most up-to-date requirements.

At the same time, aspects of the optimal utilization of such a high-end system by commercial printers were revealed; and whether there are currently and in the near future a sufficient number of PSP’s that have the necessary huge amounts of data easily available and then process them accordingly. Specially for variable data printing, which is far from mainstream in the classical production environment, but absolutely necessary to mark an effective unique position, respectively, to guarantee the profitability and future viability of the printing company.

Which brings us to the core issue, when we think about the offset-to-digital transition: A) Which printing technique is the future? And according to B): How are sustainably successful print productions of the next decades designed to successfully meet the requirements of the digital age?

Here are my assessments and comments:

A) Which printing technology process does the future belong to?

“Old World”

  • Offset printing as well as flexographic printing as a process are clearly specified, well-proven and, at the latest since drupa 2016 in the course of Industry 4.0 solutions through digitization and automation of all process steps capable of highly productive and effective editions of any kind. Autonomous Printing has brought the classic printing world the leadership in industrial on-demand printing for runs of 250 and less, as shown above all in Online Printing, but also in classic commercial printing.
  • Accordingly, the increase in productivity, measurable by the Overall Equipment Effectiveness OEE, has increased exponentially in classical printing. Several thousands of printers have already succeeded in evolving from production printing to industrial production. The increase in print volume in offset and flexo printing, which can now be achieved, exceeds the page volume of digitally printed print jobs by far.
  • This is made possible by standardization, scalability and automation in offset printing; This is accompanied by new business models that are based on Big Data / Industry 4.0 / Real-time Management a. s. o. As well as allowing new, highly innovative financing options such as subscriptions, in which technology is no longer bought, the printing company pays for its use – with a constant increase in OEE.

Example of productivity growth through Autonomous Offset Printing at Elle Media Group, UK, via LinkedIn:

Some stats from November 2019 which will see another 7 million plus impressions month [by a single offset printing system]:

Year on year 22% sales growth

2 mins 58 average makeready

1.96m impressions in 167 hrs

150k in 10 hrs

10.8k average operating sheets per hr

“New world”

  • Digital printing is not a term that, like offset printing, characterizes a specific technology, but is an auxiliary term for a large number of different printing techniques, which are based on countless specific areas of applications. Accordingly, the development effort is enormously high, as well as the effort for commissioning, services, go-to-market, etc.
  • However, it is quite clear that inkjet printing has taken the lead in digital printing both qualitatively and effectively. In fact, the latest generation of inkjet printing systems created new applications (for example in packaging printing) and are replacing less offset printing systems than existing toner-based digital printing systems. Note: The digital revolution in print eats its children.
  • The fact is in most cases that the use of digital printing systems does not meet the requirement of industrial production; many installed systems are used virtually stand-alone, with their own proprietary digital front-ends and specific processes.
  • To make matters worse: The vision of success in digital printing is based on wrong assumptions and has a long tradition! Most notably, in spring 2004, market research agency CAP Ventures (later acquired by InfoTrends) publicly announced at the On Demand Congress in New York City that in the near future, one-third of the worldwide offset page volume could be substituted by digital printing in black and white and color. A fatal mistake! Until drupa 2016, it was significantly less than 5 percent of the world’s print volumes that were printed digitally. As a result, a lot of money was wasted and unnecessary effort generated.

Conclusion: Digitization has captured all print technologies in equal measure. “Classic” printing processes have long gone through the digital transition and today, as in the next 10 years, they are indispensable in order to manufacture the majority of printed products around the world in the required huge quantities in a customer-oriented manner.

However, digital printing can gain ground through industrially usable inkjet printing technologies. Provided inkjet printing becomes part of the Industry 4.0 evolution of industrial printers, who are dedicated to the world of Autonomous Printing and are able to operate all printing techniques that are useful to them in terms of collaboration and coherence.

Exciting: In the agency scene, as with the example of the Nice Branding Agency, people actively engage with print. But less from a technology perspective, but from the benefit perspective.

B): How are sustainably successful print productions of the next decades designed to successfully meet the demands of the digital age?

Technology on its own cannot guarantee the success, but the benefit for the communication of the clients of print productions. In order to increase the benefits, the strengths of print must be exhausted and presented in the best possible way.

At the same time, print benefits from convergence. In terms of digital printing applications, variable data is the measure of all things when it can be used wisely for contemporary multichannel communication scenarios. This also makes a clear differentiator to offset and flexo printing applications visible.

By the way: In Germany, the “CREATURA” initiative of the f:mp Fachverband Medienproduktion has created a standard work in book form that scientifically demonstrates what print in the digital age can do and how quality printed matter works (see my review on “The Power of Print”).

On the other hand, the expert network #Think!Paper has compiled a collection of information through short analyzes of some of the world’s leading experts, which can be viewed in the ValueBlog. (See: #ValueCheck: Print has a future! But the industry is facing a radical renewal!).

It turns out that the term “print” contains all the key terms that represent the value system and the benefits of print:

P = Personal

R = Relevant

I =  Iconic

N = Never-ending

T = Trustful

There’s nothing more you can say or know. Right?

Von Andreas Weber, Head of Value  | English Version

A) Welchem Drucktechnik-Verfahren gehört die Zukunft?

„Alte Welt“

(Siehe: #ValueCheck: Print has a future! But the industry is facing a radical renewal! https://valuetrendradar.com/2019/07/24/valuecheck-print-has-a-future-but-the-industry-is-facing-a-radical-renewal/ ).

Es zeigt sich, dass im Wortbild „Print“ alle Schlüsselbegriffe stecken, die das Wertesystem und den Nutzen von Print darstellen:

P = Personal

R = Relevant

I = Iconic

N = Never-Ending

T = Trustful

Mehr bracht man nicht zu sagen oder wissen. Richtig?

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 24 November 2017

Welcome to a roundup of just 16 articles at the end of a quiet week for news, which tapered out almost completely by Friday. You’ll also find Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog discussing the increasingly difficult problems encountered in successful paper recycling, as inks and coatings continue to change quite rapidly in their formulations and content. Rather like chasing moving goal posts.

Key news this week includes a more than £2-million pound spend by Taylor Bloxham of Leicester, UK on a new highly-spec’d Rapida 106 from Koenig & Bauer on Tuesday; while on Wednesday Wrap Cube became the first UK company to use 3M’s 780mC Reflective Wrapping Film, supplied by Spandex (you must see the photographs to appreciate why this gets a mention); and on Thursday,

Heidelberg celebrated the world premiere of the Primefire 106 with packaging printers from all over Europe at MPS-WestRock in Obersulm near Heilbronn, Germany at the beginning of November; and Scodix announces the start of its commercial roll-out of the E106 Digital Enhancement Press at an Open House, from 4 – 6 December at Gundlach Packaging Group’s facility in Oerlinghausen, Germany.

See as well the real-time report by Andreas Weber: “Value Check: Very well done — World Premiere of Heidelberg Primefire106 at MPS Multi Packaging Solutions in Germany”

To end the week on a high note, we had just one article from InPrint on Friday announcing that last week’s show in Munich ended with positive results. The next InPrint will take place in Milan at the end of 2018, before returning to Munich at the end of 2019.

That’s it until next time. There’s more to explore if you check out the headlines carefully, including the British Book Design and Production Awards winners on Monday; and some sound advice from Charl Vogel at Ricoh South Africa on Tuesday.

My best regards

Mike Hilton

Architect’s sketch of the new demo centre for digital and flexographic presses at KBA’s headquarters in Würzburg. — Nine months before the official ceremony to mark the 200th anniversary of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) in September 2017, the foundations were laid in January at the company’s Würzburg parent plant.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 17 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog on digital printing for packaging; the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Paul Lindström; and three new Online Features from KBA featuring sheetfed in both medium and large-format, as well as enhanced waterless web offset at Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei in Düsseldorf. (We’re catching up after communications glitch with KBA).

Lots of pre-show news among this weeks headlines with Canon Europe with a brand new machine debut, as well as EFI and Zünd at FESPA 2017 on Monday; Ricoh Europe with wide- and large-format inkjet, and Sun Chemical on Wednesday; and Mimaki Europe and Neschen on Friday. FESPA takes place in Hamburg from 8 – 12 May. Other major event coverage appears for Xeikon Café on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, set to take place from 28 – 31 March in Lier, Belgium; while on Thursday, Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers led the headlines as they announced their plans to present unique possibilities for new packaging concepts at Interpack 2017, taking place from 4 to 10 May in Düsseldorf.

On Tuesday, Sun Chemical announced that it will exhibit at Metpack from 2 – 6 May in Essen just 36km down the road from Dusseldorf, at the same time as Interpack which doesn’t make much sense to me. On Wednesday we have Graphispag in Barcelona, from 21 – 24 March; and lastly on Thursday from the OE-A as it presents the most innovative ideas and outlooks in a competition for members from the organic and printed electronics sectors at LOPEC 2017 in Munich, taking place on 28 and 29 March.

On Tuesday you will find interesting lead comment from Gareth Ward on Kodak, as it slowly edges towards the sale of its Prosper inkjet operation; while on Thursday, Koenig & Bauer announced the official construction start for its new digital and flexographic demo centre in Würzburg to commemorate its 200th Anniversary, as part of euro 6 million site upgrade.

There are a number of nice recent sales and installations this week, beginning with Manroland Sheetfed on Monday at AIIM. Tuesday saw Revista in Brazil with Eversify; KBA large-format sheetfed at DS Smith in Erlensee; KBA again on Thursday as it moves a high-spec Compacta 518 web offset press from Belgium to St. Petersburg in Russia; and on Friday, Heidelberg UK at Woking printer Optichrome, which has installed two high speed Versafire CP digital presses to replace Xerox machines. This was followed by KBA in the UK as it installs a Rapida 106 6-colour with coater at Offset Printing and Packaging in Kent; and lastly, H Heenemann in Berlin with a Muller Martini Finishing 4.0 solution, the Vareo perfect binder, as the ideal solution to handle digital print in shorter runs as it gears for the future with fast-changing market requirements.

The news doesn’t end there as there are still a number of excellent articles I haven’t mentioned. You’ll find them all if you scroll down carefully… including new software; the BPIF with Apprentices; Flint with global price increases for inks and varnishes; then Canon Europe as it offers a first step into professional-level application versatility with more finishing options.

Lastly, news on Friday as one of our long-standing friends, James Matthews-Paul, is appointed as IPEX 2017 Content Curator. James has already signed the London College of Fashion for a printed fashion catwalk as an early sign of radical changes that could follow, from an extrovert but very clever, passionate and dedicated industry analyst and journalist who always thinks outside the box. James is also of a younger generation with refreshing perspectives, which IPEX definitely needs after its last showing in London.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with South Africa’s Reinard Schuhknecht gearing up for his eleventh consecutive appearance in the popular competition – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 10 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 35 from the submissions of the past week, along with Laurel Brunner’s most recent Verdigris Blog and the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Paul Lindström on how printing companies can improve output quality, and No 23 in this current series.

Awards this week began with X-Rite on Monday with a prestigious iF Design Award for its TAC7 scanner; while on Tuesday, Unilux received a Sapphire Award for its industry-first LED-UV strobes, used in the inspection of inks and coatings.

Danaher’s Product Identification Platform, which includes Esko and X-Rite among many others, has acquired Israel’s AVT and its inline inspection systems, took Tuesday’s lead; while on  Wednesday, Kodak had the number one spot with its financial results for 2016, reporting net earnings of $16 million and an improvement of $91 million over 2015, with strong growth for key products, but still no finalisation or announcement of the buyer for its Prosper Inkjet Business, as it continues with the sale process for Prosper, while at the same time continues investing in the development of Ultrastream, its next-generation inkjet writing system. Many in the European trade press expected the announcement to coincide with this week’s financial results release.

Formset-ABC Printers in Cape Town, South Africa became the first company in Africa to invest in Muller Martini Vareo Perfect Binder for digital books, as it took the lead on Thursday. The contract was finalised at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne, Switzerland; while on Wednesday CTP Newspapers Cape Town announced its implementation of the Mellow Colour program from Mellow Colour UK and Digital View, Johannesburg.

Friday’s headlines were led by KBA, as it announces group participation for Interpack 2017 on a joint stand in Hall 12, featuring marking, print solutions, finishing and further processing for the most diverse forms of packaging at this year’s show in Düsseldorf in May. Other upcoming events include Contiweb and DG press ServiceS Open House in The Netherlands later this month; SPGPrints at Graphispag 2017 in Barcelona from 21 – 24 March; plus more on the 2017 Xeikon Café in Lier also later this month; and Printeriors from 8 to 12 May 2017 in Hamburg; and then Fujifilm UK which will demonstrate the Jet Press 720S over 21 days in May with live jobs – all in the news on Monday. EyeC announced its participation at Interpack on Wednesday; and we had more for Xeikon Café on Thursday, together with news from Tonejet and Rockwell Automation for their joint lineup at Interpack 2017.

More post-show success at Hunkeler Innovationdays came from Ricoh Europe on Tuesday; together with news from EuroShop which took place in Düsseldorf this week. On Wednesday recent Inca Onset X investments sparked a year of transformation for print businesses across Europe, according to Inca distributor Fujifilm UK, with an impressive list of major high-profile successes to back up its claim.

On Friday, the world’s biggest inkjet event, TheIJC (The Inkjet Conference) announced that it will return on 24 – 25 October 2017 to Swissôtel in Neuss, Düsseldorf. More from FESPA 2017 in Hamburg in May with its seminar programme; also from Canon announcing the FESPA launch of its new Océ Colorado wide-format device; and lastly Drytac at FESPA.

There‘s much more, including sales and installations successes, new kit, a new state-of-the-art Website from Hybrid; software upgrades and more. Please check them all out carefully.

The tailender once again goes to another update on Friday for the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Durban’s Emil Maehler set to inspire.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 03 February 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of 25 of the best received during the past seven days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Environmental Blog, and a new addition in Online Features Chapter 03, as Blömeke opens up new areas of business with the first Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75-5 LE UV to be installed in Germany.

“Our fourth quarter results demonstrate that we are realizing significant benefits from our Strategic Transformation program,” said Jeff Jacobson, Xerox chief executive officer. “We delivered strong margins that countered expected pressure on revenue.” Jacobson continued, “With the separation of Conduent now complete, we turn our full attention to delivering on our strategy, which includes pursuing the growing areas of the market. As the strategy begins to yield results, our revenue trajectory is expected to improve over time while we expand our margins and continue to generate strong cash flows.”

We had financial results from UPM on Tuesday and Xerox on Thursday; while UPM Biofuels took Monday’s lead slot, and Baldwin’s acquisition of Air Motion Systems led the headlines on Wednesday. EFI’s acquisition of Xerox FreeFlow DFE software also appears among Friday’s headlines. On Monday we reported the death of Xeikon’s founder Lucien De Schamphelaere on 20 January, at the age of 85; while on Friday, we were extremely sad to report the death of South Africa’s Lambert Retief, one of Paarl and Cape Town’s greatest entrepreneurs, who died on Thursday 26 January after losing a short battle with brain cancer. He was only 64. A memorial service to celebrate Retief’s life was held at Anura Vineyards in Klapmuts (near Paarl), on Friday 3 February.
On Wednesday, Sappi announced its new Website which highlights its global presence with increased functionality and robust educational resources. Please take look. It’s impressive. Also on Wednesday, Ricoh Europe announced the launch of the new Ricoh Pro C5200s series to enable print service providers to broaden their services.

You’ll find a good selection of news relating to upcoming events beginning with Xeikon at Hunkeler Innovationdays later this month; then for Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations in March in Belgium; Kornit at C!Print in Lyon last week; FESPA in Hamburg in May; and from Sign & Digital UK in March at the NEC; while IST (UK) will exhibit at PrintWeekLive! in Coventry in May.
Recent notable installations this week came from Heidelberg UK with Versafire CV digital; Renz UK; Heidelberg USA with a Speedmaster long-perfector equipped for coating and UV; from KBA North America with a large-format seven-colour Rapida with full UV; then Heidelberg in Germany with the first Speedmaster XL 75-5 LE UV with matching service package; followed by EFI Vutek wide-format in Ireland; Polar in the UK; and lastly Meech static control, in the UK and Europe.

The tailender goes to the PIA, which on Tuesday opened submissions for the 2017 InterTech Technology Awards with a 2 June deadline.

That’s about it until next time. I hope you have a good week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 27 January 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of yet another 20 of the best received during the past seven days and a new addition in Online Features from Ricoh South Africa’s Vaughan Patterson explaining how print is being integrated with digital in ways we never would have thought possible, such as with printed electronics in consumer publications.

Print’s transcendence of time unites customers with your digital story — Print is being integrated with digital in ways we never would have thought possible. One such way is through printed circuits. Brands can literally print an electronic circuit in a magazine for a novel form of advertising. There are examples of outdoorsy brands that have printed torches so people can rip a page from a magazine and light up the trail. It’s gimmicky but it’s novel and stands out like a lighthouse on a remote and storm-tossed shoreline to paraphrase bad novels.” Vaughan Patterson, Ricoh South Africa.

As for the news itself. It really is a diverse smorgasbord, ranging from upcoming events in the UK and Germany, to the FINAT calendar for 2017, with post-event news from the USA and Germany, as well several recent installations from a handful of manufacturers and suppliers of both hardware and software, including Domino with digital print in the UK; Hybrid Software in Sweden, Technotrans in the UK, IFS with Horizon also in the UK; Ricoh Europe with high-speed inkjet in Germany; Mark Andy narrow web in the USA; and HP Indigo in Spain.
Key news of the week came from EFI, leading the headlines on Thursday with its Q4 and Full Year 2016 preliminary results which saw some impressive record numbers; and then from EFI again on Friday as Rosemany Monaco presented her EFI Connect overview from the Las Vegas event of a week or so ago, neatly summing up its main focus and theme with CEO Guy Gecht, as well as Gecht’s ‘Fireside Chats’ with Jeff Jacobson, CEO of Xerox; and with Joel Quadracci, CEO of Quad Graphics.
On Tuesday, Canon announced that it has become the first company to serve as an official sponsor for the Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan; while on Thursday, POLAR announced that it plans a number of special gifts for customers who place orders throughout this year, to mark its 111th Anniversary.

The tailender this week goes to Duplo (Monday) as printers are invited to get ‘hands-on’ with latest products and innovations at an inspirational new showcase event set to take place at its headquarters in Surrey, UK, on 15 and 16 February.

That’s it until next time. If you scroll down carefully I’m sure you’ll find something of interest as there’s several I haven’t included above.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Highly attractive for startup companies such as PastBook in Amsterdam – print combined with social media provides access to new customer groups worldwide. Image collage: Andreas Weber, Mainz/Frankfurt am Main.

Executive summary of analysis by Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Also see the analysis commentary.

Print is becoming increasingly relevant – not only on the stock markets, but also and in particular with professional investors.

However, a closer look throws up a great many questions and even contradictions for (industry) outsiders. It is virtually impossible to obtain an overview of the position of “print as a business” from the current situation. This is because print is big – with an annual turnover of some US$898 billion (approx. €830 billion) in 2015.

In order to be able to evaluate print correctly, three different aspects need to be examined and assessed:

  1. (Global) economic importance of print
  2. (Unexpected) growth drivers in the print business
  3. Positioning and strategies of technology suppliers

1. (Global) economic importance of print

  • The print market is extremely important, rivaling automotive engineering, the financial sector, and advertising. This is actually nothing new and has been the case for generations!
  • One key trend in the print shop market is that print shops are becoming leaner, but added value needs to increase despite shrinking production volumes. Print shops must therefore continue investing so as to improve production efficiency and unlock new growth markets.
  • drupa 2016 made it clear on a global level that print media have by no means had their day and can be put to more effective use than ever. It is therefore wrong to paint a gloomy picture. The prospects are excellent!
  • The only way to add more value with print, though, is to stimulate the demand for modern-day print products on a sustained basis. Print doesn’t sell itself!
  • New kinds of striking concepts that are geared to market requirements and adopt an integrative approach to the professional manufacture, distribution, and use of print media hold the key to the future of print.
  • In order to be successful in the printing industry, it is vital not to rely solely on vertical positioning in individual applications, but to cater specifically to customer and market needs and ensure continuous innovation leadership.

2. (Unexpected) growth drivers in the print business

A) Strong growth impetus for print thanks to digital pioneers

B) Online print – the most dynamic growth segment at present

  • More than any other part of the printing industry, the online print sector is a pacesetter that is already seeing strong sales, with significantly higher double-digit growth and maximum profitability thanks to standardization and automation.
  • Relevant technical innovations are identified extremely quickly and implemented in a way that immediately helps add value.
  • The boom in mass customization in print will accelerate this development.

C) Trendsetting 4D printing opens up new dimensions

  • The 4D graphic printing process is one of the world’s most important emerging technologies (Gartner) and is only just getting started on the market. It’s still too early to provide valid market data/KPIs, but a look at the dynamic growth of 3D printing as a whole enables parallels to be drawn and evaluated.
  • The considerable importance and excellent prospects of 4D printing are in any case clear. Not only print shops and versatile online print businesses are involved, but also all kinds of other companies, including manufacturers of consumer goods, the commercial sector, and even online startups.

D) Packaging – core competence enjoying extremely strong growth worldwide

  • Almost half of global print sales are generated by packaging and label printing and the total will have reached around €472 billion by 2018 (approx. €390 billion in 2015).
  • The packaging and label printing market is currently expanding by some €25 billion each year and will soon account for over 50 percent of the global print volume. Online trade and multichannel applications including communication at the point of sale are key growth drivers.
  • Offset and flexographic printing are by far the most important processes and will still have to handle the bulk of production in 10 years’ time. Digital printing technologies (especially inkjet printing) are growing at an above-average rate – in particular thanks to manufacturers working together – but still remain at a low level in terms of market share.
  • Those print shops that offer integrated solutions geared to customers, a high level of automation/standardization, and digital process expertise are one step ahead of the rest.

3. Positioning and strategies of technology suppliers – from compartmentalized thinking to a customer-focused holistic approach

  • There are thousands of print and paper technology suppliers. Printing industry customers are confronted with a multitude of identical or similar offers.
  • Despite everything – and probably also due to the ever-present digital print manufacturers who like nothing better than to predict the demise of print if the industry fails to invest in digital printing – manufacturers using traditional offset, gravure, and flexographic technologies appeared to be falling behind.
  • However, despite having to face serious crises that threatened their very existence, the long-established groups Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heideldruck) and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) have maintained their strong position and been completely revitalized.
  • The world of offset printing, which was left for dead, has been successfully resuscitated and proactively integrated into the world of digital printing. Digital printing technology, on the other hand, remains compartmentalized with its standalone solutions and relies on displacing existing solutions through substitution.
  • Investors and the stock exchange acknowledged the renaissance of German companies KBA and Heideldruck at drupa 2016. The sales and earnings of both have improved as a result – with confident forecasts of upward share price movement.
  • For companies focusing uniquely on digital printing technology, on the other hand, big ambitions and significant research outlay have not had a positive impact on their share price to date.
  • The two German printing press manufacturers KBA and Heideldruck – the industry frontrunners – are successfully defending their leading positions and once again enjoying profitable growth. As things stand at present, Heideldruck has the best chance of building on its dominant market position in the digital era thanks to its holistic and expedient digitization strategy focusing on print.
  • Consequently, Heideldruck has become the pacesetter in the digital transformation of the global printing industry. In addition to different printing technologies, the entire print shop management process – including digital administrative/process control and cloud-based services – is being incorporated for optimum networking. The benchmark here is to ensure the best possible customer focus.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 16 September 2016

Welcome to another roundup of 27 news articles posted during the past week, plus one new addition to Online Features from KBA in Nuremberg, with a new long perfector with coating and nine inking units at L/M/B Louko, which scooped this year’s ‘Top Innovator of 2016’ award in Germany.

Then we have Laurel Brunner back with her latest Verdigris environmental Blog, which this week looks at Plastic Dreams. Following which is Nessan Cleary’s very latest Wild Format Technology Guide which explains the basics of the printhead – the heart of an inkjet printer and directly responsible for placing each individual drop of ink on the substrate. This is the ninth article in this new series from by Laurel Brunner, Nessan Cleary, Sonja Angere and Paul Lindström at Digital Dots. All of which can be downloaded as PDFs, with almost 40 still to follow over the coming ten months or so.
On Monday we also announced the first in a new series from Andreas Weber at ValuePublishing entitled ValueTrendAnalysis: Transformation – ‘Beam me up Scotty’. The article is an overture to a series of trend letters and trend studies produced by ValuePublishing together with Muchcommunication.
Our news this week again comprises a completely mixed bag. We have tried to carry all of the current and imminent show-related articles for you which include announcements regarding Photokina in Cologne; from Labelexpo Americas and SGIA Expo which took place last week you will find announcements from EFI, Cerm, Ultimate, Durst, HP, Agfa, Presstek and Xeikon; then we have the agenda for the Inkjet Conference 2016 taking place in Neuss from 4 – 6 October; followed by ProImage, Scodix, KBA, Goss and Presstek at Graph Expo 2016, which opens this coming weekend.
Leading the news on Tuesday: Esko announced more than 120 free online training sessions to be available in a choice of five languages to help Esko’s global customers get the most out of their new software. You’ll find all the details in the article below with links to be able to register.
News leaders this week included Wallpaper Magazine with HP Indigo on Monday teaming up to create 220,000 unique posters for the publication’s 20th anniversary this month. On Wednesday we had HP Inc announce its acquisition of Samsung’s Printer Business, with the aim of disrupting the copier segment by reinventing and replacing service-intensive copiers with superior multifunction printing technology.
Recent sales and installations successes began on Monday with Manroland Sheetfed at Dongguan Xincai Packaging in China; Tuesday saw Heidelberg at Newnorth Print in the UK with the very latest Stahlfolder KH 82 combination model with Palamides delivery; then Esko in Brazil with the milestone 3000th CDI – a CDI Spark 5080 for trade house Clicheria Blumenau – its fifth Esko CDI.
Among the various articles you will find quite a bit of new kit, including EFI with an enhanced Jetrion for labels; Mimaki with new wide-format inkjet direct sublimation for textiles, combining printing and heating for colour fixation into a single footprint; also HP with a new Latex Printer series at SGIA on Friday.

My tailender for the week from Tuesday’s headlines is the Blog Post relating to the K-Show (the world’s number one event for plastics and rubber) from 19 – 26 October in Düsseldorf: by Chris Winczewski at X-Rite Pantone. Not exactly printing as such, but extremely interesting and related – since X-Rite and Pantone and colour control are so closely related to our own industry, and the K-Show is becoming more relevant as production boundaries become blurred in our fast changing world.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
