Global News: Focus on 2015 InterTech Technology Awards
by Mike Hilton
Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 24 July, which this week takes a peek at addressing climate change… I think, or has she perhaps developed a Gerald Scarfe type of obsession for HRH Prince Charles’ ears perhaps? As the European holiday season and exodus really gets underway there are no Online Features or FESPA or Drupa News items this week… except from Kemtek in South Africa which drew attention to FESPA Africa on both Wednesday and Friday. The event took place in Johannesburg from Wednesday until Friday at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. There was also one show-related announcement from Nipson together with its distributor Inkjet Technology Solutions.
The week’s news has been rather thin on the ground, but we did receive EFI’s second quarter results to lead the news on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday we have Heidelberg with its preliminary figures for its first quarter of the current financial year. This was accompanied by Printing Industries of America, as it announces the ten winners of the 2015 InterTech Technology Awards to be presented during Graph Expo in Chicago in September.
The week saw the latest software releases from Esko and Agfa Graphics on Monday, while on Tuesday a new HP-tested UV varnish range was introduced by Flint. On Wednesday, Epson announced the launch of two new dye-sublimation printers for printing on a range of substrates to complete its range of dye-sub printers. The new SC-F7200 and SC-F6200 printers are capable of producing high-quality printed textiles, such as clothing, sportswear and home textiles, and also offer the flexibility needed to sublimate onto a range of hard substrates. On Friday Flint introduced a new metal-backed letterpress plate to its range.
Several really nice installations and sales successes this week came from Ricoh at X-Ide in Norway which has added four new C9110 digital presses; Gallus at RAKO Group which has installed two new Gallus ECS 340 presses; Xerox with Bytes at TCM in Pretoria with a new Versant 2100; Screen at ESAG in Portugal with a new large-format Truepress W3200UV HS flatbed press; Epson at Kili Arts also with large-format, a SureColor SC-F6000 dye-sub printer; Heidelberg UK at Thomson Print & Packaging with new Suprasetter CTP; while Heidelberg in Germany announced the new Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour perfector with energy-saving LE UV coating at Görres-Druckerei. A major Printservices project has been completed by Manroland Web at Fairfax Media Printing and Logistics to make newspaper production future proof in New Zealand; and Delta Print & Packaging in Belfast is set to enhance its production capabilities as it takes delivery of Speedmaster XL 145-6+L from Heidelbe rg UK. Last but not least, trade finisher A&M Ellis in the UK has added Horizon perfect binding from Intelligent Finishing Systems.
A tailender on an environmental note this week goes to UPM (Friday). In the recently released WWF UK Timber Scorecard, UPM was one of a small number of companies which received the highest score.
That’s it until next time, my best regards,
Mike Hilton
