Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 24 June 2016

Welcome to this week’s second post-drupa news roundup, with another 50 articles in the headline news for this week, plus a further 30 in our own drupa Newsroom and around another 500 or so articles, comprising key interviews, feature articles, surveys, news, new kit and sales successes in the series of eleven complete drupa daily news magazines, published on each day of the fair in Düsseldorf. But please note, there is a correction, as last week’s series was incomplete, which has now been rectified…  Thanks to Refik Telhan, one of our followers and subscriber in Istanbul, Turkey, for helpfully drawing attention to the error and omissions.

Correction! We have a really exciting new addition for you in our own drupa Newsroom. If you weren’t at the show, or even if you were at this year’s event in Düsseldorf, you can now get your hands on all eleven issues of the drupa daily show magazine, with complete PDFs of each issue to download.

These are jam-packed with news and highlights and the daily ‘Red Sofa’ interview with key exhibitors’ starting with drupa President and Koenig & Bauer chief executive Claus Bolza-Schünemann; followed by Kodak chief executive Jeff Clarke; Canon EMEA president and chief executive Rokus van Iperen; Benny Landa; Enrique Lores, HP president of Imaging and Printing; Konica Minolta’s Olaf Lorenz general manager Business Solutions Europe; Jean-Pascal Bobst; Eijiro Hori, president of post-press kit manufacturer Horizon; Massivit chief executive Avner Israeli; Marabu chief executive York Boeder; and lastly, Wolfgang Kroplunik, head of business development & Western Europe, Uncoated Fine Paper at Mondi; talking to two of Europe’s top trade press editors: Thomas Fasold of Druck&Medien in Germany; and Daryl Danielli, of PrintWeek UK.

The drupa daily also includes some of the hottest show technology, sales and products that were the buzz words at drupa 2016, and breaking news of the day, sourced, curated and produced by a team of the industry’s leading journalists throughout the show. Comments and rumours, photos and all that made it ten fantastic days at drupa and in drupacity Düsseldorf.

Key news headlines this week: Monday’s leads were from KBA featuring newspaper web press orders in Germany, and the Indian Ocean Island of La Réunion. Tuesday saw Screen’s new high-speed roll-fed inkjet press, the Truepress Jet520NX drupa preview debut, lead the day’s selection. On Wednesday, Manroland Web Systems’ new compact web premiere: the Geoman e:line, took the lead; while on Thursday, Canon celebrated its most successful drupa ever.

Friday’s leader crowned the news of the week most appropriately, as the appointment of Jeff Jacobson to head Xerox Corporation was announced by the Xerox board, following completion of the company’s planned separation into two publicly traded companies. My sincere congratulations to Jeff, who has remained a very good friend since we first met at drupa 2000.

This week’s Verdigris Blog from Laurel Brunner, addressing environmental policies, really is an excellent article that should also not be missed.

As a tailender this week, on Wednesday, Kodak announced that it celebrated 21 years of Thermal CTP at drupa. A wonderful celebration indeed, since Dan Gelbart and Boudewijn Neijens of Creo (now part of Kodak) introduced their first thermal platesetter, heralding the birth of computer-to-plate at drupa 1995.

I was there, and followed this new and emerging technology very closely for the next three years, until Ipex in 1998, when commercially viable, reliable and affordable CTP was born with the Trendsetter, using Kodak Polychome Graphics’ thermal plates. It was immediately after this, that Graphic Repro & Print became one of the first five magazines in the world to adopt CTP. I wanted to prove to the industry that it was real and that it really did work.

Our first issue produced using CTP featured Heidelberg CEO Hartmut Mehdorn on its front cover, and the second issue, where we described the move to computer-to-plate from computer-to-film had Scitex’ corporate VP Miki Nagler on its cover. The issues are still in our Website archives for 1998! Wonderful pioneering stuff in those days! The rest, as they say, is history.

That’s it again for another week or so. Please scroll down carefully, as there is so much good stuff to read about.

With my best regards,
Mike Hilton

Welcome to this first post-drupa news roundup, with over 50 news items for you in the headlines since last Monday, plus late additions to the pre-drupa News in our own dedicated Newsroom from Asahi, Fujifilm and Agfa Graphics, and another important initial 20 ‘at-show and post-show’ announcements… from Heidelberg, Koenig & Bauer, Kodak, EFI, Muller Martini, Leonhard Kurz, Manroland Web Systems, and Fujifilm with Heidelberg; and especially from drupa 2016 show organiser Messe Düsseldorf with its end-of-show closing announcement, following what has been described as ‘the best drupa since 2000’. This drupa article also contains 21 endorsements and personal comments from key exhibitors, such as Guy Gecht, EFI; Benny Landa; Gerold Linzbach, Heidelberg; Jean-Pascal Bobst; Francois Martin, HP; John Blyth, Ricoh Europe; and 15 others. All of the above articles and announcements do not include the mass of at-show sales successes which appeared in our daily news columns throughout the week – with masses still to come, and with more still arriving on a daily basis.

What is the secret of #drupa2016 in 20 sec. — Summary by Andreas Weber, Head of Value.

Then we have a really exciting new addition for you in our drupa Newsroom. If you weren’t at the show, or even if you were at this year’s event in Düsseldorf, you can now get your hands on all nine daily issues of the drupa daily show magazine, with complete PDFs of each issue to download. These are jam-packed with news and highlights and a daily ‘Red Sofa’ interview with key exhibitors’ starting with drupa President and Koenig & Bauer chief executive Claus Bolza-Schünemann; followed by Canon EMEA president and chief executive Rokus van Iperen; Benny Landa; Enrique Lores, HP president of Imaging and Printing; Konica Minolta’s Olaf Lorenz general manager Business Solutions Europe; Jean-Pascal Bobst; Eijiro Hori, president of post-press kit manufacturer Horizon; Kodak chief executive Jeff Clarke, and lastly, Marabu chief exec utive York Boeder, talking to two of Europe’s top trade press editors: Thomas Fasold of Druck&Medien, Germany; and Daryl Danielli, of PrintWeek UK.

The drupa daily also includes some of the hottest show technology, sales and products that were the buzz words at drupa 2016, sourced, curated and produced by a team of the industry’s leading journalists throughout the show. Comments and rumours, photos and all that made it ten fantastic days at drupa and in drupacity Düsseldorf.
The world’s biggest and most important trade fair for print and cross-media solutions also announced that it is to stick to its proven four-year cycle and drupa will be held again in Düsseldorf from Tuesday, 23 June, to Friday, 3 July 2020.
Please scroll down very carefully this week. You will also find three Verdigris Blogs from Laurel Brunner, all published since our last update. There is a message from Laurel in her most recent Blog for the drupa organisers, who missed a great opportunity in not taking a sustainability lead at this year’s event, and hopes the environment will be in sharper focus in 2020.
I hope you enjoy this week’s selection.
Until next time, when I shall strive to bring you lots more.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

SESSION III: ROUND TABLE, OPEN DISCUSSION

– What is the Future of Paper in the Knowledge-Rich Workplace? –

Prof. Richard Harper, SOCIAL SHAPING RESEARCH LTD.

Expert Panel including:

Heidi Stockum, Procurement & Business Development, MGA METRO GROUP

Martin Glass, Director, EMGE & CO.

Prof. Richard Harper, Professor, SOCIAL SHAPING RESEARCH LTD.

Andreas Weber, CEO, VALUE COMMUNICATION AG

It is always good to get prepared! Our Session Chairman Bob Letham was asking for an anecdote which he could share during his introduction. Here is mine:

“Something old became something new!”

I live and work since almost 30 years in Mainz/Germany, the hometown of Johannes Gutenberg. Last year, I had a special guest from China: Prof. Yu Hiu, Deputy Director The National Palace Museum, Beijing/China. He is responsible for the huge collection of paintings and calligraphy in China’s most important museum. I introduced him to the world of print showcasing parts of my own print collection and delivering some insights based on my friend Prof. Hermann Zapf, one of the leading calligraphers for ever.

Prof. Yu Hiu was amazed. He was not aware of our current knowledge and passion for „The Art of Print“, driven by genious talents like Gutenberg, Senefelder, Zapf and other german creative inventors.

He stated: „We invented in China thousands of years ago paper and printing. But we lost it. You have to come to China to educate us. Why not organizing an art exhibition and lectures to show samples of extraordinary printed art pieces?“. So we will do next year. And we will combine „old“ pieces (Lithography, Gravure, Wood Cut a.s.o.) and „new“ pieces created by leading European and Chinese artists specially for modern Digital inkjet Printing technologies. The exhibition is named: „Surprise. The Art of Print“.

In fact: Print is and will be alive for ever if we combine our valuable tradition in Graphic Arts with the demand of the digital age. Because the real value of digital printing is so close to what Gutenberg and his followers were able to establish already in the past: unique printed pieces on a premium level. (BTW: The industrial approach of offset printing production destroyed those values because everything was related to mass factoring on a lower quality level!).

I hope you like my nice anecdote. You could also read some blog posts I already published in my Blog and also via other publisher’s websites!

Surprise The Art of Print-Warhol.001

Fundstück. Passend zu meinem Ausstellungsprojekt ›Surprise. The Art of Print!‹ —Andreas Weber

John Dawsen [Hrsg.]. In: Handbuch der künstlerischen Drucktechniken, Verlag Herder, Freiburg, 1983. — oOriginalausgabe: London, Quill Publishing Ltd., 1981 (The complete guide to prints and printmaking techniques and materials.). — John Dawsen war Senior Lecturer Graphic Design am London College of Print.

Print im Wandel. — Hierin liegen maximale Herausforderungen,

  5. Das Projekt „The Art of Print“ beschreitet Neuland und zeigt, wie durch neue digitale Druckverfahren (allen voran Ink-Jet-Printing) die Kunstszene bereichert und den Künstlern neue Möglichkeiten eröffnet werden.

DSC01976 2

Kleiner Exkurs: Kulturwandel von Gutenberg bis heute!

These

The Art of Print Bilder 2

Prof. Yu Hiu, Deputy Director The National Palace Museum, Beijing.  — Die Ausstellung soll in Mainz konzipiert und dann in Beijing und Shanghai gezeigt werden, mit dem Arbeitstitel „The Art of Print“.

The Art of Print Bilder 1

Beyond Graphic Arts: We showcase how Print becomes Art. And vice versa. Artists are real Innovators.

By Andreas Weber, Mainz/Frankfurt am Main, Germany

I am Andreas. I work as a communications analyst and adviser. The idea of this project is more or less the result of decades of my work and all those great learnings I made. Most important for me: I want to showcase in an extraordinary art exhibition how Print becomes Art and vice versa. Beyond Graphic Arts. All those amazing artists and their art pieces I selected are highly innovative.

To make this happen, I need your support and help.

And I promise: Our supporters will be our heroes. It is all about the beauty and innovation power of The Art of Print.

Background

Based in Mainz/Germany, the City of Johannes Gutenberg as the Man of the Millennium we have learned, that the real innovation in our life and culture is driven by those artists who are able to adopt new technologies to create and visualize the best content. We will have a mix out of the work of amazing German artists and a group of Chinese artists.

The funding is necessary to realize the exhibition concept, to present the exhibition pieces in a smart way, to frame them, to ship them to our unique exhibition locations in China, the home land of paper and print. And to publish about it via Social Media, videos and ebook applications.

Exclusively we will benefit from the famous art collection and world class knowledge of Prof. Wilhelm Weber, the author of art books like “Saxa Loquuntur” and “Aloys Senefelder”.

Selection of the artists we will present:

HAP Grieshaber, Christian Kruck, Hermann Rapp, Dietmar Gross, Guido Ludes, Rudolf Scharpf, Eberhard Schlotter. And a group of famous Chinese artist selected by Dr. Ying Lin-Sill, Mainz/Beijing.

Special thanks to Dr. Ying Lin-Sill for being our project partner and co-organizer.

NOTE: There is zero risk. The partnerships in China are already fixed and highly motivated. The exhibition art work is already available. The basic concept was shared with some genius experts in science, museums, art galleries, media. And for sure leading artists got involved as well. All of them loved it.

From Gutenberg City Mainz to China — the Land of invention of paper and printing Art

The art of printing on an equal footing with the fine arts, especially painting!

First stations in Shanghai and Beijing

Since summer of 2014 Andreas Weber in a team with Dr. Ying Lin-Sill several meetings and events were held in the Gutenberg City of Mainz with high-ranking guests from China. The guests were delighted with Mainz as a center of the culture of communication. The spirit of Gutenberg as a “Man of the Millennium” is still felt today and impressed. Similar to a few years ago already visionaries of Silicon Valley were inspired, most notably Professor Jeff Jarvis (author of “Gutenberg – The Geek”), who visited Mainz in person.

Our honorable Guests from China suggested to conceive an exhibition on the culture of print communications. So among others, Prof. Yu Hiu, Deputy Director The National Palace Museum, Beijing. The exhibition is now coming to life and will be designed in Mainz and then shown in Beijing and Shanghai, with the project title “SURPRISE: The Art of Print”.

This especially against the background that, while some 2,500 years ago the paper got invented in China. And around 1,000 years ago, printing with stone slabs and wooden letters appeared the first time in China as well. However, since that print innovations take place outside China and are no longer used as such by the art scene in China.

The focus of the project are based on the results of the scientific work of Professor Wilhelm Weber (former Director of the Mainz State Museum/Landesmuseum Mainz), his publications (especially “Saxa Loquuntur” and “Aloys Senefelder”), including an exclusive collection of original graphics focusing lithographs (Stone printing). In addition the ValuePrint Lab by Andreas Weber delivers strong support to develop and showcase the innovation power of modern print and communications technologies. Specially for Art + Artist prototypically developed to date, outstanding new applications will be created and implemented with innovative partners that can then be exhibited in China. HP’s Graphic Solutions Business Group, the world wide leader of digital printing solutions on a premium level, will be our exclusive technology partner.

So be curious and stay tuned!

Roadmap:

The exhibition will start in China. Currently we are in touch with other renowned art institutions: Central Academy Museum, National Art Gallery, Qinghua University Academy and LAANG Art Center.

More information coming soon or in advance on request!
