Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 21 April 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 28 articles over the past four days, plus the latest Wild-Format Technology Guide from Sophie Matthews-Paul addressing direct-to-garment printing; Laurel Brunner’s 250th Verdigris environmental Blog; and a new addition in Online Features featuring the new KBA Rapida 75 PRO and new workflow package at Hansa-Druckerei in Grevenbroich, not far from Düsseldorf and Neuss in Germany.

For more than a generation, “digitalization” has had a fulminant impact (regardless of how one may interpret the term!); our living environment and real life go hand in hand with fulminant structural changes at ever shorter intervals accompanied by an enormous increase in pressure, thanks to globalization. So time for a change, specially in the print media industry! — Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Another short week but with an interesting mixed bag for you once again. Tuesday began with the latest issue of KBA Report No 50, timed to highlight the company’s 200th Anniversary a little later this year with a special anniversary supplement. Wednesday began with a focus on Ricoh from Gareth Ward, as its new CEO plans a huge shakeup of the company in order to escape decline. Thursday’s headlines were led by news of Sappi‘s first sustainable joint packaging development with Felix Schoeller: The initial results are convincing, and will feature at Interpack from 4 – 10 May in Düsseldorf. Then Heidelberg UK, which led the news to round off this short week on Friday, as Elanders Newcastle takes delivery of a Speedmaster XL 106-8-P long perfector and top-performance Stahlfolder TH 82-P.

Pre-show news this week features InPrint 2017 in Orlando, USA; Metpack 2017 in Essen, Germany; Interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf; and IST METZ’ UV Days 2017 in Nürtingen, Germany. You’ll spot them all if you scroll down carefully, featuring a number of exhibitors at the various events.

A selection of recent installations appears on Tuesday with Prinect Workflow and MIS from Heidelberg USA at Geographics in Atlanta; the very latest Stahlfolder KH 82 from Heidelberg UK at Penstripe in Leeds; and Manroland Sheetfed in Hungary with a Roland 506 LV hybrid for the country’s banknote printer; then from Xitron, EFI‘s Packaging Suite workflow with Radius in Canada; and from Tecnau at Rotomail in Milan on Wednesday. On Thursday, we have Heidelberg’s Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour with coater and X-Package cutting job times in half at Brodnax Printing in Dallas; and Xaar with new printheads at Parefeuille Provence in France for high-quality tile production; and to wrap up the week Elanders Newcastle with its Speedmaster XL 106-8-P long perfector and Stahlfolder on Friday.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open due to take place in Cape Town from 15 – 17 May, with 16-year old Enrique van Wyk from Bloemfontein joining players from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other South Africans for this popular event. You’ll find this among Thursday’s headlines as usual.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find a few more if you scroll down carefully, including Ghent Workgroup with Hybrid Software; and locr with a new white paper from Infotrends, among others.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Before I go further, I would like to draw your attention to a Webinar which is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday 19 April) You will find this in Wednesday’s headlines from Andreas Weber entitled: ‘Beam me up, Scotty’ – Transformation in the Digital Age: The Webinar, also for Konica Minolta’s PROKOM User Community, will be hosted by my good friend Andreas Weber, of Value Communication.

As a follow-on from last Friday’s main lead article regarding Kodak having cancelled the sale of its Prosper Inkjet business, Monday’s lead article announces Kodak’s new head of its Enterprise Inkjet Systems division, replacing Philip Cullimore who is taking a break. Tuesday’s lead was taken by a combination of Gareth Ward’s article and Heidelberg’s own article announcing the new CX 75 press. On Thursday, UPM announced that production of its Brite family has now been expanded into Austria at the Steyrermühl Mill; while on Thursday, Heidelberg took the lead again with the introduction to the Colordruck Baiersbronn and the Primefire 106 announcement mentioned above.

The rest of the news is good and comprises a really mixed bag this week as everyone rushed to clear whatever they may have had before the Easter long weekend. You’ll find new inkjet wide-format kit from Agfa, software upgrades again and a new Graphics Suite from Corel; new and improved EFI DFEs for Ricoh; Codimag and IST new energy-saving UV system; and new direct engravable plates from Flint. Then we have post-event news from Esko’s Innovation Day in Ghent at the end of March; lots of pre-show news for Interpack and FESPA 2017 next month among others, and more.

Recent sales and installations successes include Heidelberg at Czech commercial printer Triangl; Graphics Works in the UK with Europe’s first Fujifilm Acuity LED 3200R roll-to-roll printer; Australia’s IVE Group expanding with a Manroland Web Systems Lithoman 80-page double-web press; then Muller Martini at Funke in Erfurt, Germany with two more ProLiner inserters, bringing its mailroom total to four alongside a formidable lineup of other state-of-the-art mailroom equipment from the Swiss manufacturer; and lastly, Cape Branding Services has grown its new digital printing division with a Xerox Color C70 printer from Cape Office Machines and Bytes.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open due to take place in Cape Town in May, with Simonstown’s Riaan Spreeth joining players from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and other South Africans for this popular event. You’ll find this among Thursday’s headlines as usual.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you take your time when you scroll down, including the latest acquisition in the ink world from Hubergroup and expansion for CHILI Publish.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Two highlights among many others: Xaar announcing the official opening of its new 3D Centre. And Xeikon Café was dedicated to innovations in packaging.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 31 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 35 articles from the past week and Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, with a headline which conjures up memories of a popular breakfast cereal package featuring three popular gnomic elf mascots – rather surprisingly dating back as far as 1933, with the slogan having been coined even four years earlier in a print advert in 1929, some two years after the popular breakfast cereal was first invented. Snap, Crackle and Pop! Or as they might say in Germany, Knisper! Knasper! Knusper!

There are two new additions to Online Features this week: firstly from KBA detailing its DriveTronic Plate Ident technology enabling perfect automatic plate changes to take place on all formats of KBA sheetfed presses; and then from Heidelberg as innovation takes hold in industrial commercial postpress with the huge success of drupa-generation Stahlfolders in both the UK and Germany.

This last week of March and the end of the first quarter of 2017 has been a fairly busy week for news of a totally mixed bag for you to wade through. The past week has also seen Xeikon Café staged in Lier, Belgium, and Sign & Digital UK take place at the NEC, so I’m pretty sure there will be more post-event news still to follow. The major Xeikon announcement of its entry into UV inkjet with new Panther technology appears on Tuesday, followed by a surprise announcement on Wednesday that Wim Maes, CEO of Xeikon is stepping down will leave in early May.

Key articles this week that deserve checking out come from Gareth Ward at the Print Business UK, and lead the headlines on Tuesday with Ricoh’s high-speed inkjet presses; followed with the leader on Wednesday, with observations from the recently released drupa Global Trends Report, which has seen litho biting back as the digital drive dips. Another of Gareth’s articles also appears on Friday, in which he provides his post-show impression of Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne in February – with inkjet now pushing firmly at the door of commercial print. You will find Xaar plc leading the news on Friday, announcing the official opening of its new 3D Centre on Nottingham Science Park in the UK earlier in the week; and Esko on Thursday, with its plans to debut Simplified Workflow for Labels at Labelexpo Europe, taking place in Brussels in September.

“There is no doubt that High Speed Sintering technology can transform 3D Printing from a low volume prototyping solution to a mainstream manufacturing process,’ said Professor Neil Hopkinson, the original inventor of the transformational High Speed Sintering technology, who heads up Xaar’s 3D division. ‘The step change to high volume manufacturing will be most efficiently achieved through partnerships with committed stakeholders across the supply chain. Our new 3D Centre in Nottingham is the ideal location for such partnerships to flourish.“

The usual collection of recent installation and sales successes began on Monday with Heidelberg Anicolor and Suprasetter CTP at Allura Printing in the United States; then Manroland Sheetfed at Copag in Brazil. On Tuesday we had Kartongbolaget in Sweden with a HP Indigo 30000 and TRESU iCoat coating line; and Gieselmann Druck in Bielefeld, Germany with a new Muller Martini Primera MC. Wednesday saw Cape Town-based RSA Litho add a Xerox 1000 Colour Press and Xerox Versant 80 from Bytes and Oxbow; followed by Marrs Printing & Packaging in the US with a KBA Rapida 106; and then Israeli digital photobook specialist Liel Albums with a new 8-colour Sawgrass system. Thursday saw Servinform in Spain become the latest transactional printer to adop t the high-speed Ricoh Pro VC60000; followed by Muller Martini with a Diamant MC 60 bookline for Pollina in Luçon, France. On Friday we had GPS Colour Graphics in Northern Ireland step up production with Fujifilm’s Superia CTP and Superia plates investment; while Columbus Production in the USA has added a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106; and lastly, Micropress in the UK has invested in EFI‘s Midmarket Print Suite MIS/ERP system.

We had new kit announced on Monday from both Hunkeler and SPGPrints; and then on Tuesday from Flint Group with new Thermal processor for flexo, in addition to Xeikon with its new Panther UV inkjet system for labels which is already mentioned above.

Other items to look out for are the survey from GWG; a new partnership for Sappi’s Biotech division; acquisitions by both Goss and Canon; a call for entries for the British Book Design Production Awards for 2017, with a deadline for entries of 30 June, and FESPA’s winner for the Wrap Master Design Competition.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with George Mecs from France competing in South Africa for the first time, and joining players from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa for this popular event. You’ll find it among Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find so much more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

A key news highlight appeared on Wednesday, as KBA released its Annual Report for 2016, recording the highest profit margin in the company’s history, coupled with a healthy double-digit increase in revenue, market share gains in packaging and digital printing, a solid order intake with a high order backlog as the company prepares to celebrate its 200th Anniversary later this year. You can also find more about KBA-Flexotecnica’s successful start to 2017 in Friday’s headlines.

The lead article on Tuesday, by Gareth Ward, featured Canon, as it looks to establish its Oce Colorado UV Gel inkjet as a third way between solvent and latex in roll to roll print.

You’ll find a lot of pre-show and pre-event news again this week, beginning with Esko’s European Prepress Innovation Tour on Monday; then Xeikon Café which takes place this coming week, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday Sign & Digital UK announced its lineup ahead of its 30th Anniversary show which also takes place this coming week at the NEC, Birmingham; and then a FESPA 2017 mention, set to take place in Hamburg in May.

On Thursday, Heidelberg and Gallus took the lead as they announced their lineup for Interpack 2017 taking place from 4 – 10 May in Dusseldorf, and on Friday, we have FINAT with the annual European Label Forum, set to take place from 7 – 9 June in Berlin; and lastly another early mention for InPrint 2017, set to take place in Munich in November, and once again co-located with Productronica. ICE Europe, which took place this week in Munich had mentions on both Thursday and Friday; and lastly, Lopec 2017, which takes place in Munich this coming week, is among Friday’s headlines.

Friday’s news was led by Manroland Web Systems as managing director Alexander Wassermann provides a brief background and facts about the new and innovative web offset and gravure hybrid Varioman press for flexible packaging printing, which is due to commence production at an international packaging printer early next year.

Key sales and installations successes this week came from Heidelberg USA at Adams Lithographing, and Renz UK in Leeds on Monday; from Heidelberg UK at A3 Design & Print in Surrey with a digital Versafire CP; then Essex-based trade finisher Filmdie with a new Horizon perfect binder and three-side trimmer from IFS; followed by Contiweb/DG with a Thallo press for identity and security print at De La Rue in Malta; and lastly Edale with a 7-colour press in Devon – all on Tuesday.  On Thursday, Cape Town-based Creative Brands in South Africa announced that it has added a Xerox X1000 Digital Colour Press from Oxbow and Bytes to boost productivity. This was followed by Polar in Portugal with a fourth new cutter equipped for labels at Calipolense in Vila Viçosa.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Ireland’s Cian Arthurs joining players from France, England, the United States and South Africa for this popular event – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you scroll down carefully.

Architect’s sketch of the new demo centre for digital and flexographic presses at KBA’s headquarters in Würzburg. — Nine months before the official ceremony to mark the 200th anniversary of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) in September 2017, the foundations were laid in January at the company’s Würzburg parent plant.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 17 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog on digital printing for packaging; the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Paul Lindström; and three new Online Features from KBA featuring sheetfed in both medium and large-format, as well as enhanced waterless web offset at Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei in Düsseldorf. (We’re catching up after communications glitch with KBA).

Lots of pre-show news among this weeks headlines with Canon Europe with a brand new machine debut, as well as EFI and Zünd at FESPA 2017 on Monday; Ricoh Europe with wide- and large-format inkjet, and Sun Chemical on Wednesday; and Mimaki Europe and Neschen on Friday. FESPA takes place in Hamburg from 8 – 12 May. Other major event coverage appears for Xeikon Café on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, set to take place from 28 – 31 March in Lier, Belgium; while on Thursday, Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers led the headlines as they announced their plans to present unique possibilities for new packaging concepts at Interpack 2017, taking place from 4 to 10 May in Düsseldorf.

On Tuesday, Sun Chemical announced that it will exhibit at Metpack from 2 – 6 May in Essen just 36km down the road from Dusseldorf, at the same time as Interpack which doesn’t make much sense to me. On Wednesday we have Graphispag in Barcelona, from 21 – 24 March; and lastly on Thursday from the OE-A as it presents the most innovative ideas and outlooks in a competition for members from the organic and printed electronics sectors at LOPEC 2017 in Munich, taking place on 28 and 29 March.

On Tuesday you will find interesting lead comment from Gareth Ward on Kodak, as it slowly edges towards the sale of its Prosper inkjet operation; while on Thursday, Koenig & Bauer announced the official construction start for its new digital and flexographic demo centre in Würzburg to commemorate its 200th Anniversary, as part of euro 6 million site upgrade.

There are a number of nice recent sales and installations this week, beginning with Manroland Sheetfed on Monday at AIIM. Tuesday saw Revista in Brazil with Eversify; KBA large-format sheetfed at DS Smith in Erlensee; KBA again on Thursday as it moves a high-spec Compacta 518 web offset press from Belgium to St. Petersburg in Russia; and on Friday, Heidelberg UK at Woking printer Optichrome, which has installed two high speed Versafire CP digital presses to replace Xerox machines. This was followed by KBA in the UK as it installs a Rapida 106 6-colour with coater at Offset Printing and Packaging in Kent; and lastly, H Heenemann in Berlin with a Muller Martini Finishing 4.0 solution, the Vareo perfect binder, as the ideal solution to handle digital print in shorter runs as it gears for the future with fast-changing market requirements.

The news doesn’t end there as there are still a number of excellent articles I haven’t mentioned. You’ll find them all if you scroll down carefully… including new software; the BPIF with Apprentices; Flint with global price increases for inks and varnishes; then Canon Europe as it offers a first step into professional-level application versatility with more finishing options.

Lastly, news on Friday as one of our long-standing friends, James Matthews-Paul, is appointed as IPEX 2017 Content Curator. James has already signed the London College of Fashion for a printed fashion catwalk as an early sign of radical changes that could follow, from an extrovert but very clever, passionate and dedicated industry analyst and journalist who always thinks outside the box. James is also of a younger generation with refreshing perspectives, which IPEX definitely needs after its last showing in London.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with South Africa’s Reinard Schuhknecht gearing up for his eleventh consecutive appearance in the popular competition – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 10 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 35 from the submissions of the past week, along with Laurel Brunner’s most recent Verdigris Blog and the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Paul Lindström on how printing companies can improve output quality, and No 23 in this current series.

Awards this week began with X-Rite on Monday with a prestigious iF Design Award for its TAC7 scanner; while on Tuesday, Unilux received a Sapphire Award for its industry-first LED-UV strobes, used in the inspection of inks and coatings.

Danaher’s Product Identification Platform, which includes Esko and X-Rite among many others, has acquired Israel’s AVT and its inline inspection systems, took Tuesday’s lead; while on  Wednesday, Kodak had the number one spot with its financial results for 2016, reporting net earnings of $16 million and an improvement of $91 million over 2015, with strong growth for key products, but still no finalisation or announcement of the buyer for its Prosper Inkjet Business, as it continues with the sale process for Prosper, while at the same time continues investing in the development of Ultrastream, its next-generation inkjet writing system. Many in the European trade press expected the announcement to coincide with this week’s financial results release.

Formset-ABC Printers in Cape Town, South Africa became the first company in Africa to invest in Muller Martini Vareo Perfect Binder for digital books, as it took the lead on Thursday. The contract was finalised at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne, Switzerland; while on Wednesday CTP Newspapers Cape Town announced its implementation of the Mellow Colour program from Mellow Colour UK and Digital View, Johannesburg.

Friday’s headlines were led by KBA, as it announces group participation for Interpack 2017 on a joint stand in Hall 12, featuring marking, print solutions, finishing and further processing for the most diverse forms of packaging at this year’s show in Düsseldorf in May. Other upcoming events include Contiweb and DG press ServiceS Open House in The Netherlands later this month; SPGPrints at Graphispag 2017 in Barcelona from 21 – 24 March; plus more on the 2017 Xeikon Café in Lier also later this month; and Printeriors from 8 to 12 May 2017 in Hamburg; and then Fujifilm UK which will demonstrate the Jet Press 720S over 21 days in May with live jobs – all in the news on Monday. EyeC announced its participation at Interpack on Wednesday; and we had more for Xeikon Café on Thursday, together with news from Tonejet and Rockwell Automation for their joint lineup at Interpack 2017.

More post-show success at Hunkeler Innovationdays came from Ricoh Europe on Tuesday; together with news from EuroShop which took place in Düsseldorf this week. On Wednesday recent Inca Onset X investments sparked a year of transformation for print businesses across Europe, according to Inca distributor Fujifilm UK, with an impressive list of major high-profile successes to back up its claim.

On Friday, the world’s biggest inkjet event, TheIJC (The Inkjet Conference) announced that it will return on 24 – 25 October 2017 to Swissôtel in Neuss, Düsseldorf. More from FESPA 2017 in Hamburg in May with its seminar programme; also from Canon announcing the FESPA launch of its new Océ Colorado wide-format device; and lastly Drytac at FESPA.

There‘s much more, including sales and installations successes, new kit, a new state-of-the-art Website from Hybrid; software upgrades and more. Please check them all out carefully.

The tailender once again goes to another update on Friday for the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Durban’s Emil Maehler set to inspire.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 03 February 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of 25 of the best received during the past seven days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Environmental Blog, and a new addition in Online Features Chapter 03, as Blömeke opens up new areas of business with the first Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75-5 LE UV to be installed in Germany.

“Our fourth quarter results demonstrate that we are realizing significant benefits from our Strategic Transformation program,” said Jeff Jacobson, Xerox chief executive officer. “We delivered strong margins that countered expected pressure on revenue.” Jacobson continued, “With the separation of Conduent now complete, we turn our full attention to delivering on our strategy, which includes pursuing the growing areas of the market. As the strategy begins to yield results, our revenue trajectory is expected to improve over time while we expand our margins and continue to generate strong cash flows.”

We had financial results from UPM on Tuesday and Xerox on Thursday; while UPM Biofuels took Monday’s lead slot, and Baldwin’s acquisition of Air Motion Systems led the headlines on Wednesday. EFI’s acquisition of Xerox FreeFlow DFE software also appears among Friday’s headlines. On Monday we reported the death of Xeikon’s founder Lucien De Schamphelaere on 20 January, at the age of 85; while on Friday, we were extremely sad to report the death of South Africa’s Lambert Retief, one of Paarl and Cape Town’s greatest entrepreneurs, who died on Thursday 26 January after losing a short battle with brain cancer. He was only 64. A memorial service to celebrate Retief’s life was held at Anura Vineyards in Klapmuts (near Paarl), on Friday 3 February.
On Wednesday, Sappi announced its new Website which highlights its global presence with increased functionality and robust educational resources. Please take look. It’s impressive. Also on Wednesday, Ricoh Europe announced the launch of the new Ricoh Pro C5200s series to enable print service providers to broaden their services.

You’ll find a good selection of news relating to upcoming events beginning with Xeikon at Hunkeler Innovationdays later this month; then for Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations in March in Belgium; Kornit at C!Print in Lyon last week; FESPA in Hamburg in May; and from Sign & Digital UK in March at the NEC; while IST (UK) will exhibit at PrintWeekLive! in Coventry in May.
Recent notable installations this week came from Heidelberg UK with Versafire CV digital; Renz UK; Heidelberg USA with a Speedmaster long-perfector equipped for coating and UV; from KBA North America with a large-format seven-colour Rapida with full UV; then Heidelberg in Germany with the first Speedmaster XL 75-5 LE UV with matching service package; followed by EFI Vutek wide-format in Ireland; Polar in the UK; and lastly Meech static control, in the UK and Europe.

The tailender goes to the PIA, which on Tuesday opened submissions for the 2017 InterTech Technology Awards with a 2 June deadline.

That’s about it until next time. I hope you have a good week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

ValueTrendRadar Analysis:
Perspektiven in der Wertschöpfung mit Print (Teil 3)

Von Andreas Weber, Head of Value

  1. Print in seiner (globalen) wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung
  2. (Unvermutete) Wachstumstreiber im Print-Geschäft

Siehe: „ValueCheck! — Alert! Digital Print crashes! More worse than expected!“

#drupa2016 review Vortrag Andreas Weber Swiss Publishing Day 2016.022

Auszug aus dem Vortrag von Andreas Weber: #drupa2016 Review. Grafik: Chart von Xerox, drupa Pressekonferenz am 1. Juni 2016

Screenshots zur Kursentwicklung börsennotierter Digitaldruck-Technikkonzenen. Stand 11. Oktober 2016. Quellen: MSN Money, Yahoo! Finanzen, OnVista, Wallstreet Online.

ValuePublishing Big Data Visuals.001

Halbjahr 2016)

  • Segment Sheetfed (Bogendruck): >22 Prozent Wachstum bei 291,7 Millionen Euro Umsatz und 8,6 Millionen Segmentgewinn.
  • Segment Special (v. a. Wertpapierdruck und flexibler Verpackungsdruck): >37 Prozent Wachstum bei 233,9 Millionen Euro Umsatz und 20,1 Millionen Segmentgewinn.
  • Segment Digital & Web (industrieller Digital- und Rotationsdruck): >75 Prozent Wachstum bei 64,5 Millionen Umsatz und -0,9 Millionen Segmentgewinn.

Chancen

Herausforderungen

Heideldruck-Video: „drupa 2016: Smart Print Shop – Smart Services – Smart Collaboration“

Executive summary of analysis by Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Print is becoming increasingly relevant – not only on the stock markets, but also and in particular with professional investors.

However, a closer look throws up a great many questions and even contradictions for (industry) outsiders. It is virtually impossible to obtain an overview of the position of “print as a business” from the current situation. This is because print is big – with an annual turnover of some US$898 billion (approx. €830 billion) in 2015.

In order to be able to evaluate print correctly, three different aspects need to be examined and assessed:

  1. (Global) economic importance of print
  2. (Unexpected) growth drivers in the print business
  3. Positioning and strategies of technology suppliers

1. (Global) economic importance of print

  • The print market is extremely important, rivaling automotive engineering, the financial sector, and advertising. This is actually nothing new and has been the case for generations!
  • One key trend in the print shop market is that print shops are becoming leaner, but added value needs to increase despite shrinking production volumes. Print shops must therefore continue investing so as to improve production efficiency and unlock new growth markets.
  • drupa 2016 made it clear on a global level that print media have by no means had their day and can be put to more effective use than ever. It is therefore wrong to paint a gloomy picture. The prospects are excellent!
  • The only way to add more value with print, though, is to stimulate the demand for modern-day print products on a sustained basis. Print doesn’t sell itself!
  • New kinds of striking concepts that are geared to market requirements and adopt an integrative approach to the professional manufacture, distribution, and use of print media hold the key to the future of print.
  • In order to be successful in the printing industry, it is vital not to rely solely on vertical positioning in individual applications, but to cater specifically to customer and market needs and ensure continuous innovation leadership.

2. (Unexpected) growth drivers in the print business

A) Strong growth impetus for print thanks to digital pioneers

B) Online print – the most dynamic growth segment at present

  • More than any other part of the printing industry, the online print sector is a pacesetter that is already seeing strong sales, with significantly higher double-digit growth and maximum profitability thanks to standardization and automation.
  • Relevant technical innovations are identified extremely quickly and implemented in a way that immediately helps add value.
  • The boom in mass customization in print will accelerate this development.

C) Trendsetting 4D printing opens up new dimensions

  • The 4D graphic printing process is one of the world’s most important emerging technologies (Gartner) and is only just getting started on the market. It’s still too early to provide valid market data/KPIs, but a look at the dynamic growth of 3D printing as a whole enables parallels to be drawn and evaluated.
  • The considerable importance and excellent prospects of 4D printing are in any case clear. Not only print shops and versatile online print businesses are involved, but also all kinds of other companies, including manufacturers of consumer goods, the commercial sector, and even online startups.

D) Packaging – core competence enjoying extremely strong growth worldwide

  • Almost half of global print sales are generated by packaging and label printing and the total will have reached around €472 billion by 2018 (approx. €390 billion in 2015).
  • The packaging and label printing market is currently expanding by some €25 billion each year and will soon account for over 50 percent of the global print volume. Online trade and multichannel applications including communication at the point of sale are key growth drivers.
  • Offset and flexographic printing are by far the most important processes and will still have to handle the bulk of production in 10 years’ time. Digital printing technologies (especially inkjet printing) are growing at an above-average rate – in particular thanks to manufacturers working together – but still remain at a low level in terms of market share.
  • Those print shops that offer integrated solutions geared to customers, a high level of automation/standardization, and digital process expertise are one step ahead of the rest.

3. Positioning and strategies of technology suppliers – from compartmentalized thinking to a customer-focused holistic approach

  • There are thousands of print and paper technology suppliers. Printing industry customers are confronted with a multitude of identical or similar offers.
  • Despite everything – and probably also due to the ever-present digital print manufacturers who like nothing better than to predict the demise of print if the industry fails to invest in digital printing – manufacturers using traditional offset, gravure, and flexographic technologies appeared to be falling behind.
  • However, despite having to face serious crises that threatened their very existence, the long-established groups Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heideldruck) and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) have maintained their strong position and been completely revitalized.
  • The world of offset printing, which was left for dead, has been successfully resuscitated and proactively integrated into the world of digital printing. Digital printing technology, on the other hand, remains compartmentalized with its standalone solutions and relies on displacing existing solutions through substitution.
  • Investors and the stock exchange acknowledged the renaissance of German companies KBA and Heideldruck at drupa 2016. The sales and earnings of both have improved as a result – with confident forecasts of upward share price movement.
  • For companies focusing uniquely on digital printing technology, on the other hand, big ambitions and significant research outlay have not had a positive impact on their share price to date.
  • The two German printing press manufacturers KBA and Heideldruck – the industry frontrunners – are successfully defending their leading positions and once again enjoying profitable growth. As things stand at present, Heideldruck has the best chance of building on its dominant market position in the digital era thanks to its holistic and expedient digitization strategy focusing on print.
  • Consequently, Heideldruck has become the pacesetter in the digital transformation of the global printing industry. In addition to different printing technologies, the entire print shop management process – including digital administrative/process control and cloud-based services – is being incorporated for optimum networking. The benchmark here is to ensure the best possible customer focus.
