Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 09 June 2017

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 23 news items for you, plus Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog which looks at ‘Waste and guilt’, providing food for thought. In Online Features, we have a rather special article on 200 Years Koenig & Bauer, which has travelled an innovation-lined road from the very first cylinder press to today’s digital print and more, and is now set to celebrate its 200th Anniversary in Würzburg in August.

Heidelberg dominated the lead headlines on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; then on Wednesday, we had Komori from Gareth Ward, featuring pharmaceutical carton printer and packager, Chester Medical Solutions, which has capped an investment programme with the UK’s first of Komori’s new B2 presses for carton work; then on Friday, KBA’s 200th Anniversary.

”The new strategy ’Heidelberg goes digital’ clearly convinced at the press conference — which at the same time caused a jump in the course of one year. Despite the complexity, the Heideldruck CEO Hundsdörfer and the Chief Financial Officer Kaliebe were able to present their views and arguments in a convincing and comprehensible manner. The Heidelberg Digital Business and Services (HDB) Board of Management is playing a key role, as new business models philosophies are being created for Heideldruck as well as for customers and partners. —Andreas Weber, Head of Value. Of particular importance this week is Heidelberg’s new growth strategy until 2022, presented at its Annual Press Conference held on Wednesday, along with the release of its Annual Report for 2016/2017, plus two acquisitions announcements. The first of which actually led Tuesday’s headlines with the takeover of technical documentation software provider DOCUFY, and set to strengthen Heidelberg’s Digital Platforms division; with the second on Thursday, as Heidelberg confirms it has taken over Fujifilm‘s coatings and pressroom chemicals operations in the EMEA region, situated in Kruibeke in Belgium, and Reutlingen in Germany.

Key sales and installations this week came from Heidelberg UK at 4-Print with a Versafire CP digital press and Suprasetter CTP system, Durst at Image Data in the UK with superwide-format for fabrics (also from Gareth Ward); and Xerox at Inkfish in Cape Town on Monday; Inca Digital in Scandinavia on Tuesday; Komori in the UK on Wednesday (mentioned above); and Ryobi in the UK at Northend Creative on Thursday; then Hybrid Software in Italy, IFS in the UK with Horizon, and Manroland Web at Quad/Graphics in North America on Friday.

You’ll also find software upgrades and new kit this week from Agfa and Xaar on Monday; new cobalt-free Inks from Huber on Tuesday; and productivity boosts for Highcon Euclid on Friday.

The tailender this week goes to Ricoh on Wednesday as the Ghent Workgroup announces that Ricoh has successfully achieved GWG PDF Preflight Certification.

That’s all until next time. You find more not mentioned below if you scroll down carefully, particularly for Labelexpo Europe taking place in Brussels from 25 – 28 September.

With best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 24 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 articles from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, explaining the international standard for assessing the potential deinkability of print; and news from Messe Düsseldorf advising that the 4th Global Trends Report 2017 is now available to order, with a free Executive Summary you can download in a choice of seven languages. You can also purchase the full report from Messe Düsseldorf’s Online Shop in English or German for a nominal fee.

A key news highlight appeared on Wednesday, as KBA released its Annual Report for 2016, recording the highest profit margin in the company’s history, coupled with a healthy double-digit increase in revenue, market share gains in packaging and digital printing, a solid order intake with a high order backlog as the company prepares to celebrate its 200th Anniversary later this year. You can also find more about KBA-Flexotecnica’s successful start to 2017 in Friday’s headlines.

The lead article on Tuesday, by Gareth Ward, featured Canon, as it looks to establish its Oce Colorado UV Gel inkjet as a third way between solvent and latex in roll to roll print.

You’ll find a lot of pre-show and pre-event news again this week, beginning with Esko’s European Prepress Innovation Tour on Monday; then Xeikon Café which takes place this coming week, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday Sign & Digital UK announced its lineup ahead of its 30th Anniversary show which also takes place this coming week at the NEC, Birmingham; and then a FESPA 2017 mention, set to take place in Hamburg in May.

On Thursday, Heidelberg and Gallus took the lead as they announced their lineup for Interpack 2017 taking place from 4 – 10 May in Dusseldorf, and on Friday, we have FINAT with the annual European Label Forum, set to take place from 7 – 9 June in Berlin; and lastly another early mention for InPrint 2017, set to take place in Munich in November, and once again co-located with Productronica. ICE Europe, which took place this week in Munich had mentions on both Thursday and Friday; and lastly, Lopec 2017, which takes place in Munich this coming week, is among Friday’s headlines.

Friday’s news was led by Manroland Web Systems as managing director Alexander Wassermann provides a brief background and facts about the new and innovative web offset and gravure hybrid Varioman press for flexible packaging printing, which is due to commence production at an international packaging printer early next year.

Key sales and installations successes this week came from Heidelberg USA at Adams Lithographing, and Renz UK in Leeds on Monday; from Heidelberg UK at A3 Design & Print in Surrey with a digital Versafire CP; then Essex-based trade finisher Filmdie with a new Horizon perfect binder and three-side trimmer from IFS; followed by Contiweb/DG with a Thallo press for identity and security print at De La Rue in Malta; and lastly Edale with a 7-colour press in Devon – all on Tuesday.  On Thursday, Cape Town-based Creative Brands in South Africa announced that it has added a Xerox X1000 Digital Colour Press from Oxbow and Bytes to boost productivity. This was followed by Polar in Portugal with a fourth new cutter equipped for labels at Calipolense in Vila Viçosa.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Ireland’s Cian Arthurs joining players from France, England, the United States and South Africa for this popular event – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of 26 of the best received over the past seven days, along with Laurel Brunner’s most recent Verdigris Blog; the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Sonja Angerer and number 21 in this series; and in Online Features – The BPIFs Printing Outlook for Q1 2017; and a brand new series from Andreas Weber beginning with an exclusive interview with head of digital sales and general manager of Digital Sheetfed at Heidelberg, Montserrat Peidro-Insa. In our drupa Newsroom, as well as leading Friday’s headlines, the world’s most important trade fair for printing technologies has been pulled forward by a week and will now be held from 16 to 26 June 2020 to avoid European holiday clashes for exhibitors and visitors alike.

“We keep our promises: sustainable industrial production with premium quality digital printing.” Montserrat Peidro-Insa, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG

The week’s news began with Heidelberg on Monday as it installed the 1000th VLF printing unit as part of a new press for Green Bay packaging in Wisconsin. On Tuesday Tony Langley took the lead: firstly with the extremely positive Annual Report and 2016 ahievements by his Group; and then secondly with an article by Gareth Ward which highlights Manroland Sheetfed being happy as a successful profit-making press manufacturer, five years on since Langley Holdings rescued Manroland’s global sheetfed press business from administration.

New kit this week announced by Ricoh with a new high-speed inkjet web appears on Wednesday; and Kodak with its new Prinergy Cloud analytics service offering appears on Friday.

Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017, taking place in Lucerne from 20 – 23 February made the headlines on Monday with UPM; on Tuesday from Muller Martini and Hunkeler with a planned world premiere to showcase an Integrated Finishing 4.0 Workflow. While on Thursday, Duplo announced that it will be showcasing its latest innovations at the Lucerne event next week.

Other show-related news this week came from Sun Chemical at LOPEC 2017 on Thursday; and from SPGPrints for Label&Print at the NEC on Friday. Both events take place in March.

Major orders and installations (in addition to Heidelberg mentioned above) include Bytes with Xerox and Cape Office Machines in Cape Town, at Asset print on Monday as it opens a new branch in Rondebosch with a new Xerox press; IFS with Horizon at In Print UK; and PurePrint Group UK with five Renz solutions – all on Monday. On Tuesday, Kingfisher Press in the UK has added a Fujifilm Jet Press 720S digital inket sheetfed press for quality short-run work. On Wednesday, We’ll Corporation in Ishikawa gets a new Muller Martini Finishing 4.0 solution for the production of teaching materials; while Spanish packaging printer Omnipack has invested in an eight-colour Roland 700 PLV 8/0-4/4 HiPrint press; and in the UK, Qualvis Print & Packaging returns to Heidelberg for a new platesetter to double output over an older model. Thursday saw Direct Printing Impressions in West Caldwell, NJ boost productivity by 40 per cent with its new Speedmaster CD 102-X. To round of the week on Friday, Stephens & George Print Group in Wales has returned to Heidelberg for two high-speed high-productivity Stahlfolders launched at drupa last year. Lastly, London-based Leycol Print looks to boost business with Fujifilm‘s Superia LH-PJE plates.

The tailender goes to the ‘Oupa’ of South African disabled golf, Christo de Jager, as he marks a decade of Opens at the 2017 Canon South Africa Disabled Gold Open in Cape Town in May.

That’s it until next time. Do have a good week ahead. You’ll find a lot more below.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Consumers associate printed newspapers with waste, but correcting this impression doesn’t seem to be a priority for the newspaper industry.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 07 October 2016

Welcome to another roundup with 28 news articles posted during the past week, plus Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog added on Friday, entitled Newspapers and Change. In her opening paragraph Laurel states: ‘Newspaper publishers should be doing much more to counter perception that print is bad for the environment. Consumers associate printed newspapers with waste, but correcting this impression doesn’t seem to be a priority for the newspaper industry. This has to change, even though publishers may have other things on their minds like the precipitous decline in print sales.’ You can read the rest of the article by using the link in the Verdigris section below.

The latest and No 10 in the series of Wild Format Technology Guides by Sonja Angerer was added this week. Entitled The Art and Science of Very Fine Drops, it explains why Inkjet is unique amongst printing technologies, where there is no other option to print on such a wide varieties of substrates with such efficiency and ease. Enjoy it. You can download an illustrated PDF from the link in the article below.

Upcoming events that feature prominently this week include The Print Show 2016, which opens its doors at the NEC in Birmingham tomorrow. You’ll find news from several exhibitors, including Sawgrass on Tuesday, and Intec on both Thursday and Friday, with the lead article on Friday taken from Gareth Ward at the Print Business, devoted to his take on the show, now in its second year and with an increase in demand for space this time around. It’s on until Thursday 13 October and has some nice offerings.

Domino Digital Printing Solutions will showcase a range of technologies at All4pack 2016 in Paris from 14 to 17 November. The show was previously known as Emballage. On Tuesday, Martin Bailey at Global Graphics led the news, as Global announced it is to chair a new ISO task force for a new PDF production workflow standard that will make it possible to describe what a final printed piece is supposed to look like. Leading the news on Thursday: KBA Report 49 is now available either as a printed version or to download online in multiple languages from KBA using the link in the article. The theme is ‘Print is on the up once more’, as this latest issue takes a closer look at some of innovations unveiled at drupa 2016.

There’s so much more for you is you scroll down, including some nice orders and installations including Ricoh in multiple European countries including France, The Netherlands and Finland; Muller Martini in Ghana; Highcon in Germany; Heidelberg UK, Xeikon with ThermoFlexX also in the UK; IFS with Foliant in the UK, Heidelberg USA, Taopix in Germany for an online platform; and MPS in The Netherlands.

As my tailender this week is Wednesday’s lead article as UPM Raflatac partners on the reforestation project of Jaguari River in Brazil to help protect this vital ecosystem; with a stunning pic to go with it.

My main MacBook’s screen decided to pack up this morning which is rather hampering the way I usually work, so that’s all until next time. Until then. My best regards,

Mike Hilton

#drupa2016 Review Teil 1 Key Visual.001

drupa2016 ValuePublshing Review Social Media Heroes.001

Teil 1 — Die #drupa2016 als Prüfstein für die Kommunikationsfähigkeit der Printbranche

Vorbemerkung

In medias res

„Touch the future“.

— Puh! — TOTALLY LOST IN DETAILS ?!?

ValuePublishing Mike Hilton News Review 24062016.001

  • a) als beste Nachrichten- und Interaktionsquelle — zur Erinnerung: auf Twitter tummeln sich die engagierten, kompetenten Fachleute, die an Innovation und qualitativen News/Facts & Meinungen/Kommentierungen in Echtzeit interessiert sind;

  1. #drupa2016
  2. #BigData
  3. #Print
  4. #Innovation
  5. #Storify (zur Doku/Visualisierung von relevanten Tweets)
  6. #unleashprint (das Canon-Motto)
  7. #cloud
  8. #mail
  9. #digitalcutting
  10. #drupa (viele hatten dies als Hashtag genutzt, statt sinnvollerweise #drupa2016)

Vortrag Andreas Weber Swiss Publishing Days 2016.037

Siehe: #drupa2016 review — All about the role of print in the communications mix sowie #drupa mc — print re-invented!

Fazit Teil 1

Vortrag Andreas Weber Swiss Publishing Days 2016.001

Juni 2016 in Winterthur.

— Siehe dazu meine Traumgeschichte „Danke Benny. Touch the future again and again…”

ValuePublishing #drupa20150 Review.001

Petra Lüftner kommentierte am 4. Juli 2016 per XING als Reaktion auf mein Traum-Erlebnis — Danke, Benny! Touch the future again and again…

07-drupa2016 ValuePublishing Storify on HeideldruckWeitere Informationen zum Comeback von Heideldruck: ValueStorify „drupa 2016 — #Heideldruck: Back to profitable growth!“ mit Live-Texten, -Fotos, -Videos.

  • Aus dem Web resp. der Social Media-Welt und via Cloud-Services explodiert die Datenmenge dessen, was aus der virtuellen Welt ins Print überführt wird;

Ganz nah an Big Data: Print 4.0 braucht Communication 4.0

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 02 June
Welcome to another roundup of news for the past few days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs from Friday of last week and the week before, and a new article in Online Features from Druckteam Berlin and Heidelberg. You’ll also find 18 new articles in our FESPA Newsroom, bringing to the total for FESPA Digital to 73, and for FESPA News to 11, following what turned out to be a fantastic event in Munich, and a reminder of how proper trade shows really should be after the rather uninspiring and sharp contrast of Ipex in London a couple of months ago. On the very first evening of FESPA, Durst certainly set the tone and the standard with a magnificent event for the international trade press at BMW Welt near Munich. EFI followed the next day with an excellent networking press lunch for which it is becoming renowned at major exhibitions, where such events provide invaluable time-out and are appreciated. A sincere thank you to both Durst and EFI.FESPA this year not only looked and felt like a real trade show should (and used to do), as it had all the right exhibitors, new innovations, lots of new kit, new software and materials or substrates, visitors in both quality and numbers, the right buzz, the essential vibe, the enthusiasm, the networking, the sales and quality leads, and to top all of that, the sun came out to provide glorious weather for the duration of the event. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the tiresome trek on the U-Bahn to and from Messe Munich to the city, which like Munich’s airport, is an awful long way from the city centre. In fact, you can fly to Düsseldorf in the same time that it takes to get to the Hauptbahnhof on the train from either the Messe or the Airport, so next year’s event in Cologne (also Germany, which is a big plus-factor for those travelling from the rest of Europe and even further afield) should enable FESPA to again break this year’s all-time records, within an even more compact and visitor-friendly infrastructure from 18 – 22 May 2015, when the weather should also be ideal.Next stop, of course, is FESPA Africa 2014 at the Gallagher Convention and Exhibition Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, from 2 – 4 July, incorporating both the Sign Africa and Visual Communications Africa events.

As there aren’t that many news items for you to go through due to serious MacBook-related problems during my extended trip, I shall leave you to browse through them without prompts from me, apart from drawing attention to the new appointments announced on Wednesday from KBA, Kodak and EFI, and QuadTech’s new partnership with Muller Martini for its web presses. But there’s much more if you take your time when browsing through the headlines.including Screen’s appointment of Rotocon as Southern Africa reseller for the Truepress Jet digital label press. This follows Ipex Machinery’s appointment to handle both Screen wide-format and Screen high-speed digital inkjet web presses in the region. Kemtek retains Screen prepress and computer-to-plate.

The tailender this week goes to HP on Friday, as it expands production inkjet possibilities with a new HP Priming Solution, and the HP T260 660mm-wide Mono Inkjet Web Press for book production; and in today’s headlines you will find a complete Muller Martini SigmaLine with HP T300 Web Press and inline Acoro A5 perfect binder: a world premiere in this form at Rodona in Pamplona, Spain for soft cover book production.

Until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Thursday 17 April

Welcome to another roundup of news for the past week, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog.

Rather a short week this week, due to the Easter long weekend in most countries, and another short week ahead, too. Therefore, I shall also try keep it brief this time.

Lots of good pre-FESPA news for this year’s Digital and Fabric events which take place in Munich from 20 to 23 May; as well as from Xeikon for its planned Xeikon Cafe on Packaging Innovations to be held at its premises in Lier, Belgium, at the same time – from 20 to 22 May. Then there’s Sign & Digital UK which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, UK from 29 April until 1 May; Metpack in Essen, Germany from 6 to 10 May; and the really big one which many have been waiting for will be Interpack in Düsseldorf, Germany from 8 to 14 May. Don’t miss KBA and the Frog King leading the headlines on Wednesday! On the other side of the pond, International Sign Expo will also take place in Orlando from 23 to 23 April.

In addition to the above, on Thursday, Muller Martini issued an invitation to attend its 50th anniversary Open House at its new web printing Print Technology Centre in Maulburg, Germany, on 6 and 7 May, so we have a very busy month ahead of us to look forward to in the Merry month of May!. And although it is a little more than two years away, you will find the latest article relating to drupa 2016 from Andreas Weber in our drupa 2016 Newsroom, featuring an exclusive talk with Sabine Geldermann, drupa’s new director at Messe Düsseldorf.

Breaking news this week from EFI on Thursday, when the company revealed its latest financial results and a record first quarter, followed by its latest acquisition, in Europe for a change. On Tuesday, KBA subsidiary KBA-MePrint AG, announced the appointment of Sven Michael as its new CEO, and an internal promotion, which is always nice to hear. On Thursday, Sappi Europe SA announced the appointment of Stephen Blyth as its new Chief Financial Officer from 1 July 2014, and once again, a promotion from within.

Another major announcement this week came from Kodak and Manroland Web Systems as they inked an Authorised Reseller Agreement for integrated high-speed Kodak Prosper S-Series inkjet systems, whereby Manroland Web Systems now offers inkjet upgrades and makes variable printing even more attractive and accessible for the newspaper market. Kodak Prosper S30 heads with Stream inkjet technology run at full web offset production speeds. You’ll find links to another four related articles in the announcements made on Thursday.

As for the most recent sales and installations this week, don’t miss Screen on Monday with a Truepress Jet W1632UV in The Netherlands at Aelen & van Leeuwen; Screen again on Tuesday with a Truepress Jet 520 at Baumer AG in Switzerland; and then UKP Worldwide in the UK, with a Ricoh Pro C751 digital press. On Wednesday, Nela disclosed several recent installations for automated plate production systems for newspapers in Germany, Switzerland and Norway; and TG Print & Design in Woolwich Arsenal, London pushes into the ultra-high quality market with a LumeJet S200 inkless digital printing system. Newcastle, Australia print company WHO, has installed a new Heidelberg SX52 press; and Danish company Skanket has expanded its capacity with a second MPS EF UV flexo press. On Thursday to complete the week on a high note, Liverpool-based company S Barber is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with the installation of a Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74-5.

In Online Features, you will also discover Pim Print in The Netherlands, which has successfully adopted the Callas pdfToolbox Server, the workflow package that some consider to be only suitable for larger companies.

The tailender this week goes to Antalis South Africa (Monday), as the company scooped two awards from Kodak. The Outstanding Performance of Workflow Sales, and the Outstanding Performance Processless Plate Sales in the EAMER Region. The awards were presented to Ronnie Louw, Antalis’ regional manager Western Cape in Istanbul, Turkey. At the same event, Kodak also named Korozo as its first Certified Partner in Turkey, Middle East and Africa for Kodak Flexcel NX Plates.

I think that’s about it for this week, so until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Dear Andreas,

Backtracking slightly, but also show-related is the announcement leading Tuesday’s news from Informa Exhibitions, organisers of Ipex 2014 which I mentioned last week, following the withdrawal of HP, Heidelberg, Agfa and Kolbus. I have tried to consider carefully what Informa is now planning, in the form of an investment of one million pounds in a Hosted Buyer Programme. It would appear to be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction and again, I think they have misread and misunderstood what perhaps needs to be done. The way our major manufacturers need to do business successfully is changing and has changed dramatically in recent years, and to provide a freebie trip to equipment buyers is not an answer.

They would go anyway, so I really do think it’s a waste of money which could be better spent in getting the exhibitors’ customers’ customers to the event – the print buyers and the creatives and the marketing people from the corporates and the leading brand owners, who drive the ever changing demands made upon printers, in order to better inform them and to better educate them and to get them to better understand what the machinery manufacturers and software developers really have to offer printers today to boost print production and quality and to bring down turnaround times – from which they ultimately benefit. At the end of the day, this will then result in machinery sales, surely?

Hardly anyone these days actually goes to a show to buy a machine unless it’s been pre-arranged to provide show news. The process tends to be much more involved and take a lot longer over an extended period of time, unlike shopping in a supermarket. The initial thrust and attraction has to be beyond the traditional printer or print service provider – however large or small – and to get away from all the hype and to boost print on paper, board and other substrates and to then show how this can be extended further to multi-media… but it obviously has to start with or be centred around print!

A post-drupa article from Andreas Weber also highlighted this need after drupa in May, entitled: ‘Oops! Where have all the clients for print production gone?’  If you read the article (in our drupa Newsroom) and then combine Andreas’ analysis with what I have briefly tried to say in the paragraph above – then perhaps you will understand what I am driving at… and why I am critical. I just think that the show’s organisers are a little off-track and still do not understand what needs to be done – not just by them – but by all show organisers. I also don’t profess to know all the answers either, but it should not start with providing freebie trips for buyers! It’s been done before by many of the major machinery manufacturers and their distributors and has failed rather dismally at times. There’s a lot of other good news again this week covering a host of subjects from sales successes and installations to the latest developments and upgrades in software and inks, and much more for you to check out.

That’s it again from me until next week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
