Pitney Bowes Inkjet System

Major step for Pitney Bowes: a new all-in-one mid-volume print and mail solution system

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 14 September 2015 by Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 11 September, which this week draws attention to ISO, which is currently reviewing an important document, the ISO Guide 64. For the printing industry, and indeed all product manufacturers, this snappy tome makes for interesting-ish reading. Its purpose is to explain how to take environmental concerns into account when creating product standards. Laurel also provides some words of warning, so please don’t miss it!

The news this week is once again a mixed bag with several articles related to Graph Expo, which opened yesterday, Sunday 13 and runs until Wednesday 16 September, at McCormick Place in Chicago. You’ll find some extremely interesting and important announcements led by EFI and Scodix on Wednesday, followed by Xerox and Highcon on Thursday. Friday saw Kodak with BDT; then Xeikon with Alwan, and again Xerox. I’m sure there will be several more during the week ahead.

Other upcoming show news appeared on Monday, for The Inkjet Conference in Neuss / Düsseldorf in October; and then from IFS for Print Efficiently taking place next month in Hemel Hempstead. From Sun Chemical at Glassprint in November in Düsseldorf; on Wednesday from Agfa as it prepares to launch the next generation of its chemistry-free violet plates at the World Publishing Expo 2015 in Hamburg, early next month. You’ll also find announcements from Asahi for Labelexpo at the end of September; and from Durst at Vitrum 2015 in Milan, from 6 – 9 October with its next generation glass printer.

On Tuesday, Sappi Europe led the headlines in announcing an extended portfolio of its specialist Algro base papers for thermal printing.  UPM took the lead on Thursday, as it has again been listed as the industry leader in the Dow Jones European and World Sustainability Indices. On Friday, Goss International took pole position as it announced twenty years of leading press automation technology with Autoplate, a key milestone in the development of web offset printing. Autoplate automatic plate-changing was first introduced on the M-600 press in 1995, offering the ability to plate up an entire web press in less than three minutes. Today, more than 2100 Goss Autoplate units are in operation on a range of commercial and newspaper presses worldwide.

There are several nice sales and installations for you again this week, from Xerox and Bytes at Asset Print in Cape Town, from Fujifilm, Domino with digital labels in the UK, Highcon with a first in France, and also from Heidelberg UK with another Speedmaster. You will also find the latest software release from Axaio, and a new low odour eco-solvent alternative inkjet ink series from Sun Chemical for Roland devices.

The tailender this week quite literally, as it is the last item in the news on Friday, goes to Manroland Sheetfed, which has invested 70,000 Euros in a new CNC machining centre for apprentices in Offenbach.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find a couple more if you scroll down carefully. And we will add the lastest news from GraphExpo on-the-fly!

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News from 31 August 2015 | By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 04 September, which this week travels to Japan, where the Japanese Federation of Printing Industries has become involved in paper recycling and developed a simple and effective system with comprehensive guidelines, a checklist and an online database of consumables, to which printers and print buyers can refer in order to work out what the ranking of the final product will be. It’s a simple and effective system that other countries should consider adopting.

News again this week was a little on the lean side to say the least, with only 19 articles for you to browse through. Upcoming Graph Expo in Chicago featured with announcements led by Heidelberg on Monday, and EFI and QuadTech on Tuesday and Thursday. We also had news from AMS and SPGPrints on Friday for Labelexpo in Brussels, and earlier in the week from Onyx at Viscom in Paris. On Wednesday, Duplo provided an update for London Calling Focus in November.

Leading Thursday’s headlines, drupa 2016 announced the start of its world tour at Igas in Japan on 12 September, followed by Graph Expo in Chicago on 14 September, as part of 40 planned global pre-drupa events embracing all five continents for next year’s show, which begins at the end of May and into June 2016. You can use the drupa banners on our Home Page at any time to take you to its Website.

Installations and sales successes this week include KBA with two Commander CL newspaper presses for Oppermann Druck in Germany; and Manroland Sheetfed with an eight-colour Roland 700 perfector and a seven-colour Roland 700 HiPrint for Kawashima in Japan. Then, KBA sheetfed with two long specially configured eight- and nine-colour Rapida UV presses for Beyer Graphics in New YorkState in the U.S.A. While in Cap e Town, South Africa, commercial printer Digital Express announced a twin buy of two Xerox Versant 2100s to expand its digital offerings. Finally, Kube in the UK is adding a five-colour Speedmaster XL 75-5+coater and Inpress Control 2 from Heidelberg.

A special mention this week for Ricoh Europe which announced a new Clickable Paper White Paper on Thursday, highlighting the importance of interactive print in direct marketing campaigns. You can download this via the link in the article.

The tailender this week goes to the fourteen new apprentices and trainees who began their working careers at Manroland Web Systems in Augsburg on 1 September, and leads the headlines on Friday.

That’s it until next time. There’s a bit more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Drinkable Book 2015

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 30 August 2015 by Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 28 August, which examines the Drinkable Book which uses silver nanoparticles to create an antimicrobial paper that is an effective water purifier. The Drinkable Book sets an innovative precedent for water purification technology. And it’s a great example of how books can keep evolving for all sorts of unexpected uses. We also have a new article in Online Features Chapter 02 from Xaar, detailing how innovative Martens Brouwerij in Belgium is inkjetting directly onto PET beer bottles to deliver ‘on-the-fly’ customisation, using Agfa LED-cured inks and Xaar 1002 Inkjet Printheads.

With the European holiday season in full swing there are only 20 news articles for you to browse through this week, but they do include a number of quite stunning recent orders and installations starting with KBA on Monday and the most highly-specified and productive straight B1 press in the UK; several from Heidelberg UK including two highly-specified orders for Speedmaster XL 75s including one with a coater, and also for an XL 75 Anicolor with coater in the United States – the company’s second Anicolor press; IFS with Horizon; Scodix and SPGPrints. On Thursday, Heidelberg and Masterwork announced a successful start to their partnership in Europe with several notable successes.

You’ll find pre-show announcements for KBA at World Publishing Expo in Hamburg; for Labelexpo in Brussels from Goss International and GMG; for Watkiss at The Print Show at the NEC in Birmingham;  for KBA at Graph Expo in Chicago; and for Mimaki at both Viscom Paris and C!Print in Madrid.

On Thursday, Agfa led the headlines with its second quarter results with particularly encouraging news from Agfa Graphics, spurred by its inkjet successes during the first half of this year.

There are new software releases this week from Onyx Graphics and Enfocus. Recent new kit this week was highlighted by Ricoh, and on Friday, EFI announced its new scanning spectrophotometer to bring a high level of automation and integration to digital press colour management.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Labelexpo europe 2015

Graphic Repro On-line News from 24 August 2015

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Saturday 22 August, which this week examines the often tedious business of recyclability. There are also a couple of updates for FESPA Eurasia in our FESPA Newsroom, but no other feature articles this week, which has been rather slow to say the least, when it comes to news volume, or distinct lack of it, due to the European holiday season, to the point where it dried up completely on Friday.

I shall let you browse the news this week. You will find several mentions for Graph Expo in Chicago, one for FachPack in Nuremberg, several for Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, and one for IFRA India in Mumbai, all of which take place later next month, together with a selection of notable recent orders and installations, ending on Friday with Copy Express, one of the Cape’s fastest-growing full service print and copy shops, as it launches an ambitious Xerox-driven franchise expansion from its Bellville, Cape Town headquarters.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News | Review from 18 August 2015
By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 14 August, which this week examines the Maggi Noodles ‘contamination’ saga which began in Uttar Predesh, India. There’s also a new addition in Online Features Chapter 06, featuring PhotoBox, Europe’s leading personalised product company, as it optimises its canvas production division with an Esko Kongsberg digital cutting and finishing device, supported by Esko’s Automation Engine Workflow solutions; and in our drupa Newsroom, the third drupa expert article, this month from Sean Smyth, discussing inkjet printing.

Although the news was rather thin on the ground this past week with only 16 articles in total, it contains some very important announcements. Monday saw a new one-day event announced, set to take place in Manchester, UK on 3 December. The GlobalChannelPartners Summit 2015 describes itself as a new and unique networking opportunity for UK, European and Global players in the printing and packaging industries. We also have Epson at ITMA in Milan, Italy in November.

Tuesday and Wednesday saw the latest figures from both Koening & Bauer and Heidelberg, which always provide a true indication of how the industry has performed over the past three to six months, and perhaps more importantly, what can be expected for the remainder of the respective financial years from the world’s largest press manufacturers. You’ll find KBA’s half year results leading the news on Tuesday and Heidelberg with its first quarter results on Wednesday. If you combine these with last week Friday’s announcements (the links are still below) from Sappi, Kodak and Langley Holdings which includes Manroland Sheetfed, then they provide a much broader picture or guide, and there are some real positive signs.

On Thursday, Goss International took the lead with the first triple-wide Uniliner newspaper press in the United States, and reveals top results from the new technology at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as it invests heavily in the long-term viability of printed newspaper editions. Friday’s lead is also devoted to the future of newspapers, but this time with digitally printed editions for Guernsey and Jersey, as the Guiton Group, which owns the Jersey Evening Post, partners with Kodak to introduce Stream Inkjet technology to create a more flexible business model for the future of the newspaper industry in the Channel Islands. The company plans to produce eleven titles in total, including ten of the leading UK national newspapers which currently rely upon being flown to the islands each day for local distribution. Also on Friday, Manroland Web Systems announces intelligent ‘Imposer’: The first automated imposition solution for both digital and offset printing.

There’s a few more if you check them out carefully, including some nice installations successes from HP Indigo at Traffic Print Online Solutions in Germany, which has installed the 200th HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press. Then we have Heidelberg prepress, press and postpress at Keno Graphic Services; Heidelberg Stahlfolder at Grunwald, and KBA at Travel Bags Inc, all in North America.

The tailender goes to UPM as it opens an art exhibition by Chinese contemporary artist Wei Qingji on 14 August at Bioforum, UPM’s showroom at Biofore House Helsinki, as part of this year’s Helsinki Festival programme. The exhibition will remain open until 31 October.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 3 August 2015

By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 31 July, which this week takes a look at the growing number of Standards and Environmental Labels for Printers and Publishers. You will also find two additions in Online Features from the BPIF offering a PDF download of its latest flyer; and also announcing publication of the latest issue of Printing Outlook for Q3 2015. It ought to be in our News columns but unfortunately those are limited to one illustration and I wanted to be able to include two of the Charts from the publication, which can be ordered online by both members and non-members who want to follow and perhaps use its findings and forecasts.

Important news leaders this week came from Heidelberg’s Annual General Meeting for the financial year 2014/2015 on Monday; followed by UPM-Kymmene on Tuesday with its Interim Results for Q2 2015; and also Global Graphics with its half-year Report. Wednesday saw Ricoh South Africa moving to new premises in Kwa-Zulu Natal designed to enable a technological showcase of its entire range of services in the Province; while Printing Industries of America releases more information about the ten key innovations and technologies selected to receive the 2015 InterTech Technology Awards, with Heidelberg, Esko and X-Rite also making separate announcements relating to their Awards on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday InPrint announced that its new visitor brochure for the upcoming show, set to take place from 10 – 12 November in Munich, is now available.

On Friday, Goss International announced another change of ownership, as American Industrial Partners prepares to acquire Goss and its subsidiaries from Shanghai Electric Corporation. The agreement is said to form part of a broader strategy to further strengthen Goss’ position as a leading global web offset printing press supplier, as SEC refocuses on its core business. This week also saw Sawgrass Industrial join forces with Kiian Digital and J-Teck3 on Monday.

KBA, Heidelberg, Esko Kongsberg, Manroland Web Systems and GMG all announced recent sales and installation successes on Thursday and Friday ranging from North America to Spain, to the UK and Thailand.

Our Tailender in a week which saw only 23 news items selected goes to Two Sides on Wednesday, which reported an 88% success in its latest Anti-greenwash initiative, demonstrating the effectiveness of challenging misleading ‘paper-free is better for the environment’ claims.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News | 27 July 2015
by Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 24 July, which this week takes a peek at addressing climate change… I think, or has she perhaps developed a Gerald Scarfe type of obsession for HRH Prince Charles’ ears perhaps?  As the European holiday season and exodus really gets underway there are no Online Features or FESPA or Drupa News items this week… except from Kemtek in South Africa which drew attention to FESPA Africa on both Wednesday and Friday. The event took place in Johannesburg from Wednesday until Friday at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. There was also one show-related announcement from Nipson together with its distributor Inkjet Technology Solutions.

The week’s news has been rather thin on the ground, but we did receive EFI’s second quarter results to lead the news on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday we have Heidelberg with its preliminary figures for its first quarter of the current financial year. This was accompanied by Printing Industries of America, as it announces the ten winners of the 2015 InterTech Technology Awards to be presented during Graph Expo in Chicago in September.

The week saw the latest software releases from Esko and Agfa Graphics on Monday, while on Tuesday a new HP-tested UV varnish range was introduced by Flint. On Wednesday, Epson announced the launch of two new dye-sublimation printers for printing on a range of substrates to complete its range of dye-sub printers. The new SC-F7200 and SC-F6200 printers are capable of producing high-quality printed textiles, such as clothing, sportswear and home textiles, and also offer the flexibility needed to sublimate onto a range of hard substrates. On Friday Flint introduced a new metal-backed letterpress plate to its range.

Several really nice installations and sales successes this week came from Ricoh at X-Ide in Norway which has added four new C9110 digital presses; Gallus at RAKO Group which has installed two new Gallus ECS 340 presses; Xerox with Bytes at TCM in Pretoria with a new Versant 2100; Screen at ESAG in Portugal with a new large-format Truepress W3200UV HS flatbed press; Epson at Kili Arts also with large-format, a SureColor SC-F6000 dye-sub printer; Heidelberg UK at Thomson Print & Packaging with new Suprasetter CTP; while Heidelberg in Germany announced the new Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour perfector with energy-saving LE UV coating at Görres-Druckerei. A major Printservices project has been completed by Manroland Web at Fairfax Media Printing and Logistics to make newspaper production future proof in New Zealand; and Delta Print & Packaging in Belfast is set to enhance its production capabilities as it takes delivery of Speedmaster XL 145-6+L from Heidelbe rg UK. Last but not least, trade finisher A&M Ellis in the UK has added Horizon perfect binding from Intelligent Finishing Systems.

A tailender on an environmental note this week goes to UPM (Friday). In the recently released WWF UK Timber Scorecard, UPM was one of a small number of companies which received the highest score.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 20 July 2015
By Mike Hilton
graphicrepro.za@gmail.com

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 17 July, which looks at a totally European issue as the EU attempts to gather input for what a European circular economy might look like. In other words, one which ultimately would ‘transform Europe into a more competitive resource-efficient economy’. As Laurel points out, the printing industry is already highly sustainable, so does the circular economy matter? No Online Features this week, but we do have the latest from drupa 2016 and FESPA.

Monday’s headlines saw Labelexpo 2015 in Brussels take much of the news with Domino, GSE, Tresu and MPS; followed on Wednesday by Epson, and on Friday by Gallus and Sappi Europe with their plans for the late September show. On Tuesday, Sappi took the lead as it announced plans to sell its CapeKraft recycled packaging mill to Golden Era, following last week’s decision to sell its Enstra mill near Springs in Gauteng to Corruseal.

In Wednesday’s headlines, Goss International took the lead at Groupe Maury Imprimeur in Manchecourt, Franceas the company installs its tenth Goss Sunday press, a Sunday 3000. This was accompanied by the news that Dr. Gerold Linzbach, Heidelberg’s CEO who is currently away with an undisclosed illness will now only return to work later than initially anticipated. In the interim, CFO Dirk Kaliebe has been appointed to take on his duties and to chair the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting planned for 24 July in Mannheim. Remaining with Heidelberg, but this time in the UK, the company has agreed a sales partnership with Masterwork UK for its enhanced portfolio of  postpress and finishing products enabling Heidelberg to sell not only the Promatrix die-cutter and Diana X and Diana Smart folder gluers but also hybrid machines like the Duopress, inspection systems and more.

There is a whole mixed bag of news that I have not mentioned if you scroll down carefully, including KBA with the fourth Rapida 145 seven-colour large-format press at Walter G Anderson in the USA; and Manroland Web Systems at Baumann Druck in Kulmbach, part of the Mediengruppe Oberfranken, which has invested in InlineCutoff Control dynamic for both its Lithoman 40pp and 64pp press lines, which also includes a first to be installed on a Lithoman short-grain press.

The tailender goes to EFI on Friday, for its Graphitec 2015 Innovation Award for Software Solutions.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News from 06 July 2015

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 10 July, which this week asks If Interest in Carbon Footprinting is Stalled? You’ll also find a new report from KBA Sheetfed Solutions in Online Features, Chapter 06 as it follows ‘The Internet of Things’ in its digital business transformation’ for its Business Units. Most importantly, we have the announcement in our drupa Newsroom (in both English and German), outlining Messe Düsseldorf’s drupa director, Sabine Geldermann’s plans for next year’s drupa cube, with an innovative Conference Programme designed to bridge the gap between print professionals and their creative agency, marketing and brand owner clients across a variety of vertical markets.

This week’s news headlines began with UPM on Monday listing its latest eco credentials and achievements, followed by a selection of exhibitor announcements for this year’s Labelexpo in Brussels in late September, including Screen Europe, Esko and Chili Publish. Tuesday began with drupa mentioned above, followed by Sappi and Borregaard with their latest joint venture plans in South Africa. Wednesday saw Weiss Druck announce an order for a second 96-page Manroland Web Systems‘ Lithoman press, plus a comprehensive e-Retrofit of its Geoman press in Monschau, Germany; followed by Heidelberg with a se ries of digital successes from its digital printing portfolio based around the latest Linoprint CV/CP systems. On Thursday, Ricoh announced its further expansion into Eastern Europe; while on Friday, Xerox took the lead as it strives to make digital production colour market more colourful and profitable with the debut of its new faster iGen 5 with fifth colour option. Backtracking to Wednesday, EFI announced its latest Fiery Print Server platform which drives CMYK+ colour capabilities and faster processing for the new Xerox iGen 5.

There’s much more if you scroll down carefully, including Bobst’s announcement of its second beta site for its new digital press with Kodak Stream inkjet for corrugated board, at Schumacher Packaging in Ebersdorf, Germany on Wednesday; and Heidelberg UK’s latest Speedmaster successes at Optichrome in Woking, England, and at Gortreagh Printing in Ulster; also KBA making the headlines on Thursday at Meredith-Webb in the United States, as it prepares to install its fourth KBA press in five years, a Rapida 205 VLF press to access new opportunities.

Our tailender and congratulations this week go to Marc Lotter, who has been appointed as the new finance director of Heidelberg Graphic Systems Southern Africa in Johannesburg; and as many of you may know, Marc hails from one of South Africa’s well-known print families in Johannesburg.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News from 29 June 2015
By Mike Hilton
graphicrepro.za@gmail.com

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 26 June which looks at capturing rainwater as a source of environmental impact reduction and to benefit local communities.  There are also two additions to Online Features Chapter 06, as Heidelberg underlines its reorientation with the launch of a new brand identity to be adopted globally in the run-up to drupa 2016, which also led the news on Wednesday. Then we have Andreas Weber’s interview with Oliver Zünd which is also among Friday’s news headlines.

In Chapter 02 (Technology-related articles) you will find the very latest from Bobst as its ‘Competence 15 – Inspiring Business Solutions’ event drew close to 300 packaging experts from around the globe to the Bobst Competence Centre in Mex, Switzerland in June. This is followed by Heidelberg announcing the latest version of its Prinect Image Control with CIP4-PPF for both packaging and commercial printers – without the use of colour control strips, to enable materials savings which can be significant, so don’t skip it please. Finally we have the comprehensive report-back on KBA‘s LED-UV and traditional UV Conference held in Radebeul last month.

On Monday Two Sides took the lead with comment on its latest survey in the UK which posed the following thought provoking question: Reading from paper or reading from screens. What do consumers prefer? Tuesday saw EFI announce the launch of its latest Digital Front End for digital printing systems, to be available from Q3 this year. As mentioned above, Heidelberg took the lead on Wednesday with its new corporate brand update. On Thursday EFI actually took the two top spots yet again as it announced the acquisitions of both Reggiani Macchine in Italy for textiles injet printing; following by the acquisition of Matan Digital Printers product range and technology to boost its presence in superwide-format display graphics.

To round off the week on Friday, Manroland Web Systems‘ participation in the London Book Printing Forum took the lead as it continues to promote the value of its FormerLine in industrial scale digital book production. There were only 21 news articles selected this week as the European holiday season takes hold and incoming news has cooled off, unlike the weather, but you will find a nice cross section of news if you scroll down carefully.

As the tailender this week I felt I had to draw attention to Sappi‘s announcement on Thursday, with the sale of its Enstra Mill recycled containerboard and kraft papers business to Corruseal Group. For Sappi die-hards this must be quite a wrench, as it is here on a farm in Geduld near Springs in the then Eastern Transvaal in 1937, that the fledgling Sappi began life with the construction of its first mill named ‘Enstra’ (short for Enterprise Straw) for its early beginnings in the production of strawboard and later a range of kraft papers. We wish Corruseal every success with the ongoing business and future of the Entra Mill.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton
