Comment on #drupamc by Andreas Weber | German version available

Everyone did a super job at the drupa media conference (abbr: #drupamc) from February 29 to March 2, 2016: The Messe Dusseldorf, particularly the drupa2016 team; the 15 exhibitors with their presentations; AD Communications as the organising agency and last, but not least, the approximately 100 trade journalists in attendance from around the globe, with happily many newcomers among them. That’s a good thing. The branch is in need of some new momentum. And some new thinking, followed by the right doings. drupa 2016 supposedly stands for: Touch the future, the motto proclaimed by drupa director Sabine Geldermann. That’s great! — Still: Getting customers of print companies as crucial innovation decision-makers on board remains relatively unnoticed. In this respect: Print is making rapid technological advancements, but the industry itself is applying the brakes!

At a glance:

  • #drupamc was a big success.
  • HP wants to take over the leading role in print (but unfortunately, commits real communication blunders!).
  • Heideldruck is the secret star (thanks to partners Fujifilm and Ricoh).
  • Kodak appears to have gone “retro” and Xerox is struggling a bit despite new products.
  • Canon is the most convincing with #UnleashPrint.
  • Before drupa 2016 begins, there is a lot to do to iron out communication deficits, place focus on portraying the benefits (beyond technology) and to finally mobilise customers of print companies.

Indisputable: Optimism and confidence in the future are back (see also: 3rd drupa Insights Report). That was shown by the technology providers in almost all the presentations, particularly those of the “smaller” and highly specialised exhibitors such as Kolbus, Bobst, Hybrid, Global Graphics, Datalase and especially Pitney Bowes, a global player that will be a stranger to most drupa visitors (see summary of all company presentations in the ValuePublishing real-time reports on Storify).

#drupamc already promised to be very exciting in the run-up: Industry leader Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (Heideldruck) dashed ahead with its drupa slogan “Simply Smart” and a disruptive new strategy. Success in print is not primarily about the presses, but about new types of integrated solutions that live up to the digital age and the changes in media usage behaviour. New terms become correspondingly relevant: internet-of-things, Industry 4.0, cloud, big data, apps, automation, 3D, 4D, as well as customer centricity and others. And, of course, new technologies: at the core, cloud services as well as a new generation of industrial inkjet production systems (see Bernd Zipper’s analysis and evaluation on beyondprint.de).

Heideldruck did not give a presentation at #drupamc —they focussed on their own press conference beforehand, which can prove to be a clever move. Despite everything, Heidelberg was omnipresent. Particularly because Heideldruck partners such as Ricoh and Fujifilm referred explicitly to Heidelberg’s expertise as their main support. After all, with Heideldruck one leads in everything required for managing a printing business. This is precisely where HP and its Graphic Solution Business (GSB) wishes to be positioned in order to dethrone Heideldruck.  After relying on HP for “heavy metal” for almost 12 years, HT’s core competency as an IT company was pulled out of the hat at #drupamc: “PrintOS” is the magic word with which HP – now the exhibitor with the largest stand at drupa – hopes to win over print companies.

Will HP’s PrintOS be the turning point?

The announcement was full of promise: “HP Inc. inspires print providers to reinvent their possibilities at drupa 2016 with HP PrintOS, a cloud-based mobile platform that simplifies and automates print production management”. It is about “new advancements enabling print service providers to reinvent their possibilities”. HP big boss Rob Le Bras-Brown, Global Head of Print Marketing, said, “HP is bringing the full power of our vast portfolio (…) to drupa 2016. With today’s introduction of HP PrintOS and more pre-drupa announcements to come, HP is following through on its promise to ‘keep reinventing’. That means that we will be showing advancements across the various segments of the printing industry that will enable our customers to reinvent their possibilities.” And François Martin, HP GSB Worldwide Marketing Director, used some clever words to emphasise the fact that the print business is primarily about the perfect synchronisation of the analogue and digital worlds.

PrintOS Senior Manager at HP, Simon Lewis, delivered a convincing presentation. His voice almost cracked during the presentation, and especially during the questions from the trade journalists. The specs sound promising and according to HP are to include the following apps:

  1. Box, a tool that simplifies the onboarding of print jobs from non-automated sources such as e-mail and file transfer services. According to HP, a disproportionate amount of time and effort are often invested in handling jobs prior to production. Box standardises many processes, thereby reducing this overhead. Users thus have a tool in hand to increase capacity and improve profitability.
  2. Site Flow, a tool that combines automatic job submission, pre-press and shop floor management all in one. The app is suitable for print service providers in both the business-to-business and business-to-business-to-consumer sectors. Site Flow makes it possible for print service providers to offer their clients more attractive prices. Furthermore, it can help improve service and produce more easily hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of individual personalised print orders every day, including shipment to the end customers.

Users of HP Indigo and HP PageWide Web Press should be able to avail of PrintOS as of May 31, 2016; users of HP Latex and Scitex have to wait most likely until 2017. Many apps will be available free of charge to existing HP customers with a service contract. Certain apps will be subject to monthly user charges. — So much for the announcements that really sounded full of promise.

Interjection: You cannot not communicate!

Whoa! Are communication glitches at HP the exception? Or is HP still lacking a healthy mix of IT skills and willingness to communicate? — HP Inc. has put a lot of marketing effort into promoting its drupa innovations and particularly, the PrintOS to printing companies. The budget for the trade show presence is huge. But the impact is rather marred by a lack of multichannel communication talent. HP set up its own section on Flickr. As of March 12, 2016, the eight photos that had been posted had been called up only 16 times to date. In general, HP’s social media engagement seems half-hearted: It is present almost everywhere, without actually achieving any interaction. Views on YouTube of elaborately produced HP videos, for example, are probably mostly generated by its own staff. Google searches on HP topics are not easy.

Serious are the technical mistakes: The press release dated February 29, 2016, sent at 4:01pm by PR agency F&H Porter Novelli, Munich—words of praise on PrintOS providing a link that as of March 12, 2016, at 3:44pm, still led to nothing. “Oops. We can’t find that page for you” is bluntly displayed. EMBARRASSING. And it is not the first time that such a thing has happened on an HP website.

And last, but not least: Press queries that go beyond the content of the press releases often come up against a lack of understanding or are barely answered, as many colleagues from various countries have complained; if you do not know an HP GSB manager personally and/or have direct access, you are on your own.

Bottom line: If HP GSB wishes to make its aspiration of leadership in print credible, then it needs to communicate once and for all about its innovations in a professional, market-oriented and innovative way!

Another missed opportunity? — Describing the benefits for customers of print companies was not a topic!

What is truly important, however, gets short shrift: What benefits does HP give customers of print companies? Nothing was mentioned about that. And that, to me, seems criminal. Just zeroing in on the fact that print companies can do their work more easily and cheaply using PrintOS will hardly make print stronger in the communications mix. Precisely herein lies drupa 2016’s reason for being. Touch the future refers not only to printing companies that will spend billions on technology at drupa 2016 to be fit for the future. Rather ‘Touch the future’ is a message to all, who have to drive innovation in communication in order to do profitable business.

Apropos profit and growth: Whether intended or not, with PrintOS, HP is tremendously boosting the topic of e-business print and the online printing sector, which in Germany alone already brings in 2.5 billion in revenues annually (source: EPOS Study, https://www.epos-studie.de). This is important to realise since e-business print and online printing do not appear in the trade fair programme as primary, eminently important generic terms for the future of the printing industry.

Still: HP Inc. dared come out from under cover, which cannot be said of other top dogs such as Kodak or Xerox. The Kodak presentation was like stepping back into the 20th Century. Nothing innovative, just improvements of existing products and an affirmation that they continue to faithfully serve the analogue world of print. Similar to Xerox: New inkjet printing systems were presented. And at the same time the assurance was given that despite the company split announced in February 2016, everything would remain the same. Whoa! Is that good news or bad?

From a German point of view, Xerox has practically almost disappeared from the professional print market. It is only being kept alive by a couple of committed and competent business and computer companies. Viewed corporate-wide, it was only just 2 years ago that Xerox lost one-third of its sales in print technology. But the major impetus has to come from Xerox itself, for instance, by thinking beyond print and placing proprietary solutions such as XMPie better in the spotlight, since XMPIe perfectly closes the gap between print and online communication in multichannel scenarios.

Impressions of the #drupamc, incl. the new drupa music presented by EFI CEO Guy Gecht! Video animation: Andreas Weber.

All the more impressive was seeing how some of Xerox’s tough competitors such as Konica Minolta and Ricoh are excellently positioned. Likewise, Fujifilm and Epson, who made virtually modest presentations, offering a number of surprises for many colleagues in the trade. In addition to the Fujifilm/Heideldruck inkjet cooperation project “Primefire 106”, mention must be made of the Epson PaperLab, a compact machine for DIY recycled papermaking in DIN A4/A3 sizes. (Whereby the Epson PaperLab has been known about since the beginning of 2015 and was as such nothing new for #drupamc). Even EFI, the speciality vendor-turned-conglomerate, demonstrated the point more rousingly and far-sightedly than Xerox. In his famous, notoriously funny style of presentation, EFI CEO Guy Gecht used the Hollywood dream factory to enthusiastically demonstrate the future of print as a dynamic growth market. At the end, Guy Gecht presented a special version of Billy Joel’s song “We didn’t Start the Fire” with new lyrics he created for drupa and the global printing industry. MAGNIFICENT!

Mark Lawn and Peter Wolff, Canon Europe, explaining the new #UnleashPrint communications approach of the imaging corporation.

#UnleashPrint — Canon trumps and makes a lasting impression!

Canon led the way, making a brilliant appearance. The leading multinational imaging corporation delivered a convincing affirmation to print and to the market for professional printing at the industrial level. Those who had the opportunity to visit the Canon Expo in New York City, Paris, Shanghai or Tokyo in October 2015 would have been prepared. It was evident that Canon indeed has the widest range of applications: Canon is the only drupa exhibitor to cover all six drupa highlight themes: Print, Packaging, Green Printing, Functional Printing and 3D-Printing as well as Multichannel. That is important in this sense specifically for drupa 2016 and in general for the print industry, since Canon as a brand has the greatest charisma in B2B as well as in B2C!

Of course, Canon also showed innovative technologies, just like other exhibitors. But everything was in the context of solutions accessible to print companies and their customers alike, showing the respective, clear benefits. The Canon stand will reflect the areas of application, so that all visitors can easily find the solutions that are of most interest to them. Individually, those are:

  • commercial print
  • business communications, including transactional and direct mail
  • publishing, including books, magazines and newspapers
  • advertising and creative, including display graphics
  • functional/industrial, including 3D printing
  • packaging
  • photographic products

This is truly the full spectrum of what can satisfy current and future market demands! By its own admission, Canon relies on a combination of market-leading technologies, expertise and continuous dialogue with customers to help print service providers implement customer-centric business models that unleash the full potential of their business.

For this to be understood and communicated ubiquitously, Canon is the only exhibitor to date to employ new contemporary communications channels: As part of a multichannel communications campaign on relevant platforms, the hashtag #UnleashPrint is to address not only print service providers, but also innovation decision-makers, interested in print in the communications mix as well as the corresponding technologies and services.

Live-Video: Andreas Weber in a 1 min. interview with Canon’s Mark Lawn via iPad.

Mark Lawn of Canon Europe explained the unusual approach with #UnleashPrint as follows:  In every area of the stand, Canon will bring to life its new campaign to #UnleashPrint. This communicates Canon’s passion for print as a unique and powerful medium, celebrates the value of print and sets out to unlock its still untapped potential. Central to this is to show how the implementation of intelligent new business models can follow for realising the potential of print in the digital age to better fulfil constantly changing customer needs.

In its corresponding press release, Canon further says: “Every zone of the Canon stand will feature exceptional creative print applications, with the aim of inspiring visitors to extend their product portfolio and push the boundaries of print. As part of the customer journey through the endless variety of print, Canon will also show trade visitors how they can increase print’s effectiveness through integration with digital platforms to deliver seamless multichannel communications that simplify customer experiences, stimulate response and make print as measurable as any other tool in the communications mix.”

Print wins Analysis by Andreas Weber .001

Print wins, only if it stands the test in the communications mix!

That sums up what it is all about. And corresponds to our ValuePublishing analyses, made in the run-up to #drupamc, personally discussed with customers of print companies, agencies and publishing houses. (See the analysis “Print wins!” by Andreas Weber on slideshare.com)

The key messages derived from it carry forward the exciting results in the trade of the #drupamc and are as follows:

  1. The goal is attainable: Print wins! And considers itself to be the key pillar in all contemporary marketing and communications scenarios.
  2. For more than a thousand years, print has been one of the most important cultural tools globally for allowing innovations to become reality! Why should things be any different today?
  3. BUT: The market has changed radically! Instead of quantity, quality is increasingly in demand. The trend: Exploit added value through more attention to and greater efficacy of printed material in the communications mix!
  4. The dilemma: Everyone driving communications is searching for digital strategies to push content (unanimously) everywhere. Dealing with print innovations that lead to dialogue through interaction is often overlooked. Only multichannel can do that in combination with print! And that needs to be communicated better and more clearly via drupa 2016.
  5. Print will become the key pillar, thanks to completely new types of software and cloud solutions and e-business models, particularly in personalisation. It is no longer a question of reach, but of “one conversation”!
  6. Multichannel innovations that include print do not make analogue media superfluous, but integrate them seamlessly.
  7. Print sustainably increases business success through interaction, through dialogue with the audience (customers, partners, interested parties); supported by personal, timely relevance — through touchpoints covering the whole media spectrum from print to digital.
  8. Print teamed up with multichannel and e-business is a new, rapidly growing service sector. Focus: driving innovation forward! New print technologies such as inkjet are important, but “just” a means to the end.
  9. Everyone needs to learn what it’s all about: In communication, more reach is not the measure of all things, relevant dialogue and ongoing conversation are.
  10. It is proven that print wins and its importance is strengthened through the IoT, cloud, big data and multichannel services because it makes communication powerful, relevant and humane.

Summary

As I have said, it was an extremely successful and insightful #drupamc. But there is still a lot to do before drupa 2016 opens its doors on May 31, 2016. The tried-and-true motto, in my view: “Get rid of silo thinking! Touch the future now! Take the communication offensive!” — Exhibitor communication should not be just a blunt promotion of new technologies for printing companies, presented in the conventional print trade press. A lot more needs to happen using innovative communication, through social media, through mobile, in order to put the focus on the benefits. Only so can the business in general and especially the decision-makers involved in innovation projects in the industry, in trade, and in the brand-name companies be reached to show print in a new way that can be experienced and understood. Canon is the only exhibitor to date who convincingly shows how it should be done and thus sets the bar: #UnleashPrint!

Note: With our real-time reports on ValuePublishing, we were able to make #drupamc rated tops. In just 72 hours, we reached more than 750,000 viewers who were able to experience live what was happening in Dusseldorf through the short reports and commentary.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 19 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen 39 news items and articles go online since last Monday, with five new additions to our FESPA Newsroom led by Durst, as it plans to unveil its new water-based printing systems and UV automation for LFP and dye-sublimation areas of application in Amsterdam next month; and then five in our drupa Newsroom led by Muller Martini with plans to show finishing for variable data printing live at the upcoming major event at the end of May and early June in Düsseldorf. We also have Konica Minolta, Ryobi and MHI, or RMGTas it is now known, planning to debut its newly designed range of presses, including hybrid digital; Global Graphics and Hybrid Software; and lastly CGS, as it announces the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ with results to be shown at drupa.

In Online Features the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for the First Quarter of 2016 introduction is highlighted; while Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday of last week looks at the successful recycling of paper cups by James Cropper Paper in the United Kingdom.

The week’s news began on a positive note on Monday from Manroland Web Systems, as managing director Jörn Gossécomments on the company’s positive 2015 financial year, which saw both an increase in profit and a boost in the company’s market share.

A major subject this week is that of labels and labelling, where on Friday the International label association FINAT previews 2016, as the industry is constantly challenged to provide much more for brand owners and consumers. The world of labelling is unquestionably one of the most dynamic and innovative industry sectors today. Thomas Hagmaier, current president of FINAT and CEO of Hagmaier Etiketten in southern Germany, offers an informed summary of the current status in 2016: Says Hagmaier, ‘Delivering a fine piece of label design and print that sells the product on the retail shelf is still essential, but today our industry is challenged to provide so much more, for the brand owner and the consumer. To meet an ever-growing raft of brand owner demands, the label supply chain has to meet challenges posed not only by industry innovation, but also by new packaging and labelling choices, online retailing, incredible refinements in imaging technologies, the need fo r sustainable solutions and, of course, international regulations.’ Don’t miss the article!

Also on Friday, you will also find Domino with UV textures for labels; Rotoflex with new security label inspection options; and then MPS, Screen with its Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press, Mathom and AVT, all preparing to join Rotocon at ProPack Africa in March in Johannesburg. Then we had Xaar on Monday, with an expanded product range for UV, which is ideal for printing UV spot varnish for labels, packaging and graphics applications.

As for new sales and installations as the new year gets under way, we had Stroma on Monday with its latest digital purchase from Heidelberg UK . Thursday saw BCQ with EFI Vutek; and on Friday, we had Positive ID Labelling Systems in the UK, which is growing its digital print service offering with the company’s second EFI Jetrion label press – this time a Jetrion 4900 model. Cape Town’s original fabric label printing company, Julius Solomon Specialist Labels, has added Xerox speciality silver and gold dry inks for packaging and swing tickets; and lastly,  Liverpool, UK-based Rayross has invested in Duplo to offer PUR perfect binding to its own customers, as well as  as trade service to commercial printers, design agencies and more.

Exciting new kit this week was led by Duplo on Monday, as it unveiled its new iSaddle PRO Digital System targeted at near-line high-end saddle stitching production. Canon on Tuesday with new entry-level MFP printers; and on Wednesday, Stora Enso as it introduces a new CKB Carrier board grade to be shown at the NEC Birmingham at the Packaging Innovations show on 24 – 25 February 2016.

There’s much more if you scroll down carefully, including as this week’s tailender, the new alliance for South Africa’s DigitalView and Mellow Colour among Wednesday’s headlines. Mellow Colour’s founder and director, Alan Dresch, is already known to many in South Africa from his earlier days with Linotype, as well as more recently with Mellow Colour. DigitalView is also in the drupa Newsroom with CGS, announcing the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ which we mentioned earlier.

That’s about it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 05 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen 45 articles go online since last Monday, including new additions to our FESPA and drupa Newsrooms, and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog from last Monday.

Major announcements this week include Xerox poised to separate into two public companies in a major structural review in Monday’s headlines, along with its latest figures for Q4 and 2015. These were carried over from Saturday a week ago’s late additions, together with Andreas Weber’s take on the announcement. Tuesday’s headlines were led by UPM-Kymmene’s extremely positive Interim Report for Q4 and 2015.

Wednesday saw this week’s most impressive order for Screen highlighted, as Screen accelerates its expansion into the Chinese digital press market with an order for no less than eight Truepress Jet520HD high-speed inkjet presses; while Heidelberg UK announces the appointment of a new Finance Director, succeeding Roderich Kirschenlohr who has returned to Germany, but remains within the Heidelberg Group.

On Thursday Ricoh South Africa took the lead, as it announces that it has extended its South African marketing programme by including digital channels that feed an analytics system. The system includes digital content marketing that includes blogs, social media channels including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, automated e-mail newsletters, as well as an engagement tracking and escalation system linked to its customer relationship management (CRM) tool, with ties to the sales and marketing teams. Esti Kilian, newly appointed GM of marketing operations, explains more in the article below. Thursday also saw a new key appointment within UPM, as Winfried Schaur is appointed executive vice president responsible for UPM Paper in Europe and North America.

Friday saw drupa 2016 take the lead once more, as it announces its primary partner for development and delivery of innovative content for the drupa cube 2016, as international innovation firm The Medici Group, and its founder and CEO Frans Johansson, who are set to spur out-of-the-box thinking throughout the duration of the show.

Johansson caused somewhat of a furore with his 2004 book ‘The Medici Effect’, and since then has been ‘the’ go-to expert for the concepts of thinking and acting outside fixed limits and the “out-of-the-box principle”. Worldwide brands such as American Express, IBM, Nike, Volvo and The Walt Disney Company have already drawn on the strategic expertise of The Medici Group. Now drupa 2016 will do the same in drupa cube.

‘With The Medici Group, we have precisely the right partner at our side for drupa cube. A consistent approach to change management is absolutely necessary to master the challenges in the print, packaging and media sectors,’ said Sabine Geldermann, director of drupa, ‘and we are extremely pleased that we will be presenting a high quality and clearly structured programme that will appeal both to the print and media industry, as well as to web agencies, brands and print buyers, with The Medici Group and other impressive thought leaders at its core.’

More outstanding recent sales and installations this week include Imprimerie de l’Avesnois in France on Friday, as it commissions a Kodak Prosper 6000C high-speed inkjet line with FoldLine finishing from Manroland Web Systems. You’ll also find more this week from KBA in Japan and North America; CHILI Publish in North America; IFS with Horizon; and Edale in the UK, Heidelberg in the USA; and lastly from Fujifilm in the UK with more inkjet.

New kit this week is led by Canon on Tuesday, as it announced the global launch of the new Océ Arizona 1200 Series of UV flatbed printers. Also on Tuesday, System Brunner’s Instrument Flight colour control software with KBA Inline QualiTronic Color Control. On Thursday KBA also returned with its new TouchTronic user interface.

A tailender for you this week from FINAT on Thursday, as it lists its key labelling community activity events for 2016, comprising ts Labelling Competition, Technical Seminars, Webinars Series’, Young Managers Congress, European Label Forum, and much more.

There’s a lot more for you to explore below if you scroll down carefully.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

With my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Saturday 30 January 2016
Welcome to another busy week of news highlights which has seen no less than 64 articles go online since last Monday, including new additions to our FESPA and drupa Newsrooms and Online Features for 2016. You will also find the latest drupa Expert Article No 7 by Sophie Matthews-Paul, addressing large- and wide-format inkjet.

Once again I will only highlight the odd article as there are just too many and the whole update would become too cumbersome to wade through. Please scroll through them carefully, as there are so many really good articles, and many important announcements, as well as numerous excellent recent orders and installations: led by Manroland Web Systems on Monday for another new Lithoman web – this time for North America; followed on Wednesday by a very large sheetfed order for Heidelberg in Sweden. There are so many more to check out this week, from MPS, Screen, KBA, Heidelberg in the USA and UK; from both Manroland Web and Manroland Sheetfed; IFS with Horizon successes; Xeikon, Asahi, Technotrans with Komoris; Fujifilm inkjet and also Fujifilm with workflow, Bobst with a couple of world firsts, and lastly for Muller Martini in North America with no less than six Sigmaline systems.

You will also find new kit and new consumables announcements this week from Rotoflex, Ricoh, Meech with Xeikon; Onyx for Epson; Hybrid Software, and lastly from Flint Group with a new lightweight sleeve for flexo.

On Thursday, EFI announced excellent results for its fourth quarter and year ended 31 December, 2015; and then came back on Friday with its latest move in China; and also with a special report out of Connect 2016, where EFI revealed its clear and focused picture of the future of printing, and how it plans to respond to market changes.

On Saturday as a late addition, Xerox took the headlines with its Fourth Quarter and 2015 earnings… plus a surprise announcement following a comprehensive structural review, that the Company is to separate into two Public Companies by the end of 2016. You’ll also find Andreas Weber’s take on the planned split.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 January 2016

A Happy New Year to all our readers and followers, subscribers and sponsors. Despite the challenges, I sincerely hope 2016 will turn out to be a good one for all of us as we approach drupa in Düsseldorf at the end of May, preceded by FESPA Digital in Amsterdam in March.

Welcome to news highlights for the last few days or so in 2015, and then for the New Year, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs for the first three weeks of 2016. You will also find the very latest in our FESPA Newsroom for the upcoming FESPA Digital and its associated events in Amsterdam in March, as well as the very latest FESPA corporate news for the Southern European Print Congress in Italy in April. You may also take note that the deadline for this year’s FESPA Awards has now been extended until 15 February.

The latest also appears in our drupa Newsroom from visitors and the organisers, together with the most recent Expert Article No 6 by Ron Gilboa, director of InfoTrends’ Production & Industrial Printing Advisory Service. Please don’t miss them as drupa 2016 is just asround the corner.

I won’t highlight the news this week as there are a lot you can browse through yourself. Just don’t miss EFI and Xaar appointments, and also those from KBAIFS, and Heidelberg and Gallus in the UK. Gerold Linzbach is also back at work as CEO of Heidelberg. You’ll find some stunning sales and installations, including web presses from KBA and Manroland Web Systems, and several important pieces of new kit, too… especially from KAMA and Duplo, and Epson with a new range of wide-format inkjet presses.

Newsmaker of the year thus far and as my tailender, goes to UPM Kymmene for its various environmental awards and accolades. Our sincere congratulations to everyone involved.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Mike Hilton

ValuePublishing Teil 3 Facts Figures Zielgruppen Reichweite UPDATE ENG.002

“The unique thing about ValuePublishing: We know how to set up multichannel specialist communication in an innovative, smart, sustainable and highly effective manner!”

Mainz/Vienna, at the start of 2016

Information on what is currently the most innovative B2B multichannel communication solution

Back in 2015, exciting approaches were revealed for us all in discussions with numerous experts and the drupa team at Messe Düsseldorf. The focus: The variety and complexity of the new solutions in the print and paper sector is growing with huge dynamism. Thanks to Industry 4.0 (cyber-physical systems or integrated automation) and the Internet of Things, the current drivers of digitisation, all business and communications processes are being revolutionised at the same time, with the number of challenges growing explosively.

The drupa slogan “Touch the Future” and an ambitious drupa exhibition programme reflect the unheard-of extremely high pace with which astounding changes are taking place. Our current ValuePublishing stories on Heidelberg’s print and paper strategy “Simply Smart” demonstrate in an impressive manner how one can respond to current developments.

  • So the good news about drupa 2016 is: From an expert’s perspective, the print and paper sector is taking on a pioneering role in the digital transformation.
  • The not so good news: The plethora of innovations that are to be seen at this leading exhibition from 31 May 2016 onwards and hence the wealth of information are difficult to take in. At least with the opportunities that we have made use of to date.
  • The solution in our view: Innovative technologies and solutions must also be communicated in a consistently innovative way! In real time. Through multimedia. In a market, customer and demand-orientated manner.

ValuePublishing Teil 3 Facts Figures Zielgruppen Reichweite UPDATE ENG.005

“Innovative technologies and solutions must also be communicated in a consistently innovative way! In real time. Through multimedia. In a market, customer and demand-orientated manner.”

Value Blog dialog: As Harald Weimer sees it, networking and integration make print a top smart, automated communication solution

By Andreas Weber

(German Version available)

As reported in the Value Blog and via ValuePublishing social media accounts, and based on my expert analysis, the promising new approach of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heideldruck for short) aims to use the leading trade show drupa 2016 as a globally innovative platform to provide the printing industry worldwide with a sneak preview of visions that are within grasp. The motto “Simply Smart” is intended to lead us into the new world of “Heideldruck 4.0”.

Consequently, following the year-end press conference on December 1 and 2, 2015, I was keen to put some in-depth questions to Heideldruck board member Harald Weimer. The senior manager is responsible for the growth area of Heidelberg Services, which covers the Group’s full service and solution portfolio and appears to be undergoing targeted, market-oriented expansion.

He adopted an open, confident and forward-looking approach to his first Value Blog dialog. And he established a completely new context for the print media business by stressing the need for us all to understand that digitization presents not disadvantages, but a great many opportunities that should be grabbed courageously and dynamically! – The new credo (in my own words): Digitization will become part of the DNA of a post-Gutenberg era in which integration and networking will make print a 21st century pioneer ensuring the success of automated communication solutions.

Key statements by Harald Weimer

  1. The print media industry remains strong and its core business is stable, with global annual sales of over €400 billion.
  2. The proportion of sales accounted for by personalized print products is enjoying dynamic growth and is based on standardized processes for industrial print applications.
  3. Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT), including big data, are part of our DNA.
  4. Changes, in particular disruptive ones, are nothing new. Adapting to such changes has long been an everyday task.
  5. The print media industry is on a par with other innovation-driven sectors of industry and has no need to hide its light under a bushel.
  6. In the print media business, digitization does not simply mean offering Internet solutions or digital printing.
  7. Print will become part of a world of smart communication.
  8. Our new strategy therefore incorporates the promise “More than Machines” and the credo “Listen. Inspire. Deliver.” to firmly establish a new sense of values among our staff.
  9. The interaction between machine, process, and man needs to be redefined and offers significant potential.
  10. Simply Smart – our team of partners achieves real innovations by thinking from the perspective of the end customer.
  11. Due to 4D printing, there is an increasing focus on the way innovative print applications relate to digital lifestyle products.
  12. Personalization is part and parcel of digitization and will continue to gather pace thanks to Industry 4.0/IoT. This means automated print applications are no longer created via conventional purchasing channels but rather as part of multi-channel scenarios.

Value Blog dialog: Q & A

You see excellent growth prospects for the medium of print in the digital age. What do you consider to be the most important aspects of sustainable success in the print media business?

Harald Weimer: First something that many people don’t realize: The print media industry remains strong and its core business is stable, with global annual sales of over €400 billion. Growth is being driven by the packaging segment and, in terms of process technologies, by digital printing. Both are helping to produce a dynamic industry in which offset printing remains extremely important. Successful print shops are further improving their efficiency to ensure they are as fast and flexible as possible and can respond to new requirements associated with globalization. The proportion of sales accounted for by personalized print products is enjoying dynamic growth and is based on standardized processes for industrial print applications. This goes hand in hand with the digitization of business models and the entire supply chain so as to firmly establish a wider range of services with customers and suppliers. Our integrated approach including things such as the smart print shop and smart services is supporting these developments because it enables us to implement the principle of Industry 4.0 with our customers and at our own company.

In other words, the print media industry, including its supplier Heideldruck, is already very well placed in the digital transformation?

Harald Weimer: Yes, because the key prerequisites are in place and will undergo targeted expansion. Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT), including big data, are part of our DNA.

That’s a surprising statement given the constant moans about the Internet, in particular in Germany, and the print media industry’s very conservative view of the future. Many people still think the Internet is the enemy of print media…

Harald Weimer: I’d like to speak out in support of the many print businesses and our customers. Changes, in particular disruptive ones, are nothing new. Adapting to such changes has long been an everyday task. At the same time, past experience has taught us to how to draw strength and new courage. Most of our customers have made the transition from small-scale to industrialized printing. The question is not whether, but how. Starting with automated production processes, including the long-established JDF (Job Description Format), all the way through to web-based benchmark functions from the cloud and real-time data from the presses, our solutions have long met the criteria of the Internet of Things. The print media industry is on a par with other innovation-driven sectors of industry and has no need to hide its light under a bushel.

Doubters and critics always say that digitization will make things even more complex from the perspective of many print shops. And this also means more people are skeptical about whether the whole thing is manageable. How would you respond to this?

Harald Weimer: Digitization offers huge opportunities for the print media sector, but no disadvantages. Integration, including the networking of production processes, reduces complexity…

Can you give an example?

Harald Weimer: There are already print shops that are expanding their digital customer-to-customer relations along the entire value-added and supply chain based on industry standards and automation. Customers and the market are rewarding these efforts with double-digit growth rates.

[Editorial comment: Is this a coincidence or not? At almost exactly the same time as my Value Blog dialog with Harald Weimar, German news broadcaster N24 widely published the latest test results on December 16, 2015. See: “Online-Druckereien im Test – Sehr gute Qualität, stark unterschiedliche Preise” (Online print shops put to the test – excellent quality, wide range of prices).]

What does that mean?

Harald Weimer: In my opinion, it’s vital to make a distinction. In the print media business, digitization does not simply mean offering Internet solutions or digital printing. The necessary intelligence lies in the workflow as a whole, in the smart, seamless configuration of entire processes to best meet customer requirements. This enables innovations to be offered that can undergo further development working in a team with print shop customers. It helps us all a great deal if we use the terminology correctly and more clearly.

What role does Heideldruck play in these wide-ranging scenarios? Do you want to and are you able to offer everything from a single source?

Harald Weimer: We see ourselves as a solution partner and an integrator, combining our own modular solutions with those of relevant partners and enabling them to be used as a networked, customized package solution. Partners are and will continue to be very important to us in quickly getting solutions onto the market. We’re no longer simply looking to optimize the quality of print images but are aiming to provide appropriate, future-proof solutions for creating and making available tailored print products.

That represents a watershed or a turnaround at Heideldruck, but it won’t happen overnight, will it?

Harald Weimer: We’re currently talking in terms of the roadmap to drupa 2016. This represents a kind of proving ground for us to gradually complete the things I’m talking about. As I’ve said, the vital thing is to use digitization to reduce complexity. As you correctly predicted some years ago in your white paper on this subject, print will become part of a world of smart communication.

Thank you for mentioning the white paper. I still consider it to be important. How do you see the relationship between print and what I’ve referred to as smart communication?

Harald Weimer: Today’s communication solutions incorporating print must be both flexible and intuitive. So far, Heidelberg has used its Prinect workflow technology for this purpose. End customers determine freely and without any obligation how they want to have something produced – whether using offset printing or the myriad of digital printing processes we offer. We’re now making significant further progress through smart collaboration. We no longer simply offer products in the form of presses. In the future, customers will also obtain a detailed online overview of how their machines are performing. This will create a new sales platform for software, services, and consumables. It’s down to smart, integrated solutions to make our customers and their customers more successful.

In other words, you’re completely redefining the role of print and thus that of Heideldruck?

Harald Weimer: A number of aspects that represent a continuation of what we started at drupa 2012 need to be explicitly mentioned here. Benchmarking creates transparency for our customers by enabling them to use an app to find out online how they’re doing and where room for improvement exists. We’re taking our service performance solutions to the next stage so that customers can also offer their own customers something similar, for example through the Prinect portal or the Prinect web shop. This will create new e-commerce platforms for processing transactions differently in the future and offers our customers completely new ways of accessing both us and our partners.

E-business will thus play a far more important role extending beyond web-to-print applications and conventional sales options, then?

Harald Weimer: To coincide with drupa, we’ll be offering digital platforms that will make our extended services easy to find and use. This includes being able to find one’s peers, but also specific recommendations and assistance. We’re already practicing this approach, but in the future it will take on an entirely new, digitally extended dimension that does not come at the expense of personal relationships.

That sounds like what has recently been referred to as customer centricity and brings about a change in culture characterized by a high level of interaction. How do you plan to tackle this?

Harald Weimer: We’re starting with the company itself. Presses have been in our DNA for generations, as reflected by our company name, which includes the German world for presses – Druckmaschinen. Our new strategy therefore incorporates the promise “More than Machines” and the credo “Listen. Inspire. Deliver.” to firmly establish a new sense of values among our staff. It describes what is required to enable interlinking. The interaction between machine, process, and man needs to be redefined and offers significant potential. This plays a key role in all our internal communication measures.

What impact does the transformation process within Heideldruck have on your customer and market communication?

Harald Weimer: Our drupa motto “Simply Smart” summarizes the external aspects. Digitization is driven by the market. We must make sure we offer appropriate and relevant solutions. To do so we need to incorporate our customers’ communication with their own customers in a new way, for example by providing new support tools. We will use real-life scenarios for this purpose at the leading print media trade show drupa 2016.

In other words, the focus will be on applications in your extended customer-customer communication?

Harald Weimer: The solution presented at the December press conference at the mymuesli shop in Heidelberg shows the way forward. The focus was not on our 4D press, but on the possibility of mymuesli customers designing their own muesli packaging in the shop on an iPad and printing it on our Jetmaster Dimension inkjet press. Our team of partners achieves real innovations by thinking from the perspective of the end customer.

The mymuesli.com startup company isn’t a typical Heideldruck customer, though. Are you intending to do more of this as part of your innovative approach?

Harald Weimer: Our strategy includes leveraging additional market opportunities. We need to take this step to strengthen print, and online print shops are already using 4D printing solutions from us. We differentiate between solutions in the narrower sense of the word for print businesses and those in the broader sense for communicators, for example at the point of sale.

What new ideas are having the biggest impact?

Harald Weimer: We’re currently looking at a great many approaches based on the dynamic growth in demand for personalized products. Due to 4D printing, there is an increasing focus on the way innovative print applications relate to digital lifestyle products.

Last but not least, will Industry 4.0, that is to say the professional aspect of IoT applications, change the way print jobs are produced?

Harald Weimer: Personalization is part and parcel of digitization and will continue to gather pace thanks to Industry 4.0/IoT. This means automated print applications are no longer created via conventional purchasing channels but rather as part of multi-channel scenarios. Our solutions must factor in all these new aspects, so it’s well worth people from all kinds of sectors visiting us at drupa 2016.

Many thanks for participating in this Value Blog dialog!

Value Blog Dialog: Harald Weimer sieht Print durch Vernetzung und Integration an der Spitze automatisierter, smarter Kommunikationslösungen.

Von Andreas Weber

(English Version available)

Dezember 2015 vertiefende Fragen an Heideldruck-Vorstand Harald Weimer stellen.

  7. Print wird Teil einer Welt der „Smart Communication“ werden.
  8. Unsere neue Strategie beinhaltet daher das Versprechen „More than Machines“ sowie das Credo „Listen. Inspire.

Welche Rolle spielt Heideldruck in diesen umfassenden Szenarien?

Inspire.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review 21 December 2015
Welcome to another week of news highlights and the last of my e-News updates for 2015, and to Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for last Friday 18 December, which includes a brief overview of COP21 in Paris, which ended on an unexpected high and hailed internationally as a resounding success. Laurel has come up with some specifics on how printers might support the COP21 agreement. Whatever we do in the graphics industry must be easily achievable for small businesses, so there are some simple ideas for what printers and publishers, large and small, might do in Laurel’s popular Blog this week.

We’ve got some really good articles this week among the totally mixed bag of 25 news items, as well as pre-drupa 2016 announcements from exhibitors in our drupa Newsroom, including Muller Martini, Bobst, DG Press, Heidelberg and Ricoh; and then in our FESPA Newsroom from both FESPA and exhibitors at next year’s Digital show set to take place in March in Amsterdam, where Ricoh will debut for the first time and Screen Europe will use the show to unveil further developments to its Truepress Jet 3200UV flatbed printer ahead of drupa.

Among this week’s top headlines: Timson is back partnered with Kolbus (Monday); Golden Era South Africa took best in show at the FTASA wards this year (Tuesday) and also Syreline Process with a gold (Thursday). On Tuesday IFS as it announced a tremendous boost in its sales and figures for 2015. Wednesday saw the UK’s first ThermoFlexX 80-D digital flexo plate imager is now in full production;

The big news of the week came on Friday from Komori Europe, when it revealed what many have been waiting for ahead of drupa 2016 at the end of May and early June: Komori’s Digital LED-UV Inkjet Impremia IS29 Sheetfed Printing System will arrive at Komori Europe’s recently refurbished Graphics Centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands in January. Following print testing and a February open house, the press will be available for individual customer demonstrations and print tests, much to Kemtek Print Solutions‘ delight for potential South African customers. Also on Friday, Heidelberg UK will take over Gallus sales and support in the UK from April, prior to drupa 2016.

Throughout the week you will find a number of recent sales and installations successes, including a number of nice firsts. These were led by Ricoh and CFI Technologies on Tuesday with the Ricoh Pro VC60000 continuous feed production inkjet press, where the investment is expected to be the cornerstone of CFI’s production future.enabling transfer from offset to digital for personalised magazine covers, direct mail and more. On a smaller scale, Zebrahouse Design and Print has purchased a Linoprint CV from Heidelberg UK. Wednesday saw POLAR at Brogle Druck in Gipf-Oberfrick with the first Digicut independent production system in Switzerland; while Friday ended on a high for Ricoh as leading Service and Print Group Haberbeck in Ostwestfalen Lippe, Germany has made a strategically significant investment in a Ricoh Pro VC60000 to extend its digital print infrastructure.

The tailender serves to remind you that the Festive Season and Christmas is now upon us, with major holiday season closures, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, so there will only be no more e-News updates before mid-January, when the industry should once again be under way following all the various celebrations interruptions and closures. Any key news items which may arrive during this period will still be added to the Home Page news column if appropriate.

All that remains if for me to wish you Seasons’ Greetings wherever you are, a very Happy Christmas and and a Happy, Healthy and successful New Year in 2016. Do take care on the roads, we need you back safe and sound for drupa in Düsseldorf at the end of May and early June.

My best wishes, best regards and sincere thanks for your support throughout 2015.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 14 December 2015
Welcome to another week of news highlights and to Online Features where we have a super little article from ‘mymuesli’ in Passau, Germany lauding the opportunities that Heideberg’s 4D digital inkjet press has provided this rather unique startup company. We have Bobst‘s 125th Anniversary plans, and then HP and KBA with the world’s most productive inkjet web press. You’ll find the latest from drupa 2016, with the second Global Insights Report (in the drupa Newsroom) and from FESPA with Printeriors, the interior design showcase and dedicated conference, which will present a new concept for 2016 dubbed ‘The Print Hotel’, as the show returns to Amsterdam in March.

Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for last Friday, 11 December, includes mention of COP21 in Paris and ends with a caution that the graphics industry needs its associations to keep their members informed and aware, of where the green debate is heading and about how to participate in the conversation.

The news headlines this week contain some really important developments, not least of which appeared on Monday to begin the week on a high note, as HP and KBA debuted the world’s first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S to a couple of hundred key international packaging printers at KBA’s headquarters in Würzburg over a two-day event. This press also features in Friday’s leader to round-off the week, as DS Smith Packaging confirms that it has chosen to become the first packaging specialist to install the world’s first T1100S 2.8 metre wide inkjet web press from HP and KBA, in a sector where digital printing is the fastest growing segment in packaging, with a projected annual growth rate of 17 per cent in a market expected to be worth $19 billion by 2019.

Sappi led the news on Tuesday as it highlighted RLC Packaging and its recent success in the 2015 Red Dot Design Awards, using Sappi’s bright white carton material Algro Design for an exclusive hosiery and shapewear brand range packaging designed by Leo Burnett. You will also find a couple of other Awards mentions: from KBA on Tuesday; then EFI which is one of eight businesses to be honoured this year with the prestigious American Chamber of Commerce in Italy Award. Then we have Xeikon on Wednesday, as Dubai customer Kimoha celebrates a first as digital gains narrow web sector recognition at the recently held 35th FINAT Label Awards.

On Wednesday Heidelberg leads with the first of its drupa 2016 announcements, and reveals that it will exhibit the digitised future of the print media industry under the motto ‘Simply Smart’ and the biggest event in 2016; and then on Thursday it follows through with the second announcement on its plans to showcase ‘Smart Integration”, described as the next stage in automated print media production at next year’s event.

Although there are only 25 news articles again this week, you will find several really good and important announcements if you work your way through them carefully, including the Xaar Plc on Friday, as it reveals that Chris Morgan, the former key and very senior HP executive with a strong background in global marketing and general management and impressive track record, is to join the Xaar Board from January 2016. As with CEO Doug Edwards, Chris should be a great addition who is set to make his mark in Xaar’s future and the world of inkjet.

The tailender serves to remind you that the Festive Season and Christmas is drawing ever-closer and the major holiday season closures and exodus in the Southern Hemisphere, so there will only be one more e-News update before I also take a well-earned break until mid-January, when the industry should once again be under way following all the various interruptions and closures. If you are closing and disappearing during the week ahead, then I wish you Seasons’ Greetings wherever you are, and a very Happy Christmas and Happy New Year in 2016.

That’s it until next week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
