#HID19 Flashback.001

Flashback: #HID19 — Alphorn concert organized by Stefan Hunkeler outside the trade show halls at the main entrance of Messe Luzern

By Andreas Weber, Head of Value

#Lucerne #HID23: Where is the beef? — Unfortunately, I was not able to participate this time. So I’m wondering, after observing from the outside via LinkedIn, what could actually be outstanding about the Hunkeler AG Innovation Days 2023. There are very relatively few entries under the hashtag #HID23, most of them from Canon EMEA employees announcing improved products.

Overall, it is usually only referred to that the event took place and was great. It is also emphasized that the who’s who of the industry was there. But is it enough if the industry was just among itself again?

Where is the presentation of the benefits of new digital printing technologies for the customers of the print service providers and the users of print media? That is what is important in order to slow down further deterioration. Isn’t it?

If you compare what happened shortly before at the #MWC2023 Mobile World Congress Barcelona, you will understand what I mean: The focus is not on the exhibitors’ and organizers’ own message, but rather on what benefits come from innovation and have a lasting effect.

Last but not least: my post on LinkedIn created good feedback and insights I want to share with you.

INKISH VIDEOS

MY POV as a conclusion

Anyone interested in detailed news from selected exhibitors should watch the INKISH videos by Morten B. Reitoft and his team. From my point of view the most important:

For print experts, the Hunkeler Innovation Days 2023 offered a perfect platform for comprehensive orientation and a solid position determination – i.e. not only for the purchase of new production equipment.

Without a doubt, Hunkeler AG as the initiator and organizer has once again achieved great things! And more than clearly compensated for what was missed by the ineffective virtual.drupa in spring 2021.

After the forced break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there was great joy to be able to meet again within the industry and great colleagues from around the world.

There were no breathtaking or unexpectedly surprising innovations, but numerous good improvements, especially in software solutions (workflow, automation, etc.).

There were (repeatedly) no effective messages for customers of printing companies and media professionals that focus on the benefits of technological innovations for strengthening print in the media mix.

Feedback on my blog post via LinkedIn (March 7th, 2023)

An industry expert:

”I agree that the MobileWorldCongress does a great job in promoting a certain theme instead of products / vendors. I will share your feedback with the Ricoh team when we’ll do our event debrief next week.“

”… this year’s main topic of the #HID23 was ’next level automation’. I agree with you that most vendors mainly posted about their new products & solutions…“

A leading advisor & knowledge worker from LATAM:

”Good and constructive observation. This industry must look outside. The world is changing ver very fast. We are part of it but we must emphasize the solutions we offer.“

A leading & visionary print shop CEO based in NL:

”I was surprised by the quality of the Canon Inkjet sheet fed. Really good.  Besides that lovely talks about Ricoh Z75 and overall the positive atmosphere. People were happy to be in real contact after COVID.  Overall good. And you know I am not into high speed roll systems. But a good show where I learned a lot.“

#xug17orlando Review via Storify

Even after the conference was over #xug17orlando was still a topic on Social Media. And is still going strong around the Globe!

By Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Read as well the case study as making-off!

Sorry to say: But #xug17orlando was the best conference I had the pleasure to join in the last years. It was all about my #influenceB2B topics to figure out how to contribute in a very smart and very effective way to the needs for the digital age. And how to master successfully the sustainable transformation journey.

To get anything at a glance we published all relevant insights via Storify. So you will find a comprehensive overview by text, photos and short movies. Very happy that so many qualified and beloved contributors show up as well.

A super high-light for all of us at #xug17orlando: The presentation by Mark Schaefer, the leading brain for marketing advice who talked in a tailored presentation “From Massmarketing to Masscustomization“. Outstanding. He was one of the great experts giving an interview in that series of ‘silly talks’ I did as a video live report we shared with conference attendees. He hit the point. My favorite quote: “The secret of people to succeed: You just need more of yourself at your best!”

It’s all about having great conversation!

Amazing success: #xug172017 wasn‘t just a best-in-class conference on #multichannel #print #transformation. — Via #Socialmedia it became a BLOCKBUSTER attracting experts around the globe. So far (10/29 to 11/04) we got a total reach on #Twitter of more than 1.2 Million and on #LinkedIn of more than 110k via my own accounts. Can‘t wait to see the stats by others who contributed as well like XUG – The XMPie Users Group Inc. , XMPie, Christian Kopocz, Jeroen van Druenen and others. Additional effects were created by Mark Schaefer and Mandy Edwards as leading Social Minds giving presentations and sharing our Tweets. — My #influenceB2B Programme works!

IMG_4262 (1)

The best of the best!

Side kick of #xug17orlando: To get in touch with the best entrepreneurs, like Luis Romo from Mexico. Luis joined because he became currently the latest XMPie customer. XMPie president Jacob Aizikowitz describes Luis like this: “Luis Romo knows a lot about how Print fits in modern business directions. His catalog business is an envy, and it seems to me that his new initiatives are going to be ground breaking. Having XMPie SW at the hands of a team lead by Romo is not only an honor but also a challenge and an opportunity — for him and for us @XMPie. Many of the XMPie customers transformed their businesses, expanding their horizon and refining their business focus; they all learned how to leverage the #DigitalDisruption to their advantage. They are the group that charts the #transformation path for the print industry. Many of them saw the light and the direction, much before any research or industry analysts suggested that this is the direction to take.”

The most interesting #conversation with @Adobe we had so far. #xug17orlando made it happened. It‘s all about the #conversation of #marketing and #creatives. And: #transformation #AI #multichannel #innovation — TX to @prindoz for recording @zeitenwende007‘s #sillytalk.

Special thanks to Jeroen van Druenen and Christian Kopocz from the Board of the xmpieusersgroup for their great work. Very well done.

Value Blogpost ABTG Interview Tiago Keese.001

Interview by Tiago Keese, Journalist, São Paulo, Brazil

Andreas Weber, Head of Value, talks about his POV and his keynote presentation at The Congresso Internacional de Tecnologia Gráfica hosted by ABTG on 24 August 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil.

Note: Click to access the interview in português language.

At a glance

  • Nevertheless, even today printing technology is driving the transformation of our lives, our business world, our society.
  • Print technology is a main driver of innovation and transformation.
  • The Internet/Social Media and print are best friends. And Internet technologies profited from printing technology inventions
  • Some of my favorite print application innovations got developed by Internet and Social Media savvys.
  • In the digital age you have to re-position yourself, your business idea and your production capabilities in the right way to be a valuable transformation partner.
  • From a holistic point of view printers could become transformers if they are able to convert the outcome and benefit of new technologies into valuable customer solutions to fulfill needs.
  • Innovative printing companies need to transform their production business into a sustainable and future oriented marketing solution provider business to hit market and customer needs.

01 ABTG Congresso Keynote Andreas Weber

  • What is the importance of a meeting to discuss technology and innovation such as the International Congress of Graphic Technology?

Andreas Weber: The Congress Internacional de Tecnologia Gráfica hosted by ABTG will have a great impact on the whole industry and its customers. It is important to bundle different visions, opinions and talents to master the change and to get ready for transformation. To meet in person enables to reach the best network effects you can get. I am proud to be part of a best-in-class speaker team! It will be my pleasure and honor to blog about it to share all those upcoming news from Brazil with my global network.

  • Is it possible to affirm that the graphic arts industry has been evolving technologically, being attentive to the great technological innovations of society?

Andreas Weber: Since Gutenberg’s invention and that means since more than 600 years graphic arts is always right at the cutting edge of technology innovation to support our society, economy and culture. And even today printing technology is nevertheless driving the transformation of our lives, our business world, our society. All the leading innovators from Silicon Valley admire the spirit of Gutenberg. Even a current book is dedicated to „Gutenberg the Geek“ to showcase his spirit to innovate our communication technologies and to transform the world. (See my research results and comment: „Print is dead? Long live print!“).

  • Is the internet an ally of printing?

Andreas Weber: The Internet and print are best friends. And Internet technologies profited from printing technology inventions. Because printing technology development since the 1980s took the lead to make all those huge amounts of data available and distributable. Think about TCP/IP protocol, desktop publishing, Postscript/PDF and so on. Today, the internet usage is key to run a print service business. Specially the Online Print sector as a fast growing market shows how useful it could be to combine internet and print knowledge. By the way: some of my favorite print application innovations got developed by Internet and Social Media savvys. Think about apps to print your Instagram and Facebook content. Just with one click. Those inventors like PastBook’s Founder & CEO Stefano Cutello know exactly that print helps to convert the virtual into reality. His motto sounds great: “Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!” He worked for ebay before he founded PastBook as an international App-to-print start-up only a couple of years ago. (See my report and interview).

01 ABTG Congress 24 August 2017 Andreas Weber.001

  • How can printers use the innovations and marketing trends in their favor?

Andreas Weber: Current marketing trends are based on innovation and driven by technology. And as I mentioned print technology is a main driver of innovation and transformation. So from a holistic point of view printers could become transformers if they are able to convert the outcome and benefit of new technologies into valuable customer solutions to fulfill current and future needs.

  • How important is it for the printer to fully understand all the features available on the device (printer, software, etc.) that he has at his/her disposal?

Andreas Weber: Crucial is to make the right choice: which technologies and what kind of new features fits to my purpose and strategic goal? In the past, almost any decision was made to invest in equipment and production tools to optimize what you already did before. In the digital age you have to re-position yourself, your business idea and your production capabilities in the right way to be a valuable transformation partner. Therefor you have to gain knowledge, you have to streamline your processes and you have to be able to enhance your creativity to get the ‚digital‘ link to your customer properly in a sustainable way. Last but not least, to reach that point a printer has to identify the right technology partner on the vendor side to get the best support and realtime services. So its not only about hard- and software anymore. I. E. it will be more important to find a way to print HTML data than to learn how InDesign or PhotoShop works.

  • How important is the exchange of information and practices between European and Latin American markets?

Andreas Weber: 15 years ago I had the honor to make a business trip to Brazil to get great insights in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. I learned a lot to admire the culture and power of Brazil as an emerging, very smart and creative country inspiring other Latin American countries. It was right at that moment when ad agencies from Brazil started to become champions in the worldwide creative community. And I recognized that the printing community in Brazil and other countries in Latin America made profit out of those creative ideas. We discussed at that time the disruptiv impact of the Internet and Online Communication on the newspaper and media business. I figured out that what they did in Brazil was right at the cutting edge! And that seems to be so different compared to Europe and specially Germany with mature markets anyway where people are more or less in a defensive position to keep them self on a high level. That means the exchange of information, practices and experiences is very, very important. BTW: I am glad to have Hamilton Terni Costa as a good old friend and colleague. Since more than 10 years we meet all over the world. We discuss our observations and exchange our view on the latest technologies. At drupa we always met and Hamilton introduced me to his contacts from Latin America joining him. So, on August 24th, 2017 I will be proud to meet all those experts and attendees of the ABTG Congresso to extent my network.

  • What are the main topics of your speech?

Andreas Weber: My key message is quite simple but tough at the same time! — ”If you want to benefit from innovation to strengthen your marketing success you have to be able to understand and to handle transformation in the digital age properly.“ — That means: Innovative printing companies need to transform their production business into a sustainable and future oriented marketing solution provider business to hit market and customer needs. And they have to understand how to support their customers to transform their marketing as well in a sustainable, profitable way.

In my Keynote the attendees will learn:

  • Secrets of Transformation
  • Impact on Print / Graphic Communications
  • Learn from the best (selected cases)
  • Guidelines to create a win-win-win momentum

OBRIGADO! — TX for the great conversation. See you in São Paulo.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 26 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of just 21 news items. Laurel Brunner has also changed the day on which her regular Verdigris Blog is to be issued. In future it will appear on Mondays. However, since this week it is the Spring Bank Holiday in the UK, it will only arrive tomorrow, so you’ll have to wait until next week. Acsenion Day was also a holiday in some European countries last Thursday, so the news week is rather quieter than usual.

‘Bringing market insight, practical advice, technology innovation and examples of diverse print applications together, in our view, is the only way to truly demonstrate the myriad opportunities for PSPs to push into new application areas to support their growth. Feedback during the show suggests that our integrated beauty brand campaign, as well as the two new printed ‘Think’ guides – Think Personal and Think Décor – were extremely well received.’ — Mark Lawn, Director, Graphic & Communications Group Canon Europe

I shall let you explore the headlines for yourself. The daily lead items came from Canon Europe following its wide-format breakthrough at a landmark FESPA in Hamburg; Koenig & Bauer’s AGM held in Wurzburg last week; Pixartprinting and Komori Europe with a three-press LED UV deal in Italy; FESPA with the World Wrap Masters for 2017, from Sweden, Ireland and South Africa; and to round off the week, Heidelberg USA at Vista Color with the latest ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster XL 106 success.

You’ll find more interesting announcements if you scroll down carefully, including Duplo’s upcoming Summer Festival in the UK, set to take place on 14 and 15 June in true Glastonbury and Isle of Wight music festival style, so grab your wellies and rucsacks and head for Addlestone in Surrey.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 12 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with a bumper collection of 45 articles, plus Laurel Brunner’s very latest Verdigris Blog, which provides an update on the development of Eco Labels; and then we have the very latest in our drupa Newsroom with the official kick-off for drupa 2020, which took place at Messe Düsseldorf on Monday during Interpack, highlighting topics which showcase the industry’s innovative force, and a new key visual ’embrace the future’. An example of this can be found below.

With 45 news items for you to check out, and with a strong focus on both FESPA and Interpack, which both took place last week, I shall try to be as brief as possible.

On Tuesday KBA led with its first quarter financial results, having got off to a good start to 2017 with strong new business and a 21% higher order intake, a rise in order backlog and much more if you take time to check out the announcement. On Friday, you will find Kodak’s first quarter results, which also reflect growth in its key product areas and provide an updated overview of progress within its various divisions.

On Wednesday and Thursday, HP and Canon took the top positions, with Thursday’s lead article by Gareth Ward, but there were also key announcements from Ricoh, Canon, Fujifilm and Domino earlier in the week, too, among many others, including Sun Chemical and Blackman & White, EFI and MTEX. You’ll find lots if you scroll down.

Recent sales and installations this week came from EFI, as McGowans Print in Dublin is selected as the world’s second EFI Nozomi single- pass LED inkjet corrugated board press installation; then we have Heidelberg at Haslam Printers in Bolton with a new Versafire CP digital press; and IFS at Holywell Printers in Oxford, with a Horizon HT-30 three-side trimmer, all of which appeared on Wednesday.

On Thursday the really big one came from Manroland Web Systems, with the world’s first Geoman e:line bound for Vorländer in Dreis-Tiefenbach, Germany, and due to commence production in spring of next year. This is followed by MPH Fulfilment in the UK, as it purchases its sixth Edale press; then Simply Cartons, also in the UK, which has installed a Technotrans central cooling system for its KBA-equpped pressroom; and Lasertryk in Denmark, which has chosen Taopix software for its photo commerce division. On Friday Herff Jones in the U.S. has installed a Heidelberg ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster XL 106 long perfector; its second XL 106 long-perfector i n two years; while in the UK, Falconer Print & Packaging has upgraded its Prinect workflows, added a Suprasetter CTP system and a Speedmaster SX52-5 UV press. Last but not least, we have Xaar at Cerlat in Spain with the very latest Xaar 2001+ printheads on Cerlat’s new KERAjet ceramic tile printers.

It’s all about meeting the smartest people at FESPA 2017 (from left): Mark Lawn, Canon Europe; Thomas Haas, Ricoh EMEA; Nav Moulavi, Canon; Erik from Printfactory; and at least: Andreas Weber, ValuePublishing. Photos: Andreas Weber.

On Friday, FESPA announced that its 2018 event will be held in Berlin, Germany in May. Then InPrint Italy is set to take place in Milan in November 2018; and lastly, also from FN Brooks, the founders of InPrint, we have ‘Pure Digital’, a new digital print event for the creative industry, to be staged at RAI Convention Centre in Amsterdam in April 2018.

My tailender for this week goes to Ricoh, as its digital book printing solution and Ricoh Pro C5200 series both receive 2017 EDP Awards, presented in Hamburg during FESPA.

You’ll find much more if you scroll down carefully. Until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.011

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.002

(μεταμόρφωσις, “Transformation, transformierend“, von μετα- (meta-), „Veränderung, Wechsel, Wendepunkt“ und μορφή (morphe), „Form“).

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.007

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.026

Google digitalisiert u. a. Die Kernbotschaft: „Communication first, Products, Services second“.

So z.

Sein Motto/Claim: „Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!“ — Siehe hierzu den ValueDialog „Great task by PastBook’s CEO Stefano Cutello: “Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!”

Zum Beispiel durch „Machine learning to make human brains faster“.

— Foto: Andreas Weber.

Word-class Event. Fantastic. Unforgettable.

Das 5. Online Print Symposium zum Thema “Online-Challenge – Fokus Kundenzentrierung” am 6. / 7. April 2017 in München setzte erneut Maßstäbe.

Von Andreas Weber, Head of Value  |  English Version

In gekonnt professioneller Lässigkeit.

Unmittelbar, in Echtzeit, emotional packend.

Kompliment. Großartig!—Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Zahlen, Daten, Fakten

  • 782 Brandschutzmelder wurden installiert
  • 1.637 Umzugseinheiten wurden abgewickelt
  • Rund 85.000 Arbeitsstunden
  • 12.000 m² Teppichfliesen
  • 35.000 Deckenplatten
  • 2.200 m³ Schutt und Abfall
  • 100 neue Parkplätze
  • 100.000 Pflastersteine für die neuen Parkflächen wurden verlegt
  • 2.000 neue Arbeitsplatz-Möbel (ohne Meetingzonen)
  • 500 alte Büromöbel für die Flüchtlingsarbeit in Krefeld

Highlight: Canon Customer Experience Center

In the UK which takes place from 8 – 9 March; and from Ricoh Europe on Friday, with its plans for Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne next month.
New kit this week from Intec, Zund and Drytac on Monday; from Canon with three new MFP devices on Wednesday; and from Komori on Thursday with its very latest Lithrone press, which it describes as the ultimate one-pass double-sided printing press to meet the most demanding requirements.
The tailender is from Sappi and Felix Schoeller, who jointly announced on Thursday they are to develop sustainable packaging solutions by combining their unique core competencies.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,
Mike Hilton
