Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 20 October 2017

Welcome to this week’s roundup of 25 news items (actually 36 if you count the InPrint collection of 12 on Wednesday all rolled into one). You’ll also find Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog titled Eco-nomy’, which this week looks at how the marriage of ecology and economics is becoming increasingly obvious and necessary for business. As a result, developers are constantly moving to offer technologies that reduce product life cycle footprints, as well as perform more efficiently for their customers. Then we have Andreas Weber back in Online Features with his latest piece: #InfluenceB2B — Transformation for the Digital Age. Please don’t miss them.

Good news this week has been rather difficult to come by at times, after last week’s multiple events which gave it a welcome boost. However, there have been some interesting announcements and developments. Heidelberg led the headlines on Monday as it successfully recertified all of its worldwide locations to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 for quality and environmental management; while Xeikon has discontinued development of its Trillium liquid toner programme announced at drupa last year. On Tuesday, Ricoh South Africa took the lead with digitalisation in the fore at its new demo facility in Johannesburg; and on Wednesday, InPrint news took the first three spots for a dozen of its exhibitors, including Heidelberg with personalisation as a megatrend, as it prepares to showcase its digital 4D printing solutions for the automotive industry; and then we h ad Sun Chemical on Friday, which also announced its IPEX offerings the day prior.

On Thursday, Smithers Pira brought Heidelberg back into the lead, following its most recent report on leading makes of second-hand presses, which reveals that Heidelberg presses are the most productive in the industry – up to a staggering 66% more productive – producing the lowest cost per sheet. The report is available to download from a link in the article, so you can see for yourself. And to round off the week on Friday, Canon Europe has achieved Greenguard Gold Certification from UL Environment for its Océ Arizona UV inks and Océ Colorado UVgel inks.

You’ll find quite a mixed bag of news in addition to the above if you check out the headlines carefully, including more post-Labelexpo successes from Mouvent, and MPS; as well as post World Publishing Expo from Kodak, which debuted new News CTP offerings, improved newspaper plates and its high-speed inkjet additions for newspaper presses.

Sales and installations this week include Ultragraph with Versafire CP from Heidelberg UK; while Gotha Druck und Verpackung in Günthersleben-Wechmar, Germany, has chosen a Goss Sunday 5000. On Tuesday, Hopkins Printing in Columbus, Ohio has increased productivity by 30% with a new Stahlfolder TH 82-P with pallet feeder; and Dome in Sacramento, California has undertaken a multimillion-dollar investment in a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 and Rapida 205; while six months on from its Jet Press 720S installation, Kingfisher Press in the UK confirms its progress. On Wednesday, Polish commercial printer BZGraf continues its modernisation with a new eight-colour Rapida 106 perfector from Koenig & Bauer. Thursday saw LR Medienverlag und Druckerei in Cottbus, eastern Germany invest in a FlexLiner inserting system from Muller Martini; and on Friday MP S celebrates the double sale of its hybrid EF Symjet press at Labelexpo in Brussels; and last but not least, Rengel Printing in St Cloud, Minnesota has more than doubled output following installation of a new Speedmaster SX 52 with coater.

What else? New kit from Duplo UK on Tuesday as it adds Esper direct mail solutions to its other brands portfolio; and a tailender from Manroland Web Systems on Thursday, as its introduced MainPad as its new mobile service and maintenance tablet at WPE in Berlin.

That’s all until next time.
My best regards

Mike Hilton

Value Publishing Shirley Shan Key Vidual.001

Shirley Shen running a workshop in Shanghai.

We proudly present the extraordinary art collection of Shirley Shen from Shanghai. Supported and presented in Germany by Fang Biefang and Andreas Weber. The idea: To share information and to find partners for workshops and exhibitions in Germany.

Shen, Wei Yuan was born in 1972 in a little village close to Ning Bo on the east coast of China. As a daughter of an antique dealer she grew up with the treasures preserved during the Cultural Revolution which were mainly folk art. When she was 20 years old she moved with her father to Shanghai where he opened a small antique shop in the heart of Shanghai. Wei Yuan was interested in her new environment and exposed to the international way of living. She started to attend an evening school to study English and also take computer classes.

At age 24 Wei Yuan took a western name, Shirley, like many Chinese people do. At that time she started her own antique store but her focus was different from most. Shirley was interested in the cultural heritage of China and started dealing and collecting: Chinese emperor robes, ancestor paintings, bound feet shoes and king fish feather jewelry. Her big, international, success came with the internet in 1999. Now she had, as one of the first Chinese antique dealers, a window to the outside world which did not go unnoticed.

With western magazines interest in her collection but even more her life story, Shirley became a small icon. As she grew in knowledge and ‘fame’ so did her collection. Wei Yuan uses her extensive collection of robes, shoes and jewelry to educate and show the beauty of the Chinese history.

Unknown to the western society and forgotten and misunderstood by Chinese Shirley Shen wants to bring back awareness of the Chinese cultural heritage.

Ancestor portraits

Ancestor portraits, also called genealogy paintings, were used for worshiping ancestors during the Chinese Spring Festival and were passed through generations. Characters on the paintings should wear court robes and ornamentations. Official titles and ranks were also required on the paintings.

Ancestor portraits were in elaborate style and were mounted on central scrolls (Zhongtang). At ordinary times, they were treasured in ancestral halls.

Qing Dynasty Costumes

Qing Dynasty costumes can be divided into two categoriescourt robes and folk costumes. Styles of court robes are fixed with different patterns to distinguish official positions. With their styles, textures and patterns different from court robes, folk costumes are more enriched and diversified in their forms.

With an endless variety of embroidery techniques and with textures representing implied meanings and connotations, Qing Dynasty costumes have become one of the best fabrics that have artistic and ornamental values.

Kingfisher Feather Art

“Cui” in ” Dian Cui” (also known as kingfisher feather art) means the feather of kingfisher. Kingfisher feather art is a perfect combination of Chinese traditional metal art and feather art.

Kingfisher feather accessories give an expression to a beauty with a perfect balance between resplendence and plainness, representing the uniqueness of oriental accessories in their details and implicit beauty as well as delicacy of their techniques.

The Three-Inch Golden Lotus Shoes

It’s a unique custom in China. Women in old times started foot binding from childhood, making their feet as small as the bud of lotus. When the foot size is within three inch, it’s called golden lotus, within four inch silver lotus and bigger than four inch iron lotus. The shape and size of women’s feet were regarded as an important standard of women’s beauty.

Von Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Fotos: Canon Europe (oben), Andreas Weber

Mark Lawn: Ganz genau.

Value Publishing ABTG Congresso 2017.001

Preview on the Congress International de Tecnologia Gráfica hosted by ABTG

On 24 August 2017 the Congress International de Technologia Gráfica hosted by Associação Brasileira de Tecnologia Gráfica —ABTG will happen in São Paulo, Brazil. It’s all about cross-media / multichannel and transformation driving innovation and change in the graphic communications industries. And for sure it’s about changing market needs and the future of print.

By recommendation of Hamilton Terni Costa, a good friend and the head of AN Consulting, Andreas Weber, Head of Value, got invited by Manoel Manteigas de Oliveira, Technical Director at ABTG, the Brazilian Association of Printing Technology, to give a keynote presentation. A good opportunity for Tânia Galluzzi to set up an interview in advance for Abigraf Magazine Graphic Technology Magazine.

What are the main topics of your speech?

Andreas Weber: My key message will be: If you want to benefit from innovation to strengthen your marketing success you have to be able to understand and to handle transformation in the digital age properly. That means: Innovative printing companies need to transform their production business into a sustainable and future oriented marketing solution provider business to hit market and customer needs. And they have to understand how to support their customers to transform their marketing as well in a sustainable, profitable way. In my Keynote you will learn:

  • Secrets of Transformation
  • Impact on Print / Graphic Communications
  • Learn from the best (selected cases)
  • Guidelines to create a win-win-win momentum

How important is a congress like this today?

Andreas Weber: I am absolutely sure the Congress International de Technologia Gráfica hosted by ABTG will have a great impact on the whole industry and its customers. It is important to bundle different visions, opinions and talents to master the change and to get ready for transformation. To meet in person enables to reach the best network effects you can get. I am proud to be part of a best-in-class speaker team! It will be my pleasure and honor to blog about it to share all those upcoming news from Brazil with my global network.

Have you ever been in São Paulo?

Andreas Weber: I am happy to get back to São Paulo after 15 years. In 2002 I had the pleasure to meet Francisco Mesquita Neto, the CEO of O Estado, and Luis Fries, the CEO of Folha. We discussed at that time the disruptiv impact of the Internet and Online Communication on the newspaper and media business. I figured out that what they did in Brazil was right at the cutting edge!  — And last but not least: I admire the art & culture in São Paulo — very well known and loved by me for decades as a centre of philosophy and amazing (jazz) music.

—Thanks for the conversation. We will be happy to welcome you in Brazil.

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 02 June 2017

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 20 news items for you. It hasn’t been a spectacular week for news due to last week’s holiday interruptions and with more this past weekend and on Monday 5 June for Whitsun in some European countries, but there’s still a reasonable selection for you to go through which I shall not bother to highlight this week, as well as some superb installations.

Don’t miss Gareth Ward at Springfield Solutions on Wednesday, at the unveiling of its latest expansion, making it the largest all-digital labels business in the UK, together with its third Screen Truepress Jet L350 inkjet label press with an online Digicon 3 line, as well as an offline Digicon 3, to handle shorter production runs from the other presses.

Other successes this week include KBA Sheetfed in the UK; Esko Kongsberg in Madrid; KBA at B&K Offsetdruck in Ottersweier, as its new C16 web press came on stream right on schedule on 1 June; Technotrans in the UK; EFI in Finland; then Heidelberg and KBA in North America, and finally Esko and Kongsberg in Belgium.

There’s a new addition in our drupa Newsroom, as the drupa Prize for 2017 goes to Anne Sokoll for her doctoral thesis, chosen by the Faculty of Philosophy of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Also among Thursday’s headlines.

That’s all until next time. With best regards,

Mike Hilton

A milestone at FESPA 2017 for Canon: blown away by the market’s response to the Océ Colorado and how it cements Canon’s reputation for innovation in the wide-format sector. — Photos: Canon Europe and Andreas Weber, Mainz/Germany.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 26 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of just 21 news items. Laurel Brunner has also changed the day on which her regular Verdigris Blog is to be issued. In future it will appear on Mondays. However, since this week it is the Spring Bank Holiday in the UK, it will only arrive tomorrow, so you’ll have to wait until next week. Acsenion Day was also a holiday in some European countries last Thursday, so the news week is rather quieter than usual.

‘Bringing market insight, practical advice, technology innovation and examples of diverse print applications together, in our view, is the only way to truly demonstrate the myriad opportunities for PSPs to push into new application areas to support their growth. Feedback during the show suggests that our integrated beauty brand campaign, as well as the two new printed ‘Think’ guides – Think Personal and Think Décor – were extremely well received.’ — Mark Lawn, Director, Graphic & Communications Group Canon Europe

I shall let you explore the headlines for yourself. The daily lead items came from Canon Europe following its wide-format breakthrough at a landmark FESPA in Hamburg; Koenig & Bauer’s AGM held in Wurzburg last week; Pixartprinting and Komori Europe with a three-press LED UV deal in Italy; FESPA with the World Wrap Masters for 2017, from Sweden, Ireland and South Africa; and to round off the week, Heidelberg USA at Vista Color with the latest ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster XL 106 success.

You’ll find more interesting announcements if you scroll down carefully, including Duplo’s upcoming Summer Festival in the UK, set to take place on 14 and 15 June in true Glastonbury and Isle of Wight music festival style, so grab your wellies and rucsacks and head for Addlestone in Surrey.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 19 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of 30 selected articles, plus Laurel Brunner’s two latest Verdigris Blogs: a post-Fespa bonus published on Wednesday, and the usual Friday blog, which touches on the environmental strides made in prepress and with printing plates in particular, citing Agfa Graphics’ examples. An article in our news on Tuesday from Fujifilm and Kemtek South Africa can also be linked to this, as it expands the second half of Laurel’s blog from a Fujifilm and Kemtek Imaging Systems’ perspective, with notable achievements in South Africa.

We have three Online Features in Chapter 05 for you: from Esko, as K+D´s Swiss passion for precision and Esko´s Equinox ensure a perfect colour match for its pharmaceutical packaging customers. Then from Durst which is now field-testing its flagship system, the Delta SPC 130, as Schumacher Packaging in Germany becomes its field test partner; and the third from the BPIF with Printing Outlook for Q1, which reports a better than expected start to 2017 for printing and packaging with output growth set to continue in Q2, but with costs climbing.

The lead news items come with the intro from the BPIF on Monday for the latest issue of Printing Outlook; then on Tuesday from Heidelberg as it partners with Steinemann in an agreement to co-operate on marketing Steinemann’s digital print finishing systems.

‘We have already been providing our customers with an integrated offering covering all manufacturers for many years with the Saphira products. We want to expand this approach to our customers’ entire value chain. With our global sales and service network in combination with Prinect, we offer interested companies the ideal platform with which they can easily integrate their portfolio. In the future we want to increasingly offer our customers a combined value proposition comprising equipment, service, and consumables, something that no other provider is able to do, and in this way further enhance our competitiveness and that of our customers,’ says Dr. Ulrich Hermann, member of the management board responsible for Digital Business & Services at Heidelberg.

Wednesday saw UPM and the FSC announce a global strategic partnership which aims to deliver benefits to forest owners through FSC certification, and to increase FSC-certified wood supply.

Thursday’s headlines were led by Manroland Web Systems at Druck Styria in Graz, Austria, which has signed a contract with a total order value of 16 million Euros. This includes a new Colorman e:line newspaper press, and also provides MD Alexander Wassermann with the opportunity to update us on Manroland Web’s progress, and the new independent production company, Manroland Web Produktionsgesellschaft, now also part of the Possehl group.

Other recent sales and installations successes include Friday’s leader from Esko at K+D in Switzerland; followed by Mimeo and its one-billion impressions success with a fleet of Kodak NexPress machines. We’ve already mentioned Kemtek, Fujiflm and ZAC above. The customers included in this article are Northern Keoagile Printers in Newlands, and Blesston Printers in Roodepoort, both close to Johannesburg, South Africa. On Tuesday we had the Durst flagship Delta SPC 130 system at Schumacher Packaging, as Durst’s field test partner in the packaging segment. This is followed by a new KBA Rapida 106 12-colour press at Canadian Bank Note in Ottawa. On Thursday, we had Bakergoodchild in Birmingham adding a Renz punching system; and lastly, Historika in Switzerland planning to upgrade to print high-quality graphics up to four times faster, using EFI’s new Vutek hybrid roll/flatbed LX3 Pro wide-format LED inkjet printer.

You’ll find post-Interpack and post-FESPA news this week from EyeC, Esko, Neschen and Mimaki, Xaar and Zünd, along with a number of prestigious EDP Awards presented during a ceremony at FESPA to Esko, Kodak, Agfa, Domino and KAMA; and with more announcements still arriving for inclusion in next week’s news.

The tailender this week goes to Ricoh South Africa (Wednesday) as it is set to embrace modern operations methods and move from Bedfordview to Linbro Business Park, near Sandton, Johannesburg on 26 May 2017, from where it will be closer to its key customer base.

You’ll find so much more if you scroll down carefully. Until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 12 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with a bumper collection of 45 articles, plus Laurel Brunner’s very latest Verdigris Blog, which provides an update on the development of Eco Labels; and then we have the very latest in our drupa Newsroom with the official kick-off for drupa 2020, which took place at Messe Düsseldorf on Monday during Interpack, highlighting topics which showcase the industry’s innovative force, and a new key visual ’embrace the future’. An example of this can be found below.

With 45 news items for you to check out, and with a strong focus on both FESPA and Interpack, which both took place last week, I shall try to be as brief as possible.

On Tuesday KBA led with its first quarter financial results, having got off to a good start to 2017 with strong new business and a 21% higher order intake, a rise in order backlog and much more if you take time to check out the announcement. On Friday, you will find Kodak’s first quarter results, which also reflect growth in its key product areas and provide an updated overview of progress within its various divisions.

On Wednesday and Thursday, HP and Canon took the top positions, with Thursday’s lead article by Gareth Ward, but there were also key announcements from Ricoh, Canon, Fujifilm and Domino earlier in the week, too, among many others, including Sun Chemical and Blackman & White, EFI and MTEX. You’ll find lots if you scroll down.

Recent sales and installations this week came from EFI, as McGowans Print in Dublin is selected as the world’s second EFI Nozomi single- pass LED inkjet corrugated board press installation; then we have Heidelberg at Haslam Printers in Bolton with a new Versafire CP digital press; and IFS at Holywell Printers in Oxford, with a Horizon HT-30 three-side trimmer, all of which appeared on Wednesday.

On Thursday the really big one came from Manroland Web Systems, with the world’s first Geoman e:line bound for Vorländer in Dreis-Tiefenbach, Germany, and due to commence production in spring of next year. This is followed by MPH Fulfilment in the UK, as it purchases its sixth Edale press; then Simply Cartons, also in the UK, which has installed a Technotrans central cooling system for its KBA-equpped pressroom; and Lasertryk in Denmark, which has chosen Taopix software for its photo commerce division. On Friday Herff Jones in the U.S. has installed a Heidelberg ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster XL 106 long perfector; its second XL 106 long-perfector i n two years; while in the UK, Falconer Print & Packaging has upgraded its Prinect workflows, added a Suprasetter CTP system and a Speedmaster SX52-5 UV press. Last but not least, we have Xaar at Cerlat in Spain with the very latest Xaar 2001+ printheads on Cerlat’s new KERAjet ceramic tile printers.

It’s all about meeting the smartest people at FESPA 2017 (from left): Mark Lawn, Canon Europe; Thomas Haas, Ricoh EMEA; Nav Moulavi, Canon; Erik from Printfactory; and at least: Andreas Weber, ValuePublishing. Photos: Andreas Weber.

On Friday, FESPA announced that its 2018 event will be held in Berlin, Germany in May. Then InPrint Italy is set to take place in Milan in November 2018; and lastly, also from FN Brooks, the founders of InPrint, we have ‘Pure Digital’, a new digital print event for the creative industry, to be staged at RAI Convention Centre in Amsterdam in April 2018.

My tailender for this week goes to Ricoh, as its digital book printing solution and Ricoh Pro C5200 series both receive 2017 EDP Awards, presented in Hamburg during FESPA.

You’ll find much more if you scroll down carefully. Until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 28 April 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 39 articles over the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, and three new additions to Online Features from Heidelberg, featuring Interpack 2017 which begins in Düsseldorf on Thursday; then Zero Defect Print Production for commercial and packaging printing; and finally, a special Zero Defect Packaging event set to take place on 10 May, the last day of Interpack, at Heidelberg’s site in Wiesloch-Walldorf.

Smart Print Shop. Zero errors in packaging printing.

Continued globalization, rising demand for different types of packaging, and a shorter time to market are being accompanied by increases in complexity and thus the risk of errors in production operations. At the Heidelberg Info Day on Zero Defect Packaging, you can find out how easy it is to master this growing complexity by creating a smart print shop and using automated quality assurance solutions.

There are several more good Interpack-related articles this week, with two from Leonhard KURZ on Monday – one for new software, and one for a new foil transfer finishing machine for web or roll-fed applications. From TRESU, which will demonstrate its iCoat coater for integration with HP Indigo digital presses; and on Wednesday, which saw KURZ back with a new prototyping service; Esko addressing the needs of brands and converters with a simplified way to manage, design and produce packaging among its comprehensive lineup for this major packaging event; and finally Durst with Europe’s first showing of its integrated label and speciality package printing and workflow system, as well as the European debut of the Durst Tau 330 UV inkjet / OMET hybrid system first sh own in prototype at Labelexpo Americas last year.

Heidelberg led on Wednesday with the market launch of its Zero Defect Print Production – Prinect Inspection Control 2, which is now available for all formats from half-size to VLF. Aug. Heinrigs in Aachen, part of the RLC Packaging Group; and Novaprint in Oldenburg, a member of the Bagel-Packaging Group, are just two of the first print shops using the new system.

With FESPA just around the corner you will find numerous pre-show articles, beginning on Monday with an overview from Gareth Ward which led the headlines; followed by the FESPA Printeriors’ Conference lineup, then on Friday we have FESPA’s full Conference Programme, followed by Epson, Kornit Digital and Mimaki, each detailing their plans for the Hamburg show which takes place from 8 – 12 May. On Thursday KBA-MetalPrint and KBA-Digital & Web announced a brand new keyless inking printing system, CS MetalCan, which will be introduced at METPACK in Essen, Germany this week. The show runs from 2 to 6 May.

On Tuesday, UPM-Kymmene published its Interim Report for first quarter of 2017. We also published first quarter results from EFI, followed by Gareth Ward’s commentary and take on EFI’s display graphics Q1 revenues disappointment.

Installations this week began on Tuesday as Glasgow printer Core Image adds a Versafire CV five-colour digital press from Heidelberg UK; SDPS Poinçon in Normandy with an Inca Onset X2 from distributor Fujifilm; and Indiana Carton Company with a new Heidelberg 1650mm wide-web (Gallus) flexo press. On Wednesday, Core Image added a new Horizon Stitchliner in East Kilbride; while Royle Printing in Wisconsin has invested in a new KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press.

On Thursday, Gareth Ward reported that South Wales printer Lexon Group became the first in the UK to buy a Komori Impremia S29 B2 UV inkjet sheetfed press, pairing it with a new Highcon Euclid IIIS digital cutting and creasing machine for short run high value packaging production. This is followed by SE Litho in Johannesburg, South Africa, as it adds a Xerox Versant 2100 digital colour press; then PeterLynn in Corby, UK with a new Xeikon CX3 digital colour label press. Friday saw Moquin Press near San Francisco and Heidelberg USA leading the Industry 4.0 charge, with the United States’ first integrated ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster press. Also on Thursday, please don’t miss Martin Bailey with Move over PDF 1.7. here comes PDF 2.0! – a new White Paper summarising the changes for print production – and a new ISO standard set for May publication.

Our tailender this week goes to Andreas Weber with ValuePublishing Report: The Future of Print is On-line!, as he comments that organisers Fogra, BVDM, and Zipcon can be proud and satisfied, ‘With the 5th Online Print Symposium 2017 (in short: #ops2017) they have once more managed to set the bar higher.’ See the intro on Friday and follow the links in the article to read more about it.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find lots more if you scroll down carefully. It’s been a busy week.

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.011

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.002

(μεταμόρφωσις, “Transformation, transformierend“, von μετα- (meta-), „Veränderung, Wechsel, Wendepunkt“ und μορφή (morphe), „Form“).

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.007

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.026

Google digitalisiert u. a. Die Kernbotschaft: „Communication first, Products, Services second“.

So z.

Sein Motto/Claim: „Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!“ — Siehe hierzu den ValueDialog „Great task by PastBook’s CEO Stefano Cutello: “Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!”

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.022

Zum Beispiel durch „Machine learning to make human brains faster“.
