Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 13 May 2016

Welcome to another roundup of 29 news highlights for the past week together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday, which this week discusses the World Economic Forum and its Project Mainstream’s most recent white paper, which deals with paper.

We also have three new additions in Online Features Chapter 05, highlighting UPM Biofore in Beijing with a unique project which has little to do with printing or paper, but is just too beautiful and stunning to ignore; then we have the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for Q2; and then SF Taylor in the UK with its new KBA Rapida 75.

You will also find a new drupa ante portas Blog article featuring Objectif Lune, by Andreas Weber, as well as another 14 new additions in our drupa Newsroom from Exhibitors. These are led by KBA Digital, Hybrid Software, Heidelberg Workflow, Heidelberg CTP, Durst Inkjet, Tecnau, Agfa Graphics CTP, Leonhard KURZ with a new foil; Chili Publish, Domino with high-speed Inkjet; Fujifilm wide-format Inkjet, Alwan Color Expertise, and Techawa, and these latest additions now bring the total of pre-show announcements to 188, with just two weeks to go before the show opens its doors a fortnight tomorrow on Tuesday 31 May.

Major news leads with week came from Sappi on Monday with its Q2 and half-year 2016 results which were excellent; then on Tuesday from Heidelberg with its preliminary figures for 2015/2016 and also very positive and correspond to a Euro 100 million turnaround. On Wednesday, KBA announced its new Website for the Group; and on Thursday we had KBA’s interim Q1 report for 2016. Friday saw the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for Q2 take the lead.

This week has seen a few nice sales and installations successes, and also some new kit which is non-drupa related, specifically from Agfa Graphics with PrintSphere, a cloud-based data exchange service for PSPs, and from Quark on Friday. You’ll also find a couple of software upgrades.

Recent sales and installations kicked off on Monday with IFS and Horizon at Windsor Print; Tuesday saw Bertelsmann Printing Group’s direct mail and document solutions division, Campaign, opts for Screen’s Truepress Jet 520ZZ inkjet system for direct marketing; also ProImage with OnColor in the USA. On Wednesday, Muller Martini highlighted 13 Presto and Presto Digital saddle stitcher installations in the UK and Ireland over the past year, this was followed by Xeikon at DOCUsystem in Frankfurt, Germany. Thursday saw Portuguese fashion printer Blur extend its direct-to-garment business with Kornit Digital‘s Allegro and a Zund cut solution. To round off the week on Friday, Cheadle, UK-based Cestrian Imaging announced a UK first with its EFI Reggiani PRO 340 digital textile inkjet printer purchase; and lastly Manroland Sheetfed highlighted its latest eight-colour Roland 700 press installation in China.

The tailender this week goes to the Ghent Workgroup, which welcomed two new members on board: Ricoh and CHILI Publish, in the headlines on Wednesday.

That’s it until next time. I hope you find more of interest among the links below.
With my best regards,
Mike Hilton

drupa 2016 highlights ENG

By Andreas Weber | Click to access german version

Seldom has the run-up to drupa as a global trade fair for printing and paper technology been so exciting. Seldom have we been able to conduct so many interesting talks prior to drupa as now. There is hardly any exhibitor who can still afford to have a silo mentality (“My Innovations — My World”). It is rather more a question of “How do we align ourselves in an interlinked world marked by digitalisation?”

Industry leader Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG was one of the first exhibitors to express this when it revealed its new drupa motto “Simply Smart” at its year-end press conference held at the beginning of December 2015. Smart means: Making interlinked, relevant, consistent and interactive new solutions possible for the communication of printed matter at various levels. (See my commentary and real-time report “Heideldruck 4.0: Zurück in die Zukunft | Back to the future”.)

Value Blog Dialog Harald Weimer 12-2015 ENG.001

The smartly chosen highlight themes of drupa 2016 point the way ahead. And emphasise a greatly expanded range of products to be exhibited: In addition to the “standards” Print and Packaging as well as Green Printing, there are now 3D Printing, Functional Printing and Multichannel.

If you thoroughly reflect on these themes, you will come to the realisation that they do not introduce a new silo mentality. On the contrary. Multichannel pervades all the themes of drupa 2016, since it is what defines the basic principle of how innovations need to be staged. Packaging, 3D Printing and Functional Printing open up completely new business opportunities that make the drupa this year more attractive than ever for new target groups. The novelty: The new opportunities call for a new type of cooperation among technology providers, their users and their customers (brand companies/commercial enterprises, organisations, etc.).

“Time for a Change: Touch the Future NOW!”

Our focus in the coverage and commentary will be oriented to the above-mentioned new understanding of drupa 2016. First, with a 100% multichannel approach in trade communication through ValuePublishing. Second, through addressing new target groups in the culture and creative industries — with annual revenues of €146 billion — as the key innovation drivers for the economy as a whole.

We will be providing highly topical content in real time on all the drupa highlight themes. As for the technology trends in print and packaging, the latest digital printing applications will receive our full attention. Finishing and innovative solutions in paper technology are also relevant when it comes to the success of print in the communications mix.

We are having an exciting time analysing the types of themes and activities that certain exhibitors will be able to muster up. There are bound to be some surprises in this area. That HP with its Graphic Solution Business division, for instance, may end up for the first time being the biggest exhibitor. Or that, if we consider our analyses from the Canon Expo 2015, imaging specialist Canon may very well be the only exhibitor to cover all six drupa highlight themes!

It will also be extremely revealing to know what impact the split of the Xerox Corporation into two companies will have and how its claim to leadership will be represented. In any case, with its subsidiary XMPie, Xerox is the trendsetter in multichannel innovations.

We already published a series of extraordinary conversations with leading multichannel experts. Please click and read:

  1. ValueDialog with Jacob Aizikowitz, XMPie President:
Multichannel leads to sustainable business success in the digital age!

  3. ValueDialog with Patrick Donner, TraffiC Print Online Solutions GmbH:
New take on multichannel communications: “There is no either/or!”
  4. ValueDialog with Renato Vögeli, Vögeli AG Medienproduktion & Druck:
Multichannel turns communication into a personal experience!

More and up-to-the-minute news coming soon. The excitement is growing – and we’re excited, too, because: drupa ante portas!

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 January 2016

A Happy New Year to all our readers and followers, subscribers and sponsors. Despite the challenges, I sincerely hope 2016 will turn out to be a good one for all of us as we approach drupa in Düsseldorf at the end of May, preceded by FESPA Digital in Amsterdam in March.

Welcome to news highlights for the last few days or so in 2015, and then for the New Year, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs for the first three weeks of 2016. You will also find the very latest in our FESPA Newsroom for the upcoming FESPA Digital and its associated events in Amsterdam in March, as well as the very latest FESPA corporate news for the Southern European Print Congress in Italy in April. You may also take note that the deadline for this year’s FESPA Awards has now been extended until 15 February.

The latest also appears in our drupa Newsroom from visitors and the organisers, together with the most recent Expert Article No 6 by Ron Gilboa, director of InfoTrends’ Production & Industrial Printing Advisory Service. Please don’t miss them as drupa 2016 is just asround the corner.

I won’t highlight the news this week as there are a lot you can browse through yourself. Just don’t miss EFI and Xaar appointments, and also those from KBAIFS, and Heidelberg and Gallus in the UK. Gerold Linzbach is also back at work as CEO of Heidelberg. You’ll find some stunning sales and installations, including web presses from KBA and Manroland Web Systems, and several important pieces of new kit, too… especially from KAMA and Duplo, and Epson with a new range of wide-format inkjet presses.

Newsmaker of the year thus far and as my tailender, goes to UPM Kymmene for its various environmental awards and accolades. Our sincere congratulations to everyone involved.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Value Blog Dialog: Harald Weimer sieht Print durch Vernetzung und Integration an der Spitze automatisierter, smarter Kommunikationslösungen.

Von Andreas Weber

(English Version available)

Dezember 2015 vertiefende Fragen an Heideldruck-Vorstand Harald Weimer stellen.

  7. Print wird Teil einer Welt der „Smart Communication“ werden.
  8. Unsere neue Strategie beinhaltet daher das Versprechen „More than Machines“ sowie das Credo „Listen. Inspire.

Welche Rolle spielt Heideldruck in diesen umfassenden Szenarien?

Inspire.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 6 December 2015

Welcome to another week of news highlights, feature articles, the very latest drupa 2016 and FESPA news and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 04 December, as Laurel invites you to spend December in Paris, suitably attired in her little black dress for the occasion.

From Messe Düsseldorf and drupa 2016 we have the second Global Insights Report Executive Summary, which is now available for you below, and also as a free download in up to seven languages from the drupa Website. You will find a fully-illustrated PDF of the Summary in our own drupa Newsroom version of the article. Independent consulting and market research companies Printfuture, UK, and Wissler & Partner, Switzerland, were appointed by Messe Düsseldorf to conduct the two-report series. This second part is entitled: ‘Touch the future – Applications that can create growth’. The full report is now available to purchase on the drupa 2016 Website and is based on a survey conducted in Spring 2015 in which over 750 participants took part globally, with all regions well represented.

The news this week contains some stunning announcements, not least of which from Heidelberg on Monday where Hofmann Druck in Nürnberg sets new standards with its latest long perfector: Europe’s first eight-colour Speedmaster 106 with LED. Tuesday comes from China, while on Wednesday, Manroland Web Systems has announced a successful turn in 2015 with sales, order intake and EBT noticeably increased. The company, now a member of the Lübeck-based Possehl Group, also announced the appointment of a second managing director. Thursday was led by Messe Düsseldorf for the Executive Summary already mentioned above. While on Friday, Heidelberg used its internationally-attended Packaging Days event in November, held at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site, to showcase new products from its partnership with Masterwork for the packaging sector.

HP Inc and KBA jointly provided the truly exciting news of the week late on Friday out of their joint two-day unveiling event held in Wurzburg on Thursday and Friday, where DS Smith Packaging revealed that it is to install the very first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S. Combining pre-print and digital printing in one machine, the gigantic inkjet web press with a web width of 2.80m was developed in under two years by HP and KBA-Digital & Web Solutions working in close co-operation. It opens up new opportunities in terms of the flexible production of corrugated packaging in various formats and run sizes with digital pre-print liners. You’ll find it in Online Features Chapter 08, and also with a link leading the news on Monday of next week.

Software releases came from Axaio and CHILI Publisher; a new cutter from Rotoflex on Tuesday; while new orders and installations were announced by Xeikon, MPS, and Rotocon. Epson announced a new concept world first office papermaking system on Thursday called PaperLab, which the company claims, promises to revolutionise office recycling by securely turning documents into new office paper. An interesting concept, perhaps?

To round off the week, both Agfa Graphics and Hubergroup have announced the 2016 Calendars, to remind us that the festive season is upon us once again and the New Year is really not all that far away. In fact, POLAR also reminded us of this on Thursday, as it details its training courses for 2016 to take place in Hofheim.

The tailender is devoted to Xerox, asCDP, an international environmental organisation names Xerox as a leader in providing reliable information about carbon emissions and energy use. This comes as COP21, the United Nations climate change conference in Paris gets underway. That’s the same event that Laurel talks about in her  Blog.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Smart Technologies need Smart Solutions need Smart Communications: Twitter- und Facebook-Posts machten die Heidedruck Pressekonferenz popullär. In Echtzeit!

Was sollte also getan werden?

  3. Werthaltigkeit ist Trumpf!

Neuer Focus: Smart Solutions, Synergetics, Collaboration

— Alles in allem: Keine leichte Kost!

„I like their [Heidelberg’s] application. If speed and PQ increase they can get into production lines. 4D is cool.

Leasing-Spezialisten. Siehe: ValueCheck! — How to Create the Real Value of Communication  via @ValueCommAG.

HINWEIS: Im Nachgang zur Pressekonferenz vom 1. und 2. Dezember 2015 ergaben sich beim Value Blog Dialog spannende Aspekte im Gespräch mit Heideldruck-Vorstand Harald Weimer. Siehe: „drupa ante portas: Print ist SMART!“

Value Blog Dialog Harald Weimer 12-2015.001

ABSOLUT LESENSWERT, was Bernd da schreibt und anmerkt!

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 26 October 2015

Welcome to another week of news highlights with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 23 October, which this week examines the merits and demands of meaningful Environmental Awards for printers. Also a reminder about the best practice guide, ‘Optimised Paper Handling and Logistics’ which will shortly be released in an Alpha version for open industry comment. You can also apply to take part or to comment! You’ll find the article and links for that in Online Features Chapter 01.

News this week began with Fusion Office Automation in the Eastern Cape taking over responsibility for Ricoh’s Port Elizabeth branch and the territory. We have articles relating to the upcoming London Calling Duplo event from 3 – 4 November (Monday); InPrint 2015 in Munich from 10 – 12 November with Heidelberg’s participation with full colour 4D printing; ITMA in Milan with Mimaki from 12 – 10 November; SGIA and Kornit Digital from 4 – 6 November; EFI Connect Worldwide Users’ Conference, 19 – 22 January with Infotrends; and Ricoh at drupa 2016 from 31 May to 10 June (all on Tuesday).

Wednesday saw EFI take the lead with record Q3 results, following completion of the acquisitions of Reggiani and Matan on 1 July, which are now being quickly integrated into EFI’s product lines and offerings; while on Thursday, Inca Digital announced the launch of its new X-series large-format inkjet press range. As our headline says: You can now drive the new Inca Digital X3!

On Friday, leading London print house Park Communications continued its major investment programme with a 6-colour B1 KBA Rapida 106 with integral coating, following purchases earlier this year of a HP Indigo 7800 digital press and Kalmar mailing equipment with mail matching software. The new press will be commissioned early in the New Year. Other notable sales this week include the UK’s first Low Energy UV installation from Heidelberg with a Speedmaster XL 75-4 LE-UV press complete with Inpress Colour Control for Wincanton Print; while Germany’s Medienhaus Plump reported on its recent Muller Martini Pantera perfect binder (Wednesday). Backtracking to Monday, KBA announced the installation of a new eight-colour Rapida 106 at Litografia e Imprenta LiL in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, for school textbooks and education publications; and Manroland Web has relocated a 48-page Lithoman with extensive upgrades at WKS Group in Essen, Germany. Thursday saw Muller Martini again, this time reporting on Frey Plus, a leading German direct mail firm based inUlm, in Southern Germany, which was first company in the world to commission the Muller Martini MailLiner.

You will find other new kit and software releases and more news if you scroll down carefully.

The tailender is not strictly print-related, but it does involve one of the world’s leading paper makers wearing one of its other hats: UPM has started field tests of wood-based diesel fuel in Helsinki region bus traffic with VTT and HSL, supported by St1, Volvo and Transdev… Biodiesel finally becomes a commercial reality! You’ll find this in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s all from me until next time,

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
