Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 April 2016

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights for the past week, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday, which this week asks a question about ISO14001. There are also three new additions in Online Fetures Chapters 02 and 04. In Chapter 02 the article from EFI at ISA this past week highlights four new machines, each described in detail and illustrated, which were launched at the show in Orlando. Chapter 04 includes two new articles from Esko with Flexo at Uniprint in Durban; South Africa, and also Toray with waterless for CDs, DVDs and more at Cinram in Aachen, Germany.

In our drupa Newsroom you can really have a field-day. There’s another extensive interview in the drupa ante portas section with BW Papersystems’ Patrick Walczak, by Andreas Weber; this is accompanied by 19 new additions to our Exhibitor section led by Manroland Sheetfed, together with ContiTech, DW Renzmann, Baumer, Siegwerk, Steinemann, Muller and Kern-ICM; FUTEC, EyeC, Theurer, Xitron, BST Eltromat, Muller Martini, Leonhard Kurz, Mimaki, KAMA, Creative Edge, Massivit 3D, and Hunkeler Systeme. You will find lots of exciting new kit to be launched at the show among most of them.

Bild PR_2016-03-02_BW_Papersystems_at_drupa_2016_graphic

These latest additions now bring news from exhibitors for the upcoming event to 138, plus a further 55 from Messe Düsseldorf, as well as 10 specialist features from key industry journalists; and of course a further 7 in the drupa ante portas section. 210 in total, and with more to come in the 35 days left before this year’s biggest event for the industry opens its doors in Düsseldorf, from 31 May until 10 June.

News leaders from Monday to Friday this week were Leonard Kurz with a new technology to be shown and demonstrated at drupa for precisely positioning holographic single-image designs; then from Sappi Europe, as it strengthens its Packaging and Speciality Papers business in Alfeld, Germany; Agfa Graphics with its latest award; EFI with record First Quarter revenue; and lastly Manroland Sheetfed with its trailblazer line-up for drupa. Another key announcement also came from the Ghent Workgroup on Thursday, but there are just too many other important items to list all of them, so please scroll down carefully and find them for yourself. You’ll discover a number of exciting new software releases as well.

You will, as usual, find a number of key sales and installations successes again this week, with the biggest from Kraft-Schloetels, a member of WKS Druckholding in Germany, on Tuesday, which has ordered a second 160-page high volume Lithoman web offset press from Manroland Web Systems. On Wednesday from Heidelberg, as Villanti in Vermont installs a new Heidelberg XL 106-6+L with Prinect Image Control Next Generation; amd at Sign & Digital UK, when The Handsome Prints Company signed for a Mimaki JFX200-2513UV wide-format flatbed on the first day of the show.

Thursday saw Hybrid Software celebrating the installation of the 400th seat of PACKZ at Z Due in Italy; while Friday turned out to be a fitting end to a busy week with Philtone Litho in the UK set upgrade one of its presses to a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106-5+L in July, to match an existing XL 106-4+L; then we have Glossop Cartons which has just installed the world’s first Highcon Beam digital cutting and creasing machine; and these were followed by Gallus, which announced two more sales of the new Gallus Labelfire digital label printing system in Switzerland and in Europe, although it failed to identify the customers.

The tailender this week goes to Bytes Document Systems and Xerox, which announced the launch of the iGen 5 in South Africa, on Tuesday.

That’s it until next time. I hope you find lots more of interest among the links below.
With my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Gut so!

Live-Video: Andreas Weber via iPad.

„Oops. We can’t find that page for you“, wird lapidar angezeigt. PEINLICH.

Live-Video: Andreas Weber in a 1 min. interview with Canon’s Mark Lawn via iPad.

Andreas Weber Value Analyse Print gewinnt.001.jpeg

Touch the future now!

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 19 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen 39 news items and articles go online since last Monday, with five new additions to our FESPA Newsroom led by Durst, as it plans to unveil its new water-based printing systems and UV automation for LFP and dye-sublimation areas of application in Amsterdam next month; and then five in our drupa Newsroom led by Muller Martini with plans to show finishing for variable data printing live at the upcoming major event at the end of May and early June in Düsseldorf. We also have Konica Minolta, Ryobi and MHI, or RMGTas it is now known, planning to debut its newly designed range of presses, including hybrid digital; Global Graphics and Hybrid Software; and lastly CGS, as it announces the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ with results to be shown at drupa.

In Online Features the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for the First Quarter of 2016 introduction is highlighted; while Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday of last week looks at the successful recycling of paper cups by James Cropper Paper in the United Kingdom.

The week’s news began on a positive note on Monday from Manroland Web Systems, as managing director Jörn Gossécomments on the company’s positive 2015 financial year, which saw both an increase in profit and a boost in the company’s market share.

A major subject this week is that of labels and labelling, where on Friday the International label association FINAT previews 2016, as the industry is constantly challenged to provide much more for brand owners and consumers. The world of labelling is unquestionably one of the most dynamic and innovative industry sectors today. Thomas Hagmaier, current president of FINAT and CEO of Hagmaier Etiketten in southern Germany, offers an informed summary of the current status in 2016: Says Hagmaier, ‘Delivering a fine piece of label design and print that sells the product on the retail shelf is still essential, but today our industry is challenged to provide so much more, for the brand owner and the consumer. To meet an ever-growing raft of brand owner demands, the label supply chain has to meet challenges posed not only by industry innovation, but also by new packaging and labelling choices, online retailing, incredible refinements in imaging technologies, the need fo r sustainable solutions and, of course, international regulations.’ Don’t miss the article!

Also on Friday, you will also find Domino with UV textures for labels; Rotoflex with new security label inspection options; and then MPS, Screen with its Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press, Mathom and AVT, all preparing to join Rotocon at ProPack Africa in March in Johannesburg. Then we had Xaar on Monday, with an expanded product range for UV, which is ideal for printing UV spot varnish for labels, packaging and graphics applications.

As for new sales and installations as the new year gets under way, we had Stroma on Monday with its latest digital purchase from Heidelberg UK . Thursday saw BCQ with EFI Vutek; and on Friday, we had Positive ID Labelling Systems in the UK, which is growing its digital print service offering with the company’s second EFI Jetrion label press – this time a Jetrion 4900 model. Cape Town’s original fabric label printing company, Julius Solomon Specialist Labels, has added Xerox speciality silver and gold dry inks for packaging and swing tickets; and lastly,  Liverpool, UK-based Rayross has invested in Duplo to offer PUR perfect binding to its own customers, as well as  as trade service to commercial printers, design agencies and more.

Exciting new kit this week was led by Duplo on Monday, as it unveiled its new iSaddle PRO Digital System targeted at near-line high-end saddle stitching production. Canon on Tuesday with new entry-level MFP printers; and on Wednesday, Stora Enso as it introduces a new CKB Carrier board grade to be shown at the NEC Birmingham at the Packaging Innovations show on 24 – 25 February 2016.

There’s much more if you scroll down carefully, including as this week’s tailender, the new alliance for South Africa’s DigitalView and Mellow Colour among Wednesday’s headlines. Mellow Colour’s founder and director, Alan Dresch, is already known to many in South Africa from his earlier days with Linotype, as well as more recently with Mellow Colour. DigitalView is also in the drupa Newsroom with CGS, announcing the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ which we mentioned earlier.

That’s about it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 12 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen only 30 news items and articles go online since last Monday, including one new addition to our FESPA Newsroom from Esko; plus six in our drupa Newsroom, as we add a new ‘drupa ante portas Blogs’ section from Andreas Weber. We also have the two most recent Laurel Brunner Verdigris environmental Blogs from both Monday and Friday, as Laurel gets back on track. We decided to also include the Monday Blog as our Monday News leader, to remind you of this valuable environmental section on our Website [since 2008], which can be accessed via the Index link at any time. All of Laurel’s Blogs and articles are still accessible in our archives.

Kay financial news leaders this week came from Langley Holdings [Manroland Sheetfed] on Tuesday, reporting that Manroland Sheetfed, the largest of the group’s divisions, was in positive territory for the fourth year in succession following increases in sales and orders; and then on Wednesday from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, which has increased sales and recorded a net profit after taxes in its third financial quarter 2015/2016; and lastly from Sappi, also on Wednesday, which has seen its first quarter profits triple on significantly stronger performance. Wonderful news considering the seriously negative news surrounding major markets and currencies this past week.

drupa 2016 newsroom Multichannel

Thursday saw EFI take the lead at the recent Cevisama 2016 in Valencia, where the manufacturer won the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass ‘Alfa de Oro’ award for machinery innovation. You’ll also find a report from Ricoh SA following new Ricoh research, which claims that junk mail is pushing European consumer loyalty to the limits, further citing that 84% of consumers will take action over irrelevant, non-personalised communications. It is a recurring topic which perhaps warrants debate, but we’ve heard it before and nothing much seems to have changed. Antalis took the lead on Friday, as it unveils a new information-packed Website to support customers in the packaging and logistics markets.

As for recent key sales and installations successes, you will several this week led by Durban-based CDR Repro, a printing and production company on Monday, which has doubled its digital printing output with a Xerox J75 press. Then we have Cestrian Imaging UK which has added two EFI Vutek HS Pro high-volume inkjet presses. Tuesday saw a third Muller Martini FlexLiner added at PVS in Austria, as the growing demand for inserts continues to increase. Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Saturday 30 January 2016
Welcome to another busy week of news highlights which has seen no less than 64 articles go online since last Monday, including new additions to our FESPA and drupa Newsrooms and Online Features for 2016. You will also find the latest drupa Expert Article No 7 by Sophie Matthews-Paul, addressing large- and wide-format inkjet.

Once again I will only highlight the odd article as there are just too many and the whole update would become too cumbersome to wade through. Please scroll through them carefully, as there are so many really good articles, and many important announcements, as well as numerous excellent recent orders and installations: led by Manroland Web Systems on Monday for another new Lithoman web – this time for North America; followed on Wednesday by a very large sheetfed order for Heidelberg in Sweden. There are so many more to check out this week, from MPS, Screen, KBA, Heidelberg in the USA and UK; from both Manroland Web and Manroland Sheetfed; IFS with Horizon successes; Xeikon, Asahi, Technotrans with Komoris; Fujifilm inkjet and also Fujifilm with workflow, Bobst with a couple of world firsts, and lastly for Muller Martini in North America with no less than six Sigmaline systems.

You will also find new kit and new consumables announcements this week from Rotoflex, Ricoh, Meech with Xeikon; Onyx for Epson; Hybrid Software, and lastly from Flint Group with a new lightweight sleeve for flexo.

On Thursday, EFI announced excellent results for its fourth quarter and year ended 31 December, 2015; and then came back on Friday with its latest move in China; and also with a special report out of Connect 2016, where EFI revealed its clear and focused picture of the future of printing, and how it plans to respond to market changes.

On Saturday as a late addition, Xerox took the headlines with its Fourth Quarter and 2015 earnings… plus a surprise announcement following a comprehensive structural review, that the Company is to separate into two Public Companies by the end of 2016. You’ll also find Andreas Weber’s take on the planned split.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 January 2016

A Happy New Year to all our readers and followers, subscribers and sponsors. Despite the challenges, I sincerely hope 2016 will turn out to be a good one for all of us as we approach drupa in Düsseldorf at the end of May, preceded by FESPA Digital in Amsterdam in March.

Welcome to news highlights for the last few days or so in 2015, and then for the New Year, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs for the first three weeks of 2016. You will also find the very latest in our FESPA Newsroom for the upcoming FESPA Digital and its associated events in Amsterdam in March, as well as the very latest FESPA corporate news for the Southern European Print Congress in Italy in April. You may also take note that the deadline for this year’s FESPA Awards has now been extended until 15 February.

The latest also appears in our drupa Newsroom from visitors and the organisers, together with the most recent Expert Article No 6 by Ron Gilboa, director of InfoTrends’ Production & Industrial Printing Advisory Service. Please don’t miss them as drupa 2016 is just asround the corner.

I won’t highlight the news this week as there are a lot you can browse through yourself. Just don’t miss EFI and Xaar appointments, and also those from KBAIFS, and Heidelberg and Gallus in the UK. Gerold Linzbach is also back at work as CEO of Heidelberg. You’ll find some stunning sales and installations, including web presses from KBA and Manroland Web Systems, and several important pieces of new kit, too… especially from KAMA and Duplo, and Epson with a new range of wide-format inkjet presses.

Newsmaker of the year thus far and as my tailender, goes to UPM Kymmene for its various environmental awards and accolades. Our sincere congratulations to everyone involved.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 14 December 2015
Welcome to another week of news highlights and to Online Features where we have a super little article from ‘mymuesli’ in Passau, Germany lauding the opportunities that Heideberg’s 4D digital inkjet press has provided this rather unique startup company. We have Bobst‘s 125th Anniversary plans, and then HP and KBA with the world’s most productive inkjet web press. You’ll find the latest from drupa 2016, with the second Global Insights Report (in the drupa Newsroom) and from FESPA with Printeriors, the interior design showcase and dedicated conference, which will present a new concept for 2016 dubbed ‘The Print Hotel’, as the show returns to Amsterdam in March.

Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for last Friday, 11 December, includes mention of COP21 in Paris and ends with a caution that the graphics industry needs its associations to keep their members informed and aware, of where the green debate is heading and about how to participate in the conversation.

The news headlines this week contain some really important developments, not least of which appeared on Monday to begin the week on a high note, as HP and KBA debuted the world’s first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S to a couple of hundred key international packaging printers at KBA’s headquarters in Würzburg over a two-day event. This press also features in Friday’s leader to round-off the week, as DS Smith Packaging confirms that it has chosen to become the first packaging specialist to install the world’s first T1100S 2.8 metre wide inkjet web press from HP and KBA, in a sector where digital printing is the fastest growing segment in packaging, with a projected annual growth rate of 17 per cent in a market expected to be worth $19 billion by 2019.

Sappi led the news on Tuesday as it highlighted RLC Packaging and its recent success in the 2015 Red Dot Design Awards, using Sappi’s bright white carton material Algro Design for an exclusive hosiery and shapewear brand range packaging designed by Leo Burnett. You will also find a couple of other Awards mentions: from KBA on Tuesday; then EFI which is one of eight businesses to be honoured this year with the prestigious American Chamber of Commerce in Italy Award. Then we have Xeikon on Wednesday, as Dubai customer Kimoha celebrates a first as digital gains narrow web sector recognition at the recently held 35th FINAT Label Awards.

On Wednesday Heidelberg leads with the first of its drupa 2016 announcements, and reveals that it will exhibit the digitised future of the print media industry under the motto ‘Simply Smart’ and the biggest event in 2016; and then on Thursday it follows through with the second announcement on its plans to showcase ‘Smart Integration”, described as the next stage in automated print media production at next year’s event.

Although there are only 25 news articles again this week, you will find several really good and important announcements if you work your way through them carefully, including the Xaar Plc on Friday, as it reveals that Chris Morgan, the former key and very senior HP executive with a strong background in global marketing and general management and impressive track record, is to join the Xaar Board from January 2016. As with CEO Doug Edwards, Chris should be a great addition who is set to make his mark in Xaar’s future and the world of inkjet.

The tailender serves to remind you that the Festive Season and Christmas is drawing ever-closer and the major holiday season closures and exodus in the Southern Hemisphere, so there will only be one more e-News update before I also take a well-earned break until mid-January, when the industry should once again be under way following all the various interruptions and closures. If you are closing and disappearing during the week ahead, then I wish you Seasons’ Greetings wherever you are, and a very Happy Christmas and Happy New Year in 2016.

That’s it until next week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

ValueCheck! — Print sink!.001

Open letter from the German Digital Printing Forum spokesman Andreas Weber to all who should take care!

Dear friends of the Digital Printing Forum community,
dear friends of printed communication!

Since the beginning of 2014, we had much to criticize:

  1. The print industry communicates poorly, not to say lousy … all are more concerned with themselves than with customers and markets. (The only ones who benefit from a good market communication, the online printers grow strong and profitable, succeed in B2B, also thanks to Bernd Zipper, who is doing a good trade-communication via beyondprint.de).
  2. Among the manufacturers / suppliers for digital printing technologies are plenty of so-called “managers” in the lead position of the 1st and 2nd levels, who excel as a dilettante — and you should quickly throw them out what is already happening in part (bye bye, Armando) …
  3. Publishers as well as agencies don’t believe in print and don’t know how to use digital printing in a proper way. And it will be worse rather than better (except for Calvendo and some others!).

And now this bad news (what was to be expected, but still shocking):

Innovation Primus Xerox loses its core business digital printing machines in the second quarter of 2014, almost one-third of sales.  — Ouch, that is in the billions of US-Dollars!

Who thinks gloating now, haha, your own fault, should bear in mind that this loss of revenue is not collected at Xerox from other manufacturers. [See: The Decline of Digital Printing Continues. Is Xerox loose its core business? # value # print http://fb.me/2YGiNTqkY ]

The truth is rather that the gigantic multi-billion-euro investments in digital printing systems are in no economically reasonable proportion to the value creation capabilities of most print shops; thus the proportion of digital printing in the total print volume of the print industry keeps marginal (around 15%) and remains constantly low.

At a glance: On the current situation of the manufacturers in Germany

It is clear that for years hardly a manufacturer did a good job to innovate and develope new markets:

Konica Minolta reached in Germany the pole position (but sold huge amounts of digital printing systems to the customers of the printing industry).

Heidelberg can take a run again and has now (once again) a new “Digital Strategy”, which could indicate success in two to three years.

Ricoh grabs it anyway, but is almost invisible and silent, and in the commercial printing market Ricoh’s success relates to Heidelberg activities who just pander Fuji.

Canon and Océ transform their synergistic success for „shrink art“ and are always invisible and insignificant for the print industry!

HP Indigo stagnant albeit at relatively high level, but suffers from a fatal and lousy market communication on EMEA level and by the HP Group  in total.

Landa is the best „money-collector“ and fund raiser without a deliverable product to serve the market on time.

— The classics like manroland and KBA including her partner Kodak are the only ones who look at themselves to be a champion in digital printing.

— Only in the niche markets there are “Lucky Guys”, such as Xeikon, Dainippon Screen, EFI or Domino.

— BTW: The paper manufacturers have already adjusted their business to declining demand. Especially in digital printing in the so-called office and home printing area, the decline is striking; similar is also expected in the commercial printing segment!

What does that mean?  For you, for us as a digital print forum community plus for all those print service providers?

All of us should quickly modify our behavior and go-to-market approach. Now. Not tomorrow!

We need a disruptive approach to say goodbye to all this above mentioned grievances. Suspected to the market, consumers and companies have to get clear and valuable information to what is possible via breathtaking digital printing services (even in combination with social media).

And last but not least: It must be clear, by facts and emotionally believable that innovative in print communications via digital printing will produce clear benefits and profitable growth in any dimension of a business.

A current example as proof that it still goes: The Swedish group Elanders AB, which grows well with digital printing and innovations over the market average; Elanders Germany’s with its facilities in Waiblingen (close to Stuttgart) is able to expand its digital printing center and conquered in the packaging and in new supply chain markets. [See our Value Check-analyzes!, And the interview with Elanders CEO Magnus Nilsson]

Whoever, therefore, wants to get involved to turn things around, has a good chance.

And can feel free to contact us in digital printing forum. And be sure: Not only the big players like Elanders could belong to winners in the future!

We have launched a series of measures and new projects in the Summer 2014 (keyword Innovation coaching, including ValueCheck! and ValueTalk!). Made for to save what is worth saving about: innovation for the market benefit, coupled with the new go-to-market principles.

Our believe: It is no longer enough only to compensate or correct what is going wrong so far! Be disruptive by innovation!

I look forward to your feedback and messages.
You are welcome to join the Digital Print Forum Initiative and our Group on XING as well.

Best regards from the Gutenberg City, Mainz,

Yours sincerely

Andreas Weber

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Friday 2 May

Welcome to another roundup of news for the past few days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog, and the latest from Heidelberg in Online Features detailing its new generation CombiStar unit, which conditions the dampening solution and ensures constant inking unit temperature control on Heidelberg’s sheetfed litho presses. It is now equipped with more energy-efficient pumps and electronically controlled compressors that cut energy costs by up to 50 per cent, resulting also in a reduction in CO2.

You will also find numerous announcements relating to FESPA Digital and FESPA Fabric in Munich later this month, as well as news of the Inca Digital Summit for Inca users which will take place during FESPA in Munich. There’s more from Xeikon for its upcoming Xeikon Café to be held in Lier, Belgium at the same time; and MPS has announced an Open House in Didam, The Netherlands from 14 – 16 May.

Xerox started the week on Monday with its new Versant 2100 mid-range production press, which will replace the last of its ageing DocuColor family, and enable Xerox to try to regain ground lost to both Ricoh and Konica Minolta with this new – from the ground up platform – which uses a FujiXerox developed print engine and a choice of DFEs, including two powerful 10-bit, 1200dpi EFI Fiery digital front ends, also announced on Monday.

During April, Kemtek and Komori hosted three special Komori Printology H-UV conferences in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. You’ll find a comprehensive report-back on these among Monday’s headlines, as well as news that South Africa’s first Komori H-UV press is to be installed mid-year.

On Wednesday, UPM Kymmene led the news with its Interim Report reflecting a strong First Quarter 2014.

On Thursday/Friday, Kodak’s new CEO Jeff Clarke, announced the creation of a new senior post to bolster his top executive team, with the appointment of Eric-Yves Mahe as Director of Sales Strategy and Operations. Mahe will be responsible for formulating a strategy to drive sales of Kodak’s portfolio of hardware, consumables, software and services. Prior to joining Kodak, Mahe was president for global growth markets at Pitney Bowes. Also on Thursday, Screen announced that it has partnered with Digital Printing Innovations to sell the Screen Truepress Jet W3200UV flatbed printers in the UK. This comes just a week after Ipex Machinery was appointed for the same in Southern Africa, as well as for Screen’s high-speed Truepress inkjet web presses..

Sales and installations this week were led by EFI Vutek with two wide-format GS3250LX Pro LED UV inkjet printers – one hybrid flatbed/roll-to-roll and the second roll-to-roll – both for the same customer; Blanks Printing; Heidelberg UK with a another Suprasetter A52 CTP device for Print Team; and Muller Martini with a Ventura MC book sewing machine with the Tween option for shorter signatures to Mönch in Leipzig. On Tuesday, HP’s first Latex 360 inkjet printer in the UK from CWE went to Press On; while Europe’s largest foiling company, Blockfoil, has installed its fifth Masterwork MK 1060 ST automatic foil stamping press. SPGPrints (formerly StorkPrints) has sold a DSI digital UV-inkjet label press to McLoone. IFS has sold another Horizon B2 folder, this time to Spectrum; and Heidelberg UK with yet another Suprasetter CTP device to Draper Tools’ inplant.

On Wednesday EFI Vutek came back with another double; this time for KDM which has taken two high-speed HS100 Pro UV wide-format inkjet presses. You’ll also find JMB in Johannesburg mentioned, with its MPS flexo press, although installed a year ago it has only just been announced. On Thursday, Concept Communications Group has boosted its multi-channel marketing services with DirectSmile Cross Media version 6; Technique Print Group has strengthened its colour credentials with Prinect Colour Toolbox and a Heidelberg Suprasetter; while Superior Creative is boosting its wide-format capability with an Inca Onset S40i and Fujifilm Uvijet OC inks. To end the week on a high note, Allied Printing Services has ordered two new KBA Rapida 106, six-colour presses for both UV and conventional coating, and with inline colour management for delivery and installation next month.

I think a green tailender this week deserves to go to Arjo Wiggins and Antalis, as they relaunch their new Eco-calculator which makes it easy for customers to communicate their environmental commitment.

I think that’s about it again for this one again shorter week. Until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Thursday 17 April

Welcome to another roundup of news for the past week, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog.

Rather a short week this week, due to the Easter long weekend in most countries, and another short week ahead, too. Therefore, I shall also try keep it brief this time.

Lots of good pre-FESPA news for this year’s Digital and Fabric events which take place in Munich from 20 to 23 May; as well as from Xeikon for its planned Xeikon Cafe on Packaging Innovations to be held at its premises in Lier, Belgium, at the same time – from 20 to 22 May. Then there’s Sign & Digital UK which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, UK from 29 April until 1 May; Metpack in Essen, Germany from 6 to 10 May; and the really big one which many have been waiting for will be Interpack in Düsseldorf, Germany from 8 to 14 May. Don’t miss KBA and the Frog King leading the headlines on Wednesday! On the other side of the pond, International Sign Expo will also take place in Orlando from 23 to 23 April.

In addition to the above, on Thursday, Muller Martini issued an invitation to attend its 50th anniversary Open House at its new web printing Print Technology Centre in Maulburg, Germany, on 6 and 7 May, so we have a very busy month ahead of us to look forward to in the Merry month of May!. And although it is a little more than two years away, you will find the latest article relating to drupa 2016 from Andreas Weber in our drupa 2016 Newsroom, featuring an exclusive talk with Sabine Geldermann, drupa’s new director at Messe Düsseldorf.

Breaking news this week from EFI on Thursday, when the company revealed its latest financial results and a record first quarter, followed by its latest acquisition, in Europe for a change. On Tuesday, KBA subsidiary KBA-MePrint AG, announced the appointment of Sven Michael as its new CEO, and an internal promotion, which is always nice to hear. On Thursday, Sappi Europe SA announced the appointment of Stephen Blyth as its new Chief Financial Officer from 1 July 2014, and once again, a promotion from within.

Another major announcement this week came from Kodak and Manroland Web Systems as they inked an Authorised Reseller Agreement for integrated high-speed Kodak Prosper S-Series inkjet systems, whereby Manroland Web Systems now offers inkjet upgrades and makes variable printing even more attractive and accessible for the newspaper market. Kodak Prosper S30 heads with Stream inkjet technology run at full web offset production speeds. You’ll find links to another four related articles in the announcements made on Thursday.

As for the most recent sales and installations this week, don’t miss Screen on Monday with a Truepress Jet W1632UV in The Netherlands at Aelen & van Leeuwen; Screen again on Tuesday with a Truepress Jet 520 at Baumer AG in Switzerland; and then UKP Worldwide in the UK, with a Ricoh Pro C751 digital press. On Wednesday, Nela disclosed several recent installations for automated plate production systems for newspapers in Germany, Switzerland and Norway; and TG Print & Design in Woolwich Arsenal, London pushes into the ultra-high quality market with a LumeJet S200 inkless digital printing system. Newcastle, Australia print company WHO, has installed a new Heidelberg SX52 press; and Danish company Skanket has expanded its capacity with a second MPS EF UV flexo press. On Thursday to complete the week on a high note, Liverpool-based company S Barber is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with the installation of a Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 74-5.

In Online Features, you will also discover Pim Print in The Netherlands, which has successfully adopted the Callas pdfToolbox Server, the workflow package that some consider to be only suitable for larger companies.

The tailender this week goes to Antalis South Africa (Monday), as the company scooped two awards from Kodak. The Outstanding Performance of Workflow Sales, and the Outstanding Performance Processless Plate Sales in the EAMER Region. The awards were presented to Ronnie Louw, Antalis’ regional manager Western Cape in Istanbul, Turkey. At the same event, Kodak also named Korozo as its first Certified Partner in Turkey, Middle East and Africa for Kodak Flexcel NX Plates.

I think that’s about it for this week, so until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
