“I remember the print business in the night, then I can’t sleep anymore!“ — I would have also approved this statement formulated based on night thoughts by Heinrich Heine until recently. But: Thought and check helps. And it succeeds with a multi perspectival #Think!Paper vision.

Status quo

To bring the trends reliably, it is not easy.

One thinks first of high-profile measurement via tradeshows. But: For example the highlights of topics, as well as the nomenclature of Messe Düsseldorf for the drupa as a worldwide leading trade fair of the print industry are naturally constructs, to attract as many and new exhibitors.

Fairs offers therefore do not fully reflect the relevant trends that characterise the print industry.

As well, the common market research and trend reports not leading target, are effective as an indicator of future investment behavior of established printing companies there always readily applied, speculative, and no more than.

Meta trends

The print industry is always innovation-driven. At the time, it was always to the enrichment and enhancement of the existing possibilities. Today everything is different. And above all no longer linear. A rethink is imperative:

  1. Disruptive renewal of pre-media processes (template-free), with the aim of flexible and in real time to be able to print data of any kind.
  2. Smart print production: automation of processes from printing the delivery up to the go-to-market of printers, including digital supply chain management.
  3. #hyperpersonalization Blockchain, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and media across dialogical communication scenarios.

BusinessModel trends

The top issue, at the latest since the existence of digital printing, is the business model change for printers. There are two major developments:

  • Polarization in the services market – smart factories (with focused portfolio/commodity offers) vs. High-tech manufacturers (with myriad niche applications and highest innovation). But beware: Both areas fertilize or interpenetrate each other, such as in an iterative cycle. Best to understand, when you see how CIMPRESS developed.
  • Custom configuration of modular composed, ubiquitous production equipment. –Example: CADIS engineering.

Technology trends

The trends in the use of relevant technologies assign three essential aspects:

  1. Unbelievable, but true: The market for print solutions (technology + production + commercial) is greater than commonly portrayed many times. The ecosystem printing industry is broad and is a three-digit billions alone in Germany. (Note: the exact numbers are set forth in the trade magazine printing market).
  2. Almost 2/3 of the total revenues generated by a few hundred industrialized printing factories.
  3. Growth areas are proving to be doing differently than previously forecast to: E.g. for inkjet printing are up on book printing in the substitution of Offsetproduktionen, but above all in the toner printing systems. Important: ‘Inkjet-to-Go’ inspires new applications outside of the print industry, directly from their customers.

A new orientation requires the success in the business of print and print using, driven by the creativity and courage. This, it is important to distinguish:

Inhibiting factors

  • An elaborate market research that focuses only on investments in hard – and software, to venture guesses based and relevant requirements of the market does not see.
  • Events of all kinds, which are vertically oriented, speak almost monolithic on the manufacturer issues and relate the use of their products.
  • Persistently insufficient, no longer contemporary industry communication, which all too often hawked misperceptions and this causes confusion.

Acceleration factors

  • Focus on new forms of go-to market of printing companies, touting the benefits of print for the digital age, and no longer the processing techniques for the production of print.
  • Pro active, social, business-driven discourse with potential new clients that already have come to pass on the digital transformation journey and for the print can become the ‘hidden champion’.
  • More experiments and pioneering venture, break rules and through relevant content and good stories inspired by a change of perspective on a broad front and fascinate.

The high-tech group of Xerox / PARC enters California Palo Alto new ways in ‘Artificial intelligence’ (AI) with his think-tank and development forge. The next year a AI-software architecture should be ready for the market the company to automatically create offers and future documents of all kinds. The whole thing is so topical, there is still no official product name for it.

“Currently we are in the beta and put our new AI solution also within the own group in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom”, says Elisabeth Rochman, Director of innovation, strategy and communication at Xerox in London.

In focus: knowledge workers

Targets are knowledge workers to automate document creation with AI for Xerox primarily in all areas of industrial enterprises, government agencies and organizations. “We go beyond now far scanning and routing of documents, and other ConnectKey functionalities of the Xerox workplace assistants, learning technologies provide the basis for success by most modern deep”, so Rochman next.

It is important to be maximum productive knowledge workers so that they can best accomplish their important duties in complex environments. It is especially critical for knowledge workers to be able to look outside the box and to be able to identify additional information that may be important for their own work in large and complex organizations.

In this mammoth task, Xerox can rely on a 30-year expertise of PARC in natural language processing and is a pioneer in “natural language generation” to take over. Xerox dominates already automatic translations and language input systems for knowledge workers, as well as in the future dialogue systems for field workers in the repair use.

The direct or indirect encounter with artificial intelligence (AI) nobody can escape. For business as private — industry 4.0, medical technology, nursing, Smartphone, autonomous car, smart TV, or in the games sector, we all use AI or benefit.

AI is not a new invention. This research since the 1950s. Starting point is less a ‘thinking machine’, as rather basically programs that can do a task independently, would be necessary for the typically human intelligence. Meanwhile high computing performance as IBM Watson can faster do the AI as a human being. Primarily involves the automation of intelligent behavior and machine learning. In addition to U.S. companies, the strongest driving force is China, with investments of the Government of more than $ 50 billion. The German Government wants to just provide 300 million euros.

Very easily accessible, AI is transformed into our everyday lives such as via Amazon Polly — a text-to-speech service, the texts of all kinds in realistic speech output, so that applications are speaking and whole new categories of voice-enabled products in dozens of languages with a Variety of lifelike voices can be developed, as well as chatbots and the various language assistants by Google, Apple and Amazon.

The big shift

“The special and new at AI — we call it ‘ the big shift’ — is that we need no more area experts to write the rules, instead we need many data points and machine learning algorithms, which themselves derive from the rules of the data sets”, says Rochman. Creativity, intuition, and instinctively correct action in combination with deep-learning are important when it comes to acceptance and interaction between machines and people.

To use the Xerox-AI solution according to Rochman requires no special learnings: “users always have full control and sovereignty. Our AI software architecture is designed so that individual is defined, what degree of intensity makes the most sense“.

AI is the most important branch of modern and future informatics. Four key areas are addressed and networked: Emotionalization, complex tasks, learning and social interaction. The goal: radically simplify the world by an intelligent interface to all offers.

The Xerox/PARC perspective is: artificial intelligence can learn, make assumptions, adapt and respond to unpredictable behavior, and thus make the best decision each with the user and this is more or less in real time. While emotions of the user to be perceived and considered them in the interaction. The Xerox AI architecture itself in this sense as a reasonable and credible partners of interaction, to communicate with the people and to learn from each other.

PARC

AI has top priority in the think tank and the development forge PARC. CEO Dr. Tallon Kash wrote a readable paper on the role and importance in the June 2018.

AI not as a product, but as a service

PARC developments, everything already since 2002 follows the principle of open innovation. With respect to AI, the man-machine collaboration that means best through ‘ human-centered innovation services’ to make. In this respect a Xerox-AI solution should be not seen according to Rochman as opaque black box. Rather, the constant transparency in the foreground stand for Xerox to build maximum confidence and to sustainably maintain.

Ideally, this can be done for example by that algorithms themselves explain. Striking words: AI can be used to make AI and to meet people.

Accordingly, PARC researchers working to create a common ground between humans and AI. “Has to do with traditional AI, in which everything according to predetermined, fixed rules must be our development of less. Therefore is not a product, but as understanding service”AI at Xerox, clarifies Rochman. And added: “Our AI architecture is capable of the people, to follow his habits and his thinking, to serve as a qualified solution and service partner.”

The flexibility and simplicity in the interfacing with connectors is also essential to create diverse interfaces. Relevant, high-quality data and networking are the fuel for AI. Here is Xerox not yet decided, whether itself or through third parties offered the interfacing.

My take: off to new shores! Because AI’s head thing!

With the new AI solution, Xerox has the chance to reinvent itself and to raise knowledge work to a new level. Ultimately, one must pass to the pure language assistance services providers up front to play with. This can succeed, if you manage from Xerox to use existing customer and network structures to include AI in the most diverse areas of application.

Just for the digital transformation of the core markets of Xerox — business communication and the professional print industry —, AI is the key factor. In dialogue with AI-automatically generated data that digital can be printed in real time, and using must be no bold vision, but should soon become a reality. Until then, there may be a continue or stony path should appear, but in my view does not shy away from the Xerox. Creativity is not only an important facet of AI, but also becomes the driver of future marketing success for Xerox.

ValueCheckLensing ENG.001

“After four months using the subscription model, we can safely say we made the right decision!” — Robert Dembinski, Managing Director of Lensing Druck, Dortmund/Germany. — Photo: Heidelberg

By Andreas Weber, Head of Value  |  German Version

Can you instantly make a successful printing business even better? You can if you have the courage to try something new. “When I joined Lensing Druck in Dortmund in the fall of 2017, we were planning to invest in new presses. We ended up doing far more than that, though, and it was a good move,” recalls Managing Director Robert Dembinski.

Lensing Druck had previously focused on maintaining its competitiveness for the benefit of customers, whose main criteria when ordering print products are delivery time and price. “When we heard Heidelberg had something new in the pipeline, we were curious but also somewhat skeptical,” Dembinski explains. “We found it hard to imagine what the subscription model from Heidelberg would involve and weren’t sure it would work,” he adds.

Dembinski studied business management, so the print shop business represents a change of career path. He was actually intending to develop a digital strategy with his colleagues, including new digital offerings to provide customers with a more comprehensive service and open up new business opportunities. The fact that the subscription model from Heidelberg provides new digital tools to transform both production management and business management step by step very much appealed to him and his way of thinking.

Lower costs and higher efficiency

Experts from Heidelberg started by analyzing the actual situation to evaluate the efficiency and productivity of Lensing Druck’s existing presses. This revealed that the assignment of presses needed to be optimized and also that costs were very high, especially for shorter runs. It therefore very quickly became apparent that an increase in efficiency and productivity was both necessary and feasible. The strategy adopted was to skip a generation when replacing the existing presses. A Heidelberg XL-106 9-P-L took over from two older presses – a Heidelberg CD 105-P+L and a KBA Rapida 106 8-P. At the same time, the company switched to the pay-per-use subscription model – including the Prinect Workflow and above all the Heidelberg Performance Plus consulting service – with a view to boosting efficiency and cutting operating costs.

“To be honest, no longer owning a press and being reliant on a single supplier for everything, including consumables, takes some getting used to,” Dembinski admits. “After four months using the subscription model, however, we can safely say we made the right decision! Even in this short space of time, we’ve significantly improved the overall efficiency of our presses and our production volume is already over 20 percent higher than the target level contractually agreed with Heidelberg,” he continues.

Heidelberg Subscription Model.png

Assistant ensures absolute transparency

Lensing Druck is impressed by the clear and neat structure of the subscription model from Heidelberg and also its absolute transparency. “As I see it, the Heidelberg Assistant is the key component and the brains behind the entire model. All KPIs can be accessed in real time, as can the service status, industry benchmarks, and much more besides,” Dembinski comments.

The Heidelberg Assistant is used at various levels in the Lensing Druck hierarchy – from senior management to operations/pressroom managers and purchasing staff. Its webcast function is also utilized for monthly meetings with the Heidelberg team to discuss the project status. This results in further new ideas and optimizations being identified over time, the ultimate aim being not only to meet the joint productivity targets but to exceed them by as large a margin as possible.

Another important thing in Dembinski’s eyes is that print shop staff have responded very positively to the digital transformation using Heidelberg Subscription. “Switching to the new press has motivated our staff, because it shows we’re committed to print despite a difficult market. Thanks to the data we obtain from the press and the monthly review, we can support our employees in all aspects of their work and enable them to make progress,” he stresses. Various charts showing the monthly data and statistics are also displayed right next to the press for everyone to see.

“We made the right decision!”

“After four months using the subscription model, we can safely say we made the right decision!” sums up Dembinski. Heidelberg Subscription enables him to incorporate the presses in Lensing Druck’s own digital strategy. And – crucially – the subscription model makes it easier to develop other applications such as dynamic pricing, dynamic planning and procurement, real-time information for customers, reliable and transparent costings, and predictive monitoring for optimum maintenance processes.

Dembinski is also hoping the digital transformation of the entire company will improve Lensing Druck’s image, especially with customers who have experience in digital marketing. End-to-end digital order processing is an absolute must for such customers. To raise the print shop’s digital profile and coincide with the new digital portfolio, the post of CDO (Chief Digital Officer) was created in September 2018.

My take: When it works, it really works!

The example of Lensing Druck and Robert Dembinski proves that when something works, it really works! Print has arrived in the digital age and can hold its own – especially if decision-makers and staff at print shops accept, understand, and embrace the digital transformation and ensure its beneficial further development. Being one of the first to use Heidelberg Subscription very quickly paid off for Lensing Druck, and it will have a dynamic and stimulating effect on the company’s future development. What’s more, print specialists, commercially astute business managers, and digital marketing professionals are all impressed. What more do you want?

ADDENDUM of 11 July 2019

Subscription contract extended to logistics for consumables

In the summer of 2019, Lensing Druck handed over the management of the entire logistics chain of consumables to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen in order to optimize inventory management significantly.

„Is artificial intelligence set to become art’s next medium?“

Christies verlautbarte mit Stolz: „Is artificial intelligence set to become art’s next medium? AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high estimate — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. The portrait in its gilt frame depicts a portly gentleman, possibly French and — to judge by his dark frockcoat and plain white collar — a man of the church.

The work appears unfinished: the facial features are somewhat indistinct and there are blank areas of canvas. Oddly, the whole composition is displaced slightly to the north-west. A label on the wall states that the sitter is a man named Edmond Belamy, but the giveaway clue as to the origins of the work is the artist’s signature at the bottom right. In cursive Gallic script it reads:

Image © Obvious

This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an artificial intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the hammer in the Prints & Multiples  sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy  sold for an incredible $432,500, signalling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.”

The Big Shift

My Take: Auf zu neuen Ufern!

My Take: Wenn’s läuft, dann läuft’s!

Was will man mehr?

#Think!Paper #PDA Sommer Weber.001

Peter Sommer, Member of the Elanders Board, and Andreas Weber, Head of Value, met in Waiblingen, near Stuttgart, to discuss their ideas. Their meeting resulted in the #Think!Paper initiative.

#Think!Paper — Edition 1, Volume 1. | German Version

“We are launching an initiative that highlights the importance of print not only in but also for the digital era. What counts is not what we do or how we do it, but rather why print delivers sustainable success. The focus needs to be on the unique benefits that professional print production delivers. And that applies whether you’re looking at the past, present or future!” – Peter Sommer and Andreas Weber

A special kind of summit on print and transformation: Peter Sommer, Member of the Elanders Board, and Andreas Weber, Head of Value, met in Waiblingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. This European city is a major hub for the most dynamic solutions portfolio for print and demonstrates with high volumes and strong profits just how big a contribution print (based on digital printing) can make in the digital age.

“I find it astounding and completely incomprehensible how poorly print is portrayed – especially by the print media industry itself. Why is that?” asks Sommer. The meeting picked out core issues that led to the establishment of the Think!Paper initiative. These points also represent the key thrust of the Think!Paper activities, offering a constructive and critical basis for further discussion.

Taking stock

The print media industry is underselling itself and taking far too little interest in what is going on elsewhere. It likes to keep to itself. There is usually little more than speculation about the challenges set by the digital age. Many positive aspects go unnoticed, and there is a failure to grasp the opportunities that change could bring.

Core arguments

Status quo: The industry has built its own funeral pyre and is fervently stoking the fire beneath it. However, the prospects for print shops in the digital age are far better than the image the industry is presenting, both within and beyond its own ranks.

The mistake being made is that print shops and print buyers are following false prophets.

Clarification: Print is a perfected medium with a pedigree, potential and the capacity for profitable new business.

Consider the facts:

  • Print represents an exceptionally valuable form of communication – made by people, for people!
  • Improved functionality is exponentially increasing the benefits that print offers in the digital age.
  • Print isn’t just about duplicating data – it can package text, images and special effects in a very special, highly personal format that moves people profoundly.
  • As a communication medium, print has the most lasting effect and can therefore be used to great advantage.
  • As part of the marketing mix, print is constantly raising the bar and creating new potential for customer relationships in the most effective ways possible.
  • And, when it comes to transformation – if anything has to change, then it is how print is handled as a premium product.

Paradigm: Print was, is and will remain an indispensable catalyst for cultural, social and economic developments. That is something ‘digital leaders’ such as Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple have long since recognized. Indeed, these giants of the digital age are highly adept at using print to their benefit.

Plea: Print will continue to be a winner in the digital era, if it can strike the right balance between what is useful on a technical level and people’s real needs. The facts are on the table. Now is the time to communicate them clearly and comprehensibly! Let’s put the beauty and diversity of print in the right light!

Aims and measures

We are kicking off creative conversations that cut to the chase with a clear focus. This is how we want to present a vivid and forward-looking picture that highlights effective solutions for using print in all types of communication where it can harness its full potential and strengths.

Revealing: Great conversation about the Heidelberg Assistant at the pharmaceutical service provider D.O.G. GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany. Photo: Heidelberg

By Andreas Weber, Head of Value | German Version

“For me, Heidelberg Assistant is a tool that is very important to our digitization strategy, one that is indispensable for the future.”— Andre Gass, IT specialist and senior executive at D.O.G. GmbH in Darmstadt

Managing processes with the aid of digital communications creates transparency in real time for complex technical procedures and takes industrial print production to a whole new level. This was the most important insight gleaned from the follow-up meeting with D.O.G. GmbH in Darmstadt.

The aim of the meeting was to examine the use of the Heidelberg Assistant as a central digital management platform in a highly specialized print shop. D.O.G. was represented at this meeting by senior executive Andre Gass, who, as a qualified IT specialist, deals primarily with the Heidelberg Assistant and intelligent data analysis for the operational and technical management of the print shop. Tom Oelsner, Head of Innovation at the Heidelberg Digital Unit, also attended the meeting on behalf of Heidelberg.

Information box

Precision and reliability based on flexibility and innovation

D.O.G. GmbH is a family business and has specialized in work for customers in the German and European pharmaceutical industry and the cosmetic and airline sectors since it was founded in 1996. The solutions in its portfolio include sophisticated print products and services such as packaging inserts, booklets, standard labels, piggyback labels, outserts, folding cartons, labels for folding cartons, design and consulting services, logistics, and engineering. Everything at D.O.G. is genuine precision work, which is monitored by customers through audits. Founder and Managing Director Johann Gass has ushered in a new era so that his company can meet the requirements of the digital age in the best way possible. Three of his children have also joined the team. D.O.G. runs production operations at two sites in western Darmstadt and has been using the Heidelberg Assistant since June 2018.

The Heidelberg Assistant is a universal web platform that allows various users to digitally manage all the relevant aspects of a print shop. These aspects include, for instance, the printing technology in use (including performance measurement and predictive monitoring), support, purchasing through an eShop, and administration. The combined use of Heidelberg IDs and customer-/employee-specific dashboards supports personalized access to the system and allows companies to integrate all specific components in a customized and scalable way. The Heidelberg Cloud ensures the best possible connectivity and provides an optimum means of sharing data and knowledge. After being launched initially in Germany, Switzerland, the USA, and Canada, the project was rolled out in Japan in July 2018. And there are more countries to come. The platform has an open design and can even integrate products from other manufacturers. The basic version is available to all customers free of charge.

Useful to customers from day one!

“Following the launch with around 30 customers in December 2017, it is clear that industrial customers with an affinity for services and cutting-edge equipment draw particular benefit from the Heidelberg Assistant. Right now, there are already over 200 customers using the Assistant. There’ll be 500 by the end of the year,” Oelsner states confidently. The aim is to make both the platform and Heidelberg Cloud meet the highest security standards.

Oelsner sees his collaboration with IT specialist Andre Gass as the perfect opportunity to put the platform through its paces and make sure it continues to evolve. Thanks to the modular design of the Assistant, new customer requirements can be integrated as add-ons as necessary. A new release goes live every three months. “The capacity utilization is very high right from the start. There are many customers who use the Heidelberg Assistant several times a week, some even daily,” explains Oelsner.

This high intensity of use appears to be rather consistent across the individual markets, although market penetration has progressed furthest in Switzerland: “The Assistant offers the widest range of applications for customers with machines connected to the Heidelberg Cloud. In Switzerland, around 50 percent of this customer group already uses the Assistant, mainly to boost productivity and get advance warning of potential failures.” The feature in highest demand appears to be the service status, which, thanks to its traffic-light system, can be checked at a glance.

The ability to customize the platform makes it particularly appealing to users – this even includes assigning names to machines and photos of installed machines and print shop employees.

Oelsner explains: “It’s really important to us that we can put the customer at the very heart of what we do. That means we make it possible for our customers to give their staff exactly the support they need for their respective tasks. For instance, employees can select the events for which they would like to receive a messenger or email notification. “Do you still use the telephone or do you use the Heidelberg Assistant?” That has to be the question we ask customers – because they can now track service processes, spare part deliveries, predicted failures, and productivity 24/7 without having to make a single call.

The many benefits of digital communication and smart automation

Managing maintenance operations has to be a key focal point for industrial print shops, as Gass is well aware. The Assistant automatically generates a maintenance calendar, which helps customers find the best way to incorporate various machines into production planning. After all, downtimes lower productivity and so, in principle, should not occur unless scheduled. Maximizing the availability of production systems is important, first and foremost, in giving print shops the flexibility they need when plans change because the customer has moved a deadline. Workflows must always be designed to achieve maximum productivity.

“Digital communication with Heidelberg Service, either through the Assistant’s messaging system or the eCall functions [for instance, the machine automatically reports and documents signs of faults], really takes a lot of weight off our shoulders. Nothing gets lost, and all processes are always running at optimum level,” Gass explains. He appreciates the platform’s clear structure, transparency, and user-friendliness.

“Our core values of reliability, commitment to quality, flexibility, and innovation are fully reflected in the Assistant, which helps us considerably when it comes to doing the best possible job in the interest of our customers,” adds Gass.

Gass worked very closely with the Heidelberg Assistant while preparing for the installation of a new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106-2-P. “We take a very methodical and structured approach to everything we do, and always push ourselves to the limit when it comes to performance and quality. This is because customer requirements, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, are extremely high.” Gass has been very impressed by the way Heidelberg makes the premium technology of its hardware and software both transparent and simple to use.

“We’re really benefiting from everything the Assistant is making possible because reaching a high level of digitization is very much a priority, not just for us but also for our customers. This is because one of our core missions is to create the best possible interfaces to our customers’ highly diverse systems,” explains Gass. Orders are sent to the print shop digitally and can then be managed and monitored on an entirely digital basis and optimized using process management where appropriate.

As a result, it may become necessary to create an interface between the Heidelberg Assistant and the ERP system at D.O.G. for future use. Oelsner adds: “A system connection is already being tested for error messages. This allows the customer’s system to send an XML file to the Assistant for electronic processing without an employee having to fill out a new form.”

However, it is important to make full use of the wide range of options already available first, primarily with regard to the platform’s add-on options, and particularly those relating to performance measures. The basic version of the Assistant provides the customer with KPIs. Additional options for more detailed analysis can be agreed in a separate contract.

Important outcomes: Speed, error prevention, convenience functions

Gass has been impressed by the integration of the Heidelberg eShop, which is tailored to the specific needs of his company: “We have preconfigured shopping lists, and it only takes a few clicks to put together the right order. The eShop range adapts to our requirements and selects the consumables we actually need. Incorrect orders are now a thing of the past. Even today, the Heidelberg eShop is already designed to work fast.

According to Oelsner, it takes an average of 70 seconds to place an order using shopping lists. In the future, the necessary order volumes will be calculated on a predictive basis using key data from production and the customer will be advised on when to place an order, so that no surplus stock has to be stored in the print shop.

With the exception of a completely autonomous ordering process, which will be available in future configurations of the Assistant, the print shop could not have chosen a more dependable procurement system.

20180906_Bild 1_ HDA-DOG-Weber_L020

Andre Gass, IT specialist and senior executive at D.O.G. GmbH in Darmstadt puts digitization in the focus to strengthen the printing business.

There is another feature of the Assistant that Gass finds particularly practical – users can intervene if necessary, and are not solely reliant on automation. Oelsner goes on to discuss the feedback he’s gotten from many customers: “All kinds of additional documents, such as text, images and video, can be sent to Heidelberg using the service system, even an audio file of a rattling sound, which would be difficult to explain otherwise.”

For Gass, this represents a significant improvement to communication and a noticeable increase in the speed and quality of troubleshooting. He also believes it is important the system documents what it does, so as to create transparency for the management team.

Gass summarizes his experience with the Assistant: “For me, Heidelberg Assistant is a tool that is very important to our digitization strategy, one that is indispensable for the future. What’s more, everything we’re familiar with in terms of modern digital communication through social media in our private lives is also offered by the Assistant for our business matters: Messenger and chat functions, notifications, and much more. Everything is recorded automatically in timelines and can be researched later on.”

My take – times are changing. And that’s perfect!

In the print business, there is still a lot that can be done much better as part of a smart digitization strategy driven by IT expertise. This is particularly true when tech manufacturers, like Heidelberg in the case of the Heidelberg Assistant, create innovative, scalable and interactive platforms that print shops can use in structured, personalized and creative ways.

At D.O.G. in Darmstadt, they aren’t just aware of this – they’re actively integrating it into their new business strategy, making it an important part of this new era in the company’s management. This is all the more fitting, as D.O.G. aims for the highest level of quality and precision based on its clearly defined company values.

Digital communication at every step in the industrial print manufacturing process is a must if you want to take a modern approach to business operations and the concerns of end customers.

If all necessary business communication between the tech manufacturer and the customer in the printing industry can be optimized to such a degree, then everyone wins – with mutual benefits, profitable growth and sustainable development in business activities! —Andreas Weber

Aufschlussreich: Praxisgespräch zum Heidelberg Assistant beim Pharma-Dienstleister D.O.G. GmbH in Darmstadt

Von Andreas Weber, Head of Value | English Version

GmbH in Darmstadt.

Wichtige Effekte: Schnelligkeit, Fehlervermeidung, Komfortfunktionen

My Take: Die Zeiten ändern sich.

The status quo

Print in context with digital transformation

Much is mixed up or misrepresented in the discussions regarding “digital transformation” in the context of print. Success factors and new potentials are hardly achievable. At least, it certainly does not have to be mentioned that print production is a 100 percent data-driven and thus digital process, with constantly new and unique applications. But, where is the beef?

Challenge: Solutions available — and who knows?

Communication about a product is as important as the product or service itself.

What if there are highly complex technical solutions that could enable customers or customers’ customers to better manage and profit from the process of digital innovation and the necessary transformation?

Learn from communication errors

When it comes to understanding, informing, convincing, finding acceptance or even influencing opinions — be it employees, customers, potential customers, shareholders or even the media for the public — all of us obviously did not everything right but probably too much wrong.

Current sales figures and stock market prices on a low/declining level speak for itself.

The solution: #Think!Paper

Based on an exchange of views, knowledge and experience, we have developed an innovative approach to business communication, which itself is the best example of innovation and transformation.

While the well-known form of the static ’White Paper’ points out problems in the existing and designs possible solutions, the newly developed format of the #Think!Paper offers a dynamic form of expert communication via conversation based on perpetuum mobile-effects:

We use our profound knowledge to gain insights in an ongoing dialogue, to question things wisely, and to clarify in dialogue with others. Transformation can only succeed if we align communication with human-to-human relationships.

How does it work?

Think!Paper appears as a novel, cross-media, interactive publication designed as a sequel and compatible with the essence of transformation: research, analysis, assessment, insights and recommendations are always in flux.

Updates will be done by the publishers / authors in the team with selected-qualified partners as contributors.

In addition to a strong social media presence, the centerpiece is the ValueBlog, with excerpts appearing in the DRUCKMARKT (PDF magazines and print editions). As a special edition of the DRUCKMARKT collections, the Think!Paper is available to partners and subscribers for individual use.

Selected partners are actively involved and part of the conversation: Technology manufacturers and users who demonstrably contribute to the transformation of and with print for the digital age.

Together we reduce complexity and create clarity — promised!

The most important topics at a glance:

  • What is actually meant by “digital transformation”?
  • What role does print play?
  • Which benefits are available?
  • Where do we stand (Best Practice)?
  • Where do we have to go (Strategy & Outlook)?
