Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 14 October 2016

Welcome to another roundup with 33 news articles posted during the past week, plus Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog added on Friday: ‘An Environmental Declaration for Print’, which this week briefly explains the circular economy and that the graphics industry could be making a massive satement about its contribution to this. Please don’t miss it. On Friday, UPM Raflatac and Labelexpo Americas announced they had partnered to provide a solution for exhibitors to responsibly manage their waste at the show, as well as ongoing.

In our Technology Guides section you will find the 10th article in this new Wild Format series for 2016/2017 called ‘The Art and Science of Very Fine Drops’ by Sonja Angerer, complete with an illustrated PDF which can be downloaded. In Online Features this week we have a report in Chapter 02 from the recent Gallus Innovation Days in Switzerland, which saw the successful world premiere of the new Gallus Labelmaster machine platform for label and packaging printing; and then in Chapter 07, two additions from Andreas Weber, head of Value, with a commentary entitled Print is a dynamic growth market. But print doesn’t sell itself!’; and then a summary analysis which examines the ‘Prospects for adding value with print’. Illustrated PDFs of both can be downloaded.
Upcoming events mentioned this week include K 2016 in Düsseldorf from 19 to 26 October, from Mimaki on Monday; and on Thursday, InPrint in Milan from 15 to 17 November.

Monday’s headlines were led by UPM at WPE in Vienna last week, and then on Tuesday, news from Manroland Web Systems with the launch of its new 16-page Geoman e:line newspaper printing press at the event; and Kodak with faster CTP for newspapers. Tuesday saw Canon SA (and Europe) lead the news with the launch of a new ImageRunner Advance series of A3 colour high-end multifunctional printers. On Wednesday, we had UPM Raflatac in Poland with a new coating line for its Wroclaw factory to meet increased demand for its products; while Thursday saw Mimaki launch a new breakthrough in digital inkjet textile printing with a transportation belt at Viscom Italy, which also took place last week. To round off the lead headlines on Friday, System Brunner announced that its Instrument Flight has received a worldwide first ‘G7 Press Control System Certification’.

Orders and installations during the past week included Hybrid Software with the 500th seat of its PACKZ to Fusion Flexo in the UK; then Panaprint in the USA with System Brunner and QuadTech. On Tuesday, Gallus with the 400th ECS 340 label press at Relieves Egara in Barcelona, Spain; while Vale Press in the UK, will take delivery of a new Stahlfolder BH66 buckle machine in the New Year. On Wednesday, Bokbinderiet Johnsen celebrated its new Muller Martini Diamant MC 60 bookline, a first in Norway, with a customer Open House.

Thursday saw Imprimerie Bailly in France add X-Rite eXact-based colour control; Frisco Printing and Graphics in the USA add Heidelberg’s new Versafire CV; Muller Martini with a Primera MC saddle stitcher with Motion Control for two key customers in Switzerland; and Technotrans in the UK at trade printer Walsh Colour, as it switches to H-UV with three new Komori presses. On Friday, Duplo UK announced deals topping £400,000 from The Print Show at the NEC last week: to QuadGraphics, Latham Direct, and Jones and Brooks. Heidelberg UK revealed that PPS Print has upgraded from Xerox to Versafire CP for its digital printing; and lastly, Flexoshop in the UK now uses Asahi AWP water-washable flexographic plates.

As my tailender for this week: PRP in the UK announced that it has been awarded the contract to manufacture 1200dpi LED print heads for the Kodak NexPress, as the culmination of a successful three-year joint development programme with Kodak.

That’s it for another week, but you will find more if you scroll down carefully.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Consumers associate printed newspapers with waste, but correcting this impression doesn’t seem to be a priority for the newspaper industry.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 07 October 2016

Welcome to another roundup with 28 news articles posted during the past week, plus Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog added on Friday, entitled Newspapers and Change. In her opening paragraph Laurel states: ‘Newspaper publishers should be doing much more to counter perception that print is bad for the environment. Consumers associate printed newspapers with waste, but correcting this impression doesn’t seem to be a priority for the newspaper industry. This has to change, even though publishers may have other things on their minds like the precipitous decline in print sales.’ You can read the rest of the article by using the link in the Verdigris section below.

The latest and No 10 in the series of Wild Format Technology Guides by Sonja Angerer was added this week. Entitled The Art and Science of Very Fine Drops, it explains why Inkjet is unique amongst printing technologies, where there is no other option to print on such a wide varieties of substrates with such efficiency and ease. Enjoy it. You can download an illustrated PDF from the link in the article below.

Upcoming events that feature prominently this week include The Print Show 2016, which opens its doors at the NEC in Birmingham tomorrow. You’ll find news from several exhibitors, including Sawgrass on Tuesday, and Intec on both Thursday and Friday, with the lead article on Friday taken from Gareth Ward at the Print Business, devoted to his take on the show, now in its second year and with an increase in demand for space this time around. It’s on until Thursday 13 October and has some nice offerings.

Domino Digital Printing Solutions will showcase a range of technologies at All4pack 2016 in Paris from 14 to 17 November. The show was previously known as Emballage. On Tuesday, Martin Bailey at Global Graphics led the news, as Global announced it is to chair a new ISO task force for a new PDF production workflow standard that will make it possible to describe what a final printed piece is supposed to look like. Leading the news on Thursday: KBA Report 49 is now available either as a printed version or to download online in multiple languages from KBA using the link in the article. The theme is ‘Print is on the up once more’, as this latest issue takes a closer look at some of innovations unveiled at drupa 2016.

There’s so much more for you is you scroll down, including some nice orders and installations including Ricoh in multiple European countries including France, The Netherlands and Finland; Muller Martini in Ghana; Highcon in Germany; Heidelberg UK, Xeikon with ThermoFlexX also in the UK; IFS with Foliant in the UK, Heidelberg USA, Taopix in Germany for an online platform; and MPS in The Netherlands.

As my tailender this week is Wednesday’s lead article as UPM Raflatac partners on the reforestation project of Jaguari River in Brazil to help protect this vital ecosystem; with a stunning pic to go with it.

My main MacBook’s screen decided to pack up this morning which is rather hampering the way I usually work, so that’s all until next time. Until then. My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Then we have Laurel Brunner back with her latest Verdigris environmental Blog, which this week looks at Plastic Dreams. All of which can be downloaded as PDFs, with almost 40 still to follow over the coming ten months or so.

On Wednesday we had HP Inc announce its acquisition of Samsung’s Printer Business, with the aim of disrupting the copier segment by reinventing and replacing service-intensive copiers with superior multifunction printing technology.
Recent sales and installations successes began on Monday with Manroland Sheetfed at Dongguan Xincai Packaging in China; Tuesday saw Heidelberg at Newnorth Print in the UK with the very latest Stahlfolder KH 82 combination model with Palamides delivery; then Esko in Brazil with the milestone 3000th CDI – a CDI Spark 5080 for trade house Clicheria Blumenau – its fifth Esko CDI.
Among the various articles you will find quite a bit of new kit, including EFI with an enhanced Jetrion for labels; Mimaki with new wide-format inkjet direct sublimation for textiles, combining printing and heating for colour fixation into a single footprint; also HP with a new Latex Printer series at SGIA on Friday.

My tailender for the week from Tuesday’s headlines is the Blog Post relating to the K-Show (the world’s number one event for plastics and rubber) from 19 – 26 October in Düsseldorf: by Chris Winczewski at X-Rite Pantone. Not exactly printing as such, but extremely interesting and related – since X-Rite and Pantone and colour control are so closely related to our own industry, and the K-Show is becoming more relevant as production boundaries become blurred in our fast changing world.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

One of the top exhibitors: Leonhard Kurz at Luxe Pack in Monaco from 21 – 23 September

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 09 September 2016

Welcome to another roundup of news articles posted during the past week. You will find quite a nice selection below, including upcoming appearances at various events led by Leonhard Kurz at Luxe Pack in Monaco from 21 – 23 September (on Monday); Sun Chemical at K 2016 in Düsseldorf from 19 – 26 September (Tuesday); Toray at WAN-IFRA’s World Publishing Expo in Vienna from 10 – 12 October; EFI at Graph Expo in Orlando from 24 – 26 September; and then Industrial Inkjet (Konica Minolta) at Labelexpo Americas in Rosemont from 13 – 16 September (all on Wednesday). Then we have Fujifilm at InPrint 2016 in Milan, from 15 – 17 November; and Spandex at the Print Show from 11 – 13 October at the NEC, Birmingham (on Thursday); and finally AVT and HP Indigo with advanced integration to be shown live for the first time at Labelexpo Americas 2016 (leading the news on Friday).

One article in Online Features not to be missed this week came from Canon South Africa, highlighting the benefits of the South African Disabled Golf Association’s First Swing programme for disabled children, and showcased in action at the Zwartkop Country Club near Pretoria. Please don’t skip it. The four latest Wild Format Technology Guides are also complete, with links below. A key software announcement this week from Esko on Monday, with a new clean-sheet design of ArtPro+ which brings fresh innovation to packaging design and prepress with its native PDF editor. On Thursday you will find the latest additions to the new high performance Select flatbed inkjet series from Fujifilm; while on Friday, FFEI introduces both an extended colour gamut and linerless label production for its hybrid Graphium press, enabling converters to address new sectors digitally.

Of particular interest on an environmental note this week on Wednesday, is Brunel Print which claims to be the first UK printer to make all its production carbon neutral without customers incurring a charge for it. This article is by Gareth Ward at the Print Business. I thought those with an environmental interest ought to see it. This was followed by UPM and leading the news on Thursday, as it retains its industry leader position in the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index for the fifth time in a row. Major sales and installations this week began on Tuesday with Sexton Printing, which expects a 40 per cent increase in productivity with its new Speedmaster XL 75-5+L from Heidelberg; from Healeys, as it meets increased demand for A4 property brochures with an investment in a Horizon landscape bookletmaker; and from York Repro-Graphic as it turns to Asahi’s AWP flexographic plates for fixed colour palette printing – all three are based in the UK. On Wednesday, KBA North America announced a flood of orders and installations for East Coast printing companies; while on Friday to finish the week in style, Fine Print UK is taking the LE-UV route with its latest £1m high-specification Speedmaster XL 75-5 LE-UV investment; while Rotolito Lombarda group has expanded its digital production capabilities with a new HP Indigo 12000 Digital Press in Milan, Italy; KBA announced a large-format Rapida 164 with coater and triple delivery extensi on for Printcenter Eesti in Maardu, Estonia; and lastly: Kase Printing in North America is set to install an automated Stahlfolder TH 82 6/6/4 (debuted at drupa) to complement its two existing Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 presses. There’s a lot more if you scroll down carefully including what SPGPrints is doing in Kufstein, Austria; but as my tailender for this week: Xeikon announced on Friday that it has promoted Filip Weymans who previously served as director segment marketing Labels & Packaging, to vice president marketing at Xeikon. Congratulations Filip on a nice reward for all the effort and hard work.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 July 2016

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 30 selected news articles for the week, plus five new additions to our drupa Newsroom from Elitron, KBA-Flexotecnica, Manroland Sheetfed, and SEI Laser; as well as a new entry in Online Features Downloads from Two Sides, as it publishes the findings of its Global Reach Survey 2016, where you will find the introductory article complete with link to download the complete 15-page findings and report as a PDF.

There will no Verdigris environmental Blog for the next couple of weeks as Laurel Brunner is taking a short break. She will be back during the second half of August. I shall also take a break as news is in very short supply due to the main holiday season in Europe and it has been difficult this past week or so to put together a reasonable selection of good newsworthy stuff each day. As with last week’s key news announcements (Xaar on Monday and Screen Europe on Tuesday) I have drawn on the assistance of Gareth Ward at Print Business UK for two key articles again this week, for the Anton Group and Kodak Inkjet announcement on Wednesday; and then for Xerox and RR Donnelley on Friday, in order to bring you up to date with that.

Other news leaders this week came from HP on Monday, with its plans for Photokina 2016 in Cologne in September. Tuesday was led by Canon Europe as it ships Goloseo children’s books produced at drupa 2016 to South Africa to support the Room to Read Literacy Programme. On Thursday, Two Sides took the lead as it announces availability of its Global Research Survey 2016 in PDF format; and while consumers still value print and paper, there are numerous environmental misunderstandings that persist due to a serious lack of awareness, says Two Sides. Please don’t skip it. The 15-page Report is well worth studying for anyone involved with publishing, print and paper wherever you are.

On Friday, management board chairman and CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Dr. Gerold Linzbach, announced that he will not renew his contract which runs until August 2017. Following a successful turnaround of the company, he will not seek to extend his contract and aims at pursuing new professional challenges and will continue to serve the company until the end of his contractual term, to enable the Supervisory Board time to find a replacement.

You will find some new sales and installations announcements below from Andi Druk in the Netherlands, as it invests in the first Canon Océ and Müller Martini integrated continuous feed inkjet and digital finishing lines for magazine and book production; and also for Manroland Sheetfed in Brazil with another Roland 700 – both on Monday. On Tuesday, Witherbys in London increases automation and output with a new Speedmaster XL 75-6 and automated Stahlfolder CH 56; Inci.Flex in Italy becomes the first to automate its flexo platemaking process with Esko’s new CDI Crystal 5080 XPS flexo platemaker, debuted at drupa. We also have Toppan Forms, which is now the biggest Kodak Prosper Inkjet customer in the world, as it adds a fifth Prosper Stream Inkjet press – a Prosper 6000C; while German commercial printer Nino-Druck made its first steps into the personalised photo market with Taopix at drupa.

On Wednesday we announced that Anton Group UK will be the first in the world to work with the new Kodak Ultrastream printhead shown in tests at drupa. This was followed by corrugated packaging printer Grupondunova in Catalonia, which becomes the first Spanish company to invest in the Inca Onset X large-format inkjet flatbed press, complete with ClinchTech Robotics. Then we had Park Communications in the UK, which has added a four-clamp Horizon BQ470 PUR perfect binder to deliver cost effective fast turnarounds. Thursday saw IBW Industrial Binding in Belgium increase its investment in Muller Martini kit with a new Diamant MC 60 bookline, and an Alegro perfect binder with extremely short changeover times, to use with the new hard-cover line.

#drupa2016: Exceeding All Expectations- Objectif Lune Expands Their Market Position Remarkably

“Global leading print tradeshow, drupa 2016 was an immense success. We exceeded all expectations,” says Didier Gombert, CEO of Objectif Lune (short: OL) on the outcome of #drupa2016.

“The show-motto ‘Touch the future’ encouraged us to notably expand our strategy in becoming a leader for innovative software solutions in the field of interactive business and customer communication,” adds Gombert. Striking really, since drupa traditionally showcases news around print- and paper technology.

The reasons behind OL’s success, according to Gombert: In the digital age we understand how to set print into context in an appropriate manner. The starting points are HTML, CSS and JavaScript, enabling to connect print applications seamlessly to any digital communication process.

OL’s drupa-motto demonstrated their focus: “Simply clever: Turn data into personalised cross-media solutions!” This attracted customers and business partners from around the globe. Partners such as PitneyBowes, Canon, KonicaMinolta and Ricoh, presented a portfolio of OL solutions on their stands, hereby extending to the next level: The Connect concept foresees that all modules of the OL applications portfolio can be linked, allowing for an unobstructed scalability: from user-friendly starter utilization to highly complex expert solutions.

Company background: Objectif Lune (OL) develops simple and effective software in the field of customer communication management. Founded in 1993, Objectif Lune now has over 240 employees worldwide, serving over 20,000 organizations. OL provides global technical support and owns three R&D facilities in Montréal (Canada), The Netherlands, and Australia. OL works hard to make the lives of businesses and workforces, easier. The OL headquarters are in Montreal, Canada.

ValuePublishing Mike Hilton News Review 15072016.002

Canon’s drupa 2016 campaign #unleashprint became a big success and a #1 topic via Social Media.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 15 July 2016

Welcome to this week’s roundup of 36 selected news articles for the week, plus four in our own drupa Newsroom from Agfa, KAMA, Manroland Web Systems, and Sun with BASF, bringing the total to 420. You’ll also find two new entries in Online Features from French daily newspaper Le Figaro, which has grown its business, thanks to KBA waterless printing and a move to Toray MX10 plates. The second article in Chapter 02 highlights e-Commerce, Automation and Cloud for print by Simon Eccles. You will also find it in the drupa Newsroom as well. Somehow this Expert Article in the pre-drupa series failed to reach us and I guess became lost somewhere in the ether. Anyway, now you have it and it is worth reading – as Simon’s articles invariably are. You can also download an optional PDF of the article if you so wish.

Laurel is back with her Verdigris Blog after a short break, which this week looks at ’Green fashion’ and its possible implications for the environment. A further reminder of the new series of Wild Format Technology Guides from Digital Dots. The first four of 48 can be accessed below and downloaded as PDFs. News has been a bit patchy this week due to the main holiday season in the UK and Europe, but you will find some good stuff among this week’s articles. I borrowed Monday and Tuesday’s leaders from Gareth Ward at the Print Business, the UK’s pre-eminent publication and Website for management in print. Monday features Xaar and its most recent acquisition in the United States; while Tuesday features Brian Filler, president of Screen Europe, who has announced plans to retire in September after 35 years with the Japanese prepress provider. Brian has also become well-known to many in South Africa following his trips over the years in support of Screen at Kemtek and more recently Ipex Machinery and Rotocontrol. I had the pleasure of spending time with Brian during drupa and learned of his plans prior to his most recent trip.

Wednesday’s leader featuring Xerox became a non-story by the end of the week; while Thursday was given to Canon and Océ, as Corus in France embraces high quality inkjet with world’s first Océ ColorStream 6500 Chroma continuous inkjet presses. On Friday, Sappi took the lead with its plans for FachPack 2016, where it will showcase its latest innovative sustainable products designed to minimise the use of fossil-based plastic packaging. You can also find a related article to this latest announcement in Online Features Chapter 02 from April this year, which you might have missed, when Sappi introduced Algro Guard OHG, its new high-barrier paper-based packaging solution with integrated barriers and heat sealing properties, which make the paper ideally suitable for a multitude of flexible packaging applications.

You’ll find a handful of nice installations this week, led by Zero Plus in Pretoria on Tuesday with South Africa’s first EFI H1625 wide-format LED printer, from Bytes; then Duplo in the UK at Brunel Print in Bristol. On Wednesday EFI at Multi-Color, followed by Esko Kongsberg at Resolution Imaging in Melbourne, Australia; and then Heidelberg USA at Colonial Printing with a Versafire CV digital press. Thursday, and already mentioned above came from Canon and Océ at Corus in France; then we had Muller Martini with a new soft cover system at Grafica Veneta in Italy; this was followed by Heidelberg UK at Folio Print Finishers in Bristol as it adds two Stahlfolders, a BH82 and a BH66; followed by Digital Colour Centre, a digital print and design shop in Cape Town South Africa’s CBD, which has added a Xerox Versant 80 Press; Fujifilm with CEWE, the Web-to-print heavyweight in Germany, which has added a Jet Press 720 S digital inkjet B2 sheetfed press; and then Manroland Sheetfed with a Roland 700 for Vietnam. Lastly, on Friday to round off the week: Sun Chemical at Delaroche Publicité in France, with its Streamline alternative solvent inkjet inks for the company’s HP Scitex TurboJet flatbed inkjet press.

The tailender this week goes to the BPIF, which was awarded Event of the Year for the British Book Design and Production Awards at the 2016 Trade Association Forum Best Practice Awards which were held in London on 6 July. Congratulations to the team who were pictured in the article on Monday.

That’s it for another week.
My best regards,
Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 08 July 2016

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 32 selected news articles for the week, plus eleven more in our own drupa Newsroom from Conti, Tresu, Xaar with Ricoh, Xeikon, HP Inc, EyeC, and Contiweb, which now brings the total to 416. You’ll also find two new entries in our FESPA Newsroom for the upcoming Digital Textile Conference in Milan, Italy on 30 September; and also for FESPA Mexico, highlighting its educational programme for the show which takes places from 18 – 20 August.

We have three new additions to Online Features Chapter 06 this week, from KBA with Interprint in Germany with the RotaJET VL; Highcon with Israel’s Eco Concrete; and Permapack in Switzerland with Esko.

This week sees the start of a brand new Digital Dots Wild Format Technology Guides series, which will continue over the coming 12 months. Sponsors which have made this new series possible include Agfa, EFI, Esko, Fujifilm, HP and Mimaki. The authors are Sonja Angerer, Laurel Brunner, Nessan Cleary, Paul Lindström and Sophie Matthews-Paul. We have included an introductory article leading the news on Thursday, with links to each of the first four articles which can be downloaded as illustrated PDFs from the Technology Guides section on our Website. If you haven’t noticed this section before, you’ll find it in the Index on our Home Page. I do hope you will find the new series useful and also enjoy it.

News leaders this week came from UPM on Monday, as it invests in the Kymi pulp mill in Finland to strengthen its position in the global pulp market as a supplier of bleached chemical pulp. Tuesday saw Sappi announce that its recently completed R100-million strategic investment has ensured a smooth relocation and improved production process – and improved quality – of its legendary Typek brand. On Wednesday, KBA confirmed finalisation of its takeover of die-cutter manufacturer Iberica in Barcelona, Spain, as the press manufacturer expands its portfolio into the growing packaging market.

Thursday was led by Wild Format and Digital Dots, covered above; while on Friday, we led with FESPA’s programme developed with FESPA Italia and leading Italian fashion & textile associations for the 2016 Digital Textile Conference in Milan, which we also said above, takes place on 30 September.

Other events in the news this week also include the BPIF on Wednesday, as the British Coatings Federation joins with BPIF Cartons and the Stationers’ Company to present an exciting programme for a major food packaging Supply Chain Summit in London in September. On Thursday, interest for inkjet has pushed new players to join TheIJC 2016 (The Inkjet Conference) taking place at Swissôtel Düsseldorf / Neuss from 4 – 6 October. This will be the third event in the ongoing series.

If you haven’t downloaded them already, please don’t miss the superb series of eleven drupa daily magazines which were produced for each day of the show. They really do contain an amazing collection of interviews and articles, features and snippets which should definitely not be missed. You can use the Adobe button in each introduction in our drupa Newsroom below, to download the PDFs.

The tailender for this week draws attention to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (on Tuesday), which saw Heidelberg receive awards for its digitisation strategy, in both the IDG Business Media Awards, as well as Dimension Data Deutschland’s Digital Leader Awards 2016.

That’s all from me for another week. You’ll find lots more of interest if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Correction! We have a really exciting new addition for you in our own drupa Newsroom. If you weren’t at the show, or even if you were at this year’s event in Düsseldorf, you can now get your hands on all eleven issues of the drupa daily show magazine, with complete PDFs of each issue to download.

These are jam-packed with news and highlights and the daily ‘Red Sofa’ interview with key exhibitors’ starting with drupa President and Koenig & Bauer chief executive Claus Bolza-Schünemann; followed by Kodak chief executive Jeff Clarke; Canon EMEA president and chief executive Rokus van Iperen; Benny Landa; Enrique Lores, HP president of Imaging and Printing; Konica Minolta’s Olaf Lorenz general manager Business Solutions Europe; Jean-Pascal Bobst; Eijiro Hori, president of post-press kit manufacturer Horizon; Massivit chief executive Avner Israeli; Marabu chief executive York Boeder; and lastly, Wolfgang Kroplunik, head of business development & Western Europe, Uncoated Fine Paper at Mondi; talking to two of Europe’s top trade press editors: Thomas Fasold of Druck&Medien in Germany; and Daryl Danielli, of PrintWeek UK.

The drupa daily also includes some of the hottest show technology, sales and products that were the buzz words at drupa 2016, and breaking news of the day, sourced, curated and produced by a team of the industry’s leading journalists throughout the show. Comments and rumours, photos and all that made it ten fantastic days at drupa and in drupacity Düsseldorf.

Key news headlines this week: Monday’s leads were from KBA featuring newspaper web press orders in Germany, and the Indian Ocean Island of La Réunion. Tuesday saw Screen’s new high-speed roll-fed inkjet press, the Truepress Jet520NX drupa preview debut, lead the day’s selection. On Wednesday, Manroland Web Systems’ new compact web premiere: the Geoman e:line, took the lead; while on Thursday, Canon celebrated its most successful drupa ever.

Friday’s leader crowned the news of the week most appropriately, as the appointment of Jeff Jacobson to head Xerox Corporation was announced by the Xerox board, following completion of the company’s planned separation into two publicly traded companies. My sincere congratulations to Jeff, who has remained a very good friend since we first met at drupa 2000.

This week’s Verdigris Blog from Laurel Brunner, addressing environmental policies, really is an excellent article that should also not be missed.

As a tailender this week, on Wednesday, Kodak announced that it celebrated 21 years of Thermal CTP at drupa. A wonderful celebration indeed, since Dan Gelbart and Boudewijn Neijens of Creo (now part of Kodak) introduced their first thermal platesetter, heralding the birth of computer-to-plate at drupa 1995.

I was there, and followed this new and emerging technology very closely for the next three years, until Ipex in 1998, when commercially viable, reliable and affordable CTP was born with the Trendsetter, using Kodak Polychome Graphics’ thermal plates. It was immediately after this, that Graphic Repro & Print became one of the first five magazines in the world to adopt CTP. I wanted to prove to the industry that it was real and that it really did work.

Our first issue produced using CTP featured Heidelberg CEO Hartmut Mehdorn on its front cover, and the second issue, where we described the move to computer-to-plate from computer-to-film had Scitex’ corporate VP Miki Nagler on its cover. The issues are still in our Website archives for 1998! Wonderful pioneering stuff in those days! The rest, as they say, is history.

That’s it again for another week or so. Please scroll down carefully, as there is so much good stuff to read about.

With my best regards,
Mike Hilton
