drupa 2016

Value Publishing Mike Hilton 2017.001

By Andreas Weber, Head of Value  |  German Version

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (#Heideldruck for short) is in the ascendancy, growing sustainably and profitably while other companies such as HP, Xerox, Ricoh, and Canon are being forced to restructure and/or consolidate. This appears to be nothing out of the ordinary looking back on over 150 years of a company steeped in tradition, but look more closely and it’s a different story. Heideldruck claims it was the only printing press company to record a significant improvement in incoming orders over the past financial year in the period during and after drupa. But it certainly won’t be resting on its laurels – quite the opposite, in fact. Entirely new growth segments for the sector are being identified and approached proactively, with Heideldruck mutating into an “agile” company.

“Over the next five years, Heidelberg will once again become a leading light in the sector, enjoying strong growth and profits. We’ve defined the relevant success factors and have already introduced initial measures. This marks the start of a new era of growth for Heidelberg,” said the company’s CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.

ValueCheck by Andreas Weber with Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG

https://twitter.com/ValueCommAG/status/872823956943900672

Hundsdörfer also had the following to say: “The Heidelberg Digital Technology (HDT) and Heidelberg Digital Business and Services (HDB) sectors were established on April 1, 2017 to prepare for the company’s digital future. HDT combines sheetfed offset, label printing, and postpress operations and is responsible for developing, producing, and marketing the appropriate technologies and products for new business models. HDB, meanwhile, is where Heidelberg manages its operations relating to services, consumables, remarketed equipment, digital printing technology, and solutions throughout the value-added chain.”

This was possible thanks to the economic recovery of Heidelberg and the profitable growth it is now once again experiencing. The most important observations regarding the new strategy and the KPIs from the latest balance sheet are as follows:

  • Strategic focus on technology leadership, digital transformation, and operational excellence
  • Group targets for 2022 defined and underpinned with specific measures
  • Targeted increase in sales to around €3 billion, in EBITDA to €250-300 million, and in net profit after taxes to over €100 million
  • Initial strategic measures already implemented – two acquisitions (DOCUFY/Fujifilm coatings & printing chemicals in EMEA) and enhanced efficiency
  • Presentation of annual financial statement for 2016/2017 confirms targets achieved

Worth noting:
Digital doesn’t “only” mean digital printing at Heideldruck

Digital printing is naturally a fundamental part of the new, comprehensive “Heidelberg goes digital” strategy. The new Primefire platform for digital packaging printing sets the bar extremely high here. But the digital transformation of the print business demands more than simply building good digital presses. Heideldruck has now gained a significant edge in this respect by finding a holistic approach that actually enables print shops to master the digital transformation. At the Annual Accounts Press Conference on June 8, 2017 in Frankfurt, CFO Dirk Kaliebe pointed out that it was now virtually impossible to distinguish between the high level of digitization in offset printing and that in digital printing. “The term ‘digital printing’ is actually misleading,” remarks Hundsdörfer. “Non-impact printing would be more accurate, that is to say a contactless printing method. Ultimately, however, printing takes place and an analog product is produced,” he explains. Hundsdörfer believes a mechanical engineer’s skill lies in combining all possible methods that serve to manufacture marketable print products of all kinds that are suitable for production in an efficient and automated process.

Is Heidelberg the print world’s Amazon?

As was already stressed at drupa 2016, the Push to Stop method enables autonomous printing. This is similar to Google helping to develop autonomous driving. The aim of the Heidelberg Cloud and assistant solutions is for the company to become the Amazon of the printing industry. “Heidelberg goes digital” is therefore linked to far more than a new way of building printing presses. As I see it, this is comparable to the success story of Tesla. At first glance, Tesla manufactures a premium electric car. A closer look reveals highly sophisticated data exchange between the driver/his preferences and the vehicle’s maximum coordination with specific needs and an optimum driving experience. In spring 2017, Tesla succeeded in overtaking automotive pioneer Ford in terms of market capitalization and sold more luxury vehicles in the United States than Porsche, VW/Audi, and BMW put together. Heidelberg could enjoy similar success. That’s why Hundsdörfer is promoting his vision of the “agile” company – a company that in my view is characterized by thinking and acting autonomously!

Screenshots of the Heideldruck Annual Report, which has a die-cut folding carton on the cover that can be removed and turned into a “digital” box. This can be downloaded via Heidelberg.com.

As an experienced mechanical engineering insider, Hundsdörfer knows the importance of “operational excellence” (with the focus on permanent optimization of the solution portfolio and production processes). He is also aware of the two biggest assets of Heideldruck – know-how and experience regarding the best way to run a print business, under the premise of automating what can be automated – in production, in procurement, in real-time analysis of production resources in the field, in dialog between Heidelberg customers and their customers, and much more besides. Heideldruck is already a long way ahead of many other mechanical engineering companies in this respect. And it is marketing its know-how with start-ups, the go-to market, production companies (e.g. in 3D printing), and also other sectors (no doubt including the automotive sector in the future), where production processes continuously need to be converted and adapted. And not over a period of many months, but in just a few days.

There was good reason for the following question being raised at the Annual Accounts Press Conference: “Given everything you’ve told us, is it still appropriate for you to be called Heidelberger Druckmaschinen [= Heidelberg printing presses]?” The answer was that the brand has long been called “Heidelberg” and that’s all that counts. According to Hundsdörfer, building presses is vital for Heideldruck because the machines and their operation are linked to numerous additional and value-added services offered by the company. This is also the reason for the recent acquisitions of DOCUFY and, above all, the consumables sector of Fujifilm. Accordingly, Hundsdörfer wants Heideldruck to become a system solution provider, rather like a kind of platform operator for the global printing sector and its customers. Transformation is not simply a means to an end here, but the core business enabling profitable growth like that of the GAFA companies (Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple – see our ValueWebinar on value analysis “Transformation – Beam me up, Scotty”).

Conclusion

The new “Heidelberg goes digital” strategy clearly won people over at the Annual Accounts Press Conference, with the share price immediately soaring to its highest level all year. Despite the significant complexity, the Heideldruck CEO and CFO were able to set out their perspective and arguments both concisely and transparently. The Heidelberg Digital Business and Services (HDB) division has a key role to play, because this is where new business models/business model philosophies need to be developed for Heideldruck and also for customers and partners. — See as well our  ValueDialog with Management Board member and Chief Digital Officer Dr. Ulrich Hermann.

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 09 June 2017

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 23 news items for you, plus Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog which looks at ‘Waste and guilt’, providing food for thought. In Online Features, we have a rather special article on 200 Years Koenig & Bauer, which has travelled an innovation-lined road from the very first cylinder press to today’s digital print and more, and is now set to celebrate its 200th Anniversary in Würzburg in August.

Heidelberg dominated the lead headlines on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; then on Wednesday, we had Komori from Gareth Ward, featuring pharmaceutical carton printer and packager, Chester Medical Solutions, which has capped an investment programme with the UK’s first of Komori’s new B2 presses for carton work; then on Friday, KBA’s 200th Anniversary.

”The new strategy ’Heidelberg goes digital’ clearly convinced at the press conference — which at the same time caused a jump in the course of one year. Despite the complexity, the Heideldruck CEO Hundsdörfer and the Chief Financial Officer Kaliebe were able to present their views and arguments in a convincing and comprehensible manner. The Heidelberg Digital Business and Services (HDB) Board of Management is playing a key role, as new business models philosophies are being created for Heideldruck as well as for customers and partners. —Andreas Weber, Head of Value. Of particular importance this week is Heidelberg’s new growth strategy until 2022, presented at its Annual Press Conference held on Wednesday, along with the release of its Annual Report for 2016/2017, plus two acquisitions announcements. The first of which actually led Tuesday’s headlines with the takeover of technical documentation software provider DOCUFY, and set to strengthen Heidelberg’s Digital Platforms division; with the second on Thursday, as Heidelberg confirms it has taken over Fujifilm‘s coatings and pressroom chemicals operations in the EMEA region, situated in Kruibeke in Belgium, and Reutlingen in Germany.

Key sales and installations this week came from Heidelberg UK at 4-Print with a Versafire CP digital press and Suprasetter CTP system, Durst at Image Data in the UK with superwide-format for fabrics (also from Gareth Ward); and Xerox at Inkfish in Cape Town on Monday; Inca Digital in Scandinavia on Tuesday; Komori in the UK on Wednesday (mentioned above); and Ryobi in the UK at Northend Creative on Thursday; then Hybrid Software in Italy, IFS in the UK with Horizon, and Manroland Web at Quad/Graphics in North America on Friday.

You’ll also find software upgrades and new kit this week from Agfa and Xaar on Monday; new cobalt-free Inks from Huber on Tuesday; and productivity boosts for Highcon Euclid on Friday.

The tailender this week goes to Ricoh on Wednesday as the Ghent Workgroup announces that Ricoh has successfully achieved GWG PDF Preflight Certification.

That’s all until next time. You find more not mentioned below if you scroll down carefully, particularly for Labelexpo Europe taking place in Brussels from 25 – 28 September.

With best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 02 June 2017

Welcome to this week’s roundup of another 20 news items for you. It hasn’t been a spectacular week for news due to last week’s holiday interruptions and with more this past weekend and on Monday 5 June for Whitsun in some European countries, but there’s still a reasonable selection for you to go through which I shall not bother to highlight this week, as well as some superb installations.

Don’t miss Gareth Ward at Springfield Solutions on Wednesday, at the unveiling of its latest expansion, making it the largest all-digital labels business in the UK, together with its third Screen Truepress Jet L350 inkjet label press with an online Digicon 3 line, as well as an offline Digicon 3, to handle shorter production runs from the other presses.

Other successes this week include KBA Sheetfed in the UK; Esko Kongsberg in Madrid; KBA at B&K Offsetdruck in Ottersweier, as its new C16 web press came on stream right on schedule on 1 June; Technotrans in the UK; EFI in Finland; then Heidelberg and KBA in North America, and finally Esko and Kongsberg in Belgium.

There’s a new addition in our drupa Newsroom, as the drupa Prize for 2017 goes to Anne Sokoll for her doctoral thesis, chosen by the Faculty of Philosophy of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Also among Thursday’s headlines.

That’s all until next time. With best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 12 May 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with a bumper collection of 45 articles, plus Laurel Brunner’s very latest Verdigris Blog, which provides an update on the development of Eco Labels; and then we have the very latest in our drupa Newsroom with the official kick-off for drupa 2020, which took place at Messe Düsseldorf on Monday during Interpack, highlighting topics which showcase the industry’s innovative force, and a new key visual ’embrace the future’. An example of this can be found below.

With 45 news items for you to check out, and with a strong focus on both FESPA and Interpack, which both took place last week, I shall try to be as brief as possible.

On Tuesday KBA led with its first quarter financial results, having got off to a good start to 2017 with strong new business and a 21% higher order intake, a rise in order backlog and much more if you take time to check out the announcement. On Friday, you will find Kodak’s first quarter results, which also reflect growth in its key product areas and provide an updated overview of progress within its various divisions.

On Wednesday and Thursday, HP and Canon took the top positions, with Thursday’s lead article by Gareth Ward, but there were also key announcements from Ricoh, Canon, Fujifilm and Domino earlier in the week, too, among many others, including Sun Chemical and Blackman & White, EFI and MTEX. You’ll find lots if you scroll down.

Recent sales and installations this week came from EFI, as McGowans Print in Dublin is selected as the world’s second EFI Nozomi single- pass LED inkjet corrugated board press installation; then we have Heidelberg at Haslam Printers in Bolton with a new Versafire CP digital press; and IFS at Holywell Printers in Oxford, with a Horizon HT-30 three-side trimmer, all of which appeared on Wednesday.

On Thursday the really big one came from Manroland Web Systems, with the world’s first Geoman e:line bound for Vorländer in Dreis-Tiefenbach, Germany, and due to commence production in spring of next year. This is followed by MPH Fulfilment in the UK, as it purchases its sixth Edale press; then Simply Cartons, also in the UK, which has installed a Technotrans central cooling system for its KBA-equpped pressroom; and Lasertryk in Denmark, which has chosen Taopix software for its photo commerce division. On Friday Herff Jones in the U.S. has installed a Heidelberg ‘Push to Stop’ Speedmaster XL 106 long perfector; its second XL 106 long-perfector i n two years; while in the UK, Falconer Print & Packaging has upgraded its Prinect workflows, added a Suprasetter CTP system and a Speedmaster SX52-5 UV press. Last but not least, we have Xaar at Cerlat in Spain with the very latest Xaar 2001+ printheads on Cerlat’s new KERAjet ceramic tile printers.

It’s all about meeting the smartest people at FESPA 2017 (from left): Mark Lawn, Canon Europe; Thomas Haas, Ricoh EMEA; Nav Moulavi, Canon; Erik from Printfactory; and at least: Andreas Weber, ValuePublishing. Photos: Andreas Weber.

On Friday, FESPA announced that its 2018 event will be held in Berlin, Germany in May. Then InPrint Italy is set to take place in Milan in November 2018; and lastly, also from FN Brooks, the founders of InPrint, we have ‘Pure Digital’, a new digital print event for the creative industry, to be staged at RAI Convention Centre in Amsterdam in April 2018.

My tailender for this week goes to Ricoh, as its digital book printing solution and Ricoh Pro C5200 series both receive 2017 EDP Awards, presented in Hamburg during FESPA.

You’ll find much more if you scroll down carefully. Until next time.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 21 April 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 28 articles over the past four days, plus the latest Wild-Format Technology Guide from Sophie Matthews-Paul addressing direct-to-garment printing; Laurel Brunner’s 250th Verdigris environmental Blog; and a new addition in Online Features featuring the new KBA Rapida 75 PRO and new workflow package at Hansa-Druckerei in Grevenbroich, not far from Düsseldorf and Neuss in Germany.

For more than a generation, “digitalization” has had a fulminant impact (regardless of how one may interpret the term!); our living environment and real life go hand in hand with fulminant structural changes at ever shorter intervals accompanied by an enormous increase in pressure, thanks to globalization. So time for a change, specially in the print media industry! — Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Another short week but with an interesting mixed bag for you once again. Tuesday began with the latest issue of KBA Report No 50, timed to highlight the company’s 200th Anniversary a little later this year with a special anniversary supplement. Wednesday began with a focus on Ricoh from Gareth Ward, as its new CEO plans a huge shakeup of the company in order to escape decline. Thursday’s headlines were led by news of Sappi‘s first sustainable joint packaging development with Felix Schoeller: The initial results are convincing, and will feature at Interpack from 4 – 10 May in Düsseldorf. Then Heidelberg UK, which led the news to round off this short week on Friday, as Elanders Newcastle takes delivery of a Speedmaster XL 106-8-P long perfector and top-performance Stahlfolder TH 82-P.

Pre-show news this week features InPrint 2017 in Orlando, USA; Metpack 2017 in Essen, Germany; Interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf; and IST METZ’ UV Days 2017 in Nürtingen, Germany. You’ll spot them all if you scroll down carefully, featuring a number of exhibitors at the various events.

A selection of recent installations appears on Tuesday with Prinect Workflow and MIS from Heidelberg USA at Geographics in Atlanta; the very latest Stahlfolder KH 82 from Heidelberg UK at Penstripe in Leeds; and Manroland Sheetfed in Hungary with a Roland 506 LV hybrid for the country’s banknote printer; then from Xitron, EFI‘s Packaging Suite workflow with Radius in Canada; and from Tecnau at Rotomail in Milan on Wednesday. On Thursday, we have Heidelberg’s Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour with coater and X-Package cutting job times in half at Brodnax Printing in Dallas; and Xaar with new printheads at Parefeuille Provence in France for high-quality tile production; and to wrap up the week Elanders Newcastle with its Speedmaster XL 106-8-P long perfector and Stahlfolder on Friday.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open due to take place in Cape Town from 15 – 17 May, with 16-year old Enrique van Wyk from Bloemfontein joining players from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other South Africans for this popular event. You’ll find this among Thursday’s headlines as usual.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find a few more if you scroll down carefully, including Ghent Workgroup with Hybrid Software; and locr with a new white paper from Infotrends, among others.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.011

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.002

(μεταμόρφωσις, “Transformation, transformierend“, von μετα- (meta-), „Veränderung, Wechsel, Wendepunkt“ und μορφή (morphe), „Form“).

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.007

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.026

Google digitalisiert u. a. Die Kernbotschaft: „Communication first, Products, Services second“.

So z.

Sein Motto/Claim: „Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!“ — Siehe hierzu den ValueDialog „Great task by PastBook’s CEO Stefano Cutello: “Relive Your Memories. Automagically Created for You!”

PROKOM Webinar Transformation by Andreas Weber.022

Zum Beispiel durch „Machine learning to make human brains faster“.

As a follow-on from last Friday’s main lead article regarding Kodak having cancelled the sale of its Prosper Inkjet business, Monday’s lead article announces Kodak’s new head of its Enterprise Inkjet Systems division, replacing Philip Cullimore who is taking a break. Tuesday’s lead was taken by a combination of Gareth Ward’s article and Heidelberg’s own article announcing the new CX 75 press. On Thursday, UPM announced that production of its Brite family has now been expanded into Austria at the Steyrermühl Mill; while on Thursday, Heidelberg took the lead again with the introduction to the Colordruck Baiersbronn and the Primefire 106 announcement mentioned above.

The rest of the news is good and comprises a really mixed bag this week as everyone rushed to clear whatever they may have had before the Easter long weekend. You’ll find new inkjet wide-format kit from Agfa, software upgrades again and a new Graphics Suite from Corel; new and improved EFI DFEs for Ricoh; Codimag and IST new energy-saving UV system; and new direct engravable plates from Flint. Then we have post-event news from Esko’s Innovation Day in Ghent at the end of March; lots of pre-show news for Interpack and FESPA 2017 next month among others, and more.

Recent sales and installations successes include Heidelberg at Czech commercial printer Triangl; Graphics Works in the UK with Europe’s first Fujifilm Acuity LED 3200R roll-to-roll printer; Australia’s IVE Group expanding with a Manroland Web Systems Lithoman 80-page double-web press; then Muller Martini at Funke in Erfurt, Germany with two more ProLiner inserters, bringing its mailroom total to four alongside a formidable lineup of other state-of-the-art mailroom equipment from the Swiss manufacturer; and lastly, Cape Branding Services has grown its new digital printing division with a Xerox Color C70 printer from Cape Office Machines and Bytes.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open due to take place in Cape Town in May, with Simonstown’s Riaan Spreeth joining players from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and other South Africans for this popular event. You’ll find this among Thursday’s headlines as usual.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you take your time when you scroll down, including the latest acquisition in the ink world from Hubergroup and expansion for CHILI Publish.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 07 April 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 36 articles from the past week, including a late addition on Friday, Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog which was only posted yesterday, and a new article in Online Features on Esko’s next generation flexo technology milestone, the CDI Crystal 5080 XPS flexo platemaker, at Glatz Klischee in Bregenz, Austria. The new system was first seen at drupa last year and made its market debut this week. There’s also a new entry in our drupa Newsroom, as Messe Düsseldorf extends its international portfolio of trade fairs for the printing and packaging industries with IPAP Tehran, powered by drupa.

Monday’s news began with the market release of Esko’s new CDI Crystal 5080 XPS flexo platemaker, followed on Tuesday by another of the first installations of the new imager at Inci.Flex in Italy and then on Wednesday, we announced that the CDI Crystal 5080 XPS imager and exposure unit are recipients of a prestigious Red Dot Product Design 2017 award.

Tuesday’s lead came from Gareth Ward at The Print Business, following Heidelberg UK’s Open House at its Brentford headquarters on 29 and 30 March; while Canon reported a rewarding high-speed inkjet participation at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne. Other positive post-event news came from Sign & Digital UK and Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations on Friday.

Among several new software, inks, process-free plates and equipment announcements this week you will find Agfa, Callas, Sun Chemical, Pulse, Kodak Sonora, and Hunkeler Systeme; then we have pre-show news appearing for Interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf in May, on both Monday and Tuesday, and for Labelexpo Europe in Brussels in September on Wednesday.

There are a number of firsts among this week’s installations. Tuesday saw a world first with Prinect Production Manager at Petermann in Bad Nauheim, Germany. The Prinect software rental model made its first international showing at drupa last year; then we have a UK first at Swallowmax in Enfield, with Komori‘s newest G29 H-UV B2 sheetfed press; and on Wednesday, we had Rehms Druck in Germany in a European first with Konica Minolta‘s AccurioJet KM-1, as the company’s first investment in B2 inkjet. This was followed by Straub Druck und Medien in Germany add its second Fujifilm Jet Press 720S B2 inkjet flatbed press to support its growth strategy.

On Thursday Landa announced the first of three beta sites for the S10 Nanographic Printing Press at Graphica Bezalel in Israel, with installation slated to begin in July; this will be followed by the first beta in North America scheduled for November; and finally the first beta site in Europe at Edelmann in Germany, with installation set to commence in December 2017. UNISON confirmed its purchase of a Horizon Stitchliner from IFS for its Leeds, UK facility; and to round off the week on Friday, we had Dats Print Services add a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52-4+L Anicolor, York Mailing UK add a Goss Sunday 5000 64-page short grain web offset press – bringing its total number of web presses to 14 across four sites; while in South Africa, Universal labels in Midrand near Johannesburg has added its fourth MPS narrow web flexo press from Rotocon.

Late news on Friday came from Kodak, which has decided to retain its Prosper Inkjet business, following an in-depth management review of business operations and multiple discussions with prospective buyers.

According to Jeff Clarke, Kodak chief executive officer,‘This is a pragmatic decision given the improvements in the business and the offers received.’ He added, ‘Prosper performed well in 2016 with a 40 per cent increase in annuity sales for the full year. We expect our Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division to be profitable this year, including our next-generation Ultrastream…’ You’ll find more in the article, as well as on the Website on Monday [10 April].

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open due to take place in Cape Town in May, with Michaelhouse’s Jabu Price Moor amongst the youngest competitors joining players from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa for this popular event. You’ll find this among Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until a week tomorrow, as we have the Easter long weekend coming up and too many servers and computers will be offline. You will find lots more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Two highlights among many others: Xaar announcing the official opening of its new 3D Centre. And Xeikon Café was dedicated to innovations in packaging.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 31 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 35 articles from the past week and Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, with a headline which conjures up memories of a popular breakfast cereal package featuring three popular gnomic elf mascots – rather surprisingly dating back as far as 1933, with the slogan having been coined even four years earlier in a print advert in 1929, some two years after the popular breakfast cereal was first invented. Snap, Crackle and Pop! Or as they might say in Germany, Knisper! Knasper! Knusper!

There are two new additions to Online Features this week: firstly from KBA detailing its DriveTronic Plate Ident technology enabling perfect automatic plate changes to take place on all formats of KBA sheetfed presses; and then from Heidelberg as innovation takes hold in industrial commercial postpress with the huge success of drupa-generation Stahlfolders in both the UK and Germany.

This last week of March and the end of the first quarter of 2017 has been a fairly busy week for news of a totally mixed bag for you to wade through. The past week has also seen Xeikon Café staged in Lier, Belgium, and Sign & Digital UK take place at the NEC, so I’m pretty sure there will be more post-event news still to follow. The major Xeikon announcement of its entry into UV inkjet with new Panther technology appears on Tuesday, followed by a surprise announcement on Wednesday that Wim Maes, CEO of Xeikon is stepping down will leave in early May.

Key articles this week that deserve checking out come from Gareth Ward at the Print Business UK, and lead the headlines on Tuesday with Ricoh’s high-speed inkjet presses; followed with the leader on Wednesday, with observations from the recently released drupa Global Trends Report, which has seen litho biting back as the digital drive dips. Another of Gareth’s articles also appears on Friday, in which he provides his post-show impression of Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne in February – with inkjet now pushing firmly at the door of commercial print. You will find Xaar plc leading the news on Friday, announcing the official opening of its new 3D Centre on Nottingham Science Park in the UK earlier in the week; and Esko on Thursday, with its plans to debut Simplified Workflow for Labels at Labelexpo Europe, taking place in Brussels in September.

“There is no doubt that High Speed Sintering technology can transform 3D Printing from a low volume prototyping solution to a mainstream manufacturing process,’ said Professor Neil Hopkinson, the original inventor of the transformational High Speed Sintering technology, who heads up Xaar’s 3D division. ‘The step change to high volume manufacturing will be most efficiently achieved through partnerships with committed stakeholders across the supply chain. Our new 3D Centre in Nottingham is the ideal location for such partnerships to flourish.“

The usual collection of recent installation and sales successes began on Monday with Heidelberg Anicolor and Suprasetter CTP at Allura Printing in the United States; then Manroland Sheetfed at Copag in Brazil. On Tuesday we had Kartongbolaget in Sweden with a HP Indigo 30000 and TRESU iCoat coating line; and Gieselmann Druck in Bielefeld, Germany with a new Muller Martini Primera MC. Wednesday saw Cape Town-based RSA Litho add a Xerox 1000 Colour Press and Xerox Versant 80 from Bytes and Oxbow; followed by Marrs Printing & Packaging in the US with a KBA Rapida 106; and then Israeli digital photobook specialist Liel Albums with a new 8-colour Sawgrass system. Thursday saw Servinform in Spain become the latest transactional printer to adop t the high-speed Ricoh Pro VC60000; followed by Muller Martini with a Diamant MC 60 bookline for Pollina in Luçon, France. On Friday we had GPS Colour Graphics in Northern Ireland step up production with Fujifilm’s Superia CTP and Superia plates investment; while Columbus Production in the USA has added a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106; and lastly, Micropress in the UK has invested in EFI‘s Midmarket Print Suite MIS/ERP system.

We had new kit announced on Monday from both Hunkeler and SPGPrints; and then on Tuesday from Flint Group with new Thermal processor for flexo, in addition to Xeikon with its new Panther UV inkjet system for labels which is already mentioned above.

Other items to look out for are the survey from GWG; a new partnership for Sappi’s Biotech division; acquisitions by both Goss and Canon; a call for entries for the British Book Design Production Awards for 2017, with a deadline for entries of 30 June, and FESPA’s winner for the Wrap Master Design Competition.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with George Mecs from France competing in South Africa for the first time, and joining players from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa for this popular event. You’ll find it among Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find so much more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 24 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 articles from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, explaining the international standard for assessing the potential deinkability of print; and news from Messe Düsseldorf advising that the 4th Global Trends Report 2017 is now available to order, with a free Executive Summary you can download in a choice of seven languages. If you go to the news leader on Wednesday, or to our drupa Newsroom, you can read drupa director Sabine Geldermann’s introduction by following the link to the drupa Website where you can then register to download the Executive Summary for FREE. You can also purchase the full report from Messe Düsseldorf’s Online Shop in English or German for a nominal fee.

A key news highlight appeared on Wednesday, as KBA released its Annual Report for 2016, recording the highest profit margin in the company’s history, coupled with a healthy double-digit increase in revenue, market share gains in packaging and digital printing, a solid order intake with a high order backlog as the company prepares to celebrate its 200th Anniversary later this year. You can also find more about KBA-Flexotecnica’s successful start to 2017 in Friday’s headlines.

The lead article on Tuesday, by Gareth Ward, featured Canon, as it looks to establish its Oce Colorado UV Gel inkjet as a third way between solvent and latex in roll to roll print.

You’ll find a lot of pre-show and pre-event news again this week, beginning with Esko’s European Prepress Innovation Tour on Monday; then Xeikon Café which takes place this coming week, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday Sign & Digital UK announced its lineup ahead of its 30th Anniversary show which also takes place this coming week at the NEC, Birmingham; and then a FESPA 2017 mention, set to take place in Hamburg in May.

On Thursday, Heidelberg and Gallus took the lead as they announced their lineup for Interpack 2017 taking place from 4 – 10 May in Dusseldorf, and on Friday, we have FINAT with the annual European Label Forum, set to take place from 7 – 9 June in Berlin; and lastly another early mention for InPrint 2017, set to take place in Munich in November, and once again co-located with Productronica. ICE Europe, which took place this week in Munich had mentions on both Thursday and Friday; and lastly, Lopec 2017, which takes place in Munich this coming week, is among Friday’s headlines.

Friday’s news was led by Manroland Web Systems as managing director Alexander Wassermann provides a brief background and facts about the new and innovative web offset and gravure hybrid Varioman press for flexible packaging printing, which is due to commence production at an international packaging printer early next year.

Key sales and installations successes this week came from Heidelberg USA at Adams Lithographing, and Renz UK in Leeds on Monday; from Heidelberg UK at A3 Design & Print in Surrey with a digital Versafire CP; then Essex-based trade finisher Filmdie with a new Horizon perfect binder and three-side trimmer from IFS; followed by Contiweb/DG with a Thallo press for identity and security print at De La Rue in Malta; and lastly Edale with a 7-colour press in Devon – all on Tuesday.  On Thursday, Cape Town-based Creative Brands in South Africa announced that it has added a Xerox X1000 Digital Colour Press from Oxbow and Bytes to boost productivity. This was followed by Polar in Portugal with a fourth new cutter equipped for labels at Calipolense in Vila Viçosa.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Ireland’s Cian Arthurs joining players from France, England, the United States and South Africa for this popular event – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you scroll down carefully.
