Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 20 May 2016

Welcome to another roundup of 29 news highlights for the past week together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday, which this week looks at climate scientists and carbon accountants, and is well worth reading. It reveals some new approaches and initiatives which, as Laurel states, are actually quite inspiring.

You’ll find two new additions in Online Features Chapter 05 from Xeikon and Scodix and their respective customers revealing what the technologies have done and are doing for them and their businesses and customers. There’s also a mini white paper from Asahi which addresses its more sustainable water washout developments in flexographic platemaking.

With just 8 more days to go to the big one opens its doors in Dusseldorf a week tomorrow, we have another 28 new articles from drupa Exhibitors, bringing the total thus far to 214; as well as four from organisers Messe Dusseldorf, two each in English and German highlighting the drupa innovation park; and the city of Dusseldorf as it becomes drupacity, bringing their total to 61.

We then have the ninth article in the drupa ante portas series of interviews and articles from Andreas Weber in Mainz. This latest focuses firmly on packaging, asmore than half of all packaging volume worldwide is attributed to printed packaging, and the trend is rising. Lastly, there are ten Expert Articles – each with a specific focus – from ten of the world’s leading graphic arts editors and journalists – all in our own drupa Newsroom, if you care to pay a visit and scroll down through the combined total of 294 articles to date. You do need to scroll down though, in order to reach each of the Chapters or Sections.

News leaders this week not related to drupa began with KP Services on Monday, with its official opening in Jersey in the Channel Islands, as Kodak and the Guiton Group launched the world’s newest inkjet printing plant, creating a new digital approach in newspaper printing. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we had Muller Martini, X-Rite, and Kodak respectively, which were all drupa-related and also appear in the drupa Newsroom. On Friday, the KBA Group reported on its AGM held in Wurzburg last Thursday, with its shareholders well satisfied with the company’s development and the positive results achieved through the Group’s Fit@All programme. Also from KBA, news that Mittelrhein-Verlag in Koblenz has ordered an additional 6/2 KBA Commander CT web press for its flagship Rhein-Zeitung, one of Germany’s largest regional titles.

Other sales and installation successes this week began on Monday with Fujifilm and a UK first at Emmerson Press, as its new sheetfed Jet Press 720S began production. From Heidelberg UK at Dataprint with its first Linoprint CV digital press; this was followed by Delta Packaging as it targets growth in Central Europe with an investment in a high spec large-format KBA Rapida 145 six-colour press with double coater for its Gliwice plant in Poland. Lastly from Manroland Web and The Times of India as they announce the expansion and upgrade of the Manroland Regioman web press systems in both Chennai and Pune.

Tuesday saw eDOC in the U.S. add a new Suprasetter 106 DCL for its recently installed Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 X-Package press. Wednesday saw Eversfrank with Xeikon; then Moo Print in London adding its second Polar cutter in 18 months; and Manroland Web with a Uniset refit at the Pueblo Chieftain in Colorado, in the U.S.; while on Thursday, Brailsford Printers in Rotherham, UK, added two Horizon collators and a Horizon perfect binder to its already substantial Horizon lineup, to create efficient end-to-end processing; while Donitz in Germany chose to add an Esko Kongsberg XN22 cutter for prototypes and small-series production.

On Friday, we’ve already mentioned the KBA web press order above. This was followed by Pondres as it partners with Ricoh to boost production inkjet quality with a new Ricoh Pro VC60000 continuous feed inkjet platform. Kingsbury Press is adding a Linoprint CV from Heidelberg at its Doncaster plant this month; Sealed Air has embraced Esko Equinox in Europe; and lastly, Italy’s Palladio Group has added a Manroland 700 HiPrint six-colour press to its plant in Serbia;

That’s all until next time, which will only be after drupa when things will eventually get back to normal again. I hope you find more of interest among the links below.

With my best regards,

Mike Hilton

ValuePublishing Big Data Visuals.001

Digital technologies impact the entire cosmos of print media and complete workflow, too.

By Andreas Weber

Note: The latest market trend analysis by Andreas Weber is the extended version of an article which will be published by the leading technology newspaper VDI-nachrichten. VDI-nachrichten addresses a premium reader target group of more than 310,000 technical and innovation experts in German industry.  — See as well market trend analysis “Focus Packaging”.

The internet is the enemy of print. That had long been the perception in the print media branch. A blind eye was turned to the fact that technologically for decades, digital high-performance networks and data transfer have been indispensable for print technology development.

This occurs on various levels, whereby online, a system architecture is freely available that automatically generates print data and transfers it by internet to selected service providers / printing systems. The simplest form is prints of any data via smartphone or tablet. The first were Apple with AirPrint and Google with CloudPrint; print system manufacturers such as Canon and HP followed with proprietary e-print solutions. On the other hand, data from Wiki platforms such as PediaPress technologies, are transformed into books based on Wikipedia articles selected by the user online. Furthermore, social media users can transform their chronicles on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook into publications at the push of a button to automatically create, for instance, printed posters of Facebook/Instagram friends, canvas prints or diary chronicles in book form from Twitter and Facebook (see mySocialBook, Twenty20 or boomf with the printing of Instagram photos on edible marshmallows).

A few samples how Social Media became already the source for new print applications (driven by innovative suppliers).

These services are used for promotional purposes by both consumers and companies who include such projects in their digital marketing concepts. For pure business applications, marketing and IT data are automatically merged without media disruption to create cross-media customer campaigns that couple a company offer such as an insurance contract extension with feedback from tens of thousands customers, which is then exported to the company’s IT and CRM systems for keeping customer profiles up-to-date and even documenting individual transactions. All documents are then available in both digital and printed form. The customer chooses which form he prefers.

Background
The internet protocol TCP/IP got its breakthrough by enabling large amounts of data to be transferred quickly and reliably, especially for publishing and print applications. The user interface/mouse and particularly PostScript as a page description language revolutionised the generation of print data and print media production already in the 1980s. The sheer unlimited and ubiquitously available storage options through the internet for large amounts of data stemming from all areas of life and industry gave rise to the big data “phenomenon” — with the lure of evaluating unstructured or semi-structured data in relational databases for analyses of any type.

digitalisation_gestion_conges nereo

Digitalisation sets the pace

Two aspects were the logical result for the print media branch:

  • first, all production workflow has to be “digitally” optimised;
  • and secondly, much more data is easily available through the internet that can be printed without media disruption.

The Internet becomes tool and marketplace in one. Accordingly, the online printing sector has grown dynamically: new specialised firms led by CIMPRESS/Vistaprint, Flyeralarm, Onlineprinters/diedruckerei.de or United Printers have accounted since 2009 in Germany alone for a trebling of volume that will most likely surpass the 3+ billion Euro mark in 2016. Popular applications/products are photo books, posters, flyers/mailings, brochures and more.

Key to success for online printing are the principles that characterise the 2016 motto “Touch the future” of drupa, the world’s leading print trade fair: automation, flexibilisation, digitalisation form the basis of “Print 4.0” — a new term borrowed from “Industry 4.0”, the highly commended industry standard from the Hannover Messe 2016. The rudiments of “4.0” have already been established in the printing branch for more than 10 years. The basis: JDF. The digital “Job Definition Format” allows made-to-order production to be taken care of automatically. Added to that is the complete cross-linking of production workflow and production machines including online remote services.

Heideldruck Press event 2 18022016.001

The print technology manufacturers have readied themselves for that. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen has developed a new digital strategy integrating all print technologies and is going one step further at drupa 2016: The “Heidelberg Cloud” moves into focus with its smart print-shop concept. That is a new, extended approach that cross-links fully automated production with business aspects for the transparent and efficient operation of a printing business — incl. engagement with the customers/print buyers who are informed of the status of their orders online or per mobile. Even the automatic ordering of consumables and printing paper is integrated. In the digital printing sector, HP is doing likewise with its “PrintOS” platform that is to be launched at the end of May 2016 and cross-links the proprietary HP systems/technologies used by its customers.

Background:

HP PrintOS wants to enable the processing as simply as possible of any number of print orders from order acceptance to mailing, to work efficiently with partners and colleagues and exploit new growth potential. On a cloud-based, and according to HP open and absolutely secure platform, users have access at any time – no matter where they happen to be. However, PrintOS can only be used by those who have HP printing solutions (HP Indigo digital presses, HP PageWide web presses, HP Scitex presses and HP Latex printers). https://youtu.be/Rd2x2hRnikE

Internet as tool and marketplace in one

The internet, including the online and mobile worlds, is thus becoming an integral part of any type of print media production. Even imaging specialist Canon, the only exhibitor that can cover all drupa highlight themes, backs digital cross-linked transformation and synchronisation of all production, communication and business processes. The social media-conforming Canon motto #UnleashPrint particularly substantiates the drupa 2016 aspiration.

From 3D applications to printing products “cross-linked” through augmented reality, application scenarios that pool all of Canon’s expertise will be shown at drupa 2016. The driver in the “background” is Canon’s solutions skill for accelerating digital transformation through customised software and the merging of proprietary and third-party (such as Microsoft, Oracle, etc.) solutions. Canon gave a taste of what was to come at its future show “Canon Expo” in October 2015 in Paris: It was demonstrated live and explained in presentations how a (fictive) brand of mountain bikes can be staged in media and communications right from the start, from the photo shoot to marketing materials up to e-commerce with a web shop. Everything cast from the same mould, everything seamlessly interwoven. And this, too, at the point-of-sales, for example, where the quality of digitally printed packaging is determining the way forward. Equally impressive was the “creative” zone which showed what a consumer experience is like when everything that one imagines can become reality: From the perception of the world “out there” to one’s own home — everything is supported by Canon in multimedia, by image/photo, video, printed photo book, iPad app, etc.

The Art of Print – Rembrandts revival!

Causing a sensation worldwide recently was “The Next Rembrandt” project: On the initiative of art experts at the Het Rembrandthuis Museum in Amsterdam and scientists from the Delft University of Technology with the support of technology partner Microsoft, all available data and information left behind by Rembrandt was evaluated – some 15 terabytes of data in total. “The Next Rembrandt” was to be made up of 168,263 Rembrandt painting components derived from 3D scans that resulted from a laborious, digital 3D composition in a synthesised new painting. However, no 3D printer was used as reported by the media, but a digital printing system. It is not public yet what kind of digital printing system they used. But: Mid of March 2016 at the Canon Business Days in Venlo, The Netherlands a printed copy of the „The Next Rembrandt“ was shown. It could be produced by advanced Océ VariaDot Imaging-Technologies which are already used to reproduce image motifs in relief, based preferably on 3D scans, such as for the reproduction of old fabric wall coverings formerly created by artists. Print 4.0 needs Communication 4.0

“In dealing with digitalisation, the print media branch focussed a long time on increasing production efficiency. Accordingly, any type of print media product always followed digital processes. That is a good thing. But, the effectiveness of print as a cross-linkable medium in the digital age was given short shrift and now has top priority,” stated Didier Gombert, founder and CEO of technology developer Objectif Lune (OL). For more than 20 years, the visionary entrepreneur has been a pioneer of a new “digital” philosophy that integrates print media topically in the communications mix.

For Gombert, the foundation is the “connect” principle. From one “digital” building block of various solutions, a scalable solution scenario develops that helps both beginners and pros to optimally use print in business and customer communications and always cross-links easily and affordably with digital communication processes. His success proves him right: With 240 employees and 3 development centres in North America, Europe and Australia, OL serves more than 20,000 companies around the world and is supported by a network of qualified partners. For Gombert, theme highlights at drupa 2016 are new communications tasks that are “beyond technology” so to say, such as “customer experience” and “customer journey”. This is understood to (further) develop 100% market and customer-oriented products and solutions in a dialogue with the customer. In focus: optimal interfaces between man-machine — machine-machine — machine-man.

ValuePublishing Big Data Visuals.002

From Pipelines to Platforms

Up to now, print production processes have followed a rigid, linear workflow scenario: Data are edited digitally, formatted with expert tools and then prepared unalterably for print. People tell the machine, so to say, what to do. An innovative approach, therefore, is to dissolve this rigid process, whereby data from various sources can be processed online or offline, from analogue to digital and vice-versa — quasi as an iterative process – seamlessly transformed and automatically enriched with customised and “on-demand” output per digital printing. Seen from a technical workflow angle, a pipeline process is transferred to a cross-linked interactive platform concept that offers new forms of connectivity.

Interesting stimuli are also coming in this context from post-press processing and paper technology. For automation, paper technology specialist BW Papersystems banks on a new type of online remote service such as its ExpertOnline. Originally conceived as a technical services support, it soon became apparent that masses of machine data from giant paper production plants could be exported and intelligently analysed. From this, production workflows and techniques could be optimised.

On the other hand, BW Papersystems is the first specialised technology manufacturer to rely on dialogue throughout the entire value chain in print production – that is, from pre-media, print, paper and processing technology and application specialists – to enable continuous, fully-automated processes. No continuity in print production can be ensured otherwise. This type of automation is important, especially for online printing and particularly for the latest digital print productions as print production facilities become more efficient in their output and vast amounts of data are accrued. At Onlineprinters/diedruckerei.de, for example, 500,000 customers are served, with up to 4,000 orders carried out per day on an annual average and 1.25 million deliveries per annum.

Conclusion

The handling of “big data” in print production has several dimensions: From the web and social media world or via cloud services, the amount of data is exploding that is being transferred from the virtual world to print; content can be automatically compiled on the basis of intelligent algorithms for masses of customised, needs-oriented print products. On the other hand, huge data streams have to be handled intelligently in production management to be able to produce and deliver efficiently, with quality, without media disruption and as quickly as possible, that is, within the deadline of a day.

By Andreas Weber

Note: This market trend analysis by Andreas Weber appeared in modified form in the drupa run-up special by VDI-nachrichten dated May 13, 2016. VDI-nachrichten addresses a premium reader target group of more than 310,000 technical and innovation experts in German industry.

More than half of all packaging volume worldwide is attributed to printed packaging – and the trend is rising. Packaging printing is thus becoming the most important market of the future for the printing press. This is reflected at the upcoming world’s leading trade fair of the industry, drupa (Dusseldorf, May 31-June 10, 2016). The packaging industry has been booming for years. In 2012, proceeds worldwide were around €600 billion, in 2018 it should be a rich €758 billion. At least, that is what the British market research company Smithers Pira predicts.

The reasons for this are first, the increasing need for packaging in the developing and emerging countries due to rising prosperity and growing populations. China is at the top. Secondly, the packaging sector in the western industrial countries is benefiting from increasing variety and more competition in trade. And thirdly, the volume itself of packaging is growing, as noted here in Germany by the consumer consultancy of North Rhine-Westphalia. For 40% of the packaging contained air.

Boom-market packaging unleashes new printing techniques

That makes it clear why the printing and paper branches are heavily banking on innovation owing to the eye-catching differentiation of packaging. To date, these have been mostly unusual finishing options such as varnish or metallic colours and non-standard configurations of machines and media specially designed for packaging printing.

Up to now, packaging has primarily been printed and finished using flexo, offset, gravure and screen printing processes. These are able to accommodate the high volume as well as quality and cost demands. Together, flexo and offset printing currently cover around two-thirds of the world market for packaging printing. According to Smithers Pira, it had a volume of $415 billion in 2015.

At less than 10%, the proportion of digital printing is still relatively small and thus presents room for growth. This should change though in the midterm with progress being made in digital print technology, because even in packaging the numbers are sinking. And then there is the trend to customisation.

Printed and varnished cardboard and metal sheets should remain the domain of sheet-fed offset printing for the time being. Yet, digital printing is gradually feeling its way into this market. For flexible packaging, flexo printing is dominant in Europe and America; in Asia, it is gravure. The latter is losing ground, however, due to its expense.

For corrugated board and labels, flexo printing is likewise the process most used, although in labels, digital printing is gaining strength. Screen printing was previously used mostly for signs, displays and hollow articles. There, too, digital inkjet printing is gaining importance. Experts assume that the corrugated board wrapping commonly used in e-commerce today will become increasingly more colourful.

German printing press manufacturers are searching for cooperation partners in digital printing

In particular, the German printing press manufacturers Koenig & Bauer (KBA) and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen have been focussing on packaging printing for years. Now it is industrial digital printing that should benefit from global collaborations: KBA cooperated with HP Inc. to harness inkjet printing for itself through HP’s own PageWide printing technology.

Heidelberg and Japanese Fujifilm with its expertise in inkjet printing technology jointly developed a new technology platform within 15 months. The first machine based on this, called Primefire, targets premium quality packaging printing with the inkjet printing of sheets in large format (70cm x 100cm).

Event tip: During drupa 2016, a trade day devoted to packaging and printed electronics will take place on June 2 in the drupa cube in Hall 5. Register at www.drupa.de.

Many new players who have developed additional processes are entering the game owing to the trend to packaging printing, particularly from Israel. These include new digital printing technologies such as the one from Landa Nanography. Scodix has developed digital finishing machines and Highcon relies on laser-based high-speed presses for folding carton. Pure digital printing technology experts such as Canon and Xerox also want to leverage the potential of print applications in packaging including label printing. In printed electronics this includes the integration of Near Field Communication (NFC) that can be processed in inkjet printing.

KBA boss Claus Bolza-Schünemann, in his position as president of the world’s leading trade fair drupa, strikes a blow for packaging printing. For its content, printed packaging serves a protective, preservative, promotional and increasingly also a communicative function. Here the topic of consumer protection comes to mind with respective notices on packaging. What’s more, packaging cannot be replaced by flat screens or smartphones. Unlike with printed newspapers or catalogues, it is not affected by changing media behaviour, but rather benefits from it. More single households with a preference for convenience foods and the booming online mail-order trade are likewise growth drivers.

What can be easily overlooked in the classic printing sector is the interplay of multichannel solutions in marketing, “augmented reality” and personalised advertising. This combination can make any type of packaging become the starting point of new contact and dialogue opportunities with the buyer through “augmented reality” and therefore represents enormous potential for brand-name companies.

To realise this, digital printing is vital. Only with it can the printed image be varied ad hoc. New multichannel software solutions such as those from Xerox subsidiary XMPie enable packaging to be personalised and thus become a part of a measurable marketing campaign.

Multi-coloured muesli containers are the market of the future

But there are also some obstacles: Fogra, the Munich-based graphic technology research association has found out that the print image quality of inkjet printing can easily result in a very “ragged” print image. This cannot be seen with the naked eye, but causes problems particularly with barcodes. The highly sensitive barcode readers then generate error messages. Any printer that has produced high print-runs with poorly printed barcodes that then cause reader errors has a huge problem.

One of the most exciting packaging printing projects was realised by Heidelberg in tandem with online start-up mymuesli.com at the beginning of the year. Mymuesli.com is a mail-order company for customised muesli. After initial success, the online company opened shops and online print expert Bernd Zipper came up with the idea that people buying muesli on-site could print their own muesli packaging – and not just a label – using an iPad.

That was made possible thanks to a printing technology from Heidelberg called 4D in which the object to be printed is fixed inside the cabin of the printing press and is then printed by movable inkjet print heads. The online editing and process management stems from Longo, Augsburg. The result is a muesli container with personalised text, self-designed and produced in real-time. The customers love it and it is now to go into production.

ValuePublishing Facts:
drupa president Bolza-Schünemann listed the following reasons for the strong, sustained growth of packaging:

  1. Printed packaging serves a protective, preservative, and advertising function for its contents and, increasingly, a communication function, too. Just think of consumer protection with appropriate references on the packaging.
  2. Packaging cannot be replaced by flatscreens or smartphones. Unlike printed newspapers or catalogs, it remains unaffected by the changed media behavior and actually tends to benefit from this.
  3. The global population is rising and international prosperity is increasing. The middle class with disposable income is growing in emerging markets such as China, India, and Brazil. Growing prosperity goes hand in hand with higher consumption and that in turn means more packaging and printing, all the more since shopping malls are springing up everywhere in emerging markets, too.
  4. Packaging is becoming increasingly classy and sophisticated – the only way to attract the necessary attention at the point of sale. This trend results in greater added value for the printing industry and machines with more elaborate configurations for the supply industry.
  5. More single-person households with a preference for ready meals and the booming online mail-order business are also driving growth.

package printing 1c_1100x290

Boom-Markt Verpackung entfesselt neue Print-Techniken

ValuePublishing VDMA pre-drupa Pressekonferenz 2016.001

By Andreas Weber | GERMAN version

My comments: This was probably the most productive and therefore the most important event (with the business press) associated with drupa. Yes, market figures were given, but only as a guideline and to demonstrate that print is a growth market. The focus was far more on explaining from various perspectives how successful print business has transformed. No doubt some things will sound familiar. The important thing, though, in the run-up to drupa 2016 – which must cover a wider range of topics and exhibits than ever before – was to clearly establish the true context. And it was revealing to see how wholeheartedly all the key players (in this case the main decision-makers) at drupa, the world’s number one industry trade show, are behind their statements and publicity.

There’s no doubt about it – the world of printing isn’t what it used to be, but people have stopped bemoaning this fact and pressed the reset button. Nonetheless, anyone who still believes buying new equipment will ensure business success is mistaken and will fail. The new recipe for success will include holistic thinking outside the box, a comprehensive knowledge and excellent command of all process steps, automation, and the right, enlightened approach to digitization in the context of the sudden and rapid change in the demands placed on the printing sector.

In what was in my personal opinion the key speech, Dr. Gerold Linzbach talked about the true significance of digitization. Here’s an extract: “We’ve taken the vital step from focusing on technology to focusing on customers. (…) The benefit to customers is the top priority. We don’t simply apply technology for the sake of it.”

As Linzbach stressed, technology has to deliver “the optimum benefit for our customers and ultimately for whatever takes the industry forward.”

Welcome to the “Haus des Buches”

My report: The time and place for the exclusive pre-drupa business press conference were well chosen. We met on April 4, 2016 at the Haus des Buches (literally: house of the book) in the heart of Frankfurt am Main, a key financial center. The topics under discussion were market analysis, packaging, Print 4.0, and digitization. Our host was Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association, who optimistically pronounced: “Print is an industry with a future.” As he sees it, print products are more than ever an everyday part of our lives and exhibit greater diversity than ever before. In his brief words of welcome, Messe Düsseldorf President and CEO Werner Matthias Dornscheidt was confident that the preparations for drupa 2016 couldn’t have gone better and it would be a resounding success, with appealing special events such as the drupa cube and an excellent supporting program providing the icing on the cake.

Broad-based dynamic growth

“The global trend toward flexibilization and automation is currently playing into our hands. Germany’s press and paper machine manufacturers have been more successful than virtually any other mechanical engineering sector in making Industry 4.0 a reality,” continued Dr. Heering. Print 4.0, he said, was supporting Industry 4.0, and the extent to which print shops can improve their productivity and flexibility using fully networked digital work processes was already evident. Incoming orders for printing and paper technology were 10 percent up on the previous year in 2015, while press manufacturers saw a 9 percent increase in orders along with a slight fall in sales, especially in Germany. For manufacturers of postpress equipment, the increase in orders was as high as 21 percent. As Dr. Heering explained, “The sales figures also show it’s a long time since postpress technology was in such high demand. Sales climbed 13 percent in Germany and 9 percent in other countries.” He sees this as good reason to approach drupa 2016, the industry’s leading trade show worldwide, with renewed energy.

According to the VDMA, the key elements of networking and flexibility are emerging as visions and guiding principles for printing press and paper machine manufacturers, and there are three topic areas to be addressed:

  1. Flexibility in meeting specific customer needs
  2. Merging of technologies and functions
  3. Cooperation and standardization of interfaces

The focus is on the declared goal of strengthening print and paper by moving into new applications.

Packaging printing as a driver of print shop business

drupa president Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman of the Executive Board of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), trained the spotlight on the packaging sector as a growth driver, stressing that traditional printing methods are leading the way here and are indispensable for the time being, but digital printing offers the possibility of new uses. “Together, flexographic and offset printing currently account for around two-thirds of the international packaging printing market, which was valued by Smithers PIRA at around US$415 billion in 2015. Digital printing’s share is still relatively small at approximately 3 percent, which leaves plenty of room for growth,” he said, adding that the packaging market for print shops is growing at a high level of 4 to 5 percent annually.

Bolza-Schünemann underlined that the total global sales volume for print was so high that it was hard to imagine. According to forecasts, sales will rise from their current level of just over US$900 billion to almost US$1 trillion by 2018. “The fact that ten years ago KBA was still generating a good 60 percent of Group sales in media-oriented print markets and only around 20 percent in packaging printing highlights the extent to which the printing world has shifted in the direction of packaging. Not entirely unintentionally, packaging now accounts for over 60 percent and publication printing just over 10 percent,” added the drupa president. In addition to outer packaging with high design and production standards, everyday packaging is now also becoming more important. Bolza-Schünemann is expecting the brown corrugated cardboard packaging currently used as standard in e-commerce to become increasingly colorful and believes this makes high-performance rotary inkjet printing ideal for the corrugated cardboard market.

My interim comments:

Global sales figures always sound good. And the prospect of print media manufacturers soon generating US$1 trillion is impressive, but at the same time highly abstract. Newspapers such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung did pick up on this after the VDMA business press event, referring to signs of life from the world of printing on page 18 of its April 5, 2016 edition, confirming that print is a growth market, and pointing out that the printing industry’s turnover exceeds that of the automotive industry – but what does that really tell us? What’s more, these figures have been around for nearly 15 years. manroland AG defined them as the basis for its market research, but they were evidently little use given that the company went bankrupt. Far more exciting in my view is the question (which is not easy to answer) of the role print media are playing in the improvement in overall macroeconomic performance. If packaging is now being called the printing industry’s growth driver, all companies that are looking to physically sell products must focus 100 percent on print. That’s a clear and obvious statement, isn’t it? The imaging group Canon – also known for excellent specialist surveys about print and multichannel applications – has developed a convincing chart and is using it for
presentations. This makes the significance of print even clearer!

drupa president Bolza-Schünemann listed the following reasons for the strong, sustained growth of packaging:

What’s more, the influence of multichannel solutions, augmented reality, and personalization – which make all types of packaging the starting point for new contact and dialog options with the buyer – is creating huge potential for brand organizations (see the ValueDialog with multichannel developer Jacob Aizikowitz).

Kai Büntemeyer

The only solution – digital networking of the entire value-added chain

Businessman Kai Büntemeyer, Chairman of the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association and Managing Partner of Kolbus GmbH & Co KG, dismissed the prejudiced view that postpress is more or less an add-on to print media production. He warned against being tempted by offers to buy attractive new presses without thinking, and thus failing to consider the entire process chain and assess all networking options within and outside the print shop. It’s essential to have “a process world characterized by interoperability, open systems, and harmonized interfaces. The speed of the evolutionary processes under Print 4.0 stands and falls with the transparency of the players involved,” emphasized Büntemeyer, citing the example of the interface syntax provided by his company to download free of charge.

In the case of the printing and paper industry, he said it was important to distinguish between digitization on the one hand and digital printing on the other: “Digital inkjet printing is simply another process to be integrated into digitized process chains in the same way as conventional offset, flexographic or gravure printing. The printing process is just a small part of the complete chain.”

According to Büntemeyer, the overall process chain is as follows:

  • It starts with the receipt of digital job data;
  • continues with software-based job planning for optimized machine capacity utilization with minimal makeready times;
  • includes purchasing and HR planning;
  • and naturally all prepress and postpress process steps;
  • and it only ends with automated packaging, addressing, and shipping of the print products.

Although all this has long been established, he explained, it is only now feasible thanks to today’s high-performance technology, because only very recently have processor capacities, real-time communication, and big data software solutions enabled implementation in a way that is geared to the market.

Büntemeyer developed the following scenario, which shows postpress in a whole new light: “Sensory inline monitoring ensures consistently high quality, but the data collected can unlock added value. Monitoring the status of machines makes it possible to carry out preventive repairs, which enables downtimes to be planned. And service specialists can rectify many a fault remotely. The data collected is also used for anonymized benchmark comparisons in cutting-edge printing systems. Users can compare their performance and productivity with that of other users of the same systems.”

However, Büntemeyer also recognizes that, broadly speaking, the industry’s equipment is lagging behind these possibilities – by at least 10 to 15 years. During this period, there was too little process/solution-oriented thinking and insufficient investment. Networking between print shops is also recommended.

My interim comments:

It’s good that this has now been made clear, because I conclude that it’s ultimately no longer a case of optimizing details and maintaining the traditional silo mentality. New, sometimes disruptive, holistic, automated business processes and the corresponding reorientation of business models are now the order of the day. (N.B.: The 4th Online Print Symposium, which took place in Munich on March 17 and 18, 2015, revealed how far this has already progressed at extremely successful online print shops such as Onlineprinters, Flyeralarm, United Print, and CIMPRESS (see the article entitled “Zipper’s Insights: reporting from the 4th Online Print Symposium”).

Dr. Gerold Linzbach, CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, has realigned Heidelberg to focus on customers. Video: Andreas Weber (in german language).

“Digitization isn’t the same as digital printing!”

Dr. Gerold Linzbach, CEO of industry leader Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, followed his statement at the VDMA press event by summing up the company’s new role: “We’ve taken the vital step from focusing on technology to focusing on customers.” He said it was important not to make digitization just another buzz word that everyone uses without really knowing what it means or agreeing on a standard definition.

According to Dr. Linzbach, Heidelberg has, in discussions with customers and numerous market partners, defined three essential elements or levels of digitization for the print market. When understood correctly, digitization thus makes it possible to embrace the digital era through the automation and flexibilization of print.

The first essential element is networking in the sense of automatically passing on data (for press and downstream postpress operations) between machines with adequate interfaces to make all process steps transparent to users. Especially these days, when fragmented order books set the rhythm, automation through networking is absolutely vital. It’s the only way Heidelberg customers can, among other things, complete 3,000 or more orders per day. Success in smoothly incorporating digital printing systems via the print shop network also really pays off. In a short space of time, this has enabled Heidelberg sales staff to succeed in selling 1,000 OEM digital printing systems from Ricoh to print shops.

Once the job data has been received, the customer – that is to say the print shop – is automatically relieved of the decision as to the best production process to use, i.e. offset or digital printing. According to Dr. Linzbach, then, it’s all about seamless integration of all production resources that a print shop must use to minimize the data handling outlay. This is already standard in online printing and will spread to all areas of the printing industry. It’s also necessary if, as in the area of packaging, there is a huge increase in the amount of documentation required to prove, for example, that food was packaged in line with regulations.

Dr. Gerold Linzbach at the press conference. Photos: Andreas Weber

The second essential element is the variabilization of print, that is to say personalization or customization in the sense of frequently changing the print content, together with a wide variety of substrates/printing stock – by its very nature a strength of digital printing processes. Heidelberg has configured and developed a whole package of digital printing solutions for drupa 2016. This even involves printing at different locations, for example end customers printing muesli packaging with personalized designs at the mymuesli.com shop.

Connectivity plays an important role. According to Dr. Linzbach, it’s a mistake simply to rely on equipping presses with thousands of sensors that can read data in seconds and then store it in huge volumes. For a responsible technology manufacturer like Heidelberg, the challenge is to move from big data to smart data. In other words, data that is essentially suitable for any use needs to be filtered, selecting only the most important details from the mass of job, customer, and application data – that is to say the very things that are really relevant. It must be possible for this to happen automatically. To stop this sounding too theoretical, Dr. Linzbach gave an example. Heidelberg will be creating an e-commerce platform that automatically tells customers, for example, if something they order is incompatible with the equipment installed at their company. The aim must be to avoid outlay and above all mistakes, and to lessen customers’ workloads so that they can concentrate on their core activities.

Dr. Linzbach holds out the prospect of soon being able to operate even the most complicated technologies very easily, almost at the touch of a button – just like smartphones and tablets, which operate in a virtually self-explanatory way and produce exactly the desired results without the consumer needing to know about each and every technical function.

This is the only way to ensure that customers from the print shop sector can get on with their real work. According to Dr. Linzbach, the main task of someone running a print shop is not to deliver perfect print quality – that must be ensured by the company providing the technology – but above all to manage jobs and high order volumes, undertake marketing activities, and maintain contacts with customers.

And that brings us to the third essential element of digitization –reduce to the max using appropriate filters developed from customer and application know-how to combine all the technical possibilities and focus on what is actually relevant so as to turn data into productive information.

Dr. Linzbach’s conclusion: “The benefit to customers is the top priority. We don’t simply apply technology for the sake of it, nor do we simply install the maximum that is technically possible. We always try to combine it in such a way as to offer the optimum benefit for our customers and ultimately for whatever takes the industry forward.”

At the beginning of December 2015, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (Heideldruck for short) was the first company in the sector to announce its plans for drupa 2016. Both the new corporate strategy and the newly developed products and solutions sound promising. Following the interview with board member Harald Weimer about services, we are putting some more in-depth questions to Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment, who caused a global stir in February 2016 when he unveiled the new Primefire 106 system technology for industrial inkjet printing.

Heideldruck Smart Printshop

Introduction

Gone are the days when the printing industry was regarded as a respected, venerable and noble trade. Printers are now no longer measured in terms of their survival skills during their ceremonial inauguration into the trade, but on the speed, efficiency, and intelligence and thus the profitably of their printing business. Heidelberg is keen to help today’s printing specialists gear this business to the digitized world and has come up with a number of ideas driven by its own transformation process.

Michael Seidl, ValuePublishing Partner, EMGroup, Vienna, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Print & Publishing, interviews Stephan Plenz | German version available

Heidelberg has a number of exciting developments to coincide with drupa. Could you give us an idea of your activities and plans?

Stephan Plenz: “Simply Smart” is the motto for our presentation of the print media industry’s digitized future at drupa. Essentially, it’s a case of integrating all processes into a coherent value creation system for print shops. That’s exactly what we mean by smart services, the smart print shop, and smart collaboration. It’s our way of combining everything we need to provide our customers with straightforward solutions that work. Market requirements remain complex and we can’t do anything about that. What we can do, though, is offer our customers a workflow that makes life easier. That’s the basic idea we’ve been developing for years and it’s the subject of much discussion in the context of Industry 4.0. It requires equipment that can make things easier and that can both understand and supply the pertinent information. It requires a workflow that is capable of processing and managing everything. And it requires people to describe, create, and further develop the relevant processes.

… And how does that work?

Stephan Plenz: Everyone in the various sections needs to be up to the mark for it to work. We’re very well placed in terms of equipment with our new user interface, because it will also help ensure things go smoothly. And we’re leading the way with our new digital press and the other solutions on show with the Speedmaster XL at drupa 2016. I’m talking about the machine concept and the existing workflow, which will be further augmented with web functions such as the Prinect Media Manager, giving our customers the potential to manage data – i.e. media – even though it is no longer simply output in printed form. All services derived from the data will subsequently be incorporated and will help make many processes more efficient.

Prinect Media Manager

In your presentation, you said that we should not only write about the new Heidelberg presses, but focus more on a company that sees itself as a system partner. Could you expand a little on that and explain what exactly you understand by industrialization?

Stephan Plenz: The slogan “More than machines” doesn’t mean that machines will cease to be important, but rather that a smart machine is needed that optimizes its performance when networked with other equipment. In other words, I first need a machine that is capable of this. The link is the key to automating processes through industrialization. It involves prepress operations that use the system for automated communication with the press rather than simply sending JDFs. The full scope of communication is vital, simplifying the job queue and ensuring the correct job sequence so as to minimize setup times. The sensors in the machines must also understand what is being communicated and apply it accordingly.

One-button operation has been the goal for some time now. How close are you to achieving this?

Stephan Plenz: That’s right, we have indeed been pursuing this goal for some time. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be where we are now. The aim is to get the process running in as few steps as possible. It goes without saying that it’s important for operators to perform these steps correctly. And the fewer steps are needed, the more efficient the system will be.

If you look at the big online print shops now, their level of industrialization is already very high, isn’t it?

Stephan Plenz: What we’ll be exhibiting at drupa 2016 will take this a significant step further. That applies above all to the data evaluation applications we’re pursuing in collaboration with our customers. Questions in this connection include “How can we improve maintenance?”, “What form can preventive maintenance take?” and “How can we use the data for automated ordering, call-off, and supply of consumables so that the entire print shop process runs far more efficiently?”. We know that the number of jobs will increase, but not print shops’ sales. That means the administrative costs for each job need to be reduced as effectively as possible. Otherwise, the large number of jobs generating less revenue will ultimately put print shops under pressure.

Heideldruck Prozessmanagement

It is true that this applies not only to large print shops but also to SMEs?

Stephan Plenz: Yes, that’s right. Large companies aren’t the only ones affected. We’re discussing these issues with customers from companies of all sizes. We offer them different solution packages of course, but the requirements are the same.

It sounds very much like the future scenario will involve working with as few people as possible. Is that the case?

Stephan Plenz: Systems need to help people make as few mistakes as possible and concentrate on what’s really important, such as quality control and checking waste is minimized. At the end of the day, the operator needs to stand at the press and monitor the process – not simply apply the ink and certainly not wander around with plates. That doesn’t create value. In highly productive businesses, one faulty job is now all it takes to mess up an entire shift.

Are digital systems now intended to complement conventional offset presses?

Stephan Plenz: Yes, we’ve now taken things to the next level. We’ve optimized and automated the processes further still and made things far more transparent for operators and print shop management. The key questions in this respect include “What’s happening right now?”, “What do I need to look out for?” “What should I do if I can see from the job queue that plates are required?”, “What materials do I need?”, “Which inks, which coatings, which paper, etc.?”. All the answers are required before the job arrives. Essentially, we know everything we need to while the job is still being processed in the prepress department. Take the example of a job that needs to be ready by noon the next day. The system identifies a coating is needed that isn’t in stock.

How has this been dealt with to date?

Stephan Plenz: What happens all too often at present is that we wait till things go wrong! It’s only a partial fix for the system to say the coating needs to be ordered. It may actually be ordered, but it could also be forgotten or overlooked. So why doesn’t the system automatically place an order itself via our e-commerce platform? The buyer then gets a message that this has been done, that the coating arrived on time, and that it was called off at the negotiated prices. Why should someone adopt a process of this kind in the future? That’s the world we need to create.

Digital printing is now all about implementing concepts of this kind. Isn’t it a little late for Heidelberg to be looking to get involved?

Stephan Plenz: Not as I see it. There’s still room for us. We re-entered the market for digital printing systems in 2011 with the Linoprint systems [collaboration with Ricoh, ed. note], which we recently renamed Heidelberg Versafire. These have enjoyed great market success, especially over the past year in conjunction with our DFE – our digital front end. The positive market feedback the Gallus Labelfire 340 is getting makes us very optimistic. And our new B1 inkjet system technology – the Heidelberg Primefire 106 – might well be one of the highlights of drupa. We’re not looking to be the number one for everything, but we want to lead the way in implementing effective industrial, digital solutions. For us, it’s not about putting on a big show or getting lots of people in the hall. It’s about offering an effective industrial solution for digital printers. We’ve kept to our product roadmap statements in developing the new digital presses and nothing should change in that respect. The Primefire will undergo field tests this year and series production will start next year.

There was an interesting Q&A session during the Heideldruck press event on 19 February 2016. Video by Andreas Weber va iPad. — See as well our ValuePublishing real-time report via Storify.

Presumably, you won’t be revealing how much has been invested in developing the Primefire 106?

Stephan Plenz: We aren’t publicizing that. A good half of our R&D budget is currently going into digital applications. Don’t forget that we’ve developed a machine concept in record time that has everything the industry expects and demands of such a system, but then we did have the best possible starting point. We have a paper transfer system that is tried and tested in industry, our Prinect workflow, and Fujifilm – the strongest imaginable inkjet partner. Despite all these positives, it remains a challenge to create a press that ultimately meets customers’ needs.

Talking of Fujifilm, there’s clearly great chemistry between the two companies, isn’t there?

Stephan Plenz: Definitely, we’ve got excellent chemistry. We need to deal with the different cultures of a German and a Japanese company. There are always issues to be resolved and we approach these very openly with Fuji. Fujifilm and Heidelberg had a unique opportunity, because both companies needed to build a press to satisfy the industrial market and its needs. Each partner has some knowledge and expertise that the other doesn’t. Nonetheless, it’s a Herculean task to put everything together and produce a press that works. But we were starting from the ideal position. What’s more, there are good reasons why Fujifilm decided to work with Heidelberg even though it’s pressing ahead with its own JetPress development in a different format and could also have built a press in B1 format. In our case, though, we wanted to get the best of both worlds and have created a partnership of equals.

Will Fujifilm be marketing the press itself on the Asian markets?

Stephan Plenz: It’s too soon to make a definite statement about that. Both Fujifilm and Heidelberg are planning sales and marketing activities for the new system. What is certain is that we’ll be selling the Primefire on all markets on which Heidelberg is represented. We developed the press jointly, so Fujifilm will also be offering it to its own customers.

Something else I’d be interested to know in the “smart and cool” context is do you feel this new way of thinking at Heidelberg has been fully taken on board?

Stephan Plenz: Being smart has nothing to do with being cool. A company must have the ability to keep reinventing itself in a changed environment. Heidelberg was a completely different company in the 1980s and 1990s than in the new Millennium, certainly up till 2010. The changes we’ve initiated with strategies such as partnerships and the adjustments the changes in this industry have forced us to make – which admittedly weren’t always easy – have taken us another step forward. We’ve realigned and rebranded Heidelberg.

04_Stephan_Plenz

In your opinion, what are the most important aspects of this realignment?

Stephan Plenz: The things we’ve begun to change in recent years are now becoming apparent, starting with the logo, the rebranding, and the products. We’ve been in the process of building up a digital portfolio since 2010. That requires a clear strategy, stamina, and patience. It’s difficult to say whether that’s already been taken on board throughout the company. I believe we’ve made good use of the post-crisis period, geared our activities to the future, and regained the strength required to show the outside world what we’ve achieved. This isn’t the result of a process with four weeks of workshops and a new logo. It’s a reflection of something different, something new – and the result of the change we’re striving for with this company. It was a case of keeping the positive things about Heidelberg, leaving behind the less positive things, and setting about repositioning the company.

Do you have a target sales figure in mind for digital printing business at Heidelberg?

Stephan Plenz: We’ve said that in the medium term we’re looking to generate sales of over 200 million euros and we’ll definitely achieve that, maybe even a little more.

What are your expectations for drupa 2016 in terms of sales and visitor numbers?

Stephan Plenz: They’re very high for our new developments. The drupa trade show in Düsseldorf gives us the opportunity to present the company, the repositioning, and naturally new products, solutions, and innovations to our customers. To coincide with Düsseldorf, however, we’ll also be exhibiting our entire existing portfolio at our Wiesloch-Walldorf site. We’re delighted with the level of interest and expect to generate a significant number of orders. I think we can be very proud that we really do have something significant to show people.

So drupa 2016 has come at the right time, then?

Stephan Plenz: You could say that, yes, and such opportunities are vital. But in truth it’s not a case of whether 250,000 or 200,000 people pass through the drupa turnstiles. The important thing for us is that we attract the relevant customers. They have to be there and we’ll grasp the opportunity to get talking to them and answer their questions. We’re well prepared.

In contrast to previous drupa trade shows, partnerships will play a very big role at the Heidelberg stand, won’t they?

Stephan Plenz: That’s right. And our approach is also different and new. There are no longer individual companies in the hall simply exhibiting their own products. We have a coherent concept that we’re all presenting jointly.

Thank you for this interview.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 05 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen 45 articles go online since last Monday, including new additions to our FESPA and drupa Newsrooms, and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog from last Monday.

Major announcements this week include Xerox poised to separate into two public companies in a major structural review in Monday’s headlines, along with its latest figures for Q4 and 2015. These were carried over from Saturday a week ago’s late additions, together with Andreas Weber’s take on the announcement. Tuesday’s headlines were led by UPM-Kymmene’s extremely positive Interim Report for Q4 and 2015.

Wednesday saw this week’s most impressive order for Screen highlighted, as Screen accelerates its expansion into the Chinese digital press market with an order for no less than eight Truepress Jet520HD high-speed inkjet presses; while Heidelberg UK announces the appointment of a new Finance Director, succeeding Roderich Kirschenlohr who has returned to Germany, but remains within the Heidelberg Group.

On Thursday Ricoh South Africa took the lead, as it announces that it has extended its South African marketing programme by including digital channels that feed an analytics system. The system includes digital content marketing that includes blogs, social media channels including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, automated e-mail newsletters, as well as an engagement tracking and escalation system linked to its customer relationship management (CRM) tool, with ties to the sales and marketing teams. Esti Kilian, newly appointed GM of marketing operations, explains more in the article below. Thursday also saw a new key appointment within UPM, as Winfried Schaur is appointed executive vice president responsible for UPM Paper in Europe and North America.

Friday saw drupa 2016 take the lead once more, as it announces its primary partner for development and delivery of innovative content for the drupa cube 2016, as international innovation firm The Medici Group, and its founder and CEO Frans Johansson, who are set to spur out-of-the-box thinking throughout the duration of the show.

Johansson caused somewhat of a furore with his 2004 book ‘The Medici Effect’, and since then has been ‘the’ go-to expert for the concepts of thinking and acting outside fixed limits and the “out-of-the-box principle”. Worldwide brands such as American Express, IBM, Nike, Volvo and The Walt Disney Company have already drawn on the strategic expertise of The Medici Group. Now drupa 2016 will do the same in drupa cube.

‘With The Medici Group, we have precisely the right partner at our side for drupa cube. A consistent approach to change management is absolutely necessary to master the challenges in the print, packaging and media sectors,’ said Sabine Geldermann, director of drupa, ‘and we are extremely pleased that we will be presenting a high quality and clearly structured programme that will appeal both to the print and media industry, as well as to web agencies, brands and print buyers, with The Medici Group and other impressive thought leaders at its core.’

More outstanding recent sales and installations this week include Imprimerie de l’Avesnois in France on Friday, as it commissions a Kodak Prosper 6000C high-speed inkjet line with FoldLine finishing from Manroland Web Systems. You’ll also find more this week from KBA in Japan and North America; CHILI Publish in North America; IFS with Horizon; and Edale in the UK, Heidelberg in the USA; and lastly from Fujifilm in the UK with more inkjet.

New kit this week is led by Canon on Tuesday, as it announced the global launch of the new Océ Arizona 1200 Series of UV flatbed printers. Also on Tuesday, System Brunner’s Instrument Flight colour control software with KBA Inline QualiTronic Color Control. On Thursday KBA also returned with its new TouchTronic user interface.

A tailender for you this week from FINAT on Thursday, as it lists its key labelling community activity events for 2016, comprising ts Labelling Competition, Technical Seminars, Webinars Series’, Young Managers Congress, European Label Forum, and much more.

There’s a lot more for you to explore below if you scroll down carefully.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

With my best regards,

Mike Hilton

The first results of the 2nd drupa Global Insights Report “Touch the future – Applications that can create growth” are out now. Implementing new print applications is for many the best way to regain growth in the demand for print.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 16 November 2015

Welcome to another week of news highlights with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 13 November, which examines an ongoing European initiative linked to the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) directive which could perhaps spell the end of gravure printing in Europe. For the full article, please visit our Verdigris environmental section. The link appears below, or via the index on our Website.

The week’s news began with Durst at ITMA, where the company launched a new series of super high-performance multi-pass inkjet printers for digital textile production and a new pigmented ink; while Goss International’s new owners have announced the appointment of a new president and chief executive officer. Tuesday saw KBA publish its third quarter 2015 figures, having achieved a pre-tax profit with a turnaround in earnings and with continued solid order intake. It really is beginning to look good.

On Wednesday, Messe Düsseldorf led the headlines as it announced that its Second Global Insights Report is nearing completion and will be available soon in English (and in 7 languages overall). The detailed announcement appears in both English and German in our drupa Newsroom, Please don’t miss it. Bobst also in the headlines with a Gold Award at FEFCO 2015 in Barcelona, for its advanced digital inkjet corrugated press which uses Kodak’s high-speed Stream Inkjet technology.

On Thursday, Sappi Limited published its results for the fourth quarter and full 2015 financial year and is also looking good, with a strong performance and with full year earnings per share excluding special items up 55% for the financial year ended 30 September. FESPA announced its call for entries for the 2016 Awards, marking the start of its search for pioneering and innovative projects in the industry.

Friday’s headlines began with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen revealing that it is on course after the first half of financial year 2015/2016, with sales and result up on the previous year. The second half was also boosted by the sale of the company’s central-Heidelberg headquarters which was posted as income.

You will find quite a number of show-related articles again this week, led by EFI Reggiani on Tuesday, as it showcased new innovations in textile technology at ITMA 2015, including the debut of the new ReNOIR NEXT system. Then we have Mimaki with new inks. Also DuPont and EFI Reggiani on Wednesday, with new inks. Then we have ColorGATE at InPrint in Munich. You will also find an announcement from Baumer on Friday with the world première of a new Tesla family of innovative, high-performance application heads for hot melt adhesives, out of the recent FachPack show in Nuremberg.

A selection of sales and installations successes began with numerous sales from Duplo on Monday out of its recent and successful London Calling event. There’s also a separate announcement from Rapidity with Duplo. On Wednesday Goss International announced that Sandhills Publishing has invested in a new eight-unit Sunday 2000 web press and Pacesetter high-speed saddlestitcher; while EDS Group chose Manroland Web Systems for its latest Lithoman relocation and a Lithoman upgrade. On Thursday Heidelberg UK announced that a Speedmaster XL 75-5+L will be delivered to Thomson Print & Packaging in Edinburgh, Scotland early next year; and the first all-in-one design and print shop in Cape Town’s exclusive Atlantic seaboard suburb of Sea Point, All@OneStop, has added a Xerox press from Bytes.

On Friday, Altacel Flexible Packaging in Weesp, The Netherlands, announced that it has recently fired up a gearless 10-colour KBA-Flexotecnica EVO XG flexo press. This article also appears in Online Features to enable additional photographs to be included, so please don’t miss it. It’s stunning!  Also on this day, independently-owned South African print and design store Wizardz has added a new Xerox Colour C70 printer in TygerValley, Cape Town; while also in South Africa, JMB Labels has invested in a second MPS flexo press and first EB machine in Africa for its Amalgam, Johannesburg plant.

If you work down the list carefully, you will also find other key announcements this week from Xeikon, Gandy, Ricoh Europe with Elsevier, UPM at the CBD Business and Biodiversity Forum 2015 in Helsinki, and from Imaging Solutions and Taopix, among others.

Until next time. My best regards,

Mike Hilton

— Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. med. Ernst Pöppel, Wissenschaftler und Forscher

ValuePublishing — Innovative B2B Communication Solutions

In Echtzeit. Multimedial. Markt-,
kunden- und bedarfsorientiert.

ValuePublishing Teil 3 Facts Figures Zielgruppen Reichweite UPDATE SELFRUNNING.005

„Innovative Technologien und Lösungen muss man auch durchgängig innovativ kommunizieren! In Echtzeit. Multimedial.
