Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 13 May 2016

Welcome to another roundup of 29 news highlights for the past week together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday, which this week discusses the World Economic Forum and its Project Mainstream’s most recent white paper, which deals with paper.

We also have three new additions in Online Features Chapter 05, highlighting UPM Biofore in Beijing with a unique project which has little to do with printing or paper, but is just too beautiful and stunning to ignore; then we have the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for Q2; and then SF Taylor in the UK with its new KBA Rapida 75.

You will also find a new drupa ante portas Blog article featuring Objectif Lune, by Andreas Weber, as well as another 14 new additions in our drupa Newsroom from Exhibitors. These are led by KBA Digital, Hybrid Software, Heidelberg Workflow, Heidelberg CTP, Durst Inkjet, Tecnau, Agfa Graphics CTP, Leonhard KURZ with a new foil; Chili Publish, Domino with high-speed Inkjet; Fujifilm wide-format Inkjet, Alwan Color Expertise, and Techawa, and these latest additions now bring the total of pre-show announcements to 188, with just two weeks to go before the show opens its doors a fortnight tomorrow on Tuesday 31 May.

Major news leads with week came from Sappi on Monday with its Q2 and half-year 2016 results which were excellent; then on Tuesday from Heidelberg with its preliminary figures for 2015/2016 and also very positive and correspond to a Euro 100 million turnaround. On Wednesday, KBA announced its new Website for the Group; and on Thursday we had KBA’s interim Q1 report for 2016. Friday saw the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for Q2 take the lead.

This week has seen a few nice sales and installations successes, and also some new kit which is non-drupa related, specifically from Agfa Graphics with PrintSphere, a cloud-based data exchange service for PSPs, and from Quark on Friday. You’ll also find a couple of software upgrades.

Recent sales and installations kicked off on Monday with IFS and Horizon at Windsor Print; Tuesday saw Bertelsmann Printing Group’s direct mail and document solutions division, Campaign, opts for Screen’s Truepress Jet 520ZZ inkjet system for direct marketing; also ProImage with OnColor in the USA. On Wednesday, Muller Martini highlighted 13 Presto and Presto Digital saddle stitcher installations in the UK and Ireland over the past year, this was followed by Xeikon at DOCUsystem in Frankfurt, Germany. Thursday saw Portuguese fashion printer Blur extend its direct-to-garment business with Kornit Digital‘s Allegro and a Zund cut solution. To round off the week on Friday, Cheadle, UK-based Cestrian Imaging announced a UK first with its EFI Reggiani PRO 340 digital textile inkjet printer purchase; and lastly Manroland Sheetfed highlighted its latest eight-colour Roland 700 press installation in China.

The tailender this week goes to the Ghent Workgroup, which welcomed two new members on board: Ricoh and CHILI Publish, in the headlines on Wednesday.

That’s it until next time. I hope you find more of interest among the links below.
With my best regards,
Mike Hilton

At the beginning of December 2015, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (Heideldruck for short) was the first company in the sector to announce its plans for drupa 2016. Both the new corporate strategy and the newly developed products and solutions sound promising. Following the interview with board member Harald Weimer about services, we are putting some more in-depth questions to Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment, who caused a global stir in February 2016 when he unveiled the new Primefire 106 system technology for industrial inkjet printing.

Heideldruck Smart Printshop

Introduction

Gone are the days when the printing industry was regarded as a respected, venerable and noble trade. Printers are now no longer measured in terms of their survival skills during their ceremonial inauguration into the trade, but on the speed, efficiency, and intelligence and thus the profitably of their printing business. Heidelberg is keen to help today’s printing specialists gear this business to the digitized world and has come up with a number of ideas driven by its own transformation process.

Michael Seidl, ValuePublishing Partner, EMGroup, Vienna, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Print & Publishing, interviews Stephan Plenz | German version available

Heidelberg has a number of exciting developments to coincide with drupa. Could you give us an idea of your activities and plans?

Stephan Plenz: “Simply Smart” is the motto for our presentation of the print media industry’s digitized future at drupa. Essentially, it’s a case of integrating all processes into a coherent value creation system for print shops. That’s exactly what we mean by smart services, the smart print shop, and smart collaboration. It’s our way of combining everything we need to provide our customers with straightforward solutions that work. Market requirements remain complex and we can’t do anything about that. What we can do, though, is offer our customers a workflow that makes life easier. That’s the basic idea we’ve been developing for years and it’s the subject of much discussion in the context of Industry 4.0. It requires equipment that can make things easier and that can both understand and supply the pertinent information. It requires a workflow that is capable of processing and managing everything. And it requires people to describe, create, and further develop the relevant processes.

… And how does that work?

Stephan Plenz: Everyone in the various sections needs to be up to the mark for it to work. We’re very well placed in terms of equipment with our new user interface, because it will also help ensure things go smoothly. And we’re leading the way with our new digital press and the other solutions on show with the Speedmaster XL at drupa 2016. I’m talking about the machine concept and the existing workflow, which will be further augmented with web functions such as the Prinect Media Manager, giving our customers the potential to manage data – i.e. media – even though it is no longer simply output in printed form. All services derived from the data will subsequently be incorporated and will help make many processes more efficient.

Prinect Media Manager

In your presentation, you said that we should not only write about the new Heidelberg presses, but focus more on a company that sees itself as a system partner. Could you expand a little on that and explain what exactly you understand by industrialization?

Stephan Plenz: The slogan “More than machines” doesn’t mean that machines will cease to be important, but rather that a smart machine is needed that optimizes its performance when networked with other equipment. In other words, I first need a machine that is capable of this. The link is the key to automating processes through industrialization. It involves prepress operations that use the system for automated communication with the press rather than simply sending JDFs. The full scope of communication is vital, simplifying the job queue and ensuring the correct job sequence so as to minimize setup times. The sensors in the machines must also understand what is being communicated and apply it accordingly.

One-button operation has been the goal for some time now. How close are you to achieving this?

Stephan Plenz: That’s right, we have indeed been pursuing this goal for some time. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be where we are now. The aim is to get the process running in as few steps as possible. It goes without saying that it’s important for operators to perform these steps correctly. And the fewer steps are needed, the more efficient the system will be.

If you look at the big online print shops now, their level of industrialization is already very high, isn’t it?

Stephan Plenz: What we’ll be exhibiting at drupa 2016 will take this a significant step further. That applies above all to the data evaluation applications we’re pursuing in collaboration with our customers. Questions in this connection include “How can we improve maintenance?”, “What form can preventive maintenance take?” and “How can we use the data for automated ordering, call-off, and supply of consumables so that the entire print shop process runs far more efficiently?”. We know that the number of jobs will increase, but not print shops’ sales. That means the administrative costs for each job need to be reduced as effectively as possible. Otherwise, the large number of jobs generating less revenue will ultimately put print shops under pressure.

Heideldruck Prozessmanagement

It is true that this applies not only to large print shops but also to SMEs?

Stephan Plenz: Yes, that’s right. Large companies aren’t the only ones affected. We’re discussing these issues with customers from companies of all sizes. We offer them different solution packages of course, but the requirements are the same.

It sounds very much like the future scenario will involve working with as few people as possible. Is that the case?

Stephan Plenz: Systems need to help people make as few mistakes as possible and concentrate on what’s really important, such as quality control and checking waste is minimized. At the end of the day, the operator needs to stand at the press and monitor the process – not simply apply the ink and certainly not wander around with plates. That doesn’t create value. In highly productive businesses, one faulty job is now all it takes to mess up an entire shift.

Are digital systems now intended to complement conventional offset presses?

Stephan Plenz: Yes, we’ve now taken things to the next level. We’ve optimized and automated the processes further still and made things far more transparent for operators and print shop management. The key questions in this respect include “What’s happening right now?”, “What do I need to look out for?” “What should I do if I can see from the job queue that plates are required?”, “What materials do I need?”, “Which inks, which coatings, which paper, etc.?”. All the answers are required before the job arrives. Essentially, we know everything we need to while the job is still being processed in the prepress department. Take the example of a job that needs to be ready by noon the next day. The system identifies a coating is needed that isn’t in stock.

How has this been dealt with to date?

Stephan Plenz: What happens all too often at present is that we wait till things go wrong! It’s only a partial fix for the system to say the coating needs to be ordered. It may actually be ordered, but it could also be forgotten or overlooked. So why doesn’t the system automatically place an order itself via our e-commerce platform? The buyer then gets a message that this has been done, that the coating arrived on time, and that it was called off at the negotiated prices. Why should someone adopt a process of this kind in the future? That’s the world we need to create.

Digital printing is now all about implementing concepts of this kind. Isn’t it a little late for Heidelberg to be looking to get involved?

Stephan Plenz: Not as I see it. There’s still room for us. We re-entered the market for digital printing systems in 2011 with the Linoprint systems [collaboration with Ricoh, ed. note], which we recently renamed Heidelberg Versafire. These have enjoyed great market success, especially over the past year in conjunction with our DFE – our digital front end. The positive market feedback the Gallus Labelfire 340 is getting makes us very optimistic. And our new B1 inkjet system technology – the Heidelberg Primefire 106 – might well be one of the highlights of drupa. We’re not looking to be the number one for everything, but we want to lead the way in implementing effective industrial, digital solutions. For us, it’s not about putting on a big show or getting lots of people in the hall. It’s about offering an effective industrial solution for digital printers. We’ve kept to our product roadmap statements in developing the new digital presses and nothing should change in that respect. The Primefire will undergo field tests this year and series production will start next year.

There was an interesting Q&A session during the Heideldruck press event on 19 February 2016. Video by Andreas Weber va iPad. — See as well our ValuePublishing real-time report via Storify.

Presumably, you won’t be revealing how much has been invested in developing the Primefire 106?

Stephan Plenz: We aren’t publicizing that. A good half of our R&D budget is currently going into digital applications. Don’t forget that we’ve developed a machine concept in record time that has everything the industry expects and demands of such a system, but then we did have the best possible starting point. We have a paper transfer system that is tried and tested in industry, our Prinect workflow, and Fujifilm – the strongest imaginable inkjet partner. Despite all these positives, it remains a challenge to create a press that ultimately meets customers’ needs.

Talking of Fujifilm, there’s clearly great chemistry between the two companies, isn’t there?

Stephan Plenz: Definitely, we’ve got excellent chemistry. We need to deal with the different cultures of a German and a Japanese company. There are always issues to be resolved and we approach these very openly with Fuji. Fujifilm and Heidelberg had a unique opportunity, because both companies needed to build a press to satisfy the industrial market and its needs. Each partner has some knowledge and expertise that the other doesn’t. Nonetheless, it’s a Herculean task to put everything together and produce a press that works. But we were starting from the ideal position. What’s more, there are good reasons why Fujifilm decided to work with Heidelberg even though it’s pressing ahead with its own JetPress development in a different format and could also have built a press in B1 format. In our case, though, we wanted to get the best of both worlds and have created a partnership of equals.

Will Fujifilm be marketing the press itself on the Asian markets?

Stephan Plenz: It’s too soon to make a definite statement about that. Both Fujifilm and Heidelberg are planning sales and marketing activities for the new system. What is certain is that we’ll be selling the Primefire on all markets on which Heidelberg is represented. We developed the press jointly, so Fujifilm will also be offering it to its own customers.

Something else I’d be interested to know in the “smart and cool” context is do you feel this new way of thinking at Heidelberg has been fully taken on board?

Stephan Plenz: Being smart has nothing to do with being cool. A company must have the ability to keep reinventing itself in a changed environment. Heidelberg was a completely different company in the 1980s and 1990s than in the new Millennium, certainly up till 2010. The changes we’ve initiated with strategies such as partnerships and the adjustments the changes in this industry have forced us to make – which admittedly weren’t always easy – have taken us another step forward. We’ve realigned and rebranded Heidelberg.

04_Stephan_Plenz

In your opinion, what are the most important aspects of this realignment?

Stephan Plenz: The things we’ve begun to change in recent years are now becoming apparent, starting with the logo, the rebranding, and the products. We’ve been in the process of building up a digital portfolio since 2010. That requires a clear strategy, stamina, and patience. It’s difficult to say whether that’s already been taken on board throughout the company. I believe we’ve made good use of the post-crisis period, geared our activities to the future, and regained the strength required to show the outside world what we’ve achieved. This isn’t the result of a process with four weeks of workshops and a new logo. It’s a reflection of something different, something new – and the result of the change we’re striving for with this company. It was a case of keeping the positive things about Heidelberg, leaving behind the less positive things, and setting about repositioning the company.

Do you have a target sales figure in mind for digital printing business at Heidelberg?

Stephan Plenz: We’ve said that in the medium term we’re looking to generate sales of over 200 million euros and we’ll definitely achieve that, maybe even a little more.

What are your expectations for drupa 2016 in terms of sales and visitor numbers?

Stephan Plenz: They’re very high for our new developments. The drupa trade show in Düsseldorf gives us the opportunity to present the company, the repositioning, and naturally new products, solutions, and innovations to our customers. To coincide with Düsseldorf, however, we’ll also be exhibiting our entire existing portfolio at our Wiesloch-Walldorf site. We’re delighted with the level of interest and expect to generate a significant number of orders. I think we can be very proud that we really do have something significant to show people.

So drupa 2016 has come at the right time, then?

Stephan Plenz: You could say that, yes, and such opportunities are vital. But in truth it’s not a case of whether 250,000 or 200,000 people pass through the drupa turnstiles. The important thing for us is that we attract the relevant customers. They have to be there and we’ll grasp the opportunity to get talking to them and answer their questions. We’re well prepared.

In contrast to previous drupa trade shows, partnerships will play a very big role at the Heidelberg stand, won’t they?

Stephan Plenz: That’s right. And our approach is also different and new. There are no longer individual companies in the hall simply exhibiting their own products. We have a coherent concept that we’re all presenting jointly.

Thank you for this interview.

Heideldruck Press event 2 18022016.001

By Andreas Weber | Click to access german text

Following its impressive relaunch in front of an audience of international experts in December 2015, long-established company Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG – or “Heideldruck”, as it is known by the stock market – has now reached the next level. In my view, print as a medium and as a universal media technology has now truly entered the digital age and is here to stay. The Heideldruck management team has done a superb job, and this will take the industry forward.

Using the platform of ValuePublishing, we have produced a comprehensive online real-time report giving information on the key aspects, and this has already attracted interest from over 100,000 specialists around the world via Value social media. See the summary in a Storify report, which provides texts, photos, short videos, and comments from experts. Key tags: #print #bigdata #IoT #multichannel #Innovation

The slogan “Simply Smart”, which – as reported – Heideldruck has chosen for the leading trade show drupa 2016, has a really promising ring to it. It encapsulates a new corporate strategy that was around two years in the making and turns everything in the print industry on its head. “There were many areas to work on,” concedes CEO Dr. Gerold Linzbach. He has now pulled it off with a new, highly dedicated team. Heideldruck seems to be rising like a phoenix from the ashes to set new standards. What’s it all about? It’s about how to enable the industrial production of print media in the digital age and harness its potential for business and private communication in new shapes and forms. Nothing more, nothing less. What’s revolutionary is that Heideldruck is no longer focusing on mechanical engineering and heavy metals but on innovative software architectures and valuable know-how on how to integrate print technology into profitable business scenarios. It’s now about digital expertise and no longer whether traditional offset printing or cutting-edge digital printing is better.

Almost as impressive as the many Heideldruck innovations announced in Heidelberg on February 18 and 19 was the response from the audience. Top experts from global print media technology publications were invited to take a critical look at a dazzling array of new products and solutions. The verdict was unanimous – “Hats off to Heidelberg. That’s exactly what will take our industry forward,” said Klaus-Peter Nicolay, publisher and editor-in-chief of Druckmarkt, and he was not alone. “Fantastic! Things at Heidelberg are right on track,” said Bernd Zipper, technology consultant and online printing expert from ZIPCON Consulting. And publisher Michael Seidl, EMGroup Vienna, noted: “This is a real game changer, not just the announcement of new developments that will help the industry and strengthen print for the future.”

Quick-read summary for Stority.

“Heidelberg committed to enhancing data”

“It’s all about data rather than tonnage. With one weighty exception, machinery is just a side note in the drupa offering from Heidelberg. The Group is absolutely serious about its slogan ‘We are more than machines’,” says Martin Schwarz from the magazine 4c. Ultimately, he argues, it’s a matter of building an ecosystem around the installed machine base that systematically leverages data and algorithms to boost print shop performance. And, he adds, “it may be that Heidelberg is creating the only possible impetus for disruption in an enormously saturated economic environment. Today a lot of what’s been presented may still be optional, but soon it will be vital. Yet it’ll also become vital to develop the brave new digitized service world into a source of revenue.”

Smart services are now one of the central planks at Heideldruck, as demonstrated so clearly by Harald Weimer from the Management Board. (NB: Weimer shows how printing can be managed using an iPad. See also our interview “Print is smart”). Services already generate sales of over €500 million a year at Heideldruck. As well as maintenance of machines and solutions incl. maximum system availability, increasing importance is now also being attached to knowledge transfer for optimizing management, production, and sales. Heideldruck provides a network that delivers valid data from over 10,000 installed machines, plus over 15,000 software products, so as to create benchmarks and drive forward ideas for improvements. This could be called a systematic form of collective intelligence. Heideldruck customers can use a secure online portal to access all this data, call up Heideldruck services including Remote Support, and order relevant consumables. With the new “Heidelberg Assistant” available at drupa, Heideldruck is entering a lucrative sector. The system is an extension to an e-shop, an app of sorts that gives print shop customers a precise overview of recommended maintenance, facilitates service queries, and enables online ordering of consumables at all times. It uses “intelligent algorithms” to recommend the correct material order volume and place orders instantly as and when needed. To date, the only similar service available has been in office publishing using managed print services (MPS).

A real sensation – Primefire 106

New technologies from Fujifilm and Heideldruck are setting new standards in inkjet printing, declared Member of the Heideldruck Management Board Stephan Plenz, who is in charge of inkjet technology development and was on top form for the presentation of Primefire 106. Production printing has been redefined. It’s no longer ‘either-or’, but a case of being ‘equipped for all situations.’

When asked about one of the secrets of the new machine – a newly designed digital impression cylinder – Plenz responded, whether knowingly or unknowingly, in a manner reminiscent of legendary Apple CEO Steve Jobs, with: “It’s magic!”. Both Plenz and the top-level management from Fujifilm, who had flown in from Japan, argued convincingly that this isn’t just another inkjet press being launched onto the market, but precisely the machine that meets industrial production needs, which hasn’t been the case to date.

Employing joint patents of Heideldruck and Fujifilm, it took just 15 months to develop, among other things, new inkjet print heads, with seven-color printing, and a conditioning system that enables printing of virtually any material without the ink having to penetrate the paper or card. Notably, thick materials can be used. This removes a major hurdle that has previously acted as a brake on inkjet printing – the limited number of paper types supported. Crucially, innovation is one thing – effective positioning of technological innovations on the market is another. Heideldruck is carefully selecting sectors to enter so as not to fall into the trap of following a one-size-fits-all approach. The new Primefire technology is aimed initially at specific segments in packaging printing and is due to be ready for delivery by the end of 2016. The first fully functional machine will be on show at drupa 2016, along with the classics from the Speedmaster series.

Heideldruck has published the key information and technical details on its innovations in charts and press releases. They’re well worth a read.

To sum up – ‘indeed, it’s magic.’ Never before has the run-up to drupa been so exciting. Reinventing print and adapting to business and consumer behavior in the digital age is exactly what we need. By rising like a phoenix from the ashes, Heideldruck is benefiting the whole of the industry – and naturally drupa, too, as the world’s leading trade show for print and paper, which will help target new groups of visitors, including those who no longer take print seriously, misjudge it or even consider it antiquated and outdated. — we now have convincing proof that the opposite is true. Print is winning in the digital age.

My very first comment on #Heideldruck Primefire 106, a new approach to industrial #Inkjet printing business.

Note: We’re following up this report with an interview with Stephan Plenz, Member of the Heideldruck Management Board. We’ll also be bringing together the best reports from colleagues around the world to show the wide range of views.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 19 February 2016

Welcome to another week of news highlights which has seen 39 news items and articles go online since last Monday, with five new additions to our FESPA Newsroom led by Durst, as it plans to unveil its new water-based printing systems and UV automation for LFP and dye-sublimation areas of application in Amsterdam next month; and then five in our drupa Newsroom led by Muller Martini with plans to show finishing for variable data printing live at the upcoming major event at the end of May and early June in Düsseldorf. We also have Konica Minolta, Ryobi and MHI, or RMGTas it is now known, planning to debut its newly designed range of presses, including hybrid digital; Global Graphics and Hybrid Software; and lastly CGS, as it announces the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ with results to be shown at drupa.

In Online Features the BPIF’s Printing Outlook for the First Quarter of 2016 introduction is highlighted; while Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday of last week looks at the successful recycling of paper cups by James Cropper Paper in the United Kingdom.

The week’s news began on a positive note on Monday from Manroland Web Systems, as managing director Jörn Gossécomments on the company’s positive 2015 financial year, which saw both an increase in profit and a boost in the company’s market share.

A major subject this week is that of labels and labelling, where on Friday the International label association FINAT previews 2016, as the industry is constantly challenged to provide much more for brand owners and consumers. The world of labelling is unquestionably one of the most dynamic and innovative industry sectors today. Thomas Hagmaier, current president of FINAT and CEO of Hagmaier Etiketten in southern Germany, offers an informed summary of the current status in 2016: Says Hagmaier, ‘Delivering a fine piece of label design and print that sells the product on the retail shelf is still essential, but today our industry is challenged to provide so much more, for the brand owner and the consumer. To meet an ever-growing raft of brand owner demands, the label supply chain has to meet challenges posed not only by industry innovation, but also by new packaging and labelling choices, online retailing, incredible refinements in imaging technologies, the need fo r sustainable solutions and, of course, international regulations.’ Don’t miss the article!

Also on Friday, you will also find Domino with UV textures for labels; Rotoflex with new security label inspection options; and then MPS, Screen with its Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press, Mathom and AVT, all preparing to join Rotocon at ProPack Africa in March in Johannesburg. Then we had Xaar on Monday, with an expanded product range for UV, which is ideal for printing UV spot varnish for labels, packaging and graphics applications.

As for new sales and installations as the new year gets under way, we had Stroma on Monday with its latest digital purchase from Heidelberg UK . Thursday saw BCQ with EFI Vutek; and on Friday, we had Positive ID Labelling Systems in the UK, which is growing its digital print service offering with the company’s second EFI Jetrion label press – this time a Jetrion 4900 model. Cape Town’s original fabric label printing company, Julius Solomon Specialist Labels, has added Xerox speciality silver and gold dry inks for packaging and swing tickets; and lastly,  Liverpool, UK-based Rayross has invested in Duplo to offer PUR perfect binding to its own customers, as well as  as trade service to commercial printers, design agencies and more.

Exciting new kit this week was led by Duplo on Monday, as it unveiled its new iSaddle PRO Digital System targeted at near-line high-end saddle stitching production. Canon on Tuesday with new entry-level MFP printers; and on Wednesday, Stora Enso as it introduces a new CKB Carrier board grade to be shown at the NEC Birmingham at the Packaging Innovations show on 24 – 25 February 2016.

There’s much more if you scroll down carefully, including as this week’s tailender, the new alliance for South Africa’s DigitalView and Mellow Colour among Wednesday’s headlines. Mellow Colour’s founder and director, Alan Dresch, is already known to many in South Africa from his earlier days with Linotype, as well as more recently with Mellow Colour. DigitalView is also in the drupa Newsroom with CGS, announcing the inaugural ‘ORIS Flex Pack Awards 2016’ which we mentioned earlier.

That’s about it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Heideldruck Press event 2 18022016.001

Great job! Very well done, Heideldruck-Management!

„Heidelberg will Daten veredeln“

„Daten statt Tonnen. Der Konzern nimmt seinen Slogan ‚We are more than machines‘ derzeit überaus ernst“, bewertet Martin Schwarz vom 4c Magazin seine Beobachtungen.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 22 January 2016

A Happy New Year to all our readers and followers, subscribers and sponsors. Despite the challenges, I sincerely hope 2016 will turn out to be a good one for all of us as we approach drupa in Düsseldorf at the end of May, preceded by FESPA Digital in Amsterdam in March.

Welcome to news highlights for the last few days or so in 2015, and then for the New Year, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs for the first three weeks of 2016. You will also find the very latest in our FESPA Newsroom for the upcoming FESPA Digital and its associated events in Amsterdam in March, as well as the very latest FESPA corporate news for the Southern European Print Congress in Italy in April. You may also take note that the deadline for this year’s FESPA Awards has now been extended until 15 February.

The latest also appears in our drupa Newsroom from visitors and the organisers, together with the most recent Expert Article No 6 by Ron Gilboa, director of InfoTrends’ Production & Industrial Printing Advisory Service. Please don’t miss them as drupa 2016 is just asround the corner.

I won’t highlight the news this week as there are a lot you can browse through yourself. Just don’t miss EFI and Xaar appointments, and also those from KBAIFS, and Heidelberg and Gallus in the UK. Gerold Linzbach is also back at work as CEO of Heidelberg. You’ll find some stunning sales and installations, including web presses from KBA and Manroland Web Systems, and several important pieces of new kit, too… especially from KAMA and Duplo, and Epson with a new range of wide-format inkjet presses.

Newsmaker of the year thus far and as my tailender, goes to UPM Kymmene for its various environmental awards and accolades. Our sincere congratulations to everyone involved.

I’ll be back next week around the same time.

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 6 December 2015

Welcome to another week of news highlights, feature articles, the very latest drupa 2016 and FESPA news and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 04 December, as Laurel invites you to spend December in Paris, suitably attired in her little black dress for the occasion.

From Messe Düsseldorf and drupa 2016 we have the second Global Insights Report Executive Summary, which is now available for you below, and also as a free download in up to seven languages from the drupa Website. You will find a fully-illustrated PDF of the Summary in our own drupa Newsroom version of the article. Independent consulting and market research companies Printfuture, UK, and Wissler & Partner, Switzerland, were appointed by Messe Düsseldorf to conduct the two-report series. This second part is entitled: ‘Touch the future – Applications that can create growth’. The full report is now available to purchase on the drupa 2016 Website and is based on a survey conducted in Spring 2015 in which over 750 participants took part globally, with all regions well represented.

The news this week contains some stunning announcements, not least of which from Heidelberg on Monday where Hofmann Druck in Nürnberg sets new standards with its latest long perfector: Europe’s first eight-colour Speedmaster 106 with LED. Tuesday comes from China, while on Wednesday, Manroland Web Systems has announced a successful turn in 2015 with sales, order intake and EBT noticeably increased. The company, now a member of the Lübeck-based Possehl Group, also announced the appointment of a second managing director. Thursday was led by Messe Düsseldorf for the Executive Summary already mentioned above. While on Friday, Heidelberg used its internationally-attended Packaging Days event in November, held at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site, to showcase new products from its partnership with Masterwork for the packaging sector.

HP Inc and KBA jointly provided the truly exciting news of the week late on Friday out of their joint two-day unveiling event held in Wurzburg on Thursday and Friday, where DS Smith Packaging revealed that it is to install the very first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S. Combining pre-print and digital printing in one machine, the gigantic inkjet web press with a web width of 2.80m was developed in under two years by HP and KBA-Digital & Web Solutions working in close co-operation. It opens up new opportunities in terms of the flexible production of corrugated packaging in various formats and run sizes with digital pre-print liners. You’ll find it in Online Features Chapter 08, and also with a link leading the news on Monday of next week.

Software releases came from Axaio and CHILI Publisher; a new cutter from Rotoflex on Tuesday; while new orders and installations were announced by Xeikon, MPS, and Rotocon. Epson announced a new concept world first office papermaking system on Thursday called PaperLab, which the company claims, promises to revolutionise office recycling by securely turning documents into new office paper. An interesting concept, perhaps?

To round off the week, both Agfa Graphics and Hubergroup have announced the 2016 Calendars, to remind us that the festive season is upon us once again and the New Year is really not all that far away. In fact, POLAR also reminded us of this on Thursday, as it details its training courses for 2016 to take place in Hofheim.

The tailender is devoted to Xerox, asCDP, an international environmental organisation names Xerox as a leader in providing reliable information about carbon emissions and energy use. This comes as COP21, the United Nations climate change conference in Paris gets underway. That’s the same event that Laurel talks about in her  Blog.

That’s it until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Smart Technologies need Smart Solutions need Smart Communications: Twitter- und Facebook-Posts machten die Heidedruck Pressekonferenz popullär. In Echtzeit!

Was sollte also getan werden?

  3. Werthaltigkeit ist Trumpf!

Neuer Focus: Smart Solutions, Synergetics, Collaboration

— Alles in allem: Keine leichte Kost!

„I like their [Heidelberg’s] application. If speed and PQ increase they can get into production lines. 4D is cool.

Leasing-Spezialisten. Siehe: ValueCheck! — How to Create the Real Value of Communication  via @ValueCommAG.

HINWEIS: Im Nachgang zur Pressekonferenz vom 1. und 2. Dezember 2015 ergaben sich beim Value Blog Dialog spannende Aspekte im Gespräch mit Heideldruck-Vorstand Harald Weimer. Siehe: „drupa ante portas: Print ist SMART!“

Value Blog Dialog Harald Weimer 12-2015.001

ABSOLUT LESENSWERT, was Bernd da schreibt und anmerkt!

01 Inkjet Day

Mai 2014 in Winterthur.

07 Inkjet Day
