Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 24 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 articles from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog, explaining the international standard for assessing the potential deinkability of print; and news from Messe Düsseldorf advising that the 4th Global Trends Report 2017 is now available to order, with a free Executive Summary you can download in a choice of seven languages. If you go to the news leader on Wednesday, or to our drupa Newsroom, you can read drupa director Sabine Geldermann’s introduction by following the link to the drupa Website where you can then register to download the Executive Summary for FREE. You can also purchase the full report from Messe Düsseldorf’s Online Shop in English or German for a nominal fee.

A key news highlight appeared on Wednesday, as KBA released its Annual Report for 2016, recording the highest profit margin in the company’s history, coupled with a healthy double-digit increase in revenue, market share gains in packaging and digital printing, a solid order intake with a high order backlog as the company prepares to celebrate its 200th Anniversary later this year. You can also find more about KBA-Flexotecnica’s successful start to 2017 in Friday’s headlines.

The lead article on Tuesday, by Gareth Ward, featured Canon, as it looks to establish its Oce Colorado UV Gel inkjet as a third way between solvent and latex in roll to roll print.

You’ll find a lot of pre-show and pre-event news again this week, beginning with Esko’s European Prepress Innovation Tour on Monday; then Xeikon Café which takes place this coming week, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday Sign & Digital UK announced its lineup ahead of its 30th Anniversary show which also takes place this coming week at the NEC, Birmingham; and then a FESPA 2017 mention, set to take place in Hamburg in May.

On Thursday, Heidelberg and Gallus took the lead as they announced their lineup for Interpack 2017 taking place from 4 – 10 May in Dusseldorf, and on Friday, we have FINAT with the annual European Label Forum, set to take place from 7 – 9 June in Berlin; and lastly another early mention for InPrint 2017, set to take place in Munich in November, and once again co-located with Productronica. ICE Europe, which took place this week in Munich had mentions on both Thursday and Friday; and lastly, Lopec 2017, which takes place in Munich this coming week, is among Friday’s headlines.

Friday’s news was led by Manroland Web Systems as managing director Alexander Wassermann provides a brief background and facts about the new and innovative web offset and gravure hybrid Varioman press for flexible packaging printing, which is due to commence production at an international packaging printer early next year.

Key sales and installations successes this week came from Heidelberg USA at Adams Lithographing, and Renz UK in Leeds on Monday; from Heidelberg UK at A3 Design & Print in Surrey with a digital Versafire CP; then Essex-based trade finisher Filmdie with a new Horizon perfect binder and three-side trimmer from IFS; followed by Contiweb/DG with a Thallo press for identity and security print at De La Rue in Malta; and lastly Edale with a 7-colour press in Devon – all on Tuesday.  On Thursday, Cape Town-based Creative Brands in South Africa announced that it has added a Xerox X1000 Digital Colour Press from Oxbow and Bytes to boost productivity. This was followed by Polar in Portugal with a fourth new cutter equipped for labels at Calipolense in Vila Viçosa.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with Ireland’s Cian Arthurs joining players from France, England, the United States and South Africa for this popular event – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time. You will find more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Architect’s sketch of the new demo centre for digital and flexographic presses at KBA’s headquarters in Würzburg. — Nine months before the official ceremony to mark the 200th anniversary of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) in September 2017, the foundations were laid in January at the company’s Würzburg parent plant.

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 17 March 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with another 30 from the past week, Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog on digital printing for packaging; the latest Wild Format Technology Guide from Paul Lindström; and three new Online Features from KBA featuring sheetfed in both medium and large-format, as well as enhanced waterless web offset at Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei in Düsseldorf. (We’re catching up after communications glitch with KBA).

Lots of pre-show news among this weeks headlines with Canon Europe with a brand new machine debut, as well as EFI and Zünd at FESPA 2017 on Monday; Ricoh Europe with wide- and large-format inkjet, and Sun Chemical on Wednesday; and Mimaki Europe and Neschen on Friday. FESPA takes place in Hamburg from 8 – 12 May. Other major event coverage appears for Xeikon Café on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, set to take place from 28 – 31 March in Lier, Belgium; while on Thursday, Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers led the headlines as they announced their plans to present unique possibilities for new packaging concepts at Interpack 2017, taking place from 4 to 10 May in Düsseldorf.

On Tuesday, Sun Chemical announced that it will exhibit at Metpack from 2 – 6 May in Essen just 36km down the road from Dusseldorf, at the same time as Interpack which doesn’t make much sense to me. On Wednesday we have Graphispag in Barcelona, from 21 – 24 March; and lastly on Thursday from the OE-A as it presents the most innovative ideas and outlooks in a competition for members from the organic and printed electronics sectors at LOPEC 2017 in Munich, taking place on 28 and 29 March.

On Tuesday you will find interesting lead comment from Gareth Ward on Kodak, as it slowly edges towards the sale of its Prosper inkjet operation; while on Thursday, Koenig & Bauer announced the official construction start for its new digital and flexographic demo centre in Würzburg to commemorate its 200th Anniversary, as part of euro 6 million site upgrade.

There are a number of nice recent sales and installations this week, beginning with Manroland Sheetfed on Monday at AIIM. Tuesday saw Revista in Brazil with Eversify; KBA large-format sheetfed at DS Smith in Erlensee; KBA again on Thursday as it moves a high-spec Compacta 518 web offset press from Belgium to St. Petersburg in Russia; and on Friday, Heidelberg UK at Woking printer Optichrome, which has installed two high speed Versafire CP digital presses to replace Xerox machines. This was followed by KBA in the UK as it installs a Rapida 106 6-colour with coater at Offset Printing and Packaging in Kent; and lastly, H Heenemann in Berlin with a Muller Martini Finishing 4.0 solution, the Vareo perfect binder, as the ideal solution to handle digital print in shorter runs as it gears for the future with fast-changing market requirements.

The news doesn’t end there as there are still a number of excellent articles I haven’t mentioned. You’ll find them all if you scroll down carefully… including new software; the BPIF with Apprentices; Flint with global price increases for inks and varnishes; then Canon Europe as it offers a first step into professional-level application versatility with more finishing options.

Lastly, news on Friday as one of our long-standing friends, James Matthews-Paul, is appointed as IPEX 2017 Content Curator. James has already signed the London College of Fashion for a printed fashion catwalk as an early sign of radical changes that could follow, from an extrovert but very clever, passionate and dedicated industry analyst and journalist who always thinks outside the box. James is also of a younger generation with refreshing perspectives, which IPEX definitely needs after its last showing in London.

Our tailender once again serves to remind you of the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open taking place in Cape Town in May, with South Africa’s Reinard Schuhknecht gearing up for his eleventh consecutive appearance in the popular competition – in Thursday’s headlines.

That’s it until next time.
My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News to Friday 24 February 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup with 35 of the best received during this past week, along with Laurel Brunner’s latest Verdigris Blog which looks at the relatively new European practice of laser marking of fruits and vegetables; plus a new Wild Format Technology Guide on The Basics of Colour Management for Wide Format Projects by Paul Lindström. We also have the very latest from Sabine Geldermann, drupa director at Messe Düsseldorf, in our drupa Newsroom, as well as leading the news headlines on Thursday, announcing the soon to be released 4th Global Trends Report 2017, with the Executive Summary in seven languages available in PDF format from the drupa Website.

”Last year’s drupa showcased a global print industry that has regained its confidence in the future, with lots of fresh technology and applications demonstrated to enthuse both printers and their customers alike. This report shows that whilst levels of confidence vary between regions and markets, overall the print industry is on the up and will invest strongly to secure a prosperous future.“ —Sabine Geldermann, director of drupa

Hunkeler Innovationdays took place in Lucerne, Switzerland last week, so obviously there are quite a number of articles related to the show, beginning with UPM, Canon with Océ, and Kodak on Monday; Océ again on Tuesday; Canon again with the Hackett campaign on Wednesday; and finally Muller Martini reviewing its participation at the show and leading the headlines on Friday – as it demonstrated the epitome of Finishing 4.0 in Lucerne, with visitors from across the world experiencing live the world premiere of connectivity between Hunkeler’s roll-to-stack line and Muller Martini’s Connex data and process management system, as part of a combined run of one line for softcover products, as with Muller Martini’s Vareo perfect binding line. Renz UK also in the news on Friday, as it claimed a ‘UK first’ order at the show from Ace Binding in Birmingham.

Other pre-show news on Tuesday focused on Xeikon Café which takes place in Lier, Belgium from 28 – 31 March, with announcements from Yupo, Meech and A B Graphic. On Thursday, pre-show announcements for Sign&Digital UK, taking place at the NEC on 28 and 29 March came from Blackman & White, Drytac with Antalis; and InkTec; but there’s more if you go through the headlines carefully, including Feldmuehle at Packaging Innovations on 1 and 2 March, and FINAT in June.

The main headline article on Tuesday came from Gareth Ward at the Print Business, announcing that Antalis is to float as Sequana (its parent) is hit by a High Court Ruling. The paper making and merchanting group is appealing a decision that it must pay BAT €138.4 million, and in the meantime has sought protective administration in France, with Antalis preparing to join the Paris Bourse.

Digital printing dominated this week’s recent sales and installations successes, beginning with Ricoh on Monday with more than 60 Ricoh Pro VC60000s in just two years. This was followed on Tuesday by FCS Laser Mail as it agreed a one million pound deal for a second Ricoh IP5000 GP. Also on Tuesday, TRESU with chillers for 12 HP Indigo 12000 digital presses in the United States. Wednesday saw Redfern Labels in Milnerton, Cape Town purchase a Xerox Versant 80 Press from Oxbow and Bytes. You will also find the Océ VarioPrint i300 sheetfed inkjet press now at more than 70 customers worldwide; while on Friday, we had Birtwell and Company in Lancashire, UK switching to Heidelberg digital with five-colour 6pp A4 format Versafire CV.

On Wednesday, Germany’s Mindener Tageblatt streamlined production of its mobile newspaper version with Eversify from Agfa Graphics; and Bonifatius in Paderborn, Germany, has opted for a Manroland Rotoman DirectDrive 16-page web offset press.  There are also a couple of very nice sheetfed orders this week for Heidelberg on Thursday at Falkland Press in the UK with a drupa generation XL 106, as it moves towards autonomous printing with digitised production workflows. Then on Friday, from KBA UK, as Printing and Packaging in Hinckley invests in a seven-colour Rapida 106 with double coater. Then we had Natalii, a Polish label specialist streamlining its workflow with Esko’s Equinox and Automation Engine; and lastly, Route 1 in the UK adding a new Polar guillotine.

The tailender this week goes to Canon (Friday), as the UK’s Martin Williams announces he will compete in the fourth Canon South African Disabled Golf Open in Cape Town in May.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find lots more below if you scroll down carefully.

Thursday saw Direct Printing Impressions in West Caldwell, NJ boost productivity by 40 per cent with its new Speedmaster CD 102-X. To round of the week on Friday, Stephens & George Print Group in Wales has returned to Heidelberg for two high-speed high-productivity Stahlfolders launched at drupa last year. CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer:  ‘Heidelberg goes digital. We are getting the company fit for the digital future.’ — Photos: Heideldruck

Graphic Repro On-line News Review to Friday 10 February 2017

Welcome to this week’s news roundup of another 25 of the best received over the past seven days, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Environmental Blog which this week is centred around Kodak’s Plate Green Leaf Awards for 2016, which also has a slot in Monday’s headlines with a list of winners – that includes South Africa. There’s also a new addition to the Wild Format Technology Guides section, with No 20 in the current series from Sophie-Matthews Paul.

It’s been a good week for news of a totally mixed bag which included both Sappi’s first quarter financial results on Wednesday; and Heidelberg’s third quarter report on Thursday, and tuckedaway in Heidelberg’s results is this elaboration of future plans from CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer, as Heidelberg realigns its organisation to accelerate the company’s digital transformation and thus ensure the correct business models are in place for the high-growth customer segments in the years ahead. In future, there will be a division that will develop, manufacture, and supply appropriate digital technologies and products for new business models. Another division will devise and market these models. Furthermore, th e global sales and service network will be more strongly focused on the digital challenges that customers face.

‘Heidelberg goes digital. We are getting the company fit for the digital future,’ adds Hundsdörfer. ‘To do that, we will develop and roll out our own innovative business ideas. However, we will also be strengthening our position in this area through acquisitions.’

Selection of Twitter screenshots to document excellent awareness: Thousands of impressions created via Value Publishing’s Social Media activities reporting in real-time on the #Heideldruck’s analyst meeting last Thursday.

Sappi also announced a range of current projects for both Europe and the United States, but in a separate article which leads the headlines on Friday, with comments from Sappi Europe CEO Berry Wiersum and Sappi Limited CEO Steve Binnie. All three articles shouldn’t be skipped if you want to keep yourself abreast of what’s going on in the industry.

If you check out this week’s headlines you will also find announcements related to the upcoming Hunkeler Innovationdays in Switzerland from Heidelberg; for Dscoop at Ipex in the UK; for Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations 2017 in Belgium; and European Sign Expo 2017 in Germany. There are some superb recent sales and installations this week, led by Xerox in Cape Town on Monday at The Print Place; Ricoh with its 2000th Ricoh Pro C7100 colour cut sheet press at Ligurgaf in Italy, and Polar at Truyol in Spain on Tuesday; Fujifilm at NWN in Wales and GSE at ACW in Germany on Wednesday; while Thursday saw Heidelberg’s first Primefire 106 B1 digital printing system at MPS in Obersulm in Germany begin its pilot phase, also marking the market launch of this new digital press powered by Fujifilm, which debuted at drupa last year. Remaining with MPS and also with Heidelberg, but in Kilbride, Scotland, which is to install the world’s first 18-unit XL 106 extra long packaging press next month for full commissioning by mid-year. Finally, an HP Indigo 5900 for firm 6 Colour Digital in St Helens, UK, completes this week’s lineup.
Please check out the rest carefully, as there are important announcements from Komori and Screen on workflow; from X-Rite and South Africa’s Digital View on service, and lots more.

The tailender this week goes to Canon South Africa for its 2017 South African Disabled Golf Open – to be held from 15 – 17 May in Cape Town – in the headlines on both Monday and Thursday.

That’s it until next time. Do have a good week ahead.
My best regards,
Mike Hilton

Offizielle Einweihung der Deutschland-Zentrale von Canon (von links): Rokus van Iperen, President & CEO Canon EMEA, Frank Meyer, Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Krefeld, und Rainer Führes, Geschäftsführer Canon Deutschland. Fotos: Canon

Kompliment. Großartig!—Andreas Weber, Head of Value

Zahlen, Daten, Fakten

  • 782 Brandschutzmelder wurden installiert
  • 1.637 Umzugseinheiten wurden abgewickelt
  • Rund 85.000 Arbeitsstunden
  • 12.000 m² Teppichfliesen
  • 35.000 Deckenplatten
  • 2.200 m³ Schutt und Abfall
  • 100 neue Parkplätze
  • 100.000 Pflastersteine für die neuen Parkflächen wurden verlegt
  • 2.000 neue Arbeitsplatz-Möbel (ohne Meetingzonen)
  • 500 alte Büromöbel für die Flüchtlingsarbeit in Krefeld

Highlight: Canon Customer Experience Center

“We live in an amazing Era of exponential growth. The technology for all of this exists already, it’s not fantasy. I cannot wait to make it part of my life and being able to contribute to it.” A statement given by Stefano Cutello to summarize what he experienced at “Mobile Photo Connect” in San Francisco end of October 2016. — That’s smart. Because Stefano already contributes a lot. — The conference attendees liked his approach: “Send your pictures on FB Messenger at PastBot, and you’ll get a beautiful PastBook photo book automagically created for you! Meet our PastBot: http://past.io/2ePYg8g

Great timing to be able to run a ValueDialog to get the full story of PastBook. And it’s a real success story!

By Şükran Ceren Salali and Andreas Weber, Head of Value

INTRO

INTERVIEW: Let’s hear the company’s success story from the founder and CEO of PastBook, Stefano Cutello!

Turning social media memories into high-quality, hassle-free photo books: How did you come up with the idea for PastBook?

Stefano: One day my father was showing me his photo album of him in his younger days and then I asked myself that “will I ever be able to provide that same emotional experience to my children?” The answer was of course “no”, because despite I have plenty of more photos than my father – all of them are scattered everywhere on different social media and devices. I was using Facebook, from the days it has launched, and I realized almost a big part of my life is there. That’s was the problem I wanted to solve for myself and it turned out to be a problem that many other people have. So PastBook was born with the mission “to help people to relive their memories”. At that time it was all still just an extra time project for fun; the first product we made was a huge poster that users were able to create in 1 click: you select a year and you get 12 columns with everything you posted that year; so, it was in the same way we create the book of one year that you can relive your Facebook and Instagram moments of a selected year, by that we provide you a unique place where you can easily rediscover them online and offline.

We asked a few friends to try it out and it all became viral in 24 hours, we received many e-mails from journalists and it ended up at, for instance, Wired and Corriere della Sera. That was the moment I felt that this was my next train, and I jumped on it.

How did you end up in Amsterdam?

Stefano: When I decided to jump on that train I had to make the tough decision to quit eBay.

Rationally, there was no reason to do that: I had my nice long term job, and high salary – and just a few months before I just moved to live together with my girlfriend to a new house.

Still – I didn’t want to live with the regret to do not have tried. So went all in with PastBook: worst case, I would have learned plenty of new things.

So I started to apply for any kind of accelerator and incubator around the world, I didn’t care that much where to go: I was not looking for the money, I was more looking for getting in an environment that would have supported me to build my company. My plan B was to move directly to US and find my way there.

In March 2012 I got into Rockstart Accelerator that was based in Amsterdam and within one month from my resignation – everything started.

What kind of challenges you faced during this process?

Stefano: Almost everything. (laughs). — Before my decision, all my friends were telling me “don’t do it”. But, I prefer to try and see than to regret not trying.

I had this big mission: I wanted to grow bigger and bigger but not much was concrete. Then I said, well, a powerful way that I can make my big vision happening is that I have to make it clear for my customer what the product is and what we expect from them. We shifted by making a super clear proposition; “making beautiful photo books less than 60 seconds”. That’s when we actually started selling and growing.

I think, in 10-15 years, people will ask “if something happens to me, what will happen to my memories on Facebook?, “Will I ever be able to allow my kids one day to go back to the memories of me online which even I don’t remember where I have all of them that right now?”. That’s why my goal now is to build up a big, solid and sustainable company that can be there and this is why we have this motto: “Relive Your Memories with PastBook”.

Even though I faced big challenges, my passion and hard work enabled me to handle it in the best way, and it works well right now. It’s still the same challenge, even though you grow, you still embrace the challenge. There is always bigger goals that inspires me to work more and more. One thing is to go from 1 to 10 customers, when you get there then you have to go from 10 to 1000, and then 100K and so on: you never stop and the challenges are always there at any stage – you just keep raising the bar.

What advice would you give to people looking to start a company?

Stefano: I don’t like to give advice but one thing is for sure; you can’t start a company if you are not passionate about what you do.

I would have had thousands of reasons to give up. It would have been easier if I’d stayed in eBay rather than working 14 hours a day. But I have a passion that drives me. We set this vision, worked hard and we think big now, but compared to where we want to go, we are still at the beginning. I’d say keep pushing, never give up. Always think big, but move a small step at the time – fast.

PastBook has a culturally diverse team. How important is this that your customer profile and workforce mirrors this diversity?

Stefano: The diversity we have now was not my intention in the beginning, that somehow happened during the way but I really liked it. I was working with an international team in eBay as well. It is nice because if you want to build an international company, it’s core to have different point of views and culture. That’s also why I keep asking people to talk in person rather than using our chatting system at the office, the personality of each of us should interact. I don’t really care where somebody is from, male or female, and younger or older. I just tried to get the best people that I can get. I want to make this company bigger and I cannot make it happen if everything has to depend on. I only have 24 hours a day and I cannot be the expert of every single area. So I need the best people around me for each of those areas to complement me. If you want to build a top class company, you need to have top class people who work for you.

What are the future plans for PastBook?

Stefano: Our long term vision is providing a place where all your memories are, and you can relive them in every way that you can think of, now is a photo book, but soon might be something else, even not printed.

About the interviewee

Can we learn who is Stefano Cutello?

Stefano: I’m a product guy and an engineer inside. I opened my first company – a web agency specialized in web site design and IT consultancy – when I was only 18, in Italy, but I started working in IT way before since my first years at high school. My education background is in computer science, but I dropped the university because I was learning way more in the real world working for big IT companies than studying theory – that I knew already – on books.

Almost all the companies I worked for were offering me to join them as an employee, but I was always refusing because I liked switching from project to project, making my own career and learning new things every time.

One of the companies in my client portfolio was eBay. After just a few months of consultancy, eBay also offered me the opportunity to become an employee and that was the only time I said yes: the team in eBay Italy was still small, international it was a kind of a dream job for me, and a new experience. So, I sold my previous company and started to work for eBay only. Moving from having your own company with a lot of different clients, working for 24/7 weekend and night to satisfy each customer – to becoming an employee, I ended up having a lot more free time than before.

As a techie, I like to spend my free time building things, just for fun. I had no intention of building a start-up. Problem is that when you have plenty of ideas and you are able to make them, you keep moving from one project to the other, ending nowhere. One day, with a colleague of mine who has a similar background, we said: let’s share our ideas and pick one to work on, promising each other that we’ll stick to it until we make it done. That idea was PastBook.

OUTRO

Stefano’s analysis of “Mobile Photo Connect” conference is worth to get added.

One of my favorite quotes by Robert Scoble: “Mind blowing shit is coming. It’s here”

Tonight [25 Oct. 2016] I had the luck to assist to the Tech in Motion fireside chat between Robert Scoble “Scobleizer” and Myriam Joire and I saw how the future is gonna look like. Sooner than you imagine.

  • Mixed reality experience that will make impossible to your mind to understand what’s real and what’s not – you’ll have to remove your glass to get back to earth.
  • Space sensors that will be able to feel the pressure of your hands on the floor from 50cm distance or that will be able to detect the heartbeat of the person you are looking at.
  • Eye sensors that will look at your eyes instead of looking at what you’re looking at to enhance the experience of what you are focusing on
  • Drones that are able to map a 3D model of a room in a matter of seconds and be smart enough to do any action in that room recognizing not just walls, but any objects in the room and be autonomous in handling them
  • Ecommerce experiences where the moment you “walk” to a shop, you’ll not find any shelf; you’ll just ask for a pair of Levi’s and a any possible model will appear in front of you already fitted by your size and preferences; or where you walk into a supermarket, you watch a tomato and you’ll see the supply chain of that tomato, letting you make a more wise choice on the most healthy one, also better understanding the difference in prices
  • Brands that will embed VR experiences in each of their product, so that the next time you’ll watch at your Nike you’ll see some special things coming out of your shoes
  • TVs that will mainly have the function of getting a 3D sensor in your home so that your living room can be mapped
  • Entertainment will be watching abut of your windows and see a “live” show happening in your garden
  • Driving will be sitting on the main seat in a Tesla (that you don’t necessary have to own) that will bring you wherever you want. Uber, Lyft, taxi and truck drivers will lose their job, but with the right regulations they’ll be able to have enough time to learn new things and get back to market: AI will destroy plenty of jobs but AI and VR will also create plenty of opportunities, unlocking learning experiences never possible before (think about Matrix)
  • You will not need a monitor anymore, you’ll have as many as you want, virtually
  • Market insights: It will be a war between Apple and Google, maybe Microsoft too. Facebook with its Oculus has to catch-up. Apple new upcoming Siri will make “virtual assistant” finally an everyday thing. The new iPhone will not be a phone anymore and most probably will be a glass that will interact with whatever you’ll point it to.
  • Memories will always be available for you to literally relive them like the first time and be part of them, interact with them, change them.

Last but not least: We live in an amazing Era of exponential growth. The technology for all of this exists already, it’s not fantasy. I cannot wait to make it part of my life and being able to contribute to it.
