The dream Team at FESPA2015

By Andreas Weber

It is always good to think and act outside the box! Isn’t it?

My spontaneous trip to Cologne to visit #FESPA2015 was amazing. Many good friends and business partners, a whole bunch of presentations, business talks and news were leading the way. It was the very first time this year to see, that the Print Community is still alive and has a good future. BUT: FESPA2015 stands for a sophisticated form of Print applications. Large Format, Sign and Display, Screen Printing are key element of everything which makes Print BIG!

Most surprising:

  • First of all, and sorry to say: The way, most of the exhibitors presented their stands was not so nice to look at. Old school booth design, always the same key messages like „better“, „faster“, „wider“ (bla bla)…
  • Much better: personal talks and some of the press conferences. Beside efi…
  • Really surprising: the presence of Zünd Systemtechnik AG, http://www.zund.com/, very high-tech, driven by the art of engineering and swiss made precision. And (my personal favorite): Durst Phototechnik AG, http://www.durst.it/en/, introducing Durst Water Technology in a very smart way: intelligent, emotional, interactive. They even organized and hosted a great evening event at Rheinterassen with a big surprise in a lovely atmosphere. Very well done!
  • Impressive as well how HP’s Graphic Solutions Business took the lead. Specially driven by its Latex technology.

Many others, like Canon, Screen, Epson, 3M and Agfa showed a strong approach to innovate this enhanced form of print communication.Good. Excellent. Extraordinary.

Three additional aspects:

  1. It was fascinating to see, how Output One, the first printed magazine of James ‘M-P’ Matthews-Paul, got presented. Good job. Very well done. (The copies were handed out personally, all of them digitally printed on HP Indigo 10000).
  2. All those avant-garde innovators at #FESPA2015 are in a good mood, highly motivated to transform the industry. But there is still a lot to do, according to our latest Value Report on „Print is dead? Long live print!“ — So we have to proceed.
  3. Last but not least: We had many good conversation on how to get the industries messages across in a more effective way. So the XMPie Users Group Initiative, the first european Multi-Channel Innovation conference was selected as a good opportunity to follow up the FESPA2015 trade show on May 26, 2015 in Berlin!

There were many other interesting aspects to talk about. Please check it out on your own via our ValueCommAG Storify report.

Sükran and Suri Value Analyse.001

By Andreas Weber, innovation expert and print analyst from the Gutenberg City of Mainz

Key issues:

  • The medium print does not have any problem today and in the future. Moreover, it is not in any crisis caused by others.
  • There is nearly no other sector that presents itself in the public eye so awkwardly and badly as the printing sector.
  • Print buyers highly appreciate good counseling and contemporary, proactive market communication specifically on the topic of how printed materials can be designed particularly effective, appealing and interactive. However, this type of service is in short supply.

The good old Johannes Gutenberg has tossed and turned in his grave for ages. While in 2000, the American business elite elected him “Man of the Millennium” and Silicon Valley called him the innovator of modern times (digital pope, Jeff Jarvis, dedicated the book “Gutenberg the Geek” to him), the printer guilt has denied and practically mothballed him.

Printing has nearly joined the rank of “non-words”. Despite the fact that worldwide hundreds of thousands of companies still make their money by producing printed materials. Many in the commercial printing business are looking to describe their work and what they offer new: whether it is media production respective marketing service provider or cross-media service provider, they increasingly try to avoid being associated with the term “print”.

Is this necessary? No! — Therefore, it is the goal to deal with the subject matter of “print” in any form other than it has been dealt with for the past 15 years.

  1. The (alleged) end of the Gutenberg galaxy marks the new beginning of “limitless print communication” — for hundreds of years, printed materials were the measure of all things, firmly in the hand of professional printers and publishers. Beginning in the 1980s, desktop publishing and the motto “Everyone his own Gutenberg” cracked their monopoly. Since, totally new players have taken the lead. Key points: a) Apple and Google developed the first e-print functions as new standards, so millions of new smartphone and tablet users can print their digital contents as needed. b) Specialists among others for Facebook and Wikipedia, who come from the development sector for intelligent search engines and algorithms, have created solutions to configure social media data by mouse click and print them automatically (first and foremost pediapress.com from Mainz). In addition, smart online photo print solutions are used by millions of any age groups!
  2. Reality contra misbelief: The thesis “Internet kills print” is false — this is what publishers and print professionals believe and they convey this message to their customers by having debated about the “print crisis”, of which Google supposed to be the culprit, for years.  The following are arguments against this belief: 1. Print publishers caused their crisis themselves and they did not even use innovations in print, and 2. “digital natives” are positive toward print if the contents and the communication offers are relevant, personal, and useful. (See the following reports: http://valuetrendradar.com/2014/09/09/valuecheck-the-internet-is-not-the-death-of-print/ und http://valuetrendradar.com/2014/10/03/valuecheck-newspaper-publishers-theyre-left-crying-in-the-corner/)
  3. Communication deficits paralyze the printing industry — the attitude “our products speak for themselves” has an effect as numb feet. Printing companies are ossified in their routines. Even the most innovative products and solutions, which many can offer, are marketed in accordance with the “Old School” principle: using sample maps and machine demonstrations for children and other interesting parties. There is nearly no printing firm that knows how to use professional online and social media communication such as targeting marketing campaigns as shown in an exemplary fashion in England moo.com or snapajack.com . (See YouTube video “How to innovative print business”). — In this context, not only the art of self-portrayal is what counts but also networking such as the example of Print Three from Canada shows.
  4. Innovation often takes place in print shops while the interfaces to the customers are mostly rather “retro”! — For more than 10 years, print shops have been under a significant cost pressure; however, they are primarily concerned with themselves to optimize their internal processes in order to produce efficiently. Only few of them focus on communicating the effectiveness of their print products, which they (can) produce for customers, offensively and attractively. Social media monitoring shows how much customers, who order printed matters online, have to criticize (they are unhappy about usability, multiple debits, a lack of color reliability, etc. see “printing research results: The Beauty and The Beast”).
  5. There is nearly no other sector that presents itself in the public eye so awkwardly and badly as the printing sector. This must change drastically! — For hundreds of years, print shops have not needed lobby efforts and industry communication. There were monopolists and there was no way around them. Moreover, they could sail on the lee side of machine suppliers. Just like IBM and computing, particularly the label “Technology by Heidelberg” guaranteed high customer confidence. This changed drastically no later than drupa 2012, which brought the breakthrough in digital printing. Many new players are no relevant. Nearly of them come from the imaging and IT sector. However, these companies are so large and different that individual print shops can hardly create any image transfer. This is not really terrible because with today’s media print shops can position themselves easily and effectively. Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus/YouTube and LinkedIn are the best aids, which provide the use of their infrastructure for free. It just requires a bit of training of how to handle it! — By the way, it is a bit embarrassing as well as inspiring that the world’s largest print buyer, IKEA, campaigns for print by imitating the Apple communication expertly. So far, more than 17 million people watched this video! Benchmark!

Conclusion — our take: “Something old needs something new!”

The printing sector should refocus on its old strength and the Gutenberg value system to be able to handle innovation in communication. This is the only way to survive structural change or structural break.  The medium print does not have any problem today and in the future. Moreover, it is not in any crisis caused by others. This is a homemade crisis. It is the outgrowth of business goals, user promises and communication that is no longer appropriate for customers and no longer up-to-date. No one has to do without the expertise, the passion, the flexibility of competent printing experts. Print buyers highly appreciate good counseling and contemporary, proactive market communication specifically on the topic of how printed materials can be designed particularly effective, appealing and interactive. However, this type of service is in short supply. This can easily be changed. Right? — Please check as well pour Value Guidelines for innovation marketing communications via Social Media.

Marktdaten.003

Quellen: drupa Insight Report; Canon Insight Report; SAPPI & YOU.

Muss das sein? Nein!

(Siehe die Reports: “The Internet is not the Death of Print” und “Newspaper Publishers: They’re left crying in the corner”).
The Beauty and The Beast“).
Benchmark!

Fazit — Our Take: „Etwas Altes wird etwas Neues!“

Mai 2015 in Berlin stattfindet.

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 30 June

Welcome to the news roundup for the last week of June, and also the last update until August as industry news tends to slow down dramatically during the holiday period in Europe and particularly during the month of July. Key news will still be posted on the Website when available, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs.

There are only two events that I am aware of in July. FESPA Africa, which kicks off at the Gallagher Convention Centre inJohannesburg this week, from 2 – 4 July; and then Expoprint Latin America in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 16 – 22 July. The next big one for Latin America will be FESPA Mexico in Mexico City from 21 – 23 August. This year’s key event for the newspaper and publishing industry will be WAN/IFRA’s World Publishing Expo which returns to the popular venue of Amsterdam from 13 – 15 October. Don’t miss today’s news from WAN/IFRA.
Key news to look for this week includes Antalis with educational podcasts offering advice on aspects of digital and sign & display markets; and also from Esko on Wednesday, relating to the rollout of its Knowledge Base Website, which provides access to valuable hardware and software information, resulting in customer self-service support having increased 75 per cent in less than half a year. Kodak’s announcement on Thursday of its entry into the corrugated market with its latest Flexcel NX developments, including new plates and a new platesetter to address this important market segment led the news.
And leading the headlines today you will find a joint announcement from the European Rotogravure Association; IDEAlliance; the Nordic Offset Printers Association; Print Process Champions Group; and WAN-IFRA, as they confirm global cross-industry collaboration for the production of the next industry ‘Best Practice Guide’ entitled ‘Optimized Paper Handling & Logistic s’.
As for recent sales and installations, the past week has seen several key announcements, led by EFI and GLS on Monday with the first EFI Jetrion LED inkjet narrow web press in the United States; followed by KBA at Chesapeake/MPS in the UK with a Rapida 106 as part of a £3m investment programme. Also Horizon with another StitchLiner from IFS in the UK.
On Tuesday, leading the headlines: KBA again with a third and fourth Rapida 106 now heading for Stora Enso Inpac in Guangdong, China; and from Kodak with Panther Graphics adopting a Kodak Achieve platesetter and Sonora XP Process Free Plates to boost its ROI, as well as its environmental credentials. This was followed by Karl Knauer in Germany, which is now focusing on higher performance with its new Speedmaster XL 106-6 with dual coater.
Wednesday saw CPI UK expand its short run digital book production with a third Quantum line driven by an HP T410 Digital Inkjet Web Press with a new Timson T-fold. The investment package also includes a new Kolbus KM200 binding line – all at its WiltshireUK facility. Also on this day, Weiss Druck in Monschau, Germany has invested in InlineCutoff Control Dynamic from Manroland Web Systems. On Thursday, KBA announced its 20th waterless Cortina newspaper web press installation complete with coating inTrier, Germany’s oldest city. This was followed by Edale with AB Graphic, as they announce a Digicon 3000 digital finishing system for Innovative Labeling Solutions in Ohio, USA. On Friday, Goss took the lead with UBP Printing in Malaysia which has opted for two more single-width Goss Community SSC presses with 36 new printing units, bringing UBP’s total to four presses with 84 press units in just four years. Also news from Heidelberg as Mexican packaging printer Grupo Reyes Hermanos in Mexico City invests in two Speedmasters XL 75-7+L with UV, one of which is Heidelberg’s 1000th XL 75 since its launch at drupa in 2008, a Suprasetter 75 CTP platesetter, and two Polar 115 cutters. DENA Print in Aberdeen, Scotland has also ordered a new Polar cutter. All in all I would say that was a pretty good week. This week’s tailender definitely has to go to Benny Landa, as Landa Corporation and speciality chemicals group Altana AG announced on Thursday, that they have concluded an equity financing agreement under which Altana will invest €100 million for a minority stake in Landa Digital Printing, as Altana sees Landa Nanography as a game changer for the print industry! That really is a serious amount of money. And there’s more below, if you scroll down carefully. Until next time (in August), my best regards,
Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 23 June
Welcome to another week which has seen several positive announcements and developments, both in the local market and elsewhere, along with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog and a couple of new additions in Online Features. If you haven’t yet downloaded the PDFs from HP with regard to its latest inkjet developments and direction, you should. I think they give a good indication of what to expect in the future in our own industry.Don’t forget that next week will see FESPA Africa kick off on 2 July at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, along with Africa Print, whereas Sign Africa and Visual Communications Africa are both incorporated into FESPA for this year’s event. You’ll find all the news in the FESPA Newsroom on the Website, and the most recent announcements also below.Monday was covered in last week’s update, but to remind you, it began with the announcement from Agfa and Thunderbolt Solutions. In order to return to a Monday – Friday week, I have repeated last Monday’s news below, as next Monday will see our last update until August. I need break during July for a change.

The best of this week’s new happenings and events that I am aware of can all be found below. There have been some really good ones over the past week, including major achievements from Kodak as the first Kodak Prosper 6000C commercial press beta installation is announced at Japs-Olson; from QuadTech with a first in Israel at CLP; from Agfa with 48-page CTP and workflow in Germany; and from Rotolito Lombarda with a Manroland Web Systems 48-page Lithoman with Kodak Stream Inkjet; a Manroland FoldLine for the company’s HP Inkjet Web Presses, and an HP Indigo 10000 B2 Digital Press for book covers – all on Tuesday.

Wednesday saw Sappi Ngodwana Mill’s Specialised Cellulose expansion officially opened in Mpumalanga; as well as a major new software release from Esko of its Suite 14; while on Thursday, Manroland Web Systems took the lead with a new 48-page Lithoman for Aller Tryk in Denmark. Friday began with FESPA Africa which has already been mentioned above, and with the major news coming from HP with the world’s first three installations of its new monochrome HP T260 inkjet web presses to meet demands of the China publishing market at three of Hucais’ printing centres.

Leading today’s headlines: Graphic Label Solutions breaks new ground in sustainability with the first EFI Jetrion LED inkjet narrow web press in the United States. This is followed by KBA at Chesapeake/MPS in the UK with a Rapida 106 B1 press as the ‘cornerstone’ of a £3m investment programme. You’ll also find Horizon with its latest from IFS at B3 printer Herts & Essex, also in the UK.

A double tailender for you this week to make up for missing out last Monday. UPM Kymmene with WWF Finland on Thursday with the promotion of sustainable wood-based biofuels, sustainable forest management and sourcing of raw materials in Finland; and again today, as it signs an agreement for the distribution of UPM BioVerno renewable diesel produced in UPM’s Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland.

There’s lots more lower down, including some exciting new software releases.

Until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 16 June

Welcome to an amazing week in the world of digital printing, both toner and injet based, plus of course, Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog and some new additions in Online Features, including new White Papers from HP relating to its disruptive technology releases this past week which you can download as PDFs. But before we begin with a review of the major items… today’s lead article announces a strategic agreement between Thunderbolt Solutions and Agfa Graphics South Africa, for the distribution, service and support of the entire Agfa Graphics range of products in Southern Africa – including plates and its complete range of inkjet printers.Last Monday Xerox took the lead with the opening of its latest Customer Innovation Centre in France with a clear message that inkjet will play a serious part in Xerox’ future in the industry. That was in last week’s update, but the links are still below if you missed it.

Tuesday began with Kodak’s announcement of two brand new Prosper 6000 Presses – literally new from the ground up – as it reveals its next-generation of inkjet printing. These are seriously big high-speed digital web machines for both mono and colour, and you not only need to read the article but also visit the Kodak Website to see the complete presentation, diagrams, configurations and detail, to see how serious the company is for the future of its high-speed Stream inkjet technology. A link is provided at the foot of the article.Heidelberg’s full acquisition of Gallus, also announced on Tuesday, highlights the aim to accelerate the use of Heidelberg’s digital products in the growing labels sector.

On Wednesday you will find Heidelberg’s results for its 2013/2014 Financial Year. But don’t be misled into thinking this is simply about figures. It is not. The article reveals much more about Heidelberg’s immediate, short-term and longer-term plans, including the move of 500 people from its central Heidelberg administrative site to the production site in Wiesloch/Walldorf – including the management board. Read it carefully and you will learn a lot. For the full financial figures you can simply go to the Heidelberg Website.

Thursday saw HP take the lead with the announcement of the upgrading of its flagship range of HP Indigo sheet- and roll-fed presses, including closed-loop colour control with in-line spectrophotometer and colour management tools help to ensure the best possible match to hard-copy proofs, colour uniformity within a page, and colour consistency between presses and sites to meet strict brand guidelines. The spectrophotometer also streamlines the process for colour standards certifications, such as GRACoL and FOGRA. Also on Thursday, major European book printer CPI has opted for the Manroland Web Systems FormerLine book block solution for digital inline finishing in conjunction with its HP Inkjet Web Press. The FormerLine will fold and cut at CPI’s Clausen & Bosse plant in Leck,Germany from the middle of 2014.

On Friday, Steinemann Technology, Schmid Rhyner and Druckhaus Mainfranken announced and presented the world’s first industrial large-format digital varnishing machine for sizes from A3+ to B1+ at 10,000 sheets/hour; but the even bigger surprise again came from HP as it announced PageWide inkjet technology for its Designjet printers which will completely disrupt the multi-billion dollar production printing market currently dominated by Canon and Xerox, and which mainly uses LED technology with a little bit of Memjet. There’s more on this in today’s news from Andreas Weber who was in Barcelona for the HP launch event on Thursday of last week.

There’s lots more lower down.

Until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 09 June
Welcome to another roundup of news for the past week, and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog. You will also find eight articles in our Online Features section this week, as well as a new download from Agfa Graphics; and in the FESPA Newsroom, four for FESPA Africa which takes place from 2 – 4 July at the Gallagher Convention Centre near Johannesburg, from Kemtek with HP Indigo, Durst, Aristo, EngView, Founders, Screen, Sibress and Duplo; and from Antalis South Africa with EFI Vutek, Esko and Kongsberg, Epson, and Kodak with the NexPress digital production colour press; and from FESPA Africa and the show organisers, plus a further six post-show articles out of FESPA Digital from Thieme, Mimaki Europe, Brett Martin, Canon and from the FESPA Digital team highlighting the most internationally diverse audience mix to date, at the oustandingly successful event held in Munich at the end of last month. The lead article on Friday came from Heidelberg, following the worldwide premiere of the new and faster large-format Speedmaster XL 145 and XL 162 presses for packaging printing, unveiled at its Info Days held in Wiesloch-Walldorf last week, along with Saphira Low Migration consumables that meet the special requirements for the production of food packaging. The latter can be found among today’s headlines. And leading the news today is Xerox, following the opening of its newest almost 8,500 sq/m Inkjet Innovation Centre and showrooms in France, to bring Impika’s aqueous inkjet technology, products and services to the forefront. The new centre is adjacent to the company’s expanded R&D and production facilities. This latest move, according to Andrew Copley, president Graphic Communications Operations, Xerox, ‘This represents a significant milestone in our inkjet strategy since acquiring Impika in 2013. Our plan to provide both aqueous and waterless inkjet technology is on track and gaining momentum. PSPs know we are serious about inkjet.’Among this week’s orders and installations you find the world’s first Inca Onset R40i UV flatbed printer, sold to ImageData at FESPA Digital; Henry Ling with its latest Canon/Oce inkjet investments; and American Greetings’ first Scodix S75 Digital Enhancement Press – all on Tuesday. On Wednesday we had Kodak with FlexCel NX at Flex-Punkt; Fujifilm’s prepress solutions with Screen PlateRite CTP at Howard Hunt; Marstan Press attaining Heidelberg ISO 12647-2 colour certification with its new XL 75 press; KBA with a Rapida 106 sheetfed offset press with HR-UV drying at Drukkerij Paesen; DST Output with a Horizon StitchLiner from IFS; and Signature Flexible Packaging with the latest gearless, sleeved, central impression 10-colour flexo printing press KBA Flexotecnica. On Thursday, Südostschweiz Presse increases added value with a PUR extension on its Muller Martini Pantera perfect binding line. Friday saw packaging and labels giant Autajon make its first move to digi tal inkjet with an order for Domino’s N610i digital colour inkjet label press most recently shown at Interpack; and The Print Unit with another Horizon StitchLiner from IFS.To begin this week on a really high note, Italian print firm Ruggeri Grafiche in Modena, is investing in a really highly-specified KBA Rapida 106 with eleven printing and finishing units; and C&D Printing has enhanced its digital printing services with a second NexPress digital press with Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions from Kodak. If you check out the headlines below, you will also find more new kit and software upgrades released and announced during the past week, including Alwan, Fujifilm and Masterwork. The tailender goes to the Esko flexo customers who nabbed four of six Best of Show awards at this year’s 2014 FTA Excellence in Flexography Awards. Congratulations to everyone responsible for these great achievements.Until next time, my best regards,

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 02 June
Welcome to another roundup of news for the past few days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs from Friday of last week and the week before, and a new article in Online Features from Druckteam Berlin and Heidelberg. You’ll also find 18 new articles in our FESPA Newsroom, bringing to the total for FESPA Digital to 73, and for FESPA News to 11, following what turned out to be a fantastic event in Munich, and a reminder of how proper trade shows really should be after the rather uninspiring and sharp contrast of Ipex in London a couple of months ago. On the very first evening of FESPA, Durst certainly set the tone and the standard with a magnificent event for the international trade press at BMW Welt near Munich. EFI followed the next day with an excellent networking press lunch for which it is becoming renowned at major exhibitions, where such events provide invaluable time-out and are appreciated. A sincere thank you to both Durst and EFI.FESPA this year not only looked and felt like a real trade show should (and used to do), as it had all the right exhibitors, new innovations, lots of new kit, new software and materials or substrates, visitors in both quality and numbers, the right buzz, the essential vibe, the enthusiasm, the networking, the sales and quality leads, and to top all of that, the sun came out to provide glorious weather for the duration of the event. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the tiresome trek on the U-Bahn to and from Messe Munich to the city, which like Munich’s airport, is an awful long way from the city centre. In fact, you can fly to Düsseldorf in the same time that it takes to get to the Hauptbahnhof on the train from either the Messe or the Airport, so next year’s event in Cologne (also Germany, which is a big plus-factor for those travelling from the rest of Europe and even further afield) should enable FESPA to again break this year’s all-time records, within an even more compact and visitor-friendly infrastructure from 18 – 22 May 2015, when the weather should also be ideal.Next stop, of course, is FESPA Africa 2014 at the Gallagher Convention and Exhibition Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, from 2 – 4 July, incorporating both the Sign Africa and Visual Communications Africa events.

As there aren’t that many news items for you to go through due to serious MacBook-related problems during my extended trip, I shall leave you to browse through them without prompts from me, apart from drawing attention to the new appointments announced on Wednesday from KBA, Kodak and EFI, and QuadTech’s new partnership with Muller Martini for its web presses. But there’s much more if you take your time when browsing through the headlines.including Screen’s appointment of Rotocon as Southern Africa reseller for the Truepress Jet digital label press. This follows Ipex Machinery’s appointment to handle both Screen wide-format and Screen high-speed digital inkjet web presses in the region. Kemtek retains Screen prepress and computer-to-plate.

The tailender this week goes to HP on Friday, as it expands production inkjet possibilities with a new HP Priming Solution, and the HP T260 660mm-wide Mono Inkjet Web Press for book production; and in today’s headlines you will find a complete Muller Martini SigmaLine with HP T300 Web Press and inline Acoro A5 perfect binder: a world premiere in this form at Rodona in Pamplona, Spain for soft cover book production.

Until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Update to Monday 19 May

Welcome to another roundup of news for the past few days, together with Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blogs from both Monday and Friday of last week, and a couple of new articles in Online Features from Saxoprint with Heidelberg, or more specifically Heidelberg Stahlfolder; and then Xeikon at Forlabels in Greece. You will also find 13 new articles in our FESPA Newsroom ahead of FESPA Digital which opens its doors tomorrow in Munich, until Thursday of this week. There will be lots of news out of the show for you in the days ahead I am sure.Last week saw Interpack in Düsseldorf, where the re-launch of drupa took place at a press conference held on Monday in the Congress Centre South at the fairgrounds, with presentations from both Messe Düsseldorf and the VDMA. You’ll find all the relevant articles in both English and German in our Drupa Newsroom, as well as in English only in our headline news today. You will find everything you could wish to know about the structural realignment and plans for the industry’s biggest event which is set take place just over two year’s from now, from 31 May until 10 June 2016. It is also the main reason for this update this morning, before I head off to FESPA in Munich later this afternoon. Interpack was enormous and appeared to be incred ibly well-attended. I devoted my brief time there to HP Scitex, HP Indigo, Scodix and Domino, and I must confess I came away very impressed with the latest new developments and enhancements from all of them. Domino’s pre-Interpack announcement appeared in the news last weekend and can be found below, whereas news of HP’s Interpack launches appeared on Thursday 8 May, and were in last week’s update.Other major news during the past week includes KBA’s first quarter results last weekend and then Sappi’s second quarter and half-year results which were announced last Monday. Both contain positive developments..

As there aren’t that many news items for you to go through, I shall leave you to browse through them for a change, without prompts from me. I’ll be back later next week.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news for the past few days, together with Laurel Brunner’s most recent Verdigris Blog, and the latest from Kodak with a downloadable sustainability white paper as a PDF, also authored by Laurel Brunner as managing director of Digital Dots, and entitled Process Efficiency for Improved Sustainability, specifically targeted at print companies looking to use technological innovation to implement significant environmental and financial efficiencies within their print offerings and capabilities. You’ll find the announcement and introduction to this in our headlines on Friday and also in Online Features Chapter 01. As to be expected, you will find numerous pre-FESPA Digital announcements again, as the show opens in just over a week from now.

This week’s news began with Heidelberg South Africa opening its Online Shop for its Saphira range of proven consumables, including plates, inks, blankets and much more. Heidelberg’s Online Shops in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America have enjoyed great success for quite some time, as they enable customers to shop in a secure environment 24/7.

On Tuesday, Kemtek and Fujifilm SA, together with Ferrostaal, announced a new agreement whereby Kemtek will become principal supplier of the Fujifilm Brillia lithographic plate range in South Africa from 1 October and will work together with Ferrostaal in the local market. Ferrostaal is currently the sole supplier of Fujifilm plates, whereas Kemtek currently sells the Agfa plate range. Ricoh also announced on Tuesday that it has launched Clickable Paper in the South African market – and what is that you may ask? See the article below.

Wednesday saw Heidelberg announce its preliminary results for the 2013/2014 financial year, which show a return to profit – albeit not that large, it does signal that the company is back in the black after five years of losses, major restructuring, reorganisation and implementation of very severe cost-cutting programmes. At least, as CEO Gerold Linzbach said, ‘…this lays the foundation for further positive developments at the company.’

On Thursday, as Interpack opened in Düsseldorf, HP took the lead as it announced the expansion of its Graphics Solutions portfolio with new HP Indigo and HP Scitex solutions to help converters open the door to the corrugated, flexible-packaging and folding-carton markets, and with the launch of the new HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press. There’s also Interpack news and product launches from Sappi Europe and Stora Enso. Among Friday’s headlines you will also find HP and the Comexi Group who will introduce the first dedicated end-to-end lamination solution for digitally printed flexible packaging on the HP Indigo 20000.

Friday’s lead was taken by Kodak as it announced its first quarter results which reflect a loss, albeit a reduced loss on a comparable basis in its first quarter, as transformation continues in the company’s technology businesses. It’s worth reading CEO Jeff Clarke’s comments and review of the current status, as well as the comment by Becky Roof, Kodak’s CFO. The results are apparently in line with expectations.

Don’t miss other important new developments this week from Creo with Konica Minolta; KAMA, Weilburger, and Stora Enso on Monday; and then from Sappi, DirectSmile, and Sun Chemical on Tuesday; and Agfa on Friday.

As usual, there are some rather nice sales and installations once again. On Monday from Nelspruit, as White River Printers adds a Xerox Color J75 with EFI Fiery FS100 Pro DFE; and then Muller Martini with two MC Sewing Machines with the Tween option for shorter signatures to M+S in Switzerland. On Tuesday, Heidelberg UK with a highly specified Speedmaster XL 75-5+L five-colour press with Inpress Control and coater as Hampton Printing adds B2 capability to its B1 lineup. Then Oriel Printing as it invests in Fujifilm’s Acuity 1600 LED inkjet printer to supplement its litho presses. On Wednesday we have Canon with Oce, Bobst and Technotrans. On Thursday, Screen with JCT and Screen Europe’s newest wide-format Truepress Jet W3200UV as its first flatbed inkjet printer. Orchard Press has returned to Heidelb ergUK to order a TH 82 buckle machine with a round continuous feeder; and lastly for this week: a KBA Rapida 106 with six inking units, coater and delivery extension at one of the largest packaging printers in Pakistan, Packages Limited in Lahore.

There’s so much more if you scroll down carefully. As a tailender for this week, and quite literally the last post on Friday: as FESPA invites the sub-Saharan African print community to ‘explore’ technologies and market opportunities at FESPA Africa which takes place in Johannesburg from 2 – 4 July. Not to be missed!

I think that’s about it again. I shall be in Germany next week, so there will not be an update. Until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton
