Celebrating 25 Years of Xerox DocuTech: The Icon that Spurred an Industry Movement

By Bill Michael

The secret we want to share: Great timing. Xerox‬ started DocuTech‬ exactly 1 day before the German Reunification was declared on Oct. 3rd, 1990. Read a brillant story, released by Xerox. [NOTE BY ANDREAS WEBER].

Lowe_Hicks, DocuTech Launch_v2Twenty-five years ago today, on Oct. 2, 1990, the company that changed the way offices work with the world’s first fully automatic, plain-paper photocopier unveiled an innovation that business insiders projected would prove to be equally as revolutionary for the print and publishing industry.

The prediction? Fully substantiated. The innovation? The Xerox DocuTech 135 Production Publisher, a device that single-handedly ushered in the print-on-demand era, while tearing down the walls that separated paper and electronic documents in the process.

For the first time ever, three distinct technologies – high-resolution scanning, laser imaging, and xerography – were combined into a single publishing solution, delivering offset-like quality at a lower cost and in an unprecedented turnaround time.

“Within a decade of its introduction, most of the black-and-white printing work in the United States had shifted to DocuTech, profoundly changing the nature of the printing industry and moving it into the digital age,” said then Chair of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Print Media, Frank J. Romano in 2003. On its landmark 25th anniversary, we look at the origins and significance of the original Xerox DocuTech, which won over legions of loyal followers who built hugely successful print businesses with its help.

A Foundation Far Ahead of its Time

Critical to this technological breakthrough were several innovations the company had invented decades prior but failed to capitalize on, instead watching as others successfully brought them to market. DocuTech 135 Launch Publicity Photo Inside View_v2
Among them were the personal computer, the user-friendly graphical software to run it, Ethernet and the computer control device known today as the mouse; all of which were created by Xerox’s world renowned Palo Alto Research Center (today known as PARC, a Xerox company). Indeed, the DocuTech’s mouse, GUI and internal Ethernet communications system were direct descendants of these PARC originals.

The several thousand engineers on the DocuTech development team also worked on state-of-the-art networked Xerox Alto and Star computers. These technologically advanced systems provided the engineers with a highly capable development environment in the 1980s, an efficiency that was unmatched at the time.

“While it’s true we produced the first personal computer but failed to market it successfully, those efforts did prove pivotal in equipping the DocuTech team with the tools and hardware to build a superior product,” said Randall Hube, manager of Litigation & Strategic Technical Services in Xerox Intellectual Property Operations, and also a member of the DocuTech development team from its earliest days.

Those innovations also included copying engines developed in Webster, New York, capable of printing at then-benchmark speeds as fast as 135 ppm, as well as advanced electronics from West Coast engineers that enabled the fast processing required for high-speed production of 600 dpi images – twice the standard resolution of the time. A team in Webster drew from this rich trove of cutting-edge technologies to develop the DocuTech’s groundbreaking architecture.

“One of the biggest challenges the team faced was how to make a machine that performed seamlessly in a space that was not yet defined,” recalls Hube. “We always had a sense, even from the beginning, that what we were doing was groundbreaking work and it was going to be very special.”

The Print-Shop-in-a-Box that Transformed the IndustryXerox-Unveils-New-Star

Upon its launch, the original DocuTech had an immediate impact on the printing market.

“This [technology] neatly fills a gap between convenience copying, offset printing and high-volume electronic printing,” said David Goodstein, printing industry analyst, at the time of its launch. The DocuTech was seen to be ideal for jobs that had to be produced “more quickly than they could be done in offset, where they need better quality than you could get on electronic printers, and the run lengths are long enough so that doing it on a walk-up photocopying device is too expensive.”

It was the first machine that enabled onboard creation of signature pages—a sheet with multiple images that when folded becomes a section of a book—the first that could run multiple functions concurrently, enabled creation of job tickets and much more.

The end result was what Hube called a “print shop in a box.” And for commercial print providers and in-plant printing operations, the opportunity to produce offset-quality copies 25 percent cheaper than offset printing presses – and in one-fifth the time – was unmistakable.

DocuTech_screen

Longer term, the DocuTech’s significance was its architecture, which formed the foundation for a series of models that would create an entirely new business of printing.

Essentially, the work process of printing documents was flipped on its head and fundamentally changed forever. Up until that point, it was universal practice to “print, then distribute”, a model made commonplace by traditional offset print. But by combining the steps of the printing process (prepress, printing, finishing) into new electronic workflows, older workflows and distribution models were traded in for digital printing’s new “distribute, then print” capabilities.

“In today’s high-tech environment, it’s hard to imagine a day when there was no viable means for a commercial printer to print directly from a computer to a high-speed production printer,” says Sam Hirji, President of Samco Printers, an early DocuTech adopter based in Vancouver, Canada. “The DocuTech forever changed that.”

DocuTech’s Impact Validated, Honored Among Elite Company

In 2003, thirteen-years after its launch, Xerox was recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with the prestigious IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition award for its development of the DocuTech, putting it alongside an exclusive group of leading companies and transformative technologies. Past recipients include: Intel for its development of the microprocessor, AT&T for its contributions in cellular mobile telecommunications, and Bellcore for its leadership in broadband fiber optic telecommunications systems, among many others.

The IEEE credited the DocuTech for creating, at the time of its award, the $30 billion print-on-demand (POD) industry and citing it as being “as revolutionary for the printing and publishing industry as the original Xerox copier was for the office.”

A Legacy that Lives On

While the DocuTech name was retired in favor of “Nuvera” beginning in 2005, and production of new units ceased in 2013, the mission that DocuTech set its sights on twenty-five years ago can be considered a success: To revolutionize the way documents were produced.

DocuTech 135 Launch Publicity Photo_v2

Today the legacy of DocuTech continues, both directly and indirectly, as more than 1,500 DocuTech systems are still active worldwide, while a countless number of businesses and individuals have benefited from the print-on-demand movement it created. “The Xerox DocuTech 135 has been a tremendous asset to Samco Printers over the last 25 years,” said Hirji. “Still to this day, it figures largely into our production cycle, reliably churning out black and white documents at the same speeds it did a quarter century ago.”

Whether you are a current or former DocuTech user, watched it from a distance, or once-upon-a-time worked on its development – we encourage you to share your stories, experiences and thoughts!

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 28 September 2015

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 25 September, which this week looks at the possibility of cows being used to produce bioplastics to replace polythene and be totally recyclable at the end of its new life. Not exactly cows working in factories, but at least by using a bi-product from one of their most important products while they are still very much alive and mooing, unlike leather goods and meat, Bovril and fertiliser additives which only happen during their afterlives. Just imagine how environmentally cool and friendly that could be!

With Labelexpo opening its doors in Brussels tomorrow until 2 October, and FachPack in Nuremberg until 1 October, and then with WAN-IFRA’s World Publishing Expo in Hamburg just a week from now, you’ll understandably find quite a number of pre-show announcements again this week: from Xeikon and ThermoFlexX; Agfa Graphics (multiples), Toray, X-Rite, Xaar with a brand new product launch, Esko, Epson, Chili Publish, ColorGate, and PrintCity Alliance along with a number of its members for both events. You’ll also find Viscom-related announcements from Fujifilm with a new generation LED UV inkjet printer, and Sawgrass. Upcoming events also include FESPA China which takes place next month, and FESPA Digital and European Sign Expo in Amsterdam in March 2016. These are also in the FESPA Newsroom along with several o thers.

Key announcements this week include the finalisation of AIP’s acquisition of Goss International and its subsidiaries from Shanghai Electric, leading the news on Wednesday. Sappi joining the Save Food initiative on Monday; as well as Ricoh SA at Gartner ITxpo 2015 from 28 to 30 September in Cape Town, where Ricoh will showcase the Total South Africa success story. On Thursday, Xaar took the lead for the global launch announcement of its new and versatile inkjet Print Bar system at Labelexpo 2015. On Friday, Epson announced four new wide-format inkjet printers, designed to deliver accurate, wide-gamut quality for professional photo, fine art and ‘brand-level’ proofing. One of these is to make its debut at Labelexpo.

Major sales and installations this week were led by Heidelberg USA and an XL 75 Anicolor in Cleveland; Epson with Ireland’s first SurePress L-4033AW seven-colour digital label press with white ink and variable data option; and Spanish printer Graficas Varias, as it expands its digital portfolio with new HP Indigo WS6800 – all on Monday. Tuesday saw Springfield Solutions in the UK invest in its second Screen Truepress Jet L-350UV digital inkjet label press in just a year, and a very nice endorsement for Screen. On Wednesday, Finishline Print Finishers in the UKannounced that it has added a fully automated Muller Martini Pantera perfect binding line with Granit three-knife-trimmer; while York-based Inc Dot has added the latest generation Linoprint CP from Heidelberg to replace a three-year-old, previous generation machine.

On Thursday, Multi Packaging Solutions in Bristol heralds first UK installation of Domino’s 7-Colour N610i UV inkjet label press; CPM International announced that it is to install an HP Indigo 20000 this month for combined production and quality benefits and to take digital labels to next level; while Kustom Digital Print in Woodstock unveiled the first Xerox Versant 80 digital colour press in Cape Town, South Africa.

Key announcements this week also came from Global Graphics on Tuesday, for the Inkjet Conference in Neuss on 7 October; Manroland Web Systems on Wednesday; and from Heidelberg USA on Thursday out of Graph Expo, and also on Friday as well.

The tailender goes to the BPIF in Friday’s headlines, as it calls for further input on new standards. In March the Federation announced an employer led submission to develop new standards, in what is hoped will become an apprenticeship trailblazer for future generations in print. Please take a look. Maybe you can also contribute.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find so much more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 21 September 2015

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 18 September, which this week highlights energy-saving LED drying technology for both conventional and digital printing, where is has many advantages, including low energy consumption and long life. You’ll also find Heidelberg in the headlines on Wednesday, and in Online Features Chapter 02, highlighting its most recent and prominent LED successes in Europe, and briefly detailing its range of UV applications from full UV, to LE UV, and LED, all of which are designed to drive productivity up and drive energy costs down.

Monday’s lead article was devoted to Westdale Press in the UK, as it exits web offset to focus on high-end sheetfed, describing web print pricing as ‘laughable’. Its M-600 web was replaced last month by its third Heidelberg long perfector, a Speedmaster XL 106-8-P with the faster Inpress Control 2 register and colour control system, Autoplate XL simultaneous plate changing and CutStar reel to sheet device. The rest of Monday is devoted to Graph Expo announcements from Kodak, EFI and Pitney Bowes, and also from Manroland Web Systems, announcing its participation at World Publishing Expo in Hamburg next month.

On Tuesday, HP at Graph Expo led with its newly renamed PageWide Web Presses employing HDNA (High Definition Nozzle Architecture), which now offers enhanced print quality with unparalleled dual-drop-weight architecture at 2,400 nozzles per inch and with built-in nozzle redundancy. A number of HP Indigo 7800 enhancements, including new software and an in-line spectrophotometer to streamline production, and much more, are detailed in the article. Also at Graph Expo, Kodak highlights its success with digital inkjet growth this year, with the Kodak Prosper Press platform and the S-Series Imprinting Systems, as well as a raft of recent developments in digital inkjet and digital printing.

The European launch of the new Komori Lithrone GX40 Packaging Press in the Komori Europe Graphic Centre at the beginning of this month appears among Tuesday’s headlines; while on Thursday, UPM’s FSC group certification scheme for private forest owners in Finland took the lead, as it announced it has passed the milestone of 100,000 hectares of certified forest.

Friday is devoted almost entirely to Labelexpo Europe announcements for the show which opens later this month, from the organisers and from key exhibitors led by Kodak; as well as news of Ricoh Europe at Euromold in Düsseldorf, which takes place from tomorrow 22, until Friday, 25 September. A reminder also that FachPack 2015 in Nuremberg takes place from 29 September to 1 October. See Sappi and TRESU’s announcement on Thursday.

There were some excellent recent sales and installations this week, beginning on Tuesday with Johannesburg’s House of Print with the first Xerox 1000i press in sub-Saharan Africa; then Toronto’s CJ Graphics as the first to purchase a Scodix Ultra Pro with Scodix Foil in North America at Graph Expo. On Wednesday, Goss International led the headlines, as Henry Wurst’s Kansas City facility is to install a sixteen-page, five-unit Goss Sunday 2000 to expand its commercial print business; then Heidelberg UK with the latest digital success at TPS with Linoprint; and from Muller Martini with the new MC 160 book sewing machine, which has been put through it s paces and has passed with flying colours at Conzella. On Thursday, Community Impact in Texas announced that it is launching a new in-house print facility with a Goss Magnum Compact web offset press; while ASQ Labels in Belgium is expanding into new markets with the wide colour gamut, high resolution Domino N610i UV digital inkjet label press.

A tailender to quench your thirst for knowledge this week, as Bud Light adopts HP Indigo digital print mass customisation technology to produce 200,000 unique, limited-edition Festival cans.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find much more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Seidl Weber Initiative Fachkommunikation 2015.001

Seidl Weber Initiative Fachkommunikation 2015.002

Pitney Bowes Inkjet System

Major step for Pitney Bowes: a new all-in-one mid-volume print and mail solution system

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 14 September 2015 by Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 11 September, which this week draws attention to ISO, which is currently reviewing an important document, the ISO Guide 64. For the printing industry, and indeed all product manufacturers, this snappy tome makes for interesting-ish reading. Its purpose is to explain how to take environmental concerns into account when creating product standards. Laurel also provides some words of warning, so please don’t miss it!

The news this week is once again a mixed bag with several articles related to Graph Expo, which opened yesterday, Sunday 13 and runs until Wednesday 16 September, at McCormick Place in Chicago. You’ll find some extremely interesting and important announcements led by EFI and Scodix on Wednesday, followed by Xerox and Highcon on Thursday. Friday saw Kodak with BDT; then Xeikon with Alwan, and again Xerox. I’m sure there will be several more during the week ahead.

Other upcoming show news appeared on Monday, for The Inkjet Conference in Neuss / Düsseldorf in October; and then from IFS for Print Efficiently taking place next month in Hemel Hempstead. From Sun Chemical at Glassprint in November in Düsseldorf; on Wednesday from Agfa as it prepares to launch the next generation of its chemistry-free violet plates at the World Publishing Expo 2015 in Hamburg, early next month. You’ll also find announcements from Asahi for Labelexpo at the end of September; and from Durst at Vitrum 2015 in Milan, from 6 – 9 October with its next generation glass printer.

On Tuesday, Sappi Europe led the headlines in announcing an extended portfolio of its specialist Algro base papers for thermal printing.  UPM took the lead on Thursday, as it has again been listed as the industry leader in the Dow Jones European and World Sustainability Indices. On Friday, Goss International took pole position as it announced twenty years of leading press automation technology with Autoplate, a key milestone in the development of web offset printing. Autoplate automatic plate-changing was first introduced on the M-600 press in 1995, offering the ability to plate up an entire web press in less than three minutes. Today, more than 2100 Goss Autoplate units are in operation on a range of commercial and newspaper presses worldwide.

There are several nice sales and installations for you again this week, from Xerox and Bytes at Asset Print in Cape Town, from Fujifilm, Domino with digital labels in the UK, Highcon with a first in France, and also from Heidelberg UK with another Speedmaster. You will also find the latest software release from Axaio, and a new low odour eco-solvent alternative inkjet ink series from Sun Chemical for Roland devices.

The tailender this week quite literally, as it is the last item in the news on Friday, goes to Manroland Sheetfed, which has invested 70,000 Euros in a new CNC machining centre for apprentices in Offenbach.

That’s it until next time. You’ll find a couple more if you scroll down carefully. And we will add the lastest news from GraphExpo on-the-fly!

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News from 31 August 2015 | By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 04 September, which this week travels to Japan, where the Japanese Federation of Printing Industries has become involved in paper recycling and developed a simple and effective system with comprehensive guidelines, a checklist and an online database of consumables, to which printers and print buyers can refer in order to work out what the ranking of the final product will be. It’s a simple and effective system that other countries should consider adopting.

News again this week was a little on the lean side to say the least, with only 19 articles for you to browse through. Upcoming Graph Expo in Chicago featured with announcements led by Heidelberg on Monday, and EFI and QuadTech on Tuesday and Thursday. We also had news from AMS and SPGPrints on Friday for Labelexpo in Brussels, and earlier in the week from Onyx at Viscom in Paris. On Wednesday, Duplo provided an update for London Calling Focus in November.

Leading Thursday’s headlines, drupa 2016 announced the start of its world tour at Igas in Japan on 12 September, followed by Graph Expo in Chicago on 14 September, as part of 40 planned global pre-drupa events embracing all five continents for next year’s show, which begins at the end of May and into June 2016. You can use the drupa banners on our Home Page at any time to take you to its Website.

Installations and sales successes this week include KBA with two Commander CL newspaper presses for Oppermann Druck in Germany; and Manroland Sheetfed with an eight-colour Roland 700 perfector and a seven-colour Roland 700 HiPrint for Kawashima in Japan. Then, KBA sheetfed with two long specially configured eight- and nine-colour Rapida UV presses for Beyer Graphics in New YorkState in the U.S.A. While in Cap e Town, South Africa, commercial printer Digital Express announced a twin buy of two Xerox Versant 2100s to expand its digital offerings. Finally, Kube in the UK is adding a five-colour Speedmaster XL 75-5+coater and Inpress Control 2 from Heidelberg.

A special mention this week for Ricoh Europe which announced a new Clickable Paper White Paper on Thursday, highlighting the importance of interactive print in direct marketing campaigns. You can download this via the link in the article.

The tailender this week goes to the fourteen new apprentices and trainees who began their working careers at Manroland Web Systems in Augsburg on 1 September, and leads the headlines on Friday.

That’s it until next time. There’s a bit more if you scroll down carefully.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Drinkable Book 2015

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 30 August 2015 by Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Friday 28 August, which examines the Drinkable Book which uses silver nanoparticles to create an antimicrobial paper that is an effective water purifier. The Drinkable Book sets an innovative precedent for water purification technology. And it’s a great example of how books can keep evolving for all sorts of unexpected uses. We also have a new article in Online Features Chapter 02 from Xaar, detailing how innovative Martens Brouwerij in Belgium is inkjetting directly onto PET beer bottles to deliver ‘on-the-fly’ customisation, using Agfa LED-cured inks and Xaar 1002 Inkjet Printheads.

With the European holiday season in full swing there are only 20 news articles for you to browse through this week, but they do include a number of quite stunning recent orders and installations starting with KBA on Monday and the most highly-specified and productive straight B1 press in the UK; several from Heidelberg UK including two highly-specified orders for Speedmaster XL 75s including one with a coater, and also for an XL 75 Anicolor with coater in the United States – the company’s second Anicolor press; IFS with Horizon; Scodix and SPGPrints. On Thursday, Heidelberg and Masterwork announced a successful start to their partnership in Europe with several notable successes.

You’ll find pre-show announcements for KBA at World Publishing Expo in Hamburg; for Labelexpo in Brussels from Goss International and GMG; for Watkiss at The Print Show at the NEC in Birmingham;  for KBA at Graph Expo in Chicago; and for Mimaki at both Viscom Paris and C!Print in Madrid.

On Thursday, Agfa led the headlines with its second quarter results with particularly encouraging news from Agfa Graphics, spurred by its inkjet successes during the first half of this year.

There are new software releases this week from Onyx Graphics and Enfocus. Recent new kit this week was highlighted by Ricoh, and on Friday, EFI announced its new scanning spectrophotometer to bring a high level of automation and integration to digital press colour management.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Labelexpo europe 2015

Graphic Repro On-line News from 24 August 2015

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog on Saturday 22 August, which this week examines the often tedious business of recyclability. There are also a couple of updates for FESPA Eurasia in our FESPA Newsroom, but no other feature articles this week, which has been rather slow to say the least, when it comes to news volume, or distinct lack of it, due to the European holiday season, to the point where it dried up completely on Friday.

I shall let you browse the news this week. You will find several mentions for Graph Expo in Chicago, one for FachPack in Nuremberg, several for Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, and one for IFRA India in Mumbai, all of which take place later next month, together with a selection of notable recent orders and installations, ending on Friday with Copy Express, one of the Cape’s fastest-growing full service print and copy shops, as it launches an ambitious Xerox-driven franchise expansion from its Bellville, Cape Town headquarters.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News | Review from 18 August 2015
By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 14 August, which this week examines the Maggi Noodles ‘contamination’ saga which began in Uttar Predesh, India. There’s also a new addition in Online Features Chapter 06, featuring PhotoBox, Europe’s leading personalised product company, as it optimises its canvas production division with an Esko Kongsberg digital cutting and finishing device, supported by Esko’s Automation Engine Workflow solutions; and in our drupa Newsroom, the third drupa expert article, this month from Sean Smyth, discussing inkjet printing.

Although the news was rather thin on the ground this past week with only 16 articles in total, it contains some very important announcements. Monday saw a new one-day event announced, set to take place in Manchester, UK on 3 December. The GlobalChannelPartners Summit 2015 describes itself as a new and unique networking opportunity for UK, European and Global players in the printing and packaging industries. We also have Epson at ITMA in Milan, Italy in November.

Tuesday and Wednesday saw the latest figures from both Koening & Bauer and Heidelberg, which always provide a true indication of how the industry has performed over the past three to six months, and perhaps more importantly, what can be expected for the remainder of the respective financial years from the world’s largest press manufacturers. You’ll find KBA’s half year results leading the news on Tuesday and Heidelberg with its first quarter results on Wednesday. If you combine these with last week Friday’s announcements (the links are still below) from Sappi, Kodak and Langley Holdings which includes Manroland Sheetfed, then they provide a much broader picture or guide, and there are some real positive signs.

On Thursday, Goss International took the lead with the first triple-wide Uniliner newspaper press in the United States, and reveals top results from the new technology at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as it invests heavily in the long-term viability of printed newspaper editions. Friday’s lead is also devoted to the future of newspapers, but this time with digitally printed editions for Guernsey and Jersey, as the Guiton Group, which owns the Jersey Evening Post, partners with Kodak to introduce Stream Inkjet technology to create a more flexible business model for the future of the newspaper industry in the Channel Islands. The company plans to produce eleven titles in total, including ten of the leading UK national newspapers which currently rely upon being flown to the islands each day for local distribution. Also on Friday, Manroland Web Systems announces intelligent ‘Imposer’: The first automated imposition solution for both digital and offset printing.

There’s a few more if you check them out carefully, including some nice installations successes from HP Indigo at Traffic Print Online Solutions in Germany, which has installed the 200th HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press. Then we have Heidelberg prepress, press and postpress at Keno Graphic Services; Heidelberg Stahlfolder at Grunwald, and KBA at Travel Bags Inc, all in North America.

The tailender goes to UPM as it opens an art exhibition by Chinese contemporary artist Wei Qingji on 14 August at Bioforum, UPM’s showroom at Biofore House Helsinki, as part of this year’s Helsinki Festival programme. The exhibition will remain open until 31 October.

That’s all until next time.

My best regards,

Mike Hilton

Graphic Repro On-line News Review from 3 August 2015

By Mike Hilton

Welcome to another roundup of news highlights and Laurel Brunner’s Verdigris Blog for Friday 31 July, which this week takes a look at the growing number of Standards and Environmental Labels for Printers and Publishers. You will also find two additions in Online Features from the BPIF offering a PDF download of its latest flyer; and also announcing publication of the latest issue of Printing Outlook for Q3 2015. It ought to be in our News columns but unfortunately those are limited to one illustration and I wanted to be able to include two of the Charts from the publication, which can be ordered online by both members and non-members who want to follow and perhaps use its findings and forecasts.

Important news leaders this week came from Heidelberg’s Annual General Meeting for the financial year 2014/2015 on Monday; followed by UPM-Kymmene on Tuesday with its Interim Results for Q2 2015; and also Global Graphics with its half-year Report. Wednesday saw Ricoh South Africa moving to new premises in Kwa-Zulu Natal designed to enable a technological showcase of its entire range of services in the Province; while Printing Industries of America releases more information about the ten key innovations and technologies selected to receive the 2015 InterTech Technology Awards, with Heidelberg, Esko and X-Rite also making separate announcements relating to their Awards on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday InPrint announced that its new visitor brochure for the upcoming show, set to take place from 10 – 12 November in Munich, is now available.

On Friday, Goss International announced another change of ownership, as American Industrial Partners prepares to acquire Goss and its subsidiaries from Shanghai Electric Corporation. The agreement is said to form part of a broader strategy to further strengthen Goss’ position as a leading global web offset printing press supplier, as SEC refocuses on its core business. This week also saw Sawgrass Industrial join forces with Kiian Digital and J-Teck3 on Monday.

KBA, Heidelberg, Esko Kongsberg, Manroland Web Systems and GMG all announced recent sales and installation successes on Thursday and Friday ranging from North America to Spain, to the UK and Thailand.

Our Tailender in a week which saw only 23 news items selected goes to Two Sides on Wednesday, which reported an 88% success in its latest Anti-greenwash initiative, demonstrating the effectiveness of challenging misleading ‘paper-free is better for the environment’ claims.

That’s it until next time, my best regards,

Mike Hilton
