From Gutenberg City Mainz to China — the Land of invention of paper and printing Art

The art of printing on an equal footing with the fine arts, especially painting!

First stations in Shanghai and Beijing

Since summer of 2014 Andreas Weber in a team with Dr. Ying Lin-Sill several meetings and events were held in the Gutenberg City of Mainz with high-ranking guests from China. The guests were delighted with Mainz as a center of the culture of communication. The spirit of Gutenberg as a “Man of the Millennium” is still felt today and impressed. Similar to a few years ago already visionaries of Silicon Valley were inspired, most notably Professor Jeff Jarvis (author of “Gutenberg – The Geek”), who visited Mainz in person.

Our honorable Guests from China suggested to conceive an exhibition on the culture of print communications. So among others, Prof. Yu Hiu, Deputy Director The National Palace Museum, Beijing. The exhibition is now coming to life and will be designed in Mainz and then shown in Beijing and Shanghai, with the project title “SURPRISE: The Art of Print”.

This especially against the background that, while some 2,500 years ago the paper got invented in China. And around 1,000 years ago, printing with stone slabs and wooden letters appeared the first time in China as well. However, since that print innovations take place outside China and are no longer used as such by the art scene in China.

The focus of the project are based on the results of the scientific work of Professor Wilhelm Weber (former Director of the Mainz State Museum/Landesmuseum Mainz), his publications (especially “Saxa Loquuntur” and “Aloys Senefelder”), including an exclusive collection of original graphics focusing lithographs (Stone printing). In addition the ValuePrint Lab by Andreas Weber delivers strong support to develop and showcase the innovation power of modern print and communications technologies. Specially for Art + Artist prototypically developed to date, outstanding new applications will be created and implemented with innovative partners that can then be exhibited in China. HP’s Graphic Solutions Business Group, the world wide leader of digital printing solutions on a premium level, will be our exclusive technology partner.

So be curious and stay tuned!

Roadmap:

The exhibition will start in China. Currently we are in touch with other renowned art institutions: Central Academy Museum, National Art Gallery, Qinghua University Academy and LAANG Art Center.

Beyond Graphic Arts: We showcase how Print becomes Art and vice versa. Our amazing Artists are real Innovators. We’ll start in China…

Our supporters will be our heroes. It is all about the beauty and innovation power of The Art of Print. Based in Mainz/Germany, the City of Johannes Gutenberg as the Man of the Millennium we have learned, that the real innovation in our life and culture is driven by those artists who are able to adopt new technologies to create and visualize the best content. We will have a mix out of the work of amazing German artists and a group of Chinese artists.

The funding is necessary to realize the exhibition concept, to present the exhibition pieces in a smart way, to frame them, to ship them to our unique exhibition locations in China, the home land of paper and print. And to publish about it via Social Media, videos and ebook applications.

Exclusively we will benefit from the famous art collection and world class knowledge of Prof. Wilhelm Weber, the author of art books like “Saxa Loquuntur” and “Aloys Senefelder”.

You find more detailed background information in our Blog.

Some of the artists we will present:
HAP Grieshaber, Christian Kruck, Hermann Rapp, Dietmar Gross, Guido Ludes, Rudolf Scharpf, Eberhard Schlotter. And a group of famous Chinese artist selected by Dr. Ying Lin-Sill, Mainz/Beijing.

Special thanks to Dr. Ying Lin-Sill for being our project partner and co-organizer.
